Introducing Muckspout Split #1 Muckspout Split #1: A Punk Rock Comic Anthology Featuring J Prozac – Funding Now On Kickstarter! FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Chicago, IL – October 28, 2025 – Get ready for sensory overload! Muckspout Split #1, a high-octane fusion of punk rock energy and visceral storytelling, is blasting onto the scene courtesy of Muckspout Punk Comics. This isn't just your average comic anthology; it's a raw, unapologetic explosion of creativity brought to you by Eric Cockrell, John MacLeod, and the legendary J Prozac. This 24-page dose of pure punk rock mayhem will also be accompanied by an EP of brand-new music from J Prozac, inspired by the stories within, creating a truly immersive experience. The Prozacs’ music has been a soundtrack to the underground for decades, and now, that same rebellious spirit fuels the narratives within these pages. J Prozac's creative input, alongside Cockrell and MacLeod, ensures a raw, authentic punk rock edge permeates every panel and note. Muckspout Split #1 is a triple shot of adrenaline, featuring: • Blister & Scorched Birth Meets The Prozacs: This isn't just a crossover; it's a collision of counter-culture icons! Eric Cockrell's Blister and Scorched Birth meet the one and only J Prozac in a story that's as wild and unpredictable as you'd expect. Witness the chaos as these forces of nature collide. • Feral Punk: Eric Cockrell introduces his explosive new creation, Feral Punk. This urban legend, raised by feral dogs, now fights for the downtrodden in the concrete jungle. Written and created by Eric Cockrell, with art by JT Molloy, this story marks the character's electrifying debut. Prepare for a dose of street-level justice with a punk rock twist. • The Stardust Projector: A monster-of-the-week adventure with a punk heroine! Nell, along with her dopey tech guy, Jimmy, investigates a strange musical artifact. Think: Warehouse 13 infused with the raw energy of an old-school slam pit! This is a deep dive into the weird and wonderful world of forgotten sounds. Written by John MacLeod, with art by Jason Miller and letters by Dave Lentz. • Diary of a Little Weirdo: A Poem by Daniel Aumiller. "We wanted to create something that truly captured the spirit of punk rock – raw, energetic, and unapologetically independent," says Eric Cockrell, “We poured the same energy and passion into these stories as J Prozac does into his music, so working with him has been a dream. Much love goes out to him and his bandmates for making this a reality. The comic and the soundtrack are two sides of the same coin – raw, loud, and in your face.” You aren't just backing a comic book; you're funding a multimedia punk rock experience! You are helping Muckspout Punk Comics print and distribute Muckspout Split #1, a raw, 24-page comic anthology that is a triple shot of creative energy. Featuring stories by Eric Cockrell, John MacLeod, and legendary punk icon J Prozac of The Prozacs, this book gives you three distinct, high-octane slices of punk-infused fiction: from the explosive debut of the urban legend Feral Punk to a classic crossover featuring J Prozac himself, and the Stardust Projector, a mysterious adventure in the style of a "Punk Rock Warehouse 13." More importantly, the creation of a brand-new, exclusive soundtrack by J Prozac of The Prozacs, created specifically to accompany the stories in the book. This Kickstarter is the only way to get this unique pairing of raw art and authentic punk rock music from the ground up, allowing us to keep this project fiercely independent and uncompromising. You are joining us to unleash a new era of creator-owned, music-driven storytelling.

Episode Notes

Eric and Ben discuss community building and how marketing fits with DIY culture with Jason Hebert of Rebel Force. Jason is from Sudbury, Ontario, a small town with a legendary reputation for punk rock and local music. They compare it to Seattle in the 90s, noting that it lacks media attention but is full of undiscovered gems. They also mention the Townhouse, a legendary venue for bands traveling through Sudbury. In general, the conversation is focused on punk culture, music, and DIY. The speaker got involved with the local punk rock scene when they were 14 years old. The speaker's first goal was to play one show and eventually they started meeting people and putting on shows. As they got more involved, they passed the torch on to the next generation. They don't remember exactly who passed the torch to them, but they remember the big names in the scene at the time that were organizing everything. The conversation is about two friends, Kevin Mason and the speaker, who used to organize punk rock shows in the late 90s and early 2000s in Sudbury. They would put up posters to advertise, using letters cut out from magazines since they didn't have a computer or printer. They also organized an annual event they called the Fuck School Show, which caused a lot of trouble with school administrators. The conversation also mentions a girl named Amy who was in the same room as the two friends for some of the shows. The conversation is about how to organize a show in a local scene. The speaker talks about how they used to coordinate shows in Sudbury before social media was a thing. They had a network of contacts and venues that they worked with to put together shows. They also mentioned how they did design, marketing and promotion for the shows. They also talk about how punk rock has a bit of a secret attitude towards it and the speaker mentions how guerrilla marketing and street teams were used to promote shows.

Episode Notes

Ben and Eric discuss corporate greed's affect on the arts and what can be done to correct it.

Ben started by sharing some good news – his band’s song had reached 25,000 streams on Spotify. Eric mentioned that it may have earned them about $0.20 and Ben decided to do some math to see how much that was. He calculated that 25,000 streams was equivalent to 800 streams per day for 30 days, which was the equivalent to almost two packed Lee’s Palace concerts in Toronto.
Then we moved onto the issue of not getting very much of the money from ticket sales anyhow. The conversation ended with a discussion about how ad revenue goes a long way and is a major source of income for many people. The talk highlighted the importance of understanding the complexities of the music industry and the potential for exploitation.

The record companies negotiated with Spotify in the early 2000s to get a cut of the profits and have privileged access to playlists. The record industry is compared to a cartel that controls the resource of music, and we discussed the recent Wizards of the Coast debacle and how the community responded to this, showing that they are not willing to put up with such restrictions.

The updated Wizards of the Coast (WotC) license for Dungeons and Dragons-related content had people up in arms about WotC tightening their license, which could have impacted many businesses that had been built up around D&D content. We also tackled the recent developments with YouTube’s monetization system, which has been used to silence independent media organizations under the guise of misinformation. Ben shared his experience with Napster and how it gave him access to music that he wouldn’t have had otherwise, which he believes led him to become a musician.

Episode Notes

Eric, Ben, and John sit down to talk ambient music and pushing content in the digital age with musician Billy Mays III.

John, Ben, Eric, and Billy Mays the Third discuss how Billy used to tour as a solo musician, but now streams on Twitch. Eric and Billy recall how they met in Chicago – Billy was there for a home and bath tradeshow.

The conversation began with a brief recounting of a coffee shop meeting between the two that took place around eight months after the passing of the Billy’ father. In February 2009, Billy had recently moved out of his father’s house and into his own apartment, was awoken in the middle of the night by a knock on his door and told to evacuate the building as it was on fire. Billy managed to escape unharmed, but the speaker lost all of his possessions, including his music, collections, and studio gear. Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.

In February 2009, Billy had a custom-made guitar that was priceless, but it was destroyed in a fire. Thanks to his father, the speaker was able to start over with a basic Fender Strat guitar and practice amp. This inspired them to write softer, emotionally-connected songs to process his shock and trauma. Later in 2009, his dad passed suddenly, leaving Billy unable to make music for three months. Eventually, the speaker was offered a free spot at a celebrity retreat and they used this opportunity to reconnect with.

He worked from August to November to make an album called Gently, which he considers to be the most unique thing he has ever made. He also spoke about how he sometimes retcons his music and updates the album art.

https://www.youtube.com/@muckspout

We talk with Josh Caterer of Smoking Popes about the concept of being a legendary artist, the longevity and evolution of being an artist. Josh talks about how the term ‘legendary’ is relative and only means that someone is talking about you, whether they are saying good or bad things.

He reflects on the level of success the band has achieved and how it means he is only recognized at their shows or in the genre they are part of. He reflects on the 90s when there was more of a buzz about the band and people would get weird around him.

Josh references “Punishers”, which refers to overzealous fans of a band. The term is used to describe fans who are so passionate about a band that they will monopolize their attention and won’t let them go. They will often get right in the band’s faces and enthusiastically tell them the life story of their relationship with the music. It can become even more intense if the fan has had a few drinks, as they will lose their filter.

We discussed the Smoking Pope and their reunion after 7 years. The speaker then talked about how age is strange, and how Mick Jagger is still active and putting out music at 79 years old. The conversation then shifted to Jawbreaker and how they were broken up for years and how it was exciting to see them come back together. Then the conversation shifted to Duvall, the Josh’s Christian band after the Smoking Popes, and whether or not there is a chance for a reunion or if any of the music will bleed into the speaker’s Josh Cater Trio project. The conversation ended with the speaker emphasizing that Duvall’s music is not gospel, but rather pop punk with Christian themes.
