Scotty has known and worked with actor/writer/producer/filmmaker/development-executive Lauren Chavez-Myers for over 15 years now. Aside from being friends, they collaborated on a number of shorts before embarking on the feature film "Dead Billy" (2016).

In the first part of this two-part episode, Lauren talks about her life as an actor on stage, in movies, and on television, and the transition she made toward working as a TV development executive for Hasbro Entertainment. They discuss the satisfaction of creation, struggling with self-imposed pressure, balancing film and theatre work, what exactly "development" means, and more.

And he's a massive horror fan!

Scotty and Chad first met 21-years ago while making the short film "Something Red," which was Scotty's first solo outing as a director and his tribute to "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." On this episode, Scotty and Chad talk about the process of making that short film, and then they wax poetic about Tobe Hooper's grindhouse classic. They discuss growing up as a pair of lonely horror geeks in the Albuquerque region, traveling to fan fests throughout the greater Southwest, and how doing so inspired them to start their own event here at home. They describe the challenges of organizing a festival--from the logistics of raising money, contacting guests, finding venues, and even figuring out parking for attendees--to the fun stuff of coming up with unique features and helping to build a dedicated and thriving community of "505" horror fans.

"Oddity," "Horse Girl," "Until Dawn," and "Heretic" with Mandy Connor

Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about four movies. She and Scotty start with the best of the bunch: the truly frightening 2024 Irish mystery-horror film "Oddity," by writer/director Damian Mc Carthy and featuring a standout performance from Carolyn Bracken. They then shift gears with 2020's oddball but impressive indie psychological drama/sci-fi horror movie "Horse Girl," directed by the late Jeff Baena and co-written by star Alison Brie.

Things take a marked turn for the worse with this year's "Until Dawn," a severely undercooked and trope-heavy adaptation of the beloved PlayStation game. They finish off with the promising (but ultimately disappointing) "Heretic" (2024), starring Hugh Grant, Chloe East, and Sophie Thatcher, and written/directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods.

Scotty and Mandy also give some love to the recent trailer for "The Long Walk," and Mandy sings the praises of "Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made" (2018).

WARNING: Scotty and Mandy tried to avoid major spoilers for most of the movies discussed, but you should proceed with caution nonetheless. To be honest, they didn't try all that hard for "Until Dawn."

This week Scotty talks to Bram Stoker Award-winning author/editor James Chambers about his upcoming anthology "Where the Silent Ones Watch" (Oct 6, Hippocampus Press). Featuring genre luminaries like John Langan, Nancy Holder, Lee Murray, Michael Cisco, and many more, this anthology is inspired by the work of famed weird fiction writer William Hope Hodgson — author of the classic novels "The Boats of the Glen Carrig" (1907), "The House on the Borderland" (1908), and "The Night Land" (1912), creator of the great ghost finder Thomas Carnacki, and envisioner of the epic (and terrifying) Sargasso Sea.

Scotty and James talk about Hodgson's work, singular creative vision, and short life (which ended tragically during World War I). They dive deep into the new anthology, discussing many of the stories and poems and talking about James' process in curating the book. They also spend a bit of time on James' earlier anthology "Under Twin Suns: Alternate Histories of the Yellow Sign" (2021, Hippocampus Press), a similar project inspired by the work of Robert W. Scotty talks to author, editor, and publisher Aric Sundquist about growing up a "Yooper" in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and how his mother's love of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, sparked his early interest in dark fiction. Aric discusses the influence of Koontz, King (especially his 1978 collection "Night Shift" and the subsequent 1985 anthology film adaptation "Cat's Eye"), Lovecraft, and fantasy writers like Tolkien, Jordan, and Tad Williams on his work, and how Aric's rediscovery of Ray Bradbury's more macabre tales as an MFA candidate in Creative Writing informed his decision to move specifically into writing horror.

Aric also talks about the lessons he learned in his creative writing program, and how he applies them to his work as an editor and publisher at Dark Peninsula Press, the independent publishing company he founded in 2019. He and Scotty talk about the anthologies Dark Peninsula Press has produced (spoiler alert: Scotty's stories have appeared in just about all of them), and Aric outlines his vision for the company's future.

Scotty talks to comic-book artist and writer Aaron Campbell about his early horror influences from Dungeons and Dragons, T.E.D. Klein, and H.P. Lovecraft, and the labyrinthine path through the early days of his career. They discuss "Infidel" (2018, Image Comics), Aaron's acclaimed collaboration with writer Pornsak Pichetshote and colorist José Villarrubia, which was named one of NPR's "100 Favorite Horror Stories of All Time" in 2018.

They spend time on Aaron's current work with DC Comics in the "Hellblazer" and "Sandman" universe, and finish with a long conversation about Aaron's writing debut with the Hammer-Horror influenced "West of Sundown" (Vault Comics), his collaboration with co-writer Tim Seeley and artist Jim Terry. Aaron talks about bridging the gap between disparate genres (gothic horror and the "Spaghetti Western"), and the importance of representing the truth of America's southwestern colonial past, even in the context of genre fiction.

Boston-bestie Mandy Connor returns to talk about two movies and a novel. She and Scotty begin with their disappointment in the 2023 Heather Graham vehicle "Suitable Flesh," a supposed "spiritual successor" to the classically bonkers 1980s Stuart Gordon films "Re-Animator" (1985) and "From Beyond" (1986). Things improve significantly with their discussion of Karyn Kusama's paranoid masterpiece "The Invitation" (2015) and the superlative 2023 folk-horror novel "Old Country" by Matt and Harrison Query. Mandy also has a few positive words at the end about Joe Hill's new novelette "The Pram."
