The highest grossing film of 1984 is our first entry in the Mt. Rushmore of Eddie Murphy.

In this particular instance we find ourselves shocked at the masses realizing a good thing immediately... and also the likability of Judge Reinhold as the straight man to the obviously more entertaining role of Axel Foley. In fact... most of the cops are surprisingly likable in this movie. But we won't promote that fact on Twitter. Just in these show notes. That hopefully no one is reading. Enjoy!

On Christmas Day 2020 we give you the holiday film that this year deserves: Doug Liman & John August's GO. We discuss the stars that were made (Melissa McCarthy gets her break in one scene of plot exposition) and those that weren't (still trying to figure out why Hollywood hates ginger men; actually we get it.) HOWEVER this being MARK AS PLAYED and Christmas we are never that far off from admiring the directing talents of Sarah Polley and also the equally skilled talents of sex workers. Your bitter host reads off some of the even more bitter comments from Perry and hopes to make Web as upset as everyone else involved with this project but in the end we just talk about GREEN BOOK. We discuss Steven Caple Jr. entering the ROCKY mythology and if this means anything to a franchise with such a long legacy of different voices. On BATMAN ON FILM the hosts talk about how Ryan Coogler made CREED his own, distinguishing the series from Sylvester Stallone's previous work with the character. And on TWO CHUNKS AND A HUNK the discussion revolves around how an individual filmmaker navigates a cinematic universe as seen in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP... which seems to have followed a lot of things left unresolved in some AVENGERS movie.

For our holiday special we get the MARK AS PLAYED family together to spend time away from their families. Which is a totally normal thing for movie podcasters, but also makes more sense as our subject for our first Christmas episode on Christmas movies that remove the family from the characters' lives. Our main focus is EYES WIDE SHUT but as usual with a Stanley Kubrick film, HOME ALONE will and Frank Capra's IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE will inevitably come up (if I had a nickel for every time that the Sticky Bandits were brought up in a FULL METAL JACKET discussion).

On this episode we are inspired not so much by the latest cinematic offerings in THOR: RAGNAROK and SUBURBICON but from a conversation on the great BAD FEMINIST FILM CLUB podcast about coming to terms with different filmmakers realigning characters in a franchise to their own individual creative sensibilities. And while this has been done with much success in the latest Marvel film which was shepherded by Taika Waititi, previous critical darling George Clooney has taken a beating with his attempt to put his fingerprints on a Coen Bros. script. For that we recommend an episode from WHO SHOT YA? on the idea that Clooney is perhaps too close of a collaborator with the Coens. As usual we come to no conclusions other than Andrew of AB FILM REVIEW wanting no more "unoffical" Coen work hitting the silver screen and Mike of PROJECTING FILM coming to terms with the fact that there's no way to praise Mr. Waititi's work without thinking that his name sounds silly (but pleasant).
Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: @markasplayedpod
Theme music by Josh Nolan

'til the Words Run Out from the album Fair City Lights

It's our very first episode and we are already feeling nostalgic for our past. To do so we take a look at the summer movie classic STAND BY ME, while crediting the INDOORSWOMEN PODCAST and PODSTALGIC for kicking off our conversation on the state of summer movie season in 2017 and where we hope it to be in the future. Along the way we debate the merits of the year's biggest critical and box office hit WONDER WOMAN, an 80s update to Stephen King's IT, and the decision to start with two of the grumpiest film podcasters as the inaugural hosts to this rotating panel show. But for now, it's Jairo from THE TRUE BROMANCE FILM PODCAST, Michael from PROJECTING FILM, and this is MARK AS PLAYED.

Facebook/Instagram/Twitter: @markasplayedpod

Theme music by Josh Nolan

'til the Words Run Out from the album Fair City Lights
