The Developing Imperfect Leaders podcast is intended to develop imperfect people into better leaders. None of us are perfect, fully-realized people, which is why leadership development exists in the first place! Since we are NOT Jesus, we all have room for growth in our lives and we need help along the way. Therefore, each episode is designed to help anyone to become a better leader by examining a provocative question on a relevant leadership topic, looking at quotes from beneficial resources, and thinking through the practical application for growing in our imperfect leadership. If you are a perfect person who has life, relationships, and leadership all figured out, then this podcast is NOT for you. But, if you are someone who loves learning, growing, and improving. then this is something you'll enjoy and benefit from.

Quote of the Week:
Today’s quote comes from C.S. Lewis in the book, “Prince Caspian.” For context, Aslan is the Jesus figure in this story and Lucy is the character speaking with him.

“Aslan" said Lucy "you're bigger".
"That is because you are older, little one" answered he.
"Not because you are?"
"I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger.”

In this episode we share our testimonies and some gospel basics. We explore the new realities that happen when we become a Christian, including the things we gain, lose, and change.

Quote of the Week:
Today’s quote comes from Book VIII of Augustine’s Confessions. He writes of his conversion,

“So was I speaking and weeping in the most bitter contrition of my heart, when, lo! I heard from a neighboring house a voice, as of a boy or girl, I know not, chanting and oft repeating, 'Take up and read; take up and read.' … I opened, and in silence read that section on which my eyes first fell: 'Not in rioting and drunkenness… but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in its lusts.' … No further would I read; nor needed I: for instantly … all the darkness of doubt vanished away.”

In this episode, the team considers what it means to lead others while navigating ongoing mental health problems.

Quote of the Week:
Today’s quote comes from an article by Joe Carter on the Gospel Coalition website titled, “How Church Leaders Can Be A Non-anxious Presence.” He writes,

“Being a nonanxious presence requires displaying a calm and gentle demeanor, especially in the face of crisis or conflict. This calmness isn’t about being disengaged or indifferent but rather being composed, thoughtful, and gentle with others, which provides a stabilizing influence. A nonanxious leader must manage his emotional reactivity. Emotional reactivity occurs when an external event triggers intense emotions disproportionate to the cause.

If we’re nonanxious, we won’t succumb to such emotional reactivity because we don’t get swept up in the anxieties, fears, or emotional dramas of the groups or individuals we’re leading. We avoid knee-jerk reactions to situations and instead respond thoughtfully and deliberately, which can help de-escalate tense situations and encourage others to think and respond calmly.”

Today’s quote comes from C.S. Lewis in The Problem of Pain and it reads,

“Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”

In this episode, the team solves all your issues with your parents! NOT! The team discusses the unique ways that our parents can get under our skin, and what it looks like to not turn back into a teenager when we are with them. They consider the importance of emotional intelligence, healthy conflict, and following Jesus as we relate to our parents.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment intended to help imperfect leaders to grow.

Quote of the Week:
Matthew 7:1-5 in the New Testament
“Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye.”

In this episode, the team discusses the goal of teaching including some wrong answers. Did you know that teaching isn’t about being impressive or knowing everything? The team tackles that reality and considers some helpful things to give away ideas to the people you are trying to teach whether they are toddlers or adults that you are leading.

Quote of the Week:
The quote comes from an interview with Chris Anderson of Ted Talks, titled: TED’s secret to great public speaking. (We can apply this to teaching as well.) In the interview he says: “Your number one task as a speaker is to transfer into your listener’s minds an extraordinary gift – a strange and beautiful object that we call an idea…[an idea is] a pattern of information that helps you understand and navigate the world.”

In this episode, the team discusses the sometimes polarizing Enneagram personality test! They discuss using the Enneagram as a tool and not condemning it or treating it as the same authority of Jesus. The team considers how using the Enneagram as a tool can help us to have language for sin and see our need for Jesus. They also identify Paul’s Enneagram number and see the ways it can be helpful in our lives.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment intended to help imperfect leaders to grow.

Quote of the Week:
The quote comes from an article from Christianity Today by John Starke titled: An Evangelical’s Guide to the Enneagram. He writes, “The strength of the Enneagram is that it exposes where we might need healing and what vices might be causing division with others and even within ourselves. As Christians, we use the Enneagram as a tool to find healing not by becoming our true selves but by finding ourselves more truly in Christ. And we become more virtuous not by authenticity but by imitation.”

In this episode, the team discusses the idea of currency - knowing why people serve and work - and what impact or value they expect it to have. They consider the importance of knowing and caring for the people you lead, as well as understanding their values and gifts. The episode focuses on volunteering, managing, and being an employee.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment intended to help imperfect leaders to grow.

Quote of the Week:
This week’s quote comes from a book titled, The Volunteer Project. In the book, they write, “Researchers refer to the use of one's own skills and abilities to make a difference as participation efficacy. Volunteers have a belief that participation in your program will bring about a meaningful result. It is important that as leaders we understand that nearly every volunteer arrives with an unstated psychological contract expecting their participation to result in a positive and meaningful outcome for others.”

In this episode, the team discusses the reality that every single person on the planet desires meaning and purpose for their lives. They discuss the healthy and unhealthy ways to seek meaning and how we tend to look for security and significance in life. They also consider the challenges of seeking meaning in a self-obsessed culture.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment intended to help imperfect leaders to grow.

Quote of the Week:
Today’s quote comes from an article about a study conducted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education where they studied the mental health challenges of teenagers and young adults.

The study mentioned how young adults have a lack of “meaning or purpose,” an emotional void – nearly three in five young adults (58 percent) reported that they personally felt in the previous month. Half of the young people surveyed also reported feeling a “lack of direction” in their lives.

“Purpose involves an act of commitment to something in the world. And it’s something in the world that isn’t all about me, it’s not all about the self,” Damon said. “When you have that purposeful orientation, it prevents you from being self-absorbed and always worrying about yourself, being anxious and looking inward and saying, ‘Am I all right?’”

Quote of the Week:

In this episode, the team welcomes LDI Intern, Matt LaFrambois to the microphone to discuss rest. The LDI Crew discusses how they rest and considers how adding God into our rest is the way to find the restoration we actually need.

Quote of the Week:
“You don’t need to unburden or collect yourself and then come to Jesus. Your very burden is what qualifies you to come. No payment is required; he says, “I will give you rest.” His rest is gift, not transaction. Whether you are actively working hard to crowbar your life into smoothness (“labor”) or passively finding yourself weighed down by something outside your control (“heavy laden”), Jesus Christ’s desire that you find rest, that you come in out of the storm, outstrips even your own.” — Dane C. Ortlund, Gentle and Lowly: The Heart of Christ for Sinners and Sufferers

In this episode, the team welcomes LDI Intern, Sami Schwink to the microphone for a discussion on comparison. Why do we feel almost compelled to compare ourselves to others? The LDI Crew considers how to turn comparison from a curse to a celebration of God’s creative design.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“The problem with comparing our lives to others can be traced to our hearts that produce the comparison. When we desire the life someone else has, we are saying in our heart that the gifts God has given us just aren’t enough. Our discontentment, jealousy, and bitterness points a finger at God and tells him that he has gotten the story of our life wrong, and we can write it better.”

We might say things that demonstrate that we are really down on ourselves, that we don’t matter, or that we suck. Remember, shame says, “I’m bad” at an internal, personal, value level. We can know that we are listening to and internalizing a shame narrative when we find ourselves unwilling to take care of our own needs or assert our desires in a relationship. We can know that we are listening to and internalizing a shame narrative when we are in constant comparison to others, or in consistent need of approval from others. We can know that we are listening to and internalizing a shame narrative when we are not taking care of ourselves (physically, mentally, spiritually, emotionally), because we are unwilling.”

Quote of the Week:
“The character of God is the basis for our connection to him, not our intrinsic worth. Self-worth, or anything we think would make us acceptable to God, would suit our pride but it has the disturbing side-effect of making the cross of Jesus Christ less valuable. If we have worth in ourselves, there is no reason to connect to the infinite worth of Jesus and receive what he has done for us. So if you feel unworthy of God’s love, you can turn in one of two directions. You can turn inward, in which case you are looking for a little self-worth to bring to the Lord, and that is pride. Or you can turn to him and discover that he has a heart for the unworthy.” -Shame, Interrupted, Ed Welch

In this episode, the team leans into theology and discusses spiritual gifts, how we can know our gifts, and how to begin to use them for the common good.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
Various Quotes and ideas generated from Wanye Grudem’s Systematic Theology:
A spiritual gift is “any ability that is empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in any ministry of the church.”

“Gifts are related to both natural abilities and miraculous things empowered by ‘one and the same Spirit’ for the common good. (As seen in 1 Corinthians 12:7)”

The purpose of spiritual gifts are “to equip the church to carry out its ministry until Christ returns”

Three things about Spiritual Gifts:

Each and every follower of Christ has some gifts.

There isn’t one gift we all have.

No one has every gift.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

In this episode, the team discusses when it’s time to ask for help. In a culture geared toward independence, competency, and perfection, how do we even begin to ask for help?

Quote of the Week:
“Our problem is our delusions of strength that keep us from seeking the grace that strengthens us in our weakness. We just don’t like to be weak. We don’t like to think of ourselves that way, and we don’t want others to see us that way. So we act as if we know things that we don’t know, and we don’t ask the questions we need to ask. We act as if we can handle things that we can’t handle, and we don’t seek the help that’s available. We act as if we’ve conquered things that we have not conquered, and we don’t reach out for help for the battle. It is all a failed quest for the self-congratulatory glory of independence.”

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

In this episode, the team discusses the wise intake of information and advice from social media. Amidst carefully curated, influencer heavy social media content, what are we supposed to take away?

Quote of the Week:
“What we spend our time looking at greatly affects what we’re thinking about. Everyone knows what it’s like to have negative thoughts while online. One woman might be anxious and worried after reading a friend’s update on her sick family member. A different woman may feel lonely after seeing a group photo of a social gathering posted online. Another woman might doubt the validity of God’s Word on a particular subject because a popular influencer has a new view and everyone seems to agree.

“What we see on social media affects how we think. It also affects how we view others. It’s important for each of us to consider—in what ways am I negatively affected by social media? Who invites me toward folly? So often, our thoughts lead us to temptation. Spending time on social media can tempt us toward discontentment, unkind judgments, bitterness, or envy of someone’s possessions or accomplishments.

“As you think about your own areas of temptation, consider how social media influences your struggle. Discernment is not avoidance of the world; it’s the ability to go into the world and embrace the good while avoiding the bad.” —Melissa Kruger, What Social Media Users Need, The Gospel Coalition

In this episode, the team discusses wise counsel and who we should listen to in real life. The LDI Crew also considers characteristics of people who may be considered wise counsel.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“True wisdom and knowledge cannot be found apart from Christ. Colossians 2:3 tells us that in Christ is hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. Christ is wisdom made flesh. ‘And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption’ (1 Cor. 1:30).

“In addition, giving advice, no matter how helpful, apart from the truth of Christ can often encourage a recovering Pharisee to add your suggestion to an already long list of things to do to make life work apart from the grace of Christ. Our idol-producing hearts are quick to take any helpful advice and put all our hope in it. We are quick to make a solution into a savior.” - Christina Fox, The Problem with Good Advice, The Gospel Coalition, https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/problem-with-good-advice/

Welcome back for Season 2! In this episode, the team discusses why we should move toward humility and self-forgetfulness in culture driven by self-satisfaction and the pursuit of individual happiness.

Each episode features a leading question, quote of the week, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Gospel-humility is not needing to think about myself. Not needing to connect things with myself. It is an end to thoughts such as, ‘I’m in this room with these people, does that make me look good? Do I want to be here?’ True gospel-humility means I stop connecting every experience, every conversation, with myself. In fact, I stop thinking about myself. The freedom of self-forgetfulness. The blessed rest that only self-forgetfulness brings. True gospel-humility means an ego that is not puffed up but filled up. This is totally unique. Are we talking about high self-esteem? No. So is it low self-esteem? Certainly not. It is not about self-esteem.” - The Freedom of Self Forgetfulness, Timothy J. Keller

In this episode, the team discusses how embracing the gospel allows us to accept responsibility for our mistakes and offer genuine apologies to those we’ve hurt. The LDI Crew also discussed what makes a good apology.

Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“If apologizing were a way of life, no walls would be built. Relationships would be authentic. Certainly people would fail, but the failures would be dealt with in an open and honest manner. Regrets would be expressed; responsibility would be accepted. Restitution would be made. Genuine repentance would be our intention, and we would stand humbly and say, “I need somebody to forgive me.” When apology becomes a way of life, relationships will remain healthy. People will find the acceptance, support, and encouragement they need.” — The Five Languages of Apology, Gary Chapman & Jennifer Thomas

5 Apology Languages
Expressing Regret
Accepting Responsibility
Genuinely Repenting
Making Restitution

Quote of the Week:

In this week’s episode, the team discusses personality tests such as Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, and Strengthsfinder. Our cultural views of personality tests exist on a spectrum ranging from a path to “self-actualization” to things to be feared because they are “unbiblical” in nature. The LDI crew examines helpful uses for these assessments when grounded with gospel truth.

Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Søren Kierkegaard says that the normal human ego is built on something besides God. It searches for something that will give it a sense of worth, a sense of specialness and a sense of purpose and builds itself on that. And, of course, as we are often reminded, if you try to put anything in the middle of the place that was originally made for God, it is going to be too small." — The Freedom of Self-Forgetfulness, Timothy Keller

In this week’s episode the LDI team dives into questions surrounding the topic of failure. How do we even begin to define failure? Why are most of us so obsessed (knowingly or unknowingly) with failure? How are our desires for comfort and ease tied to our fear of failure and decision making? How do we overcome our often paralyzing fear of failure and begin to follow God with confidence in our decision making?

Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“We’ve assumed that we’ll experience heaven on earth, and then we get disappointed when earth seems so unheavenly. We have little longing left for our reward in the next life because we’ve come to expect such rewarding experiences in this life. And when every experience and situation must be rewarding and put us on the road to complete fulfillment, then suddenly the decisions about where we live, what house we buy, what dorm we’re in, and whether we go with tile or laminate take on weighty significance.” —Just Do Something, Kevin DeYoung

In this episode, the team discusses decision making. Comfort and ease can be major drivers in our decision making, but the LDI crew offers other factors to consider. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“If God opens the door for you to do something you know is good or necessary, be thankful for the opportunity. But other than that, don’t assume that the relative ease or difficulty of a new situation is God’s way of telling you to do one thing or the other. Remember, God’s will for your life is sanctification, and God tends to use discomfort and trials more than comfort and ease to make us holy.” —Just Do Something, Kevin DeYoung

In this episode, the team discusses relationships and why they are worth having. While truly toxic relationships do exist, we now live in a culture quick to label difficult, challenging, or inconvenient relationships as “toxic.” Quick dismissal of others can impede our growth as leaders and work in opposition to how God desires for us to be sanctified. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Relationships will push you beyond the limits of your ability to love, serve, and forgive. They will push you beyond you. At times they will beat at the borders of your faith. At times they will exhaust you. In certain situations, your relationships will leave you disappointed and discouraged. They will require what you do not seem to have, but that is exactly as God intended it. That is precisely why he placed these demanding relationships in the middle of the process of sanctification, where God progressively molds us into the likeness of Jesus.” —Relationships, Timothy S. Lane and Paul David Tripp

In this episode, the LDI crew discusses creating boundaries in relationships as an alternative to cancel culture. Boundaries, the healthy fence lines we create between ourselves and others, can allow room for forgiveness, dialogue and humanization of people with whom we disagree. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Forgiveness and opening up to more abuse are not the same thing. Forgiveness has to do with the past. Reconciliation and boundaries have to do with the future. Limits guard my property until someone has repented and can be trusted to visit again. And if they sin, I will forgive again, seventy times seven. But I want to be around people who honestly fail me, not dishonestly deny that they have hurt me and have no intent to do better.” — Boundaries: Henry Cloud

In this episode, the team discusses how an unhealthy relationship with perfection impacts the ability to navigate the tension between having high standards and accepting that everyone needs an opportunity to learn and grow, and thus requires compassion. Development necessitates that leaders offer compassion and maintain realistic standards as others show vulnerability in the midst of trying new things. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Empathy is a choice, and it’s a vulnerable choice, because in order to connect with you, I have to connect with something in myself that knows that feeling.” —Empathy vs. Sympathy, Brené Brown

In this episode, the team discusses hopefulness rooted in Jesus and how that hope works in us amidst anxiety. When we lead with an anxious posture, we tend to focus on our lack of control, uncertainty, or fear. As hopeful leaders, we look to the future, striving to see it through the lens of the gospel. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Instilling hope may seem like an obvious requirement for leading other people. Hope gives followers something to look forward to, and it helps them see a way through chaos and complexity. Knowing that things can and will be better in the future is a powerful motivator. When hope is absent, people lose confidence, disengage, and often feel helpless.” —Strength Based Leadership, Tom Rath & Gallup

In this episode, the LDI Crew discusses the almost inevitable, anxious feeling of being a “fraud” in leadership. One key element in successful leadership is stability. The team offers helpful questions to think through to assess stability as a leader. Areas for consideration include: change, communication, connection, consistency, and managing the unexpected. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“As a leader, your followers need to know that your core values are stable. This will buffer them from unnecessary change and ensure they know what is expected. Our need for stability plays into nearly every decision we make.” —Strength Based Leadership, Tom Rath & Gallup

In their debut episode, the team discusses the topic of trust by addressing reliability, authenticity, truthfulness, communication, reliance on Jesus, and more. Each episode features a quote of the week, big takeaways, and a Growing Together segment geared at imperfect leaders who are seeking development in their leadership potential.

Quote of the Week:
“Trust is fundamental to our sense of safety, autonomy and dignity as human beings. It is also an integral part of every relationship we have. When we trust someone, we feel safe to share what is important to us including our thoughts, ideas, efforts, hopes, and concerns. When others trust us, they reciprocate in kind. It doesn’t mean we always agree, just that we listen to, respect and value what each other has to offer. In fact, trust allows us to disagree, debate, and test each other’s thinking as we work together to find the best ideas and solutions.” — The Thin Book of Trust, Charles Feltman
