Stanton and Cody cut to the heart of the latest in the world. In this episode, we review how Supreme Court justices are nominated given Stephen Breyers' conditional retirement. We lament once more that Congress is spending money without real debate, regardless of party. And we question why the United States didn't boycott the genocidal regime of China as it hosted the Winter Olympics.

Self-Evident and Forgotten is a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions. We explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

Alas, we're missing our vital chairwoman, because she's as busy as the last few weeks have been. It's been a rather wild time since we last saw each other. The United States fully pulled out of Afghanistan with tragic losses, the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks has passed, President Biden has begun to implement firmer vaccination mandates, it appears the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff had active plans to prevent President Donald Trump from executing his constitutional powers, and Texas is being Texas. Just a normal workday, though, right?

<itunes:subtitle>A $1 trillion dollar spending bill, on anything, should raise the alarms for anyone with a shred of fiscal awareness. But what about a spending bill on infrastructure is dangerous to liberty?</itunes:subtitle>

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

A couple of weeks ago, the United States Senate passed a $1 trillion dollar infrastructure bill, the largest in over a decade. It's the byproduct of bipartisan compromise, with President Biden and Senate Democrats sacrificing grander plans and Republicans acquiescing to some greener projects. But we here at SEF have a critical question: does such a spending plan fit the often-forgotten ideas that made our country spectacular?

Here's a link to the Freakonomics episode on infrastructure. Worth a listen for a detailed look on how progressives and conservatives see the issue differently.

Last time, we started a discussion on foreign policy, setting out our individual principles for foreign policy. We began to see the differences and the disagreements that started to sprout up. Today, we're going to use an historically backed hypothetical scenario to test our principles and ask -- what would we do in those situations?

With the United States withdrawing from Afghanistan after two decades, many people wonder: what's next for America and her foreign policy? Well, what exactly is foreign policy? It's the collection of goals, plans, and actions by a national government in dealing with governments, companies, groups, and individuals from other nations. Sometimes, if you know what you're doing, you're able to direct those policies toward a general objective. What those objectives are can be the difference between sanctions and trade, war and peace. Today, we're going to explore how different kinds of freedom lovers think on foreign policy.

Recently, the Chairman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff (the military council that advises the president) General Mark A. Milley has come under heat for his remarks before a Congressional panel. The subject of his current disagreement with Republicans his defending policies in the military that purportedly teach our armed service men and women "woke" ideas that Republicans think undermine our military preparedness. The debate is confused, but reveals a wider problem -- ideological bureaucrats.

Welcome to Self-Evident and Forgotten, a podcast on the truths of liberty and odd opinions! Hosted by Stanton, Kristi, and Cody, we explore the beautiful ideas often forgotten today that have given life to a free, peaceful, and prosperous society.

We're missing Kristi again! So, Cody and Stanton yuck it up over something rather...yucky. As we and others across the state and country come together in person, more and more businesses are opening, schools are hopefully going back to in-person learning in the fall…it feels like things are getting back to normal. But, there's a growing threat now that people are back into the regular economic drive, a consequence born from misguided government policy. Welcome to the terrible, no-good world of inflation. It's insidious, it's powerful, and its threat to a free society is almost entirely unknown to most Americans.

Here's the link to Kristi's article: https://www.google.com/amp/s/thehill.com/opinion/white-house/557037-bidens-massive-budget-proposal-leaves-the-nation-fiscally-vulnerable%3famp

And forgive Stanton's echo-like sound. He's just moved into a new office and is still playing with the quality.

Liberty lovers alike, share common values: a principle of limited government, a belief in the fundamental equal dignity and rights of all people, and an enduring sense that freedom is not only an effective foundation for society, but a moral one….HOWEVER, there are times when we can have serious disagreements with real impact on not only policy, but the movement for freedom itself. Today, we conclude with our final installment of our Great Debate series. We've done immigration, intellectual property, and Big Tech. Today, we tackle the very tricky subject of children. Namely: do parents own their children?

The world decries capitalism for the evil of monopolies -- those greedy profiteers who would sap the people of their wealth by being the only ones who produce a good or service. But most people fail to realize that so called "natural monopolies" are impossible. The only monopoly you see today aren't from the free market, but from the government. In fact, the longest running, best protected, and most common monopoly are government public utilities, the providers of some of our most necessary services. Join us and Sarah Hunt of Hunt Public Policy as we discuss how the rise of broadband utilities, along with all the others, threaten the foundation of our right to property, and a prosperous society.

A free people demand that they solve their own problems. The same principle (of subsidiarity) applies directly to communities, as well. Whether we're talking about state rights vs. the federal government, your local school district vs. the state capitol, or your store manager vs. corporate HQ, those most immediately and directly connected to a problem are best suited to solve the problem. Abandoning this idea means surrendering not just your responsibility to deal with difficult situations, but your autonomy to do as you see proper.

These officials are often personally responsible for implementing major programs that can either protect or hurt liberty. Today, we're examining some of Joe Biden's top picks for his cabinet, from the Department of Justice all the way to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Joe Biden's inauguration caps a wild election year and beginning to 2020, but it most certainly will not be the end of anti-freedom shenanigans. In today's episode, we explore what is going on with the Republicans in the deep south, and wonder if the US is categorically shifting to the left. We rip apart the LARPing rioters at the Capitol on January 6th but worry about civil liberty violations that could be coming from this. And finally, we take some time to figure out the insane response to these riots, from state cultists decrying the sanctity of Congress to Big Tech's influence on free speech.

And for our 10th episode, we introduce Shout Outs to those we want to highlight or thank. Enjoy!

The coronavirus pandemic has brought about the greatest onslaught of government regulations in modern history. Local governments ordering the closures of businesses, governors limiting capacity in churches, and the economic control of major industry -- these are the tools bureaucrats and politicians are using to strike at the heart of liberty. Which makes us wonder -- where do these local officials get the power to do all this? Join us as we explore the legalities behind these orders, the lawsuits against them, the fundamental principles at play, and what can be done to change.

History is an important study for not simply understanding what happened in the past, but for making sense of our current day. But it's not as simple as looking at a record of events. History is written by historians, fallible as any of us, and written using only the evidence that has survived to this day. Figuring out the human story requires a continual search for evidence of what has been lost and making sure we account for the inherent biases in our interpretive lenses. When we don't, we risk ignoring key truths and undermining the very principles that give rise to personal liberty, such as what has happened throughout all of modern academia, media, and even business.

Since at least the Roman Empire, politicians and leaders have promised their people anything they want to hear. Food, roads, entertainment, you name it. It's a tactic that has been used to cover up mistakes, foolishness, or undesirable plans.
We often forget just how essential property is to our lives. More than just material possessions, property is the byproduct of our most human activity: creation. Property isn't just owned by us, or come from us. We are our own property, and when governments seek to restrict your use of it or control it, it borders on bureaucratic fascism. Today we take a crack that most fundamental human right. Also, we contemplate if the French Revolution could have been saved.

In today's episode we dive into something we touched upon a couple of episodes ago. James Madison and other Federalists argued that writing down the natural rights the government was obligated to protect would create a dangerous precedent. The danger? By writing it down, you limit the right, and you create a culture that says you only have a right if it's written down. We see how strong that argument really is, only here on Self Evident and Forgotten.

Quick notes: we had a couple audio issues with volume and some white noise. We're working to settle in to the optimal recording settings, but we appreciate you listening through!
