Ron has lived his entire adult life as a black man in a white world. In 2016 he had both a crisis of his Christian faith as well as a racial identity crisis (you can guess why). Since then he’s been on a journey to reconnect with his blackness in a way he never has before. Joining him will be his Black BFFs and the “Bow & Dre” to his “Junior,” JD and Yolanda T. Cochran. Every episode they’ll discuss issues of race and religion, politics and pop culture. Shade will be thrown. Jokes will be made. And provocative conversations will be had. He’s just one nerdy Oreo tryna become a double-fudge brownie y’all. So go easy on a brutha. (Note: Season 1 originally aired via the Ebony Podcast Network when it was live.)

In celebration of Pride Month, this week Ron's has an inspiring and moving interview with musician and queer Christian, Grace Baldrige of Semler Music. Grace was the host and producer of the Refinery 29 video series "State of Grace" which explored the intersection of faith and the LGBTQ+ community. The series garnered over six million views, and as an accomplished musician, Grace has grown to become a respected influencer speaking to the issues that face queer Christians.

On the heels of all the exciting Star Wars news in the world (e.g. the release of "Obi Wan Kenobi" and the Star Wars Celebration), we're pulling out of mothballs one of the early podcast episodes created by Ron, JD, and Yolanda. Part of Ron's old "Radio Film School" show, this episode is a fun discussion about the women characters in the Star Wars universe. (This originally aired in December 2016, right after "Rogue One" premiered. But it still holds up today.")
The next regular episode will be a look at season 3 of Atlanta. You won't want to miss it. Until then, enjoy this bonus.

If this is your first time listening to the podcast, this episode is for you. It's a collection of some of the best moments on the show this season. The craziest and most comical conversations and debates. From the infamous "online" fiasco, to crabs in a barrel, to deleted scenes, to previews of comedy to come. This is a long one; but every blackety-black and merry moment is utterly worth it!

[Reposted from the now defunct Ebony Podcast Network]

This is part 2 of a special 2-part series on Ron's faith journey. It's a journey that started in November 2016 with the election of a certain sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot as POTUS, and the evangelical church's support of said man. Ron was one of the millions of people whose faith was thrown topsy-turvy as he struggled with how to process what it means to no longer believe how (or what) you used to believe.

In this special episode, you'll hear from three Christian podcasters, a Christian hip-hop music video director, and a Lutheran Pastor about how their respective faith journeys led them to where they are now. If you're a person who has dealt with the deconstruction of your Christian faith, this podcast is a love letter to you.

Ron totally forgot last week was Good Friday. There once was a time when he would've been at a Good Friday service, meditating on the stations of the cross. This Good Friday, he was writing a podcast script about how his Christian faith has been turned topsy-turvey. This is the first in a special 2-part series where we get into the faith aspect of Ron's journey. Oh, and Ron, JD, and Yolanda have one of their patented debates—would most American Christians be open to the idea of extraterrestrial life? And what would make a better movie script—finding Noah's Ark, or a real-life alien spaceship?

Let's cut to the chase. You're all tired of talking about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars. But, as always, we have an angle that's quite different. Namely, what does Will Smith slapping the sh*t out of Chris Rock have anything to do with Ron's journey.?A lot, actually. This week we look at the theme of trauma and old wounds.

Ron finally watches a movie that saves his Black Card (although, some may say the jury is still out as to whether he even has one).

Other than perhaps music, no other art form plays as indelible a role and influence on Black people as the cinema. From how we are depicted to even how we watch it. So it’s no surprise then that our “hero” has some cinematic tastes that may catch him a side-eye (or two).

In this hilarious episode of the podcast, we journey down memory lane as Ron shares some of his earliest podcast conversations with JD and Yolanda—conversations that help lay the groundwork for both this show, and Ron’s journey to Blackness.

[Reposted from the now defunct Ebony Podcast Network]

Last month Showtime released a new 3-part documentary series called "Everything's Gonna Be All White." It is a creative, compassionate, and often biting look at racism and race relations in America. Ron loved it. Ben Shapiro...not so much. Well, technically, Ben hasn't seen it. Yet, his review of just the trailer got Ron so riled up, he made his own reaction video to Ben's trash reaction video.

But why did Ron get so upset at this review? You'd think Shapiro trashed Ron's own documentary. Well, in the exploration of that question, Ron stumbled upon an important revelation that could have a profound impact on the podcast! This is a must-listen episode.

[Reposted from the now defunct Ebony Podcast Network]

On February 25, President Joseph R. Biden nominated Judge Kentaji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court of the United States. If confirmed, Judge Jackson will be the first black woman to sit on the most powerful bench in the nation. (She's already made history being the first Black woman nominated! It only took a cupla hundred years!)

When President Biden made his announcement a few weeks ago that he’d nominate a Black woman, as expected, the right-wing conservative movement lost their collective sh*t. Political columnist and "The Bulwark Editor" Bill Kristol tweeted that Biden shouldn’t have announced it. He should have just done it, without making a public display. That tweet stirred up some discussion among Ron, JD, and Yolanda about the topic. So much so that they made this episode. Which, is a perfect topic to form a bridge from Black History Month to Women’s History Month.
Email your thoughts to podcast@dungeonsndurags.com. Do you think it was a good idea for Biden to do that? Is it all much ado about nothing?

It’s February! The time of the year when everyone in the country takes time to learn about the accomplishments of a half dozen or so important luminaries in the history of Black America. Besides being the month of celebrating love, the presidents, and hoping that a persnickety rodent doesn’t see his shadow, February is also Black History Month. But why on earth do we only have a month? Has Black History Month outlived its purpose?

This week Ron, JD, Yolanda, and several different guests share their thoughts and feelings. This will perhaps be the most important Black History Month podcast you listen to.

On the last episode of the show, Ron, JD, and Yolanda explored the use of the n-word in film and art. This week the crew revisits the topic by specifically addressing the issue of whether white people should ever be able to say that word (outside of an acting role). You’ll also hear from half a dozen other filmmakers sharing their thoughts on the topic.

There’s one word in the English language that is the granddaddy of all taboo words. A word so bad that the majority of people in the world only refer to it as its first letter. Today Ron, JD, and Yolanda discuss the usage of that word in film.

[Reposted from the now defunct Ebony Podcast Network]

Here’s a news flash for you. Jesus wasn’t white. He also wasn’t born on December 25. But chances are, you probably already knew those two little tidbits. But what else about Christmas is “myth”? Today on the show, Ron continues along his journey of deconstruction of his faith by looking at Christmas traditions and how it’s changed for him, Yolanda, and JD over the years. This is not the episode to listen to if you’re afraid of having your beliefs challenged. But if your heart and mind are open to new ways of looking at this treasured holiday, we promise you’ll be moved.

Our guests include Bald Move podcast co-host A.Ron Hubbard who shares his own personal journey as an ex-Jehovah’s Witness. And the Reverend Dr. Robert Richard Allen Turner and author Victoria Adams each share perspectives about faith and belief give Ron hope (and just might do the same for you).

[Reposted from the now defunct Ebony Podcast Network]

Let’s settle this once and for all. Shall we?

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of rapper Tupac Shakur. Whatever you think of him, he left an indelible impact on the world of hip-hop. So much so that even dudes like Ron, who aren’t particularly into the scene, gravitate towards his fiery lyrics. And without a doubt, ‘Pac’s diss track “Hit ‘em up” is one of the most influential and biting that ever was recorded. And it just happens to be Ron’s favorite.

So it’s perhaps no surprise that he and good buddy JD would find this as yet another topic of “discussion.” You see, for JD, there’s no diss track as hard and cold-blooded Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline” Note: in this version of the phrase “cold-blooded,” JD does not mean “fine” or “beautiful” (you had to listen to episode 2 to get that reference. 😂)

Which is the better diss rap: “Hit ‘em Up” or “No Vaseline”? Today Ron conducts a very “scientific” study to get down to the bottom of this and find a satisfying answer. The outcome may surprise you.

Email your thoughts to podcast@dungeonsndurags.com. Or use the widget below to tell us what you think. Who had the best diss? And why?

This is a special bonus companion to episode 3, “Squids, Crabs, and Barrels! Oh my!” If you haven’t already listened to that, be sure to check it out. It’s a riot. This bonus episode is a departure from the usual, documentary style of the main series. It’s just a straight up raw discussion of the show. In addition to discussion the entire series, we also cover such topics as the cultural differences between Koran and America that affect who we react to the show, and what we think
Guest stars on this episode include: FD Signifier (from the YouTube channel of the same name), Salima Koroma (a documentary filmmaker), and this episode’s white guest, A.Ron Hubbard of the Bald Move podcasts.

Ron is obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge—about whether or not knowing the term “crabs in a barrel” is worse than not knowing what “online” meant. In this “Squid Game” inspired episode, Ron asks every guest on the show if they know the term: FD Signifier (from the YouTube channel of the same name), Salima Koroma (a documentary filmmaker), and this episode’s white guest, A.Ron Hubbard of the Bald Move podcasts. After a hilarious exploration about “crabs in a barrel,” Ron introduces A.Ron, FD, JD, and Yolanda to a homemade Black version of “Squid Game” that Ron affectionately calls “Skid Game.” You will be surprised at how the game goes down.

Ron tells the story of his very black childhood and how it morphed into white adulthood. JD and Yolanda learn of yet another (supposedly) common Black term Ron doesn’t know. (Cackling ensues). Joining Ron, JD, and Yolanda are Ron’s friend and fellow Black marketing guy Frederick VanJohnson of the This Week in Photo podcast (and fellow lone black man in a white working world). Frederick shares his own personal story. He’s also tested to see how many Black terms he knows vs. Ron.

This week we’re also blessed with the presence of the hilarious comedian, writer, producer, and now feature director Chris Spencer. Chris and Ron went to South Pasadena High School together, and Chris shares more hilarious stories from their time together at school.

Ron has lived his entire adult life as a Black man in a white world. Most of his friends were white, most of his co-workers were white, and he attended white hipster churches. Then in 2016 with the election of #45, everything changed. He had a crisis of faith and a racial identity crisis that sent him on a quest to reconnect with his blackness in a way he never has before. In this inaugural episode, meet Ron and his Black BFFs JD and Yolanda (whom he affectionately refers to as the “Dre & Bow” to his “Junior.”) Find out why this show exists and what to expect. Laughter will ensue.
