On January 7th, 2024, a voice fell silent. Kelly Mays, a Detroit native known for her fiery spirit & unwavering dedication to mental health advocacy, domestic violence support, arts, & culture was tragically murdered. Her vibrant legacy, however, remains a resounding whisper against the shadows of stigma & suffering.

Kelly, or "Native Child" wasn't just a champion; she was a warrior. She battled the invisible claws of mental illness with words woven into spells of strength & hope through her powerful poetry & mentorship.

Recent reports have emerged, suggesting that Kelly, a fierce advocate for mental health & victims of domestic violence, was herself a victim of the very affliction she ardently fought against.

The details surrounding her passing cast a chilling fog. Allegations point to her estranged husband Jimmy Brown, known by the Detroit Hip Hop community as Supa Emcee. As the legal wheels turn, whispers of truth begin to emerge, each detail adding another layer of grief to the tapestry of loss.

Supa was not just a prominent figure in the Detroit & Highland Park Hip Hop scenes, publicly he was a force for good within the community. His positive contributions and impact are undeniable. However, Supa's life took a turn when he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car crash in October 2020. This tragedy challenges our perceptions & forces us to grapple with the duality of human nature.

What is Cop City? Atlanta Police Foundation is trying to build the largest police training facility in the US in Weelaunee Forest, a watershed surrounded by primarily Black residents who overwhelmingly oppose the project.

The plans include military-grade training facilities, a mock city to practice urban warfare, dozens of shooting ranges, and a Black Hawk helicopter landing pad.

Interview: Singer, Storyteller, Writer, Dancer, Percussionist, Lyricist, & co-Founder of the women’s oral history vocal group “Hakamma”, Jarah Michelle McKinney is an Archivist & Librarian working as Education Program Producer at The Charles H Wright Museum & is also the new Executive Director at Detroit Sound Conservancy (DSC): A nonprofit community-based archive documenting Detroit music through preservation, education, performance, & place keeping.

DSC will preserve the musical recordings of Harold W. McKinney (1928-2001).

The collection contains numerous audio & cassette tapes documenting the music of “The Baron” from the 1960s to his death in 2001. DSC plans to inventory, digitize, & make accessible the recordings at their soon-to-be-open-to-the-public museum, library, & archive in the heart of the West Side neighborhood where McKinney grew up & later, raised his family. Preserving McKinney’s recorded legacy is part of a larger effort to document Detroit’s rich sonic legacies beyond Motown. 

These recordings include broadcasts, live events, studio recordings, evaluation dubs, a metal ‘mother’ for disc album production, concerts, lecture-demonstrations, studio & home rehearsals of various groups of players/singers of original compositions, lyrics, & original lyrics set to cover material, home recordings of archival personal family moments & recorded conversations about the history of the musical development of African American music. 

Some of the studio recordings at risk have been released for the mass market as long-playing 33 rpm & 45 rpm discs and CDs now out-of-print.
