Director and screenwriter Joel Coen went brotherless for this film adaptation of the Scottish play that is nearly as bare-bones as one can get. We talk about the strong performances, the stark black-and-white cinematography, the sometimes surprising casting, David says "yeet" in a surprising context, and Nicole says some variation of "pared down" a lot (do not use it as a drinking game; you will die).

This round's Primeflix Roulette was an animated film from China that comes in two versions: the original, available on YouTube, and the culturally neutered Weinstein Company cut, available on Netflix. Two minor gods, thinking they're no longer needed by the human world, are asked for a little divine aid when a mother and daughter have to keep the family restaurant going. A brother god comes to help while the other takes more large-scale measures to feel needed, ones that could end in disaster. Will the restaurant stay afloat? Will the world end? Will someone please wake up Nicole Kidman? It's time for her lines.

In exchange for a degree to get himself ahead in life, Goreng volunteers for six months in the "Vertical Self-Management Center," a prison in which the residents are literally stacked on top of each other, with two inmates per floor and a vertical shaft where the food platform comes through for two minutes a day. Among many deep musings, David, Brett, and Nicole talked about the filmmaking, the less-than-subtle metaphors, the fascination with the dystopian prison genre, and whether it's possible for one person to fight an entrenched system. Movie-Go-Round Marathon Update

Today, we wanted to drop an update in the feed as to where the show has been and what you can expect from it in the future and over the next month. (Spoiler: Movie-Ghoul-Round will be back!) Here's a transcription of the update:

"Hello, everyone – Brett Stewart here. I wanted to drop an announcement in the feed to give everyone an update on what to expect over the next month from Movie-Go-Round.

Firstly: It’s been a tough year! The pandemic, stay-at-home orders, devastating wildfires, massive protests – riots – 2020’s been a real peach. For me, the pandemic hit like a ton of bricks and I had more work than ever before. That’s why I took a break from producing Movie-Go-Round to step back and regroup.

I’m really excited to let you all know that we’re now back and, at least I think, better than ever! Starting later today, you’ll be getting a huge influx of episodes in your feed. Think of it as a, “End of Summer, Beginning of Fall, Movie-Go-Round Marathon Special That Also Not-So-Secretly Doubles as a Way for Us to Release our Lengthy Backlog in Time for Movie-Ghoul-Round in the Final Weeks of October.” Very catchy.

You’ll notice some significant differences this time around. The editing style on the episodes is very different and leans more into the production end of things. I think folks will really enjoy that. On October 1, we’ll be wrapping all the episodes into the launch of a brand-new website that includes loads of new content, particularly video and live streaming. It’s a really pretty site, better than ever before, and well-worthy of a distinguished spot amongst your bookmarks.

Lastly, I do also want to apologize: This year got so hectic that as the producer, I dropped the ball on keeping the audience abreast of why we were MIA. Stepping back was a healthy change for the show: the new editing style is terrific and we were over-burdened by a hefty backlog. It’s my goal as a producer to avoid developing such a backlog again. Because, bear in mind, we want to be current come the third annual Movie-Ghoul-Round later next month!

Your patience during this time has been so appreciated. I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy, and we look forward to having you torture us for many more You Did This to Us movies. Be on the lookout for the first episode of the revamped Movie-Go-Round in your feed later today."

All of us basked in Herzog's hypnotic narration and his knack for finding the quirks in the cave researchers. But will this film be a classic? Check it out and weigh in!

In this Movie-Go-Round Future Classics, the team was offered the last opportunity to choose a movie from 2008. It was Nicole’s pick, but really, there was only one choice: The Dark Knight. Nicole, David, and Brett got so excited they went a little over the standard episode length and could’ve gone at least another hour. We talked about the influences on the movie, the influence the movie has had, the practical stunts, some actual criticisms of the film, the fateful casting of Heath Ledger and his step into legend, and a lot more.

In this movie, Byung-Soo grapples with the confusion of encroaching Alzheimer's, memories of his past as a Dexter-style serial murderer, and the threat of a newly emerged serial killer who's after Byung-soo's daughter. David, Brett, and Nicole had a good time dissecting this puzzle, discussing the symbolism of a bamboo grove, the anatomy of the human skull, and the crime-drama tropes this story fortunately avoids.

Featuring some of Tarantino’s signature elements (clever dialogue, loving shots of a woman’s feet, killer music choices) and deviating in equally significant ways (much less blood, a mature romantic element), "Jackie Brown" was only a modest success and one that a lot of fans have missed seeing. Join us as we dig into this low-profile Tarantino, and ask such questions as: Is this a modern blaxploitation movie? How are so many people getting shot in public with no one noticing? And WHAT is the deal with Samuel L. Jackson’s hair?

Aw, guys, why? Whyyyyyy? You Did This to Us. You made us watch "Paul Blart: Mall Cop." What did we do wrong? In this Happy Madison production (there’s the first clue this won’t go well), a schlubby single dad who takes his low-end security job too seriously gets caught up in a holiday season heist and has to find a way to save the day. Brett, David, and Nicole had to watch this alleged comedy and found themselves asking questions like, Does the predictable script make this endearing or unbearable? How does this movie manage to be aggressively bland? And does the universe gain anything from this movie existing?

#29 – RAW

Hoo, boy. This movie. For this week’s “Around the World,” Nicole chose the French-Belgian horror and coming-of-age film, "Raw" (“Grave” in the original French). David knew to brace himself, but poor Brett had no idea what he was in for. Young Justine arrives at veterinary college, where her sister Alexia is already a student. Alexia encourages Justine to awaken one of her appetites during a hazing ritual, and all the rest, unfortunately, follow suit. We tried not to bite off more than we could chew by keeping the discussion to such questions as, Why is the faculty so blasé about the hazing? What is it about college that makes people change? Is this the way normal siblings act? And is the freakiest part of this movie the horse, the hair, the highway, or the Brazilian wax?

#28 – The Grand Budapest Hotel

For Future Classics this week, David asked Nicole and Brett to watch "The Grand Budapest Hotel." This elaborately constructed, nested diorama of a film is populated with some of the best character actors working today, a couple of up-and-comers, and a few just past their leading-role prime. Lobby boy Zero Moustafa, a foreigner to the fictional country of Zubrowka, becomes the apprentice and friend of Gustave H., the fastidious, refined, yet startlingly profane concierge of the Grand Budapest. We dig into this confection with three spoons, chewing over the brilliance of Ralph Fiennes, the symmetry of the cinematography, and the accessibility to non-Wes Anderson fans.

#27 – The Gift

We spun the virtual wheel for “Netflix Roulette” and wound up with a movie we had trouble approaching: 2015’s "The Gift." What at first seems like a “creepy guy starts getting too close to the nice couple” thriller begins to take unexpected turns as the wife starts digging into the creepy guy’s past. The tone of the film is odd, and gets darker and more unsettling as it goes along. Join David, Brett, and Nicole as they ponder things like, Is this the most horrifying movie we’ve watched? How does Jason Bateman’s character get his influence? Does the punishment at the end fit the crime? And will we ever look at a monkey the same way again?

We took an admiring look at the film’s craftsmanship, and a harder look at its portrayal of the Hmong culture. Does this movie include the “white savior” trope? What if the protagonist is the one who makes the situation bad in the first place? Was it a good idea to use nonprofessional actors to play the Hmong roles? We dig in deep in this episode!

All of us agree on the visual merits of the movie, but do Brett and David share Nicole’s opinion of the content? Is there any substance underneath all the style? Why does Driver do what he does? Is there a purpose to the brutality of the violence in the film? Most importantly, where do we get one of those boss scorpion jackets?

There are some typical horror movie tropes, like poor decision-making and doing exactly what you’ve been told not to do, and some surprisingly inventive bits like a whacked-out suicide machine and the look of the demon. For this round of “You Did This to Us,” our audience made a pick that could be considered less cruel than usual, and chose “Gremlins 2.” Gizmo, a small furry monkey elf known as a “Mogwai,” is kidnapped and brought to the Clamp (Trump) building where his human friend Billy coincidentally works. Unfortunately, he accidentally gets wet, evil Mogwai are spawned and metamorphose into nasty Gremlins. Chaos ensues for the next 70 minutes or so. There is inexplicable fourth wall breaking and a musical number. We try to make any kind of sense of this movie. Come join us!

#16 – The Miracle of Morgan's Creek

We begin round four of our go-rounds with a New to Two pick from Nicole, “The Miracle of Morgan’s Creek.” This 1944 Preston Sturges classic was incredibly suggestive for its time, using a lot of coded language to refer to sex and pregnancy, both forbidden to speak of by the pre-MPAA Hays Code.

Daffy but pleasant Trudy Kockenlocker goes to a farewell party for American servicemen, imbibes a lot of spiked “lemonade,” and discovers the next morning that she is married; the biggest problem is that she can’t remember the groom’s name. The second-biggest problem is that it turns out she’s expecting. What did David and Brett think of our oldest (and possibly funniest) movie so far? How many euphemisms can be squeezed into one film? And how can Trudy find a way out of her situation without a lifelong scandal? It would take a miracle…

#14 – Bang Bang!

We journey into Bollywood in episode 14, “Bang Bang!” An Indian remake of “Knight and Day,” Nicole’s Around the World pick features a chase after the stolen Kohinoor diamond, multiple exotic locations, four musical numbers, some smooth and inventive dancing, a lovely ingénue, and a 12-pack you have to see to believe. The action tropes get turned up to 11, wind machines are always handy to blow hair artistically in the right direction, and everything that explodes blows up in slow motion. Why, in this movie that includes the dreams of at least four different people, does no one ever dream about any animals? Small-time Ukranian-born New Yorker and arms dealer Yuri Orlov takes advantage of the end of the Cold War and the sudden poor security of Russian arsenals to step up into the big leagues, occasionally dragging his now-addict brother Vitaly (Jared Leto, a potential contest winner for looking the least like Nicolas Cage) along for the ride.

Come join David, Nicole, and Brett as we dig into this movie that has very little empathy or development for any of its main characters, but does have a fairly awesome title sequence!

#11 – The Midnight Meat Train

This week is our “New to Two” theme, and Brett chose “The Midnight Meat Train.” This movie doesn’t just show gore, it revels in it, using inventive situations and playful camera work. Join us as we break down the story of photographer Leon, who becomes obsessed with following a nattily dressed subway serial killer.

We’ll ask such questions as, What are those awful little things on the killer’s chest? Why does Leon keep following the killer? Why does Leon’s girlfriend stay with him? And most important, have Leon and his girlfriend never realized that what they’re doing in that restaurant is really, really unsanitary?

#10 – The Boy in the Plastic Bubble

This (in)famous 1970s TV movie featured a young John Travolta as Tod, a teenager with immune deficiencies that forced him to live in plastic tents and positive-pressure rooms all his life, until he met this girl… Loosely based on a true story, this movie took a few liberties with science that are a little hard to swallow. For our next round of “You Did This to Us,” David, Brett, Nicole, and guest Dominic Cichocki dug into this bit of melodramatic cheese, taking a hard look at Robert “Mr. Brady” Reed’s acting style, the overdone music, and wondering why Tod would fall for this girl, who is mildly pretty, but also horrible. Also, what is Buzz Aldrin doing here?

#9 – Ip Man

Why did we cover 2008’s “Ip Man” for our second Around the World movie? Because Donnie Yen is THE Man, not just Ip Man. Known in the West primarily as Bruce Lee’s teacher, Ip Man had a fascinating life story that Donnie Yen portrays with a Zen-like calm and a smoldering strength. This movie covers the period of the Japanese occupation of Man’s city of Foshan, China, and a cinematically exaggerated fight he had with a Japanese general.

Join David, Brett, and Nicole as they dig into this film that includes constant breaking of precious household objects, food lust for a potato, and a ten-on-one fight with gnarly foley work that really makes you hear those limbs cracking.

#5 – Dunston Checks In

For our fifth and final theme, completing the first rotation of our little Movie-Go-Round, we have our audience pick. We hadn’t yet settled on “You Did This to Us” as the name of the theme, but after the first two picks we’ve seen, it seems like it’s heading in that direction… Anyhow, “Dunston Checks In” is a 1930s screwball comedy taking place in the 1980s – a tale of two brothers living in a fancy hotel with their single-dad hotel manager. Enter an amoral jewel thief who uses a trained orangutan (not a MONKEY, Brett!) as his larcenous proxy, and the hijinks really get underway. It’s terrible.

Join Brett, David, and Nicole as we dig into this movie’s rough charms, its record company’s parallels to the American recording industry, and whether the mostly amateur cast help or hurt the feel of the film.

#3 – Logan

For our first Future Classics week, Brett nominated 2017’s “Logan.” The year is 2029, and an aging Logan is trying to leave Wolverine behind as he makes money as a limo driver to support himself, Caliban, and an ancient Professor Xavier. Into this attempt at a quiet life drops a pre-teen girl being chased by bad guys, and the motley group hits the road in search of sanctuary. Brett, David, and Nicole discuss its classic potential, what the black-and-white “noir” version brings to it, and how completely awesome Dafne Keen is as the girl in question.

Next episode, Movie-Go-Round will travel abroad with its first Around the World selection. Please note that this episode and the original notes here stated the film was “The Host.” It will not be “The Host” due to a technical error, but rather, the Jamaican classic, “The Harder They Come.”

#2 – Sharknado

Our second week’s theme: Netflix Roulette! Each host used a randomizer to choose a movie from Netflix and we decided among the choices offered. This week’s “film” was a SyFy movie. About a tornado. Filled with sharks. Guest Claire Child joins Brett, David, and Nicole as we ponder the tough questions: Would explosives inside a tornado actually disperse it? How long could a person actually live inside a shark? And was Respectable Actor John Heard in this movie because someone was holding a loved one hostage in an undisclosed location?
