After spending two weeks in a class called “The Art of Storytelling," hgh school students from Sitka Fine Arts Camp share their stories. They worked with New York Times audio producer Sarah Diamond, writing, listening, and learning how to tell true stories from their own lives: the small moments, the turning points, in some cases the things they haven’t said out loud before.

Voices from Lincoln Street: An Experiment in Reverse Tourism (abridged version)

There’s been a cruise boom in Sitka Alaska, with more people coming to the island community than ever before. To feel a bit more connection to the people filling the town, Sitka Tells Tales set up on the street to talk with tourists about where they’d take a visitor in their home communities and to ask for stories of turning points and things they don’t always share. It's an experiment, it's audio therapy, and it's funny and surprising in places.

Produced by Ellen Frankenstein & Becky Meiers
Edited by Ellen Frankenstein
Sound Mix/Design/Additional Editing Dave Emmert
Music by Lincoln street buskers including Ted Howard & Rick Fleischman , Pointy and the Birds, John Ingman and Bryan O’Callaghan.

Tenakee Springs is a small community of about 100 -150 people located on Chichagof Island in Southeast Alaska

This episode and the Tenakee event also celebrates the KCAW Raven Radio translator upgrade project,

Voices from Lincoln Street: An Experiment in Reverse Tourism

There’s been a cruise boom in Sitka Alaska, with more people coming to the island community than ever before. To feel a bit more connection to the people filling town, Sitka Tells Tales set up on the street to talk with tourists about where they’d take us as a visitor in their home communities and to ask for stories of turning points and things they don’t always share.

It's an experiment, it's audio therapy, and it's funny and surprising in places.

Original broadcast on KCAW.ORG September 19th, 2023
