August 9 - Genesis 1:1, 26-31

What difference does knowing where we come from make in our lives? We might think about this regarding a home town, or our family, or our university. But what about the more abstract reality of our humanity? The gospel of Jesus and our hope in him doesn't come to us "out of the blue"; it doesn't come empty of context. To understand Jesus and all that he has come to do in our lives demands knowing where we come from; why we're here. And that takes us to the very beginning. The beginning of our story. The beginning of everything. And what God tells us is that we are here because of his desire to create and share a good world with us, so we could enjoy it with him, his way.

August 2 - Hebrews 11:32-40

It seems obvious to say that our lives are much more like a marathon than a sprint, but it doesn't always seem obvious or easy to live that way. A marathon is long, winding, and dotted with ups and downs. Not only is life like that, but our faith journey is too. We experience triumphs. We experience trials. We experience "blah". Perhaps the greatest similarity between our faith journey and a marathon is the struggle to finish, to persevere to the end. Yet finishing is the only option to reach the prize. As we wrap up this series in Hebrews 11, we'll look at the secret for endurance: Joy. And the secret to the secret is where we set our eyes: not on our circumstances, but on the promise of the end.

Courage and resilience are traits that go hand in hand. Courage could be described as an attitude, motivation, or will to press into dangerous and uncertain situations and decisions. And resilience is the strength to endure, rebuild and persevere through what comes after. Both courage and resilience are demanded of us in all of life, and especially in our life of faith. Following Jesus might cost us relationships, being misunderstood, or promotions at work, just to name a few. Where do we find the resources to follow Him with courage and resilience? This week, from the life of Moses, we'll see that courage comes through living by faith in God's Power, Promise, Presence, and Purchase.

If you're honest with yourself, how often do you think about everything you see as being created by God? That everything has its source – owes its existence – to God? And, honestly, what difference does that make to your daily life? The Christian faith is clear: the God of the Bible is the only and true Creator of the universe. And knowing and acknowledging him as the Creator of this world and of lives is foundational to a faith that produces resilience. Why? Because not only is He the true Creator, he is the Creator who truly cares for us.

June 21 - Matthew 7:24-29

In His final parable, Jesus concludes his sermon with a now-famous illustration of two builders, one who built his house on bedrock while the other built his on sand. Both experienced the rain, floods, and winds, but it was their foundation that determined whether it was life or destruction. Jesus invites His hearers to respond in faith that is built upon Him, our rock of salvation. For it is only through Him that we can experience the blessed life of living for God in His way and by His power.

June 14 - Matthew 7:13-23

Each day is filled with choices, some big, some mundane and routine. But there are some days, some times in our lives, where the choices we face are different. They are substantial, consequential, filled with commitment, and bring change to our lives. And as much as we might want to ignore them or go around them, we can't. We have to choose. As we approach the end of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents us with a choice that we can't go around: what will we do with him and his claims? It's a choice everyone must make. And even though it can appear hard and be the minority response, choosing Him and His way really is the way, the only way, that leads to life.

Something we have in common as human beings is that we like to be right. We like it so much we’ll even deny the truth to make it feel that way, even truth about ourselves. Psychologists use a term to describe this tendency, confimration bias. Jesus uses another term: judgmentalism. This week's passage holds one of the most famous lines from the entire Bible, "Do not judge, or you too will be judged." Though it's well-known, it's not well understood. What if judging was less about verbal comments and more about the attitude of our hearts? This week, Jesus will lead us into a conversation relevant to each one of us, so that he can give us access to the changes in our lives we all desire.

One reason Jesus' teaching in the Sermon on the Mount is so powerful and poignant is that He speaks to issues central to our daily lives and experiences. In this passage, Jesus presses into an issue we all know: worry and anxiety. Why do you worry about your life? The power of anxiety stems from us living in the "what if’s" of life. And a reality of worry, of anxiety, is that we hate it! We want to be free from it. The good news is that Jesus wants us to be free from it too.

As we engage with Jesus' teaching, he so often takes what we would see as normal or obvious and turns it upside down. In this passage, Jesus does this by asking us: what are you banking your life on? And is it worth it? A core human need, common to everyone, is security and significance. Whether we realize it or not, whatever we're banking our life on is what we expect to make us secure and tell us we're significant. Jesus has a word for this: our treasure. The question he wants to challenge us with is, have we chosen the right one?

Jesus' teaching often enters a time and place, enters our own heart, takes what we would see as normal or obvious and turns it upside down. In this passage, Jesus does this by asking us, who is the audience for whom you are living your life? As we live our lives, people see us. As we make choices, speak, act, there is often recognition for what do – someone observes and responds. The question Jesus has for us is, whose recognition are we most seeking, are we most wanting, and why? And the reason Jesus asks us this question not simply to challenge or confuse us, but to lead us to rest and joy in our everyday experience of life with him.
