Episode Notes

This week on Dizi Friends, Eda and Maha do something a little different:

We create our own dizi.

From casting and tropes to storyline, timelines, and even marketing, we imagine what our perfect Turkish series would look like.

Set between Ankara and Istanbul, Second Chances follows a group of university friends whose lives reconnect years later; bringing old dynamics, new relationships, and unfinished stories back to the surface.

Expect: familiar tropes with a twist, multiple love stories (yes, we went there), past vs present timelines and a surprisingly detailed take on how a show like this should actually be marketed.

This episode is part storytelling, part industry commentary and a little bit of manifesting.

Tune in and tell us: would you watch Second Chances?

Episode Notes

This week on Dizi Friends, Maha and Eda explore a question we don’t often stop to ask:

What actually makes a great leading man?

Using Ozan Akbaba as a starting point, we unpack the qualities that make certain actors feel… different on screen.

From charisma and presence to emotional control and casting choices, we look at what makes a performance truly compelling—and why some leading men stay with us long after the episode ends.

We also touch on how leading men in Turkish TV have evolved over time, and why audience expectations might be shifting.

Is it about power? Vulnerability? Or something harder to define?

*The movie we mention as a trivia at the ending is "Selvi Boylum Al Yazmalım" starring Türkan Şoray and Kadir İnanır.

Thank you for listening! See you in the next episode and let us know if you would like to listen to an episode about iconic Turkish movies.

Episode Notes

This week on Dizi Friends, Maha and Eda explore a noticeable shift in Turkish television: Why do so many new series revolve around crime, violence, and mafia-style narratives?

We discuss several recent projects, including:

Aynı Yağmur Altında – A show that sparked debate due to a controversial early scene and its reliance on shock-driven storytelling.

Sevdiğim Sensin – A series with emotional potential about a young woman rebuilding her life in Istanbul, yet framed within darker narrative elements.

A.B.İ. – An age-gap romance entering an already crowded dramatic landscape.

Yeraltı – Another love story built around a mafia-centered world.

Rüya Gibi – A promising show featuring a refreshingly different protagonist (a hairdresser), which concluded at episode 13 as darker themes took over.

We also briefly mention Eşref Rüya ** and discuss broader concerns about how excessive violence might influence younger viewers.

This episode is not about criticizing individual creators. It’s about recognizing a pattern.

We ask:

Why has “crime” in Turkish TV become almost synonymous with “mafia”?

Is shock value replacing layered storytelling?

Are audiences growing tired of violence-heavy narratives?

And what does this trend say about the current state of the industry?

Crime stories can be powerful. But does every story need a mafia backdrop?

Join the conversation and tell us: Are you experiencing mafia fatigue too?

Episode Notes

Two friends, many dizis, and an accidental Christmas special. 🎄✨

This week Eda and Maha start with what they’ve been watching, then wander happily into colors, words, creativity, and cozy holiday traditions.

What we watched this week

Eda:

Halef
 Uzak Şehir
Go Türkiye series: An Istanbul Story
 Kıskanmak

Maha:

Uzak Şehir
Go Türkiye series: An Istanbul Story
 Veliaht
 Güller ve Günahlar

We talk about what’s working (and not working) in these shows, how our expectations are changing as viewers, and why some dizis keep pulling us back even when they drive us crazy.

From there, we go full “seasonal special” with some current cultural obsessions:

Pantone picking Cloud Dancer (white) as Color of the Year

Dictionary.com choosing “6–7” as Word of the Yea

Maha’s experience at a“Bedazzling” book event and how using our hands (crafts, making things, handwriting) can quietly feed our creativity

Eda's thoughts on Christmas as a non-Christmas person – not celebrating it religiously as Muslims, but still loving the lights, decorations, and the shared joy of the season

Maha's thoughts on Christmas as someone who celebrates it and what makes it so special

And of course, we had to end with comfort Christmas movies:

Eda’s picks:

-The Holiday
 -The Holdovers
 -The Chronicles of Narnia
 -The Muppet Christmas Carol
 -How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Maha’s picks:

-While You Were Sleeping
 -Home Alone
 -Miracle on 34th Street
 -Mickey’s Christmas Carol

-The Chronicles of Narnia

Cozy chats, light dizi spoilers, and lots of inspiration for what to watch next. 🎧

Episode Notes

We’re back for Season 5! In this episode, Eda and Maha catch up on the chaos of returning Turkish dizis and the wave of shiny new projects. We talk about why Uzak Şehir is quietly setting the benchmark for what a good dizi can be, why Eşref Rüya and Bahar are breaking our hearts for all the wrong reasons, and how Kızılcık Şerbeti has managed to lose both its premise and most of its cast.

Then we dive into the new kids on the block: Güller ve Günahlar (we like it… but the ethics are messy), Veliaht (with Maha’s takes), Halef (which Eda absolutely despises), Sahtekarlar (we’re weirdly curious), Kıskanmak (full of potential with some sharp criticism), Aşk ve Gözyaşı (why we think it’s on its way out), plus quick thoughts on Çarpıntı, Ben Leman, Sakıncalı, and Taşacak Bu Deniz.

If you love Turkish dizis, character drama, and a bit of ranting with love, this one’s for you. As always thank you for listening and make sure you follow us on social media to keep up with our new episodes.

Episode Notes

This week, Maha and Eda dive into a pressing question:
"Have Turkish TV series lost their magic, or is it an industry problem?"

Following the cancellation of Çift Kişilik Oda, the girls felt compelled to unpack why romantic comedies—a genre once loved both in Turkey and abroad—are now struggling to survive. Once guaranteed hits, romcoms have faced a sharp decline in ratings and nearly all new titles since 2022 have been canceled early.

Could the rise of streaming platforms be part of the issue? Are TV channels falling behind? Or is the genre simply out of touch with what audiences want?

🎧 Tune in for a thoughtful (and passionate!) conversation on the fate of Turkish romcoms, the changing dynamics of the dizi industry, and what it all means for creators and viewers alike.

Disclamer: Unfortunately because we record on Zoom and are in different locations we have some internet delay issues. We are working on a solution for this and we hope to have it resolved starting from our next episode. Thank you for your patience.

Hi friends, in this week's episode our lovely guests is Daphne MacLeod, an author who reached out to us online and that's how we became friends. She was so inspired by dizis that she even wrote a book called Queen Bee and the Turk. We discuss many things in this episode mentioned below as they may be difficult to catch through us chatting. :)

Goodreads link to Daphne's book: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/210485598-queen-bee-and-the-turk

Dapne's IG address : https://www.instagram.com/daphnemacleodauthor/

*The first dizis Daphne watched were: The Protector (Hakan Muhafız) and Çarpışma (Intersection) and she also counted As the Crow Flies (Kuş Uçuşu) as one of the series she would rewatch. Kiralık Aşk is also mentioned.

*Daphne's favorite actress is Naz Göktan. She feels like Can Yaman is overrated.

*Eda mentions Asmalı Konak - a dizi from the early 2000s, if you haven't seen it, here's a link to its IMDB page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365980/

*When we are discussing how women are portrayed in dizis, Daphne mentions Mezarlık (Graveyard) on Netflix. Go check it out, the second season is out!

Thank you for listening and we'll see you on our next episode!

Episode Notes

This week, Maha and Eda have a guest on the podcast; we get to speak with the person behind Derin Universe.
Derin is a Turkish blogger who lives abroad and studied business in France and is starting her Masters in Creative Industry which includes TV and Films in London. She mostly writes in English so you can follow her writing easily. Interestingly, Eda discovered her blog through an article where she wrote about dizis and why there were not enough female producers.

Join us for this interesting chat and we hope you will learn fun things along the way! Also interesting that this also includes the podcast's first Turkish guest. It's a rare and valuable insight to have two Turkish women from different generations talking about dizis. Things discussed in this episode center around women and the dizi industry, some things discussed may be triggering for our listeners who are sensitive around topics such as violence against women so please keep that in mind.

Check out Derin's article that is mentioned on the podcast:

Episode Notes

In this episode Eda and Maha are doing some dizi therapy and are sharing some things that are bothering them about the dizis they are watching. We know for many people who watch dizis it's a way to let off steam but lately dizis have been causing Eda and Maha some stress too so if you are interested in why join us for an engaging conversation between two dizi friends.

Some things we discuss during the episode:

-Why we are not happy with love stories now
-Writers being over-confident and ruining storylines
-Why weekly dizis could learn from daily dramas
-Karadut and the problem with instant love
-Kızıl Goncalar - problem with Cüneyd and Mira
-Bahar - concept of second season losing plot
-Gizli Bahçe - the return of harquelin romance
-Bir Gece Masalı - too many villains
-Siyah Kalp - same instant love problem
-Yabani- instant love with main leads and slow burn with supporting characters
-Finance - ratings system in dizis- problem with online platform shows (Netflix, Amazon) not knowing if it will be renewed
-Machine of storytelling- you have to build up to perfection
-Difference between dizis of 90s and 2000s and the dizis of now

Episode Notes

Maha and Eda welcome you to the podcast after a long pause with a different subject than usual. With the lack of summer dizis this year they have been enjoying some reading time and this episode is all about their latest favorite genre: fantasy romance or "romantasy".

Join them for a fun adventure as they talk about the history, favorite sub-genres and also psychological and sociological reasons why it's been so popular these past few years. Some of the things mentioned throughout the episode:

"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley

"Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer

"Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon

"A Court of Thorns and Roses" series by Sarah J. Maas

Grimm Diaries by Cameron Jace

"Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine

"Circe" by Madeline Miller

EDA's recs:

"A Study in Drowning" by Ava Reid

"The Bird and the Sword" by Amy Harmon

The book Eda mentions towards the end where we say, spicy scenes must feel earned is "One True Love" by Linda Kage. Not half as good as the two books she recommended above but you might want to give it a chance. It's about forbidden romance and does have spicy scenes so please beware if you are underage. (We talk about it at 44.40)

-MAHA's recs:

"Ember of Ashes Quartet" by Sabaa Tahir

"Glass of Throne" series" by Sarah J Mass

"Caraval" by Stephanie Garber

"The Iron Butterfly" series by Chandra Haan

Also mentioned:

The Fourth Wing and it's sequel The Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

Episode Notes

On the second episode of our second season of Dizi Friends we discuss one of this year's best projects, Bahar. We initially discuss why we think Bahar is an important project and why we like it. Later we do a mini analysis of Bahar's relationships and why the focus of self realization is a refreshing theme. This episode also includes a new segment we want to implement where we discuss some important news from Diziland. We hope you enjoy it and we are also looking forward to hearing from you.

Things mentioned:

Demet Evgar's sitcom is called 1 Kadın 1 Erkek and you can find it on Netflix (unfortunately not in the United States).

The poem mentioned that was from the 2nd episode of Bahar is called Denge (Balance) and you can see its translation to English here:

BALANCE

Your red is truly red, I believe it
Your purple is purple, I believe it
Your God is great amen
Your poem is a perfect poem
Not to mention the smoke.

I'm numb with all the trees
It may or may not have been crowded.
I lost it on the streets and found it in my pocket
But the streets were like this
The trees were like this
But what is your name
Don't disturb my balance

My love and my realities may change
Against a sparkling wavy sea
I've stretched out sideways in knee deep in water
I smile at you all with good will.
I can't fight any of you
I have a secret I know
Your red is truly red, I believe it
Your purple is purple, I believe it

I'm just like me
I'm right for the world
But what is your name
Don't disturb my balance

TURGUT UYAR

In the news segment we refer to the drama about some premature endings of new dizis that came out in Ramadan and OGM Medya cancelling all its projects other than Yalı Çapkını.

Episode Notes

Dizi Friends is back for a new season where we talk about dizis we are currently watching. This episode is about Kızıl Goncalar which we initially discuss alongside some dizis with similar themes about conservative people in Turkey such as Ömer, Kızılcık Şerbeti and Netflix's Kübra. If you are already watching Kızıl Goncalar you'll find some commentary on what we think of the characters and the plot. If you haven't started watching it yet, the episode might give you an idea about what to expect. Second half of the episode may contain spoilers, you'll be notified during our conversation.

Episode Notes

In the fourth episode (which is our longest episode yet but we promise it’s a fun one!) Maha and Eda talk about their favorite villains in dizis whether they are female or male. They also mention some ways in which villains are portrayed, which turns into a bit of a rant but we think listeners will relate to most of it. The rant goes from Freud to the Bechdel test and to many other areas about film-making but we think it’s important that the message goes out to writers about how women are portrayed as villains in some dizis. Hope you enjoy and please share your thoughts with us as we always love hearing from you and learning your thoughts. Here are the dizis and characters that are mentioned throughout the episode and the links to the articles that were also mentioned.
