In Episode 89, Josh is rejoined by Maureen for the final episode of “The Popped Cast” (for now). Due to the impending arrival of Baby #2, we are taking a break from podcasting. We aren’t sure when we will be back but until then, enjoy this episode.

In the Premiere Topic, we dive into the hit NBC show “Parks and Recreation,” which ended its run in 2015 but came back just last week for a brand new episode to benefit the charity Feeding America. We talk about our thoughts on the special, the show overall, the MVP and LVP and whether or not we’d recommend it to someone who hasn’t seen it before.

PLUS, in our Teasers, Maureen recommends a new Amazon Prime Original and Josh recommends a band AND a 10-part docuseries on Michael Jordan.

Second, we give an update on our quest to find a new TV show with a review of the first three episodes of “The Good Wife.” In the Snack Bag, we cover CEOs giving up their 2020 salaries and “American Idol’s” plan to finish out their current season with the contestants competing from home.

In the Premiere Topic, we examine the legacy of ABC’s long-running sitcom “Modern Family,” which came to an end after 11 seasons last Wednesday. We talk about our history with the show, our MVP and LVP(s) and give our recommendation for whether or not you should check it out now that it’s wrapped up.

In Episode 85, we kick things off talking about a short film we made together while stuck in self-isolation (link below!). Then we discuss what the heck a “Quibi” is (it’s a unique spin on a streaming service for your phone) and whether or not yet another streaming service will last.

In the Premiere Topic, we take a “New York Times” article from 2019 that details the best dramas since “The Sopranos” and debate the merits of the ones we haven’t based solely on a single, short description from Wikipedia. After going through the 9 of the 20 on the list neither of us have seen, we pick a new one to watch in the next week (we will report back with our thoughts!).

PLUS, in our teasers, Josh gives both! One is a video of a fun reunion from a famous Broadway cast and the other is an easily digestible Netflix true crime documentary.

In the Premiere Topic, we do a deep dive into the 2017 film “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!” from filmmaker Morgan Spurlock. We discuss the uncomfortable revelations surrounding the star/director of the film, our thoughts on the film itself and whether or not the content presented made us think twice about the food we consume.

In Episode 81, we kick things off with a jam-packed Snack Bag. We discuss everything from the viral London subway singer to the production halt on the “Lizzie McGuire” reboot to the new (but actually old) “Bachelorette” to the passing of James Lipton.

In the Premiere Topic, we are diving deep into our second edition of “Wheel of Disney Originals” (AKA WODO) with the 2000 film “Quints.” We talk about our impressions of the movie, its nonsensical plot device that is way overused, some of the ridiculous plot lines and of course, rate it on our special Disney scale.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a fun whodunnit film and Josh recommends some new music.

In Episode 80, we give some more details about the decline in viewership for award shows. In the Snack Bag, we talk about the BIG (totally dumb) “Friends” reunion special on the horizon for the upcoming HBO Max streaming service.

In the Premiere Topic, we are bringing you another installment of our semi-regular series within The Popped Cast called “First Time.” Our third installment in the series is Josh’s first viewing of the film, “Downton Abbey.” It’s actually Maureen’s first time seeing the film as well but she was extremely familiar with the source material of “Downton Abbey” the TV show before we watched the movie. In this Premiere Topic, we hear Josh’s “First Time Take,” give our most and least valuable player (MVP & LVP) picks and tell you whether or not you should watch the movie.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a new NBC comedy and Josh recommends an Oscar-winning film from this past year.

In Episode 79, we are back to our regularly scheduled programming after breaking down the Oscars last week. In the Snack Bag, we discuss the down ratings for the Oscars and the return of Gordon Bombay to the ice.

In the Premiere Topic, we continue our mini-series on “The Popped Cast” that we do from time to time called “Pilot Review.” Always on the hunt for a new show to watch together, we watched a pilot for a show we’ve never seen and decide whether or not it’s worth the time to continue watching. After trying "Cheers" last time, the Showtime hit “Episodes” is up next. We discuss our thoughts on the pilot, the good, the bad and whether or not we will keep watching. (You can currently watch “Episodes” on Netflix.)

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a Netflix documentary/reality TV series and Josh recommends season 40 of a CBS stalwart.

In Episode 66, Josh and Maureen open the episode, yet again, with another saltine update. Then, we discuss a Snack Bag topic so serious, it’s the only one on the docket this week.

In the Premiere Topic, we are kicking off a new mini-series on “The Popped Cast” that we will do from time to time called “Pilot Review.” Always on the hunt for a new show to watch together, we will watch a pilot for a classic show we’ve never seen and decide whether or not it’s worth the time to continue watching. First up, the NBC 80s juggernaut “Cheers.” We discuss our thoughts on the pilot, the good, the bad and whether or not the show holds up today. (You can currently watch “Cheers” on Netflix.)

In Episode 61, we talk about a bad hire for SNL (another racist white guy who gets a shot - sigh), Zooey Deschanel’s new boo, the passing of “Take Me Home Tonight” singer Eddie Money and a heartwarming story out of Florida (that’s only partly pop culture BUT THIS IS OUR PODCAST AND WE DO WHAT WE WANT).

In the Premiere Topic, we revisit the pilot of the hit ABC show “LOST” and discuss how well it holds up 15 years later, the good and the bad in the two-part episode and whether we would recommend it to someone who’s never seen it.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a new movie starring Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson and Josh recommends a powerful short documentary that first aired on ESPN.

In the Snack Bag, we talk about “Old Town Road’s” dominance on the “Billboard” Hot 100 (can anything dethrone it?) and the fact that “The Office” is leaving Netflix at the end of 2020.

In the Premiere Topic, we are talking all about Netflix original films - the good, the bad, the positive and the negative.

PLUS, in our teasers, Josh recommends a YouTube series from “Vox” and Maureen suggests a Netflix original series on the food industry in America.

In Episode 51, we are kicking off Season 2 with a fun episode! In the Snack Bag, we talk about a "Hunger Games" prequel, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepherd’s children discovering their parents are famous and the forthcoming big screen adaptation of the cult hit musical "tick...tick...BOOM!" directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and possibly starring Andrew Garfield (can he sing?!).

In the Premiere Topic, we re-watch and revisit the original Pixar film "Toy Story," 24 years after its release, in advance of "Toy Story 4" hitting theaters on June 21, 2019. We talk about whether or not the movie holds up, what surprised us most about the film and our favorite characters (not named Woody or Buzz).

PLUS, in our teasers, Josh recommends an excellent HBO mini-series and Maureen recommends a charming and moving film starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne.

In Episode 50, we have officially reached our one year anniversary of recording and releasing The Popped Cast! We reflect on a year of podcasting and discuss changes to our upcoming schedule. Then we dive into the Snack Bag where we talk about Gwyneth Paltrow forgetting she was in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and talk about the just released "Frozen 2" trailer (and whether or not anyone cares that a sequel is coming this fall).

In the Marquee Topic, we discuss the 2019 Tony Awards. We dive into our overall impression of the show, how James Corden did as the host, our favorite performances and what CBS is going to do about the sinking ratings for the broadcast.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a short book she loved and Josh reads a delightful short story that originated on Twitter.

In Episode 49, we discuss the end of iTunes as we know it (RIP!) and talk about James Holzhauer’s amazing run on "Jeopardy" finally coming to an end (don’t feel too badly - he’s walking away more than $2 million richer).

In the Marquee Topic, we are crowning a song of the summer for 2019! We examine six songs and take them through a mini bracket to determine what we think will be the earworm from summer 2019 that we remember for years to come. The contenders include “Boy with Luv” by BTS ft. Halsey, “Juice” by Lizzo, “bad guy” by Billie Eilish, “I Don’t Care” by Ed Sheeran ft. Justin Bieber, “Old Town Road (Remix)” by Lil Nas X ft. Billy Ray Cyrus and “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers.

Josh gives an update on how his "American Idol" prediction turned out and Maureen breaks down the ridiculousness of the current season of "The Bachelorette." Then, we chat about Ariana Grande’s new wax figure that doesn’t really look like her (and the general creepiness of wax figures) and discuss Adam Levine stepping away from "The Voice."

In the Marquee Topic, we are examining how public backlash to TV shows and movies affects perception of those TV shows and movies and whether or not visceral public reaction is a good or bad thing for pop culture (spoiler: it’s complicated).

PLUS, in our teasers, Josh recommends an audition from this season of "America’s Got Talent" and Maureen suggests a podcast with bite-sized episodes on time management.

In Episode 47, we follow-up on giving "Saturday Night Live"a second chance (spoiler: it did not go well for the NBC sketch show), give our NON-SPOILER reviews of the finale of "Game of Thrones," discuss just how weird it is that New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has never eaten a strawberry and share our excitement that Ellen DeGeneres’ talk show was renewed for three more years.

In the Marquee Topic, we are looking back at The Backstreet Boys’ 1999 album "Millenium" and consider whether or not that album (along with the albums of other pop stars and boy bands of the time) brought about the rise of Napster and illegal downloads and the subsequent downfall of the music industry. Was there causation? Correlation? No relation? We get into a heated discussion to find out!

In the Marquee Topic, we look into the state of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” one of the longest running programs on TV. We talk about whether or not the show is still funny, what they could do to improve it, the current standout performers and if the host of the show makes any difference from week to week.

In Episode 43, we talk about a truly impressive (and ongoing) streak happening on "Jeopardy"($1.2 million and counting for contestant James Holzhauer), "People" magazine naming Jennifer Garner as its cover star for its “Beautiful People” issue, the casting of Rami Malek as the next Bond villain and our predictions for how much "Avengers: Endgame" will make in its opening weekend.

In the Marquee Topic, we do a deep dive into the Beyoncé Netflix documentary "Homecoming." We talk about how we liked but didn’t love the film itself (a mix of a concert film and a cinema verite documentary) but really felt strongly about the importance of its message, discuss the two major themes presented in the film (representation for minorities and motherhood/womanhood) and heap our praise onto Queen Bey.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen recommends a different Netflix documentary and Josh recommends a Netflix original show that will help you stay up to speed on politics and happenings around the world.

In Episode 42, Maureen is back for a full episode! We discuss the "Grease" prequel in the works (NO THANKS), a fun throwback video to the set of "The Office" made by Jenna Fischer (Pam) herself and talk through an oral history of one of the most bizarre minutes in film history (especially when taken out of context) - a hilariously strange and gruesome moment from "Meet Joe Black."

In the Marquee Topic, we examine the "Time"100: Most Influential People, 2019. We talk through surprises on the list (especially a few from the “Artist” category), who from the list personally influences us and whether or not the people represented are positive or negative influences in our culture.

In Episode 41, Maureen returns from her two-week hiatus and gives her thoughts on everything we discussed on the podcast in her absence. We also give our reactions to the new full-length trailer for the upcoming live action remake of "The Lion King" and share just-released casting news for the 2020 film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical, "In the Heights."

In the Marquee Topic, Josh is joined by special guest, friend and pop culture connoisseur, Mike Wilbur to break down the epic fantasy series "Game of Thrones" (WARNING: minor spoilers ahead). In our deep dive to prepare for the April 14 premiere of the final season, we talk about our overall impression of the show, our favorite scenes and characters and whether or not the show has more to say outside of being one of the most entertaining shows on television.

PLUS, in our Teasers, Maureen gives both a regular teaser and an UN-teaser (something you should avoid) and Josh gives a suggestion for a cover of a song from "A Star Is Born."

Overall enjoyment of the film. 2. Overall quality of the film. 3. Baseball accuracy. We then averaged everyone’s score to get a total for each movie out of a possible 30 points. The film with the lowest score would be #15 and the film with the highest score would be #1.

The results might surprise you - the top 5 were separated by just 3 and a half points.

Email us at thepoppedcast@vernacularpodcast.com!
--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thepoppedcast/support

In the Marquee Topic, we’re kicking off a new mini-series called “Critically Panned,” where we examine one movie that was ravaged by critics but we think you should still check out. Female filmmaking teams! "Spider-Man!" - and disappointments - Olivia Colman and "Green Book" for Best Picture) and break down THAT performance from Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.

In Episode 35, we have a special Snack Bag where we are talking all things Oscars ahead of the February 24th Academy Awards. We talk about the Academy’s reversal of a previous announcement to cut four categories from the telecast, our personal rankings of the Best Picture nominees and our predictions in the major categories (here’s to being very, very wrong and Bradley Cooper winning Best Actor!).

In the Marquee Topic, we discuss each of the four versions of the film "A Star Is Born" (one from 1937, one from 1954, one from 1976 and one from 2018) after spending the last two weeks watching them. We give our thoughts on the general story (which is essentially the same in all four versions), tell you which of the versions you should actually watch (hint: it’s only two of them), examine the difficult ending, debate whether or not this will keep getting remade in the future and cast the late 90s version of the film we never got (20 years after the 1976 version and 20 years before the 2018 version).

PLUS, in our teasers, Josh recommends another Academy Award nominated documentary that touches on fatherhood, domestic violence and race in the midwest and Maureen suggests a fun and entertaining podcast from NPR.

In Episode 34, we talk about Kanye West’s (strange) gift to his wife on Valentine’s Day, the Oscars’ decision to cut four categories from the upcoming February 24 telecast, the trailer for a summer movie from director Danny Boyle that has one of the best premises for a film we’ve ever heard and our thoughts on the (long but somewhat interesting and entertaining) 2019 GRAMMYS.

In the Marquee Topic, we do a deep dive into dueling documentaries from Hulu and Netflix that chronicle the disastrous 2017 Fyre Festival. We discuss which of the films we liked more, the festival itself, the social media influencer culture that we live in now and who is ultimately to blame for the calamitous weekend in the Bahamas in April of 2017.

PLUS, in our teasers, Maureen suggests a throwback album and Josh recommends an Academy Award nominated documentary that you should definitely see on the big screen if you can.

In Episode 33, we talk about the Academy’s first choice to host the Oscars this year (hint: “can you smell what The Rock is cooking?!”), Jennifer Lawrence’s engagement and the ABC juggernaut “Modern Family” coming to an end after next year’s 11th season.

In the Marquee Topic, we talk about everyone’s favorite part of the Super Bowl - the commercials. We give our take on what makes a great Super Bowl commercial, our favorites from this year and why the top rated commercial from the entire night (according to “USA Today’s” Ad Meter) was actually Josh’s least favorite. We also give our thoughts on that (dreadful) halftime show by Maroon 5.

In Episode 32, we talk about a very sad crime committed against actor Jussie Smollett, Ariana Grande’s tattoo snafu (and the fix she made that actually made it worse!) and get into the ramifications of the winners from last weekend’s SAG Awards (all aboard the Glenn Close hype train!).

In the Marquee Topic, we break down the latest live musical to hit the small screen: "Rent." We talk about our personal history with the Tony and Pulitzer Prize winning musical by Jonathan Larson, discuss the good and bad of the Fox production (some good, a lot of bad) and contemplate whether it is totally fair to judge this “live” production after most of what aired was actually the dress rehearsal from the night before.

In the Marquee Topic, we break down the 2019 Oscar Nominations and wax poetic about pleasant surprises (Sam Elliot! “Black Panther!”), the most egregious snubs (no Bradley Cooper for Best Director?!?!) and our first impressions on which of the eight nominees will take home the prize for Best Picture.

In Episode 26, we welcome guests Zac and Sally Crippen, the founders of the Vernacular Podcast Network, for a very special episode where the four of us rank a selection of 11 Christmas movies from worst to best.

Two of the films chosen for our list were automatically added due to their classic nature ("It’s A Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas"). Then, to round out the list, each of us chose two films to add. Maureen chose "Love Actually" and "Elf," Zac chose "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (the 2000 live action version) and "The Holiday," Sally chose "You’ve Got Mail" and "Miracle on 34th Street" (the 1994 version) and Josh chose "Home Alone" and "The Santa Clause." Since there were so many others we didn’t pick (hey we all have kids and fulltime jobs), we opened up the list for one wild card. Of the wild card options ("Die Hard," "A Christmas Story," "TheMuppet Christmas Carol" and "Christmas Vacation"), "A Christmas Story" won out in a blind vote amongst the four of us. Animated classics like "The Grinch," "Rudolph" and "Frosty" were not eligible since they are too hard to compare to feature length films.

Once the films were chosen, we individually ranked each film on a scale of 1-10 in three categories. 1. Overall enjoyment of the film. 2. Overall quality of the film. 3. Christmas spirit. We then averaged everyone’s score to get a total out of 30. The film with the lowest score would be #11 and the film with the highest score would be #1. In the event of a tie (and there WAS a tie), the film with the highest average Christmas Spirit score would prevail.

The results might surprise you!

In Episode 25, we talk about the news that "Friends" would be leaving Netflix (and then the complete 180 just hours later that it would actually remain on the streaming service through 2019!), a debate on fashion standards between male and female musicians sparked by Beyonce and Ed Sheeran, Priyanka Chopra’s 75-foot wedding veil and the “Baby Shark” toy that (we are secretly so happy) is already sold out.

In our Marquee Topic, we chat about Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh being named the hosts for the 76th Annual Golden Globes and give our first impressions on the film and television nominations that were just announced on December 6.

PLUS, in our Teasers this week, Josh recommends new music from one of his favorite bands and Maureen suggests a fun card game.

In Episode 24, we give our reactions to the first trailer for next summer’s live-action, sure to be blockbuster film, “The Lion King,” talk about a clothing line from Joanna Gaines (of “Fixer Upper” fame) and discuss the unofficial beginning of awards season by breaking down some of the winners from the New York Film Critics Circle awards that were handed out on November 29.

In our Marquee Topic, we do a deep dive into the Amazon original series, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” ahead of its second season debuting December 5, 2018.

In Episode 21, we talk about Rami Malek’s extremely awkward fan interaction, the Justin Bieber burrito prank seen around the world and some big casting news for the forthcoming Game of Thrones prequel.

In our Marquee Topic, we discuss the juggernaut musical Wicked, which is celebrating its 15th anniversary on Broadway after debuting on the Great White Way in 2003. We share our experiences with the show and Josh gives his very heated thoughts on why he thinks the show was robbed at the 2004 Tony Awards (talk about holding a grudge!). We also chat about the NBC special A Very Wicked Halloween, hosted by the original leads of the musical (Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth), that aired earlier this week and rank the seven songs sung during the special. Spoiler: the original stars were not as entertaining as we’d hoped they would be and pop superstar Ariana Grande surprised us in a good way.

In Episode 20, we have a special guest for our Marquee Topic - Tiara Guy, a friend, colleague and movie super fan. But first, Maureen and Josh talk about David Schwimmer possibly being a thief (not really but we talk about a story where his doppelganger was caught stealing beer in England as well as Schwimmer’s direct response to the uncanny similarity), the fact that “NOW That’s What I Call Music!” still exists today in the age of streaming, the Enya song “Orinoco Flow” as it celebrates 30 years since its release and what’s leaving Netflix starting November 1 (dino fans, listen up!).

In our Marquee Topic, Tiara and Josh talk about the “Halloween” franchise in the wake of the most recent film’s release just last weekend and it’s incredible box office performance. Since Josh and Maureen are scaredy cats and can’t handle horror films, Tiara joined us to fill you in on what you need to know about the new “Halloween,” Michael Myers (and where he ranks in the pantheon of horror villains) and a brief discussion of scary movies as a whole. WARNING: spoilers ahead!

PLUS, in our Teasers this week, Maureen and Josh each recommend movies you should definitely make an effort to see in theaters if you can.

In Episode 17, we kick things off discussing two stories with a Broadway twist coming soon on TV and the silver screen. Witches and singing and Spielberg, oh my! We also touch on the K-pop phenomenon and discuss how today's boy bands are 1) still a thing (?!) and 2) huge influences because of social media.

Our Marquee Topic may be a throwback to some, but it's solid gold to us. This week, we do a deep dive on Survivor, which premiered in 2000 and is still going strong (with high ratings and a creative hot streak) having kicked off its 37th (!) season two weeks ago. If you're a fan, you'll love this. And if you're not, we’ll give you some compelling reasons why you should be.

PLUS, the real hit of the show this week is Josh's Teaser which is so good we won’t even give any spoilers. Let's just say, it's the perfect example of how pop culture can have a physical effect on your life. And surprise, surprise, Maureen watched a movie and cried... again.

In Episode 16, we chat about how too many Hot Cheetos can apparently land you in the hospital (and subsequently, which shape Cheeto is the best Cheeto), Alex Trebek’s beard and Jeopardy celebrating their 35th season with a (team!) All-Star tournament.

For our Marquee Topic, we look at seven trailers for new TV shows premiering this fall on network television and give our thoughts on which ones we might check out and which ones are going to be a hard pass (spoiler: Maureen and I don’t agree on a single one).

In Episode 13, we chat about the change (of a previous change) to the Oscars, the newly named star of the upcoming 23rd season of The Bachelor, our reactions to the Geoffrey Owens story, Younger drama, Burt Reynolds passing away (and the INCREDIBLE roles he turned down in his career) and Anna Kendrick's lie to get out of hanging out with friends on her birthday (could she be any more relatable?) For our Marquee Topic, we are podcasting this week about podcasts (how meta). We give a little history on the medium, some fun stats, the effect of podcasts on pop culture since they began as "audio blogs" in 2003 and some of our favorite shows to listen to that you might like as well. PLUS, in our teasers this week, Josh recommends an excellent biography on one of the greatest athletes of all time and Maureen suggests checking out what your local library might have to offer beyond books.
In Episode 12, we chat about Josh’s recent re-watch of 2016’s La La Land, The Conners’ decision to kill off the Roseanne character, the charming Netflix film To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before and the death of Neil Simon, one of America’s greatest playwrights. For our Marquee Topic, we look at the trailers for seven films being released this fall (including Bradley Cooper’s A Star is Born and the Ryan Gosling led First Man) and discuss which ones could be a part of the awards conversation this year (super sorry for the shade, Lin-Manuel Miranda).
In Episode 11, we chat about the ridiculous premise for a new Liam Neeson movie (snowplows! small Colorado ski town! drug cartels!), Meryl Streep's penthouse NYC apartment (and whether NYC is the dirtiest city in America), a potential Veronica Mars revival at Hulu and Danny Boyle leaving James Bond 25 (and also why a certain someone could help reinvigorate the franchise - or not - but also YES).
