Episode#7: 42% Women in Power – Lessons from Taiwan

How did Taiwan become a global leader in gender equality and high-tech innovation?

In this episode, Mikhal Heffer sits down with Ms. Yaping Abby Lee, Taiwan’s Ambassador, to explore the unique business landscape of this island powerhouse. Taiwan isn’t just a leader in semiconductors; it’s a global model for women’s leadership, with women holding a staggering 42% of positions of power.

Mikhal also shares her personal connection to Taiwan—from her days as an East Asian Studies student to the story behind her Chinese name, 林美霞 (Lín Měi Xiá).

This episode is brought to you by Lichi Translations. Our connection to the Ambassador began when we provided simultaneous interpretation for her presentation on gender equality at the Zulat Institute.

Imagine you're Mike or Mary, an aspiring entrepreneur with dreams of launching a major burger chain.
You've got what seems like a brilliant marketing idea: a massive, bright yellow "M" that would be impossible to miss from the highway leading to your restaurant.

Everything sounds perfect, except for one tiny detail—there's already a rather successful burger chain using that exact symbol. You might have heard of them... McDonald's?

Well, it's only slightly similar, you might think. What could possibly go wrong?
Actually, quite a lot. A company's trademark, like McDonald's iconic "M," is legally protected, and even a slight infringement can result in serious financial consequences.

I recently discussed this topic on my podcast with Attorney Ariel Dubinsky, an expert in domestic and international trademark registration and intellectual property law.
He emphasized the importance of extreme caution in this complex field and warned against taking unnecessary risks.

As it happens, Ariel is also a client of Lichi Translations—we recently handled a Hebrew-to-Chinese trademark translation for him, complete with notarial certification for the benefit of an Israeli client who manufactures at a factory in China.

In our episode, we dive deep into the intricacies of translation projects, trademark registration, infringement, and protection.

Trust me, it's a fascinating discussion you won't want to miss!
