By the time this episode hits this feed, you've probably already heard us talk about the SAG-AFTRA strike and their guidance for podcasters on our other shows, unless I suppose this is the only podcast of mine that you listen to.

Anyway, in order to stand in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA during their strike, we have decided that Stairwells as a movie podcast will go on hiatus. Em joined Niamh to talk a little about the union's guidance and answer some emergency non-movie emails we received from audience members.

At the time of this writing, Autumn and Niamh are still discussing exactly what we want to do in the interim, but we know that at the very least we will be back in two weeks for a general hangout episode to catch up after their absence. At that time, we will announce if we've decided on anything else to cover while we suspect movie coverage (like, for example, pivoting to manga or something).

"You know that pond you often go to? That area used to be a forest. Folks here called it the haunted forest. And so, well... dunno, maybe kids these days don't believe in haunted forests, but... I guess... Anyway, er... Oh, yeah. So I was in 6th grade... No, in 5th... about 5th grade. Right, where I took a shit outdoors for the very first time. For some reason, there were lots of wild chickens out there, maybe they flew the coop, dunno, but kinda having no money, I used to go there to find eggs, y'know? And on that day of my first outdoor shit, I didn't go to the bathroom all day. Even after school, I was wandering about, looking for a good spot. I ended up going to the forest, but still couldn't decide where to do it. It's surprising how much you struggle in spite of wanting to go for it, y'know? Anyway, I soon came across this egg. It was half-buried in the ground, like somebody had tried to hide it. It was weird, but somehow gave me the impetus. And I badly needed to go. So, I did it, right then and there. Because I'd kept it in for so long, it was quite a dump. I felt great afterwards, 'til I noticed how dark it had gotten. I suddenly felt scared and went home. But on the way back, I started thinking... What the hell was a huge egg like that doing there? And why did someone try to bury it? And on top of that, why did I have to shit on it? Normally I'd have brought it back home, a big egg like that... And thinking like that made me feel really miserable. But I let it pass for the day. After that I kept going back to look for it, but it just... disappeared. It's not like I wasn't familiar with the forest, y'know? But I couldn't find it. So I finally gave up looking. And that's when this guy showed up. A guy covered with tattoos, bleeding. He'd be watching me at every turn. It was freaky. He'd be there whenever I let my guard down. Like when I'd be cleaning up at school... raking the school yard... cleaning out the chicken coop... He also appeared when I was studying, right here in this room! And when I visited the shrine... Anyway, he'd show up, no... He'd just be there, watching me. Anyway he was all bloody, tattooed... And had shit on his head. Yeah. Shit, blood and tattoos..."

"Wait, does that have anything to do with you shitting in the haunted forest?"

"Dunno... probably not. Anyway, so this guy... Hey, it's a pretty good story, right?"

"Yeah, weird... but cool."

"So he's watching me, till one day, he suddenly disappears. I was recording podcasts. Going for hours all night, while he stared on. I'd sorta gotten used to him by then. So I thought what the heck and kept recording. Then, when I finally recorded a 50-minute podcast, he disappeared. Just like that..."

We are back! We took a week off because of various mental health and physical health crises, but all is well, everyone is on the mend and feeling better. And on the other side of it we bring you a slightly unusual episode: we had watched Boyz n the Hood like 3 days before when we were originally supposed to record, so the movie is not as fresh in our minds as we normally like it to be. But 1. we LOVED the movie and 2. we had a really good time recording this episode and I think it'll be a lot of fun to listen to

A giant meteor passed by our recording studio here on the Battleship Star Wars and landed on earth. It turns out the meteor contained an evil assassin, and he went and injected Ivy, the most talented and intelligent girl in the world, with some bad bacteria or something. We are ashamed to admit it, but all our good movie takes are actually beamed to us directly by Ivy, the smartest girl in the world. We just read them aloud verbatim from the CRT monitor she possessed to communicate with us, and then we pass her good takes off as our own. Anyway, since she’s infected right now, we weren’t able to say smart things into a mic for you, but we did record this instead. It also ended up having a guest. Enjoy!

Next week, Bipan and Budget Amuro will be done fighting off the infection, so we will be back to talk about Love Brewed in the African Pot (and also probably 2046, finally).

10. An Accidental Double Feature! Rebuilds of Evangelion (Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Jo & Ha) & Akira

This episode is a weird one. So we are back at last to talk about Akira, and we had a good time. But perhaps is the bulk of the episode is spent on something else entirely lol. Niamh and I watched the Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone and Evangelion 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance and had a lot of thoughts. If you're averse to spoilers about these two movies, we start talking about them in vague details at 11 minutes, we start really getting into spoiler territory at 21 minutes, and the discussion wraps up at 1 hour and 4 minutes. Sorry to surprise you with that if you're just here to talk about Akira. To be fair, much as we both love Akira, there isn't a ton to say beyond "that's one hell of a movie" haha.

Next time we will be continuing to explore the yakuza genre by watching one of the absolute classics, Tokyo Drifter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also, forewarning, there's a reasonable chance we dive into 3.0 and 3.0+1.0 there. i'm not going to make any promises because i haven't had time to watch movies this week, but it may happen.

This week, I joined Niamh in Chicago and we went to an actual movie theater to see I Carry You With Me! It attempts to blend documentary and narrative filmmaking in ambitious ways that we didn't necessarily love, but got a really good discussion out of it. Then we moved on to talk about our regularly scheduled movie night movie, Red Peony Gambler 3: The Hanafuda Match. Now that's one hell of a movie.

We felt it doesn't really measure up to the films he was making even a few years later, but still found a lot to dig into with this romantic drama that turns into... earnest pastiche of Soviet propaganda films? It takes an odd turn as you see Kurosawa learn how to make movies in real time.

Next time Autumn wanted to watch a gay cowboy movie, so we are going with the undefeated champion of the world, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid!

Hi! It's a new podcast on the network! Nia and I like hanging out and watching movies together and we decided we'd hit record after we finished the movie. It's a very unique format, I know. For this first episode, we decided to be very true to ourselves and watch an 80s movie about two women drinking each other's blood. Also David Bowie is there for a bit. It's The Hunger!

Next time we will be watching Akira Kurosawa's 1946 film No Regrets For Our Youth so look forward to that!
