We’re continuing our RIPE 78 interview series: while at the event we sat down with Matthijs Mekking, a software engineer from ISC, to talk about the new version of BIND. BIND is a fundamental piece of software for anyone working with DNS, and the de-facto standard on Unix-like systems. Keeping up with its new features and being aware where its development is heading is valuable for experts looking to predict the future of DNS and networking.

As always, the interview was conducted by our RIPE reporter, DNS expert Carsten Strotmann. RIPE was a busy event, as evidenced by the noise and conversations in the background; and we’re thankful for both Matthijs and Carsten to make time for the interview.

Learn more about Kea: https://www.isc.org/kea/

New BIND versions and the emergence of Kea represent lots of good news for DNS — we were especially pleased to hear about the support for more intuitive DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS, as well as DNSSEC. Adoption of these security and privacy focused technologies has been slow.

Speaking of slow adoption: in the next episode we’re bringing you an interview with Benedikt Stockebrandt, whome we asked about IPv6 deployment roadblocks and state of adoption in 2019.

The Women In Tech panel at RIPE 78 was a resounding success and it’s been growing steadily for years.

After the panel we caught Amanda Gowland, Senior Communications Officer and Change Officer of RIPE NCC and organizer of the panel, and Paula Gould, Men & Mice’s Head of Brand and Communications, for a quick evaluation of the panel, the challenges conquered and those that still lie ahead.

Diversity is an important issue, not just in technology but all over. As Amanda pointed out: diversity is a strength and an asset; and as Paula observed, progress often comes with pushback.

Past, present, and future DNS with Geoff Huston

We almost started distributing hosts.txt files on CDs...

DNS, with it’s decades of history, is still a field where debate and innovation exists. There are no hard truths in DNS, or only a few. Back in the day, nobody could’ve predicted the scope and implications of the technology being developed. We’ve come a long, long way.

But no matter how much has changed in DNS, nothing’s really different in DNS today. Debate still exists. Questions are aplenty.
