Big Eye Branding founder Matthew Fitzsimons shares how he and twin brother Roger, built a fantastic business on the back of the brewers and beverage companies in Africa.

Starting in 1993, SAB aggressively expanded outside its home country, they invested in Eastern Europe, in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Management control was gained of breweries in Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Tanzania, Mozambique, Ghana, Kenya, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, and Uganda during this period. All these brewers had one thing in common, they needed promotional and marketing material.

There to take advantage of this opportunity Matthew and Roger founded Big Eye Branding to supply world class marketing material to 47 countries in these underserved markets.

<itunes:subtitle>It's more than a job, it's a calling!</itunes:subtitle>

What started as a student job, became a career decision! Andrew started his pupillage (apprenticeship) at Bavaria Bräu in 1992 under supervision of the proprietor, Bavarian brewmaster, George Funk. Andrew started with brew no 3.

Andrew studied microbiology and got some work experience in a lab, a dairy, a pathology lab and at an effluent plant. After that I guess it made his decision to become a brewer an easy one.

Andrew shares his memories of the beautiful brewery at Bavaria Bräu. And we reminisce about the beautiful pub at the brewery which was always open on Friday’s. The pub was central to the culture of the brewery. We remember Mr Funk always ordering a "Pfiff" (the smallest measure of beer in Bavaria) 1/4 beer and 3/4 foam, when he was not quiet ready to leave, but had had enough to drink.

Lots of wonderful memories from this brewery that sadly was probably 10-15 years before its time. Sadly there is also not much history about this brewery as it was all before the internet.

https://www.drinksworld.co.za/john-murray-international-cider-maker/

We talk about the launch of Two Dogs in South Africa and the lessons learned from that event.

Andrews then had a stint as Project Manager - New Product Development at SAB and he shares the back story to the relaunch of Lion Lager in 2000 that bombed out so badly.

After a short stint at Alrode Maltings, Andrew moved on to SAB’s Training Institute, which set him up for his second career, which for the last 20 years has been training, trying to pass on the knowledge to the next generation, passing on some of the traditions, passing on some of the pride in the craft, because brewing is more than a job its a calling.

Andrew Downes about SAB: SAB had an incredibly rich heritage, there were good traditions. They didn’t get to no 2 in the world by mistake. They were tough. They took no prisoners. They understood their business and they measured everything: If it moved you measured it. If it didn’t move, you kicked it until it moved and then you measured it. And if it still didn’t move, you painted it yellow and black! SAB was very cost conscious, not overly privileged, there was no tolerance for waste. The competition had no chance!

Andrew then joined Global Beverage Solution as a travel trainer, and he continues to work as a freelance brewer and trainer. He lives about 5kms from Swagga Breweries where you will often find him busy in the brewery.

Then Andrew shares some wonderful stories from all the countries he has visited in Africa and around the world, since starting his training career.

Marius Botha is the owner and brewer at Hazeldean Brewing Co. based on Hazeldean Valley farm in Pretoria east. Hazeldean Valley is a 100 hectare estate which offers mountain biking, trail running and a weekend market. http://www.hazeldeanvalley.co.za/

Marius talks to Holger Meier about realising his dream to building his own brewery and he shares how he managed to survive for the last 8 years, since giving up his corporate gig as engineer. He talks about the value of contract brewing for startups and they discuss the importance of (farmers) markets as incubators for new businesses in South Africa.

Besides his core range, Marius also has a barrel program, where he experiments with lambics and other sour and barrel aged beers.

Hazeldean beers are available online or at Liquor City Groenkloof and on tap at Capital Craft in Pretoria.

Metal Tank Industries supplied the brewing equipment and Bevan from DraughtCraft is his go to supplier for dispensing equipment. Marius relied on Brewhogs Micro-Brewery, OC Brewery and Draymans Brewery & Distillery to contract brew his beer for the last 7-8 years and Africa Hops supply the speciality hops for dry hopping his lambics. You can listen to this conversation on YouTube or on your favourite podcasting app.

SXOLLIE was founded by Laura and Karol, in sunny South Africa way back in 2014. The simple idea they had was to make single varietal ciders from the apples we all already know and love - Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, and Cripps Pink or the Pink Lady.

In 2017 they decided to move their head office to the UK. We catch up with Laura Clacey to see how this has worked out for them.

Today's guest is Monica du Preez, a veteran in the beverage industry. Monica runs Qualican Contract Canning and Packing, an automated beverage canning facility in Krugersdorp in Gauteng.

Monica explains that there are many canning facilities in SA, what makes Qualican so unique is that it has an inline sleeving facility. That means the cans are filled and sealed and then washed before they go to the sleever. Other canning facilities can also fill sleeved cans but they are often damaged during the canning process. At Qualican the packaged can is spotless because they are sleeved right at the end of the packing process.

A minimum print run of a normal printed can is 250 000 cans or 10000 cases at Qualican can you can probably start with about a 1000 cases.

Qualican can can anything from 200ml to 500ml cans.

Monica went into some detail explaining the steps in getting a new product packaged and ready to go to market. She can even assist in getting the correct licences for liquor products.

Susanne Schneider, a German-born hospitality veteran with Michelin-star experience, first met the self-starting young South African Ashlin Bantom in 2015, when he applied for an assistant position at her western Cape restaurant, Springfield Easts. The Schneider's popular restaurant was one of gin pioneer, Lorna Scott's, first outlets, where busloads of German tourists enjoyed the popular Inverroche craft gin with their meals.

What next? The lockdown forced the unlikely partners to team up and find a new way to make a living. The result Flower Power, a uniquely South African Vermouth.

While Susanne focuses on establishing a European market for Flower Power Vermouth, Ashlin is hard at work convincing local gin lovers to try his popular vermouth and tonic, or V+T as he calls it. Vermouth mixed with local craft tonic Barker & Quinn.

Vermouth is a fortified and aromatised wine, basically, wine spiked with brandy and then infused with herbs and spices and sweetened.

Welcome to a new episode of DrinksWorld, where we celebrate and connect entrepreneurs in the beverage industry in South Africa.

Rob Heyns is back for this episode. It is always fun to chat to Rob because his approach to business so different, he sees opportunities that no one else sees and then come up with really amazing concepts and products.

This is not a stock standard bottle store, this is about enticing customers to try different things. There is a big gifting element, so the packaging is important, making it look pretty, making the unboxing an experience, its the gift you buy for yourself. - Rob Heyns

Rob, together with Nzeka Biyela, launched the League of Beers way back in 2012 with the goal of getting South Africa drinking better beer. Fast forward many years and thousands of beers later, and they’ve joined forces yet again (along with a few mates) to take a delicious dive into the best spirits the country has to offer. Visit the new site at https://thebeverageclub.co.za/

Curation is a monstrous challenge, you are working passionate producers, when you are working with craft producers, it is about product first, it is not necessary about having the most predictable operational processes. It is like herding cats, but it is worth it, because you get really cool curations and mixes for the end consumer.

With their experience the team has become the go to Direct-to-consumer, Gifting and Curation consultants for local and international clients.

<itunes:subtitle>Super Bock distributor in South Africa</itunes:subtitle>

Hylton Smith was part of the team that first introduced Windhoek beers to the Botswana market, he then moved to Durban and joined Ian and Peter Hoyer at Team Liquor Distributors to head up sales of Windhoek beers. Hylton recalls only selling a truckload of Windhoek in their first year, but only a short four years later they sold an interlink of Windhoek beers per day during the peak season.

Then in 2004, thinking that they were well on their way to becoming a real player in the liquor industry, Namibian Breweries announced the formation of Brandhouse, a joint venture with Heineken and Diageo.

Hylton opted not to become part of the new corporation and joined former Windhoek colleagues Andre Homann and Craig MacKenzie in selling Bavaria beers.

Andre Homann and a few former Windhoek guys then made an offer to purchase NMK Schulz from Norbert Schulz. NMK had the agency for Stella Artois, a brand which the beer guys hoped they could grow into a significant player in the local market.

Hylton, now a shareholder, continued working at Team Liquor Distributors.

When Ray Edwards started Tops at Spar the market started to change and in order to survive, distributors had to be able to service national chain stores.

In 2016 Hylton took on new financial partners, with funds to open branches nationally they could now service national chains such as Pick n Pay.

In 2018 Hylton was approached by Super Bock to distribute their beer in South Africa. At the time Super Bock was only available at the Liquor City stores. The brand was on a good growth trajectory, claiming to sell 15000 containers a year in Angola at the time.

Super Bock is the leading beer brand in Portugal with a market share of more than 50% The Super Bock Group is a privately held company founded in 1890 based in Porto, Portugal.

Hylton continues by sharing some interesting stories about his travels to Porto, their strategy with the brand and his journey so far. Well worth a listen!

In this episode, our guest is Craft Gin's favourite son, Glenn Bryant, co-owner of the Six Dog Distillery. Glenn shares their 5+ year journey with us. I have watched Glenn and his team closely over the last 5 years and love the way that these industry newcomers have focused on building relationships rather than rushing into outsourcing sales and distribution to third parties. A very good lesson for new brand owners.

From sixdogs.co.za to sixdogs.com

Glenn has always wanted to create a product that is good enough to become a global brand. Six Dogs is already exported to 23 markets. During the liquor lockdown in South Africa, Glenn realised just how vulnerable and exposed they are to the local market, and we are very excited to hear that Six Dogs has opened a European office in the Netherlands. Following the example of the many "European Swallows", Glenn plans to work in the Netherlands during the European summers and in Cape Town during the South African summer. We wish Glenn and the Six Dogs team all the best in this exciting new venture and trust that their work will also benefit the South African craft industry as a whole.

Carl Grossmann from Brackenhill Distillery in Waterfall, KwaZulu-Natal is our guest in this episode. I first met Carl when he was working on a project to import Malawi Gin. Carl fell in love with Malawi (Gin) when he was on an overland trip through that beautiful country. Malawi Gin is owned by a big conglomerate that did not want to grant exclusive distribution rights to anyone, so Carl moved on and now owns his own distillery.

Carl uses ancient heritage grain varieties as a basis for their gin, vodka and whiskey. His packaging, logos and labels also reflect his local roots. Umzuzwane, or lemon bush, a small, fragrant plant gives the gin a local flavour.

The distillery offers a very impressive gin making experience and also sells their products directly to the public. The distillery was recently featured on Inside Africa on CNN: https://edition.cnn.com/videos/tv/2021/03/11/inside-africa-craft-alcohol-beer-liquor-spc.cnn

https://www.brackenhillcraft.co.za/

Welcome to Drinksworld, a beverage industry podcast. Our guest is Elzette Marais owner and distiller of Majamela Distilleries in Polokwane. Polokwane is about 2 hours drive north of Tswane and about 2 hours drive from the Zimbabwe border. Polokwane is a thriving city that services the Limpopo province. Neels Marais started home distilling about 25 years ago. Recently his daughter Elzette caught the distilling bug and joined him in the little venture. Today Majemela is a fully licensed commercial distillery. The surrounding farmlands are very fertile and the father and daughter team distill whatever seasonal fruit they can get their hands on. Commercially they produce a range of gins as well as an alcoholic shake. This dairy-based ready-to-drink product is unique and definitely one of a kind in South Africa. Majamela is currently looking for distribution partners across South Africa.

A Beverage Industry Podcast with Holger Meier

Listen to Tony da Costa owner of Liquor City Claremont, one of my favourite speciality liquor stores in South Africa. Tony does so much of what we stand for and teach at DrinksBiz.

Tony da Costa opened his little Liquor City Claremont and an OK store only 7 years ago. From the beginning Tony focused on service and on being different. Tony’s team has a tremendous amount of product knowledge and always try use their knowledge to help and up-sell their customers. From the start Tony did not want a typical Liquor Store to compete with Chain Stores, he wanted something different. When asked if anyone can copy this concept, Tony thinks he is lucky to be in a good area, but everyone can make a success by being different and supporting smaller brands. BUT it is not easy. It is a FULL TIME business placing orders and find new brands. The bottle store does 2.5 times the turnover of a supermarket. Tony has 3 people who are employed to place the 300 - 400 orders every week. 40% of Tony’s turnover is from wine.

Tips for a good wine business: Keep lots of stock!

Tony has a whisky club, with about 100 members, that meets once a month. Where a brand ambassadors present products. A Gin club is next on the cards.

Beer about 43% is craft and import and the rest Heineken and SAB in Rand value. He does promote the smaller brands by giving less exposure and space to them.

Liquor City Claremont is a destinations store and customers travel from all over to visit the store. People will travel if you offer good service and a good selection. Tony spends a lot of time in the store himself.

Tony meets with his team once a week to discuss the business and train them about new products.

Tony has noticed that all the chains are reducing their craft beer selection so he is increasing his range of local craft and imported beer. Canned Craft beer is working very well. Rob Heyns has started a mobile canning operation, Tiny Keg, that is supplying many exciting new beers in cans.

Tony has a massive selection of 500 whiskies. Tony makes sure his knowledge of whisky is better than other retailers.

Poison City is a lifestyle brand built around Durban and its surfing lifestyle.

Poison City: Holger talks to Graeme "Surfing" Bird from Poison City Brewing about what makes Durban famous: Is it the harbour, Johnny’s Chip & Cheese Roti's, no it's Surfing and the Rebel Lifestyle.

Graeme wants to creating a brand that makes Durban proud.

Poison City brewed their first beer, The Bird Lager, with Sean and Paul at That Brewing Company, the second beer, The Punk Rocker, an English Pale Ale with Jason at Toti Brewing Company, then The Kiff, a Belgian Wit with Shaun Standeaven and then The Other Bird, a Czech Dark Lager, which was developed by Czech brewing veteran Ladislav Vesely. Next up is the Wedge, an American style, Imperial Pale Ale, and then when the time is right, Graeme is planning to launch a mass market beer, called Durban Poison.

Lessons from Kevin Hedderwick, from Famous Brands, etc

Poison City beers are available in over 100 outlets in Kzn and over 200 nationally, e.g. Tops at Spar, Beerhouse, Republik, Bananjam, etc

We chat with Manfred Haf who worked for Dr Anton Rupert’s Rembrandt Group selling tobacco products, Intercontinental Breweries. IC brands included Kronenbrau 1308, Heidelberg, Sportsman Lager & Colt 45. The Beer war of the 70’s lasted for about 7 years, before IC was sold to SAB in return for a controlling share in Stellenbosch Farmers Winery.

Manfred tells how SAB dominated the market and how they managed to capture a significant portion of the market in South Africa. IC got a lot of exposure with their Clydesdale horse wagons.

In 1980’s Manfred helped Namibian Breweries open depots in Johannesburg and Cape Town to launch Windhoek Beer in South Africa.

Today Manfred helps Flare Beverages as the national sales manager. We talk Erdinger, Paulaner & Bitburger.

Manfred's motto: offer a good product and support it with good service.

There are some exiting new developments on the horizon that we are looking forward to.
