Episode Summary

Welcome to the premiere of Regarding Steinbeck, the flagship podcast from The Steinbeck Experience. In our debut broadcast, we kick off After Eden—a seven-part companion miniseries breaking down Zoe Kazan’s Netflix/A24 adaptation of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. Steinbeck’s work continues to challenge and inspire new generations, but translating a sweeping generational epic to streaming television requires bold creative risks. We begin by examining what it truly means to adapt a sacred mid-century text for modern audiences.

Host John Holland is joined by rising literary scholars Libby Garnett (Notre Dame) and Ella Feist (UC Berkeley) for a full-spoiler analysis of Episode 1, "Brothers." Together, they unpack Kazan’s daring choice to open with Kathy Ames clawing through the mud instead of the Salinas mountains, placing Steinbeck's authorial narration directly into her mouth. The panel explores the Cain-and-Abel dynamic between Adam and Charles, Tracy Letts’s commanding turn as Cyrus Trask, the domesticity of burnt bacon, and the critical scenes left behind.
