Matt & Steve return from the All-Star break to talk about the season to forget, but it turns out there's actually a lot to talk about! They start with feeling old looking at the 2024 Hall of Fame class, talk about the possibility that the Jays are looking to get below the CBT, a little bit about the All-Star game, the upcoming trade deadline, and more bad injury luck. Steve disliked the Apple TV broadcast this past Friday but is bullish on the Springer-Horwitz-Vlad trio, while Matt is happy Swanson is back in the lineup. A quick look at the MLB draft and a look ahead at the 2025 schedule.

Plus - would you try the Royals' "Taste of the K Taco"?

Topics of discussion include Daulton Varsho's pair of amazing catches in Seattle, Jose Cuas' dubious record-setting outing, the rash of injuries affecting the roster, and Vlad starting at 1B for the All-Star game, and comments about his durability. Around the league, the Rockies are under FAA investigation because of a video posted (and later deleted) showing a coach unaccompanied in the cockpit; New York Mets' City Connect jerseys; the return of the Player's Weekend; and who invented the high five?

It was a bit of a rough go over the last fortnight, coming into Sunday's action below .500. Luckily, the AL East is mostly in the same boat behind the Yankees.

Both Matt & Steve aren't happy with the offence, with Steve focusing especially on George Springer; Matt talks about how un-Gausman-like Gausman has been so far this season; and some rehab updates about Jansen, Romano, and Swanson, as well as some notes on Alek Manoah's progress back to the majors.

A quick update on the Shohei Ohtani gambling controversy, Oakland moving to Sacramento for three years, and a discussion on an increase in pitchers suffering from season-ending arm injuries. Plus: did Taylor Swift's camp have input into the Rogers Centre Reno's?

In personal outcomes, Matt talks about his moving woes and Steve is paralyzed by the paradox of choice.

Matt and Steve reconvene to talk about the opening weekend for the Toronto Blue Jays (and MLB in general). They talk about the Jays decisive first win of the season (and 5th straight opening day win), Vlad's new spot in the lineup, the Cabrera shoving incident, and other Jays-related stuff. Plus a quick note on Shohei Ohtani's recent statement, Brandon Belt's lack of offers, and some crazy new ballpark food offerings from Seattle and Chicago. Plus: Is "WiFi PTSD" a real thing?

162 games are complete and the Blue Jays now have their Wild Card round matchup: the Minnesota Twins. Matt and Steve talk about the somewhat lacklustre week of baseball that saw the Jays lose two series vs. the Yankees and Rays, look ahead at the overall playoff picture, and Matt tries to argue for the logistics of an alligator as an emotional support animal.

Matt returns from his HALF marathon to talk about a much brighter week for the Blue Jays, who went on to win their third straight series leading into today's podcast. Matt's strikeout is everyone's strikeout: Anthony Bass. But happily the rest of the team's play overshadows that dark cloud and Bo Bichette was named to MLB's Team of the Month. Later, Matt reaches his goal of solving Worlde on his first guess.

Matt's away camping, so eldest Gower brother Glen joins Steve for a third appearance on the podcast to talk about the week that was in Blue Jays land. There was a much bigger focus on music and public transportation infrastructure this week, but they did manage to work in a conversation about Vlad's batting troubles. The big music conversations surrounded the Angels' attempt to bust their slump with Nickelback, and the wonderful 1977 Toronto Blue Jays Theme.

To answer last week's question, YES, the offence has been revived. Matt & Steve talk about the great week the Jays had, which started off with a sweep over the White Sox; the Twins/Jays Friday night game was part of a night tied for 4th in MLB history with home runs in one night; Buffalo Bisons' Nathan Lukes hits an inside-the-park grand slam; and the Baltimore Orioles have named Eve Rosenbloom as their new assistant GM. Plus our usual Twins & Titans check-ins! And - is the Door Dash car icon represented as a bullpen cart? Let us know!

Episode Notes

Matt & Steve talk about the off-season awards, and the Blue Jays cleaned up! A handful of silver slugger and a gold glove award but sadly no MVP in sight for Vlad. Also some talk about Charlie Montoyo getting robbed of any Manager of the Year awards, what catcher the Jays might think about trading with Moreno on the rise (hint: his name rhymes with Dirk), and a little CBA talk. Plus a Sens From Home update.

Steve & Matt talk about the World Series in general, some potential Blue Jays free agent moves and the qualifying offers extended to Ray and Semien (and the likely departure of Steven Matz). Also in the Sens From Home segment, we discuss the not-so-great game results but offset that with some positive news off the ice.

In this week's episode, Matt & Steve are joined by another special guest! Andrew Forbes, author of The Only Way is the Steady Way: Baseball, Ichiro, and How We Watch the Game. Also discussed was a poor week for the Blue Jays (which included 5 straight losses), Vlad's All-Star votes, digital scorekeeping, negative Internet reactions, and how maybe not watching the games has been a good thing this week.

But because we recorded on Saturday, we missed the great come-back win on Saturday (10-7) and the Father's Day Victory on Sunday (7-4).
