Episode notes

This week's episode dips into the work and wisdom of Charlie Munger. It's not the first time, and given his enormous success during his long life, won't be the last either.

Allan's thought for the week

Study your hero's, but don't be cowed by them.

Book of the week

This week's book recommendation provides a fairly short, and extremely useful, explanation of Charlie Munger's investing style, the part he played as Warren Buffett's partner at Berkshire Hathaway, and advice on what you can do to try and follow in his footsteps.

It's called 'Charlie Munger, the complete investor" by Tren Griffin, and is a great place to start if you are new to Charlie Munger or to value investing more generally.

Article of the week

If this week's book has wet your appetite and you want to learn more about Charlie Munger's life then a great place to start is withhis wikipedia entry. You can find it here

Media of the week

There is no replacement for watching Munger in person, and the best place for this is via one of his many interviews that are available from YouTube. Head on over to the sight, search for "Charlie Munger interview" and a whole string of great things will come up.

Episode notes

In his first episode of 2026 Allan reviews a book on magic (of the economic and business kind), then moves on to look at why we don't invest, what the Government is doing to try and encourage us to do so, and what else we can do to ensure that our finances are in order for the coming year.

So this week's book recommendation, The Meaningful Money Handbook, is as good a guide as you are going to find out there. The author, Pete Mathew, through his videos, podcasts, and this book, manages to make the topic about as interesting as it can be. It is well worth a look.Money

It's available as an audiobook, just as Allan likes it, or you can buy it from your book shop of choice.

Episode notes

Despite feeling a deep sense of investment gloom Allan has dragged himself to the microphone to share his favourite investment related finds for this week.

Allan's thought for the week

Being a philosopher at heart, Allan loves a good thought experiment. This week he gets his teeth into one that is investment related.

If you want to read the Motley Fool article that sparked it all off then you can find it here.

Resource of the week

This week's resource is a Substack newsletter and podcast from Paul Scott. It's not free, but it's a great way of keeping up with UK company news, and it's really entertaining too.

You can find it here

Article of the week

Is a crash coming? Take a look at this article. It's a great example of why many folks think that one is.

The next dotcom 'bubble burst' could be coming and these are the signs anyone with investments or a pension must not ignore. Now ANNE ASHWORTH tells what you should do to protect your money
Money | This is Money

Podcast of the week

Finally, in order to end on a more cheery note, this week's podcast recommendation is an optimistic interview with David Gardner, one of the co-founders of the Motley Fool. It comes from the Investing For Beginners podcast and you can find it on Apple Podcasts here or search for it on your podcast player of choice.

Episode notes

The focus of this episode is a different style of investing to the long term buy and hold strategies that have dominated in recent weeks.

Allan's thought for the week

Allan considers the implications of shocks, such as the WH Smiths accounting irregularities, to a focussed investing strategy.

Resource of the week

This week's resource is an audio lecture series on the topic of big picture investing. It was originally recorded as part of the Modern Scholar series and is available from sites like Audible. You can find details of it here.

Article of the week

This week's article recommendation comes from MoneyWeek magazine and highlights how, even if big picture investing looks appealing, finding the sorts of data you need to make it work might actually be getting harder.

Why investors can no longer trust traditional statistical indicators

Podcast of the week

This week's podcast recommendation comes from Unhedged. The episode is from 14 August and is called "Will markets ever care about anything?". It's relevant to our big picture discussion because it discusses Trumpism, the effects it has on our ability to make predictions about the future both within the US and on the geopolitical scene, and what this does to investing markets in both the short and long term.

You can find it on Apple Podcasts here or by searching for Unhedged in your podcast player of choice.

Episode notes

This week's show takes a look at one of the titans of the investing world, and recommends an interesting article and podcast episode too.

Allan's thought for the week

Following a re-energising holiday, Allan discusses the pitfalls of tinkering with your portfolio.

Resource of the week

This week's resource is the book Poor Charlie's Almanack. It is a collection of talks from Charles T. Munger and very definitely comes with the Allan Tweddle seal of approval.

You can find the free online version of the book here or you can buy it from any good bookshops (and some bad ones as well).

Article of the week

This week's article discusses the fact that Bitcoin, and other crypto-currencies, are disrupting the gambling industry. This is a new one for Allan and he can't help but wonder what kind of knock on effects there could be for other related businesses.

How Bitcoin Casinos Are Disrupting Traditional Online Gambling Markets

Podcast of the week

Episode notes

The theme of this week's podcast is company research. Getting hold of good research isn't always easy, but maybe this week's resource recommendation will help. Then again, finding research is only half the battle. Understanding it, and knowing its limitations, is even more important.

Allan's thought for the week

This week Allan considers the limits of doing your own research. There are limits to what we can know and what we can understand. Sometimes all you can do is go with your gut or take a punt on advice from other folks who know more than you do.

For those interested in the philosophical podcast that inspired Allan's musings, you can find Julian Baggini's Microphilosophy podcast here. Take a look at his How To Think Like A Philosopher series.

Resource of the week

One of the things that professional investors have access too when they are making decisions is detailed and well researched analyst reports.
These used to be really difficult for private investors to obtain, but that's changed in recent years. This week's resource is one of those places that makes them available to folks like us as well.

Research Tree: The home of professional equity research

Article of the week

This week's article recommendation is a reminder to reflect on whether an investment opportunity offers future long term growth or whether it is merely a short term thing.

The vinyl revival switches to CDs and DVDs thanks to Gen Z's 1990s obsession

Podcast of the week

Research suggests that just 4% of companies will be responsible for all the long term growth on the stock market. Tom Slater, the manager of Scottish Mortgage investment trust, looks to identify and invest in those companies. In this week's podcast recommendation he discusses how he goes about it.

Merryn Talks Money , Why Playing the Long Game Still Matters with Scottish Mortgage’s Tom Slater

In this week's podcast Allan shares a resource to help with future diversification, an article discussing the insurance industry, and an investing intro podcast worth bookmarking to share with future newbies.

Allan's update

In a week where the FTSE 100 hits fresh highs of over 9000 Allan discusses how to cope when your own, painstakingly planned, portfolio actually goes down.

Resource of the week

"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"

Allan hopes you are all following IG Groups save our stock market campaign, and doing everything you can to make London the best place to invest in the world. But just in case that doesn't work out, this week's resource might be worth checking out. It's an Investors Chronicle series from the current custodian of their stock screens (as discussed in my review of 4 Ways to Beat the Market, by Algie Hall), that looks at applying their current screens to some overseas markets just to see if they can identify any promising international investments for anyone who wants to spread their wings a bit:

Article of the week

The article I'm recommending this week is written by Chris Lay, UK CEO at Marsh McLennan, in City AM., and it's a heavy one.

A UK captive insurance regime will make Britain more competitive

Insurance is one of those things that the UK does really well. It's child's play to find profitable insurance companies that pump out dividends on the UK market to stash in your portfolio, but understanding what they do, and how the industry actually works, is more of a challenge.

Podcast of the week

This week's podcast recommendation comes from a show which is unlikely to appear here very often. Martin Lewis, founder of moneysavingexpert.com and well-known financial advisor to the masses, usually focusses on daily finances, bills etc, and rarely mentions investing. In this episode of his podcast, following the UK Chancellor's Mansion House speech proposals to encourage more investing, he chats with a couple of guests about investing in general, the meaning of risk, how to get started, and much more.

Chances are that if you are listening to SITB then you won't learn much in the way of new stuff from this listen. However, it never hurts to have a refresher, and this is definitely one to bookmark so that you can share it with anyone you know who wants to dip their toe in the investing pool for the first time.

The episode is called
"The Martin Lewis Podcast , A beginner’s
guide to investing… who should, how much & where to do it".
You can listen to it on Apple Podcasts here or search for it on your podcast player of choice.

Episode notes

Despite suffering through yet another London heatwave Allan forces himself to his desk to share with you the things he's found that interested him this week.

Allan's update

Allan considers his recent supermarket shopping experiences and what they tell him about the practicalities behind brand loyalty and economic motes.

Resource of the week

To be a good investor, you have to know how to make good decisions, even if the decision is to do nothing. This week's resource is a book that aims to help develop your decision making process by explaining and exploring the algorithms and strategies that, mathematically speaking, produce optimal outcomes.

Algorithms to Live By, by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths

Article of the week

For this week's article, Allan shares his take on a piece from CityAM that discusses the importance of DEI within companies.

Podcast of the week

Following in the footsteps of most of its forebears, the UK Government just released a new industrial strategy. It has been covered widely in the press, but this week's podcast looks at it from the perspective of the professional services sector (included for the first time), and raises the prospect that the document might turn out to be much more effective than most of its predecessors.

It's from the Accountancy Insights podcast and the episode is called "Inside the Industrial Strategy and navigating VAT reform"

You can listen to it here on Apple Podcasts or search for it in your podcast player of choice.

In this week's podcast Allan considers the pros and cons of market volatility and market disruptors.

Allan's update

Constant news, and the resulting volatility in share prices, is great if you are a trader, or even a short term, in/out kind of investor. But if you are a buy and hold investor then it is incredibly stressful, particularly just after you've made a purchase.

Episode notes

This week's episode is slightly shorter than usual because Allan has been on holiday. Fortunately, it still contains a resource, article, and podcast recommendation that are well worth your time.

Allan's update

Holidays are a time for switching off and leaving the daily grind behind. But can you ever really switch off from your portfolio? And would you want to?

Resource of the week

This podcast is mainly focussed on the trials and tribulations of the stock picker. However, there are many financial advisors and investment gurus who claim that what really matters for success is asset allocation, (how you distribute your cash between different asset classes), and your risk profile, (the degree of risk your portfolio is exposed too).

Allan is wholly unqualified (and unwilling) to advise anyone on whether this is a good or bad approach. However this weeks resource consists of a set of model portfolios that offer an excellent way for small investors to explore these questions themselves.

https://www.pimfa.co.uk/pimfa-indices/

Article of the week

This week's article recommendation comes from Hermione Taylor in last week's Investors Chronicle.

The OECD warns that tariffs could drive a global slowdown. How should investors react?

How to invest during a global slowdown

Since the above article may prove to be behind a paywall, this week's bonus article is

Ten ways to protect your money from disaster: As the threat of war looms and cyberattacks soar, experts reveal what you can do

Podcast of the week

Behind the Money, Inside Moët Hennessy’s crisis , 18 Jun 2025

This little gem from the Financial Times examines how Moët Hennessy fits within the LVMH group, why it has found itself struggling in recent years, and what implications this has for the group going forward. It's a great reminder that almost all of our investments are sums of their parts and provides some practical examples of the sorts of things we should be looking out for when we are trying to understand how the companies we invest in really work.

You can listen to it on Apple Podcasts here or search for it on your podcatcher of choice.

Episode notes

In this week's episode Allan reviews a book on stock screening, an article on a well-known stock market aphorism, and a podcast interview with the UK manager of Pret A Manger.

Allan's update

This week Allan has been trimming some fat in his portfolio while pondering what to do about his H&T shares.

Resource of the week

Despite all the concerning headlines regarding the hollowing out of the London stock market there are still around 1500 companies for investors to choose from. If you start looking overseas you will add thousands more to your list.

Since you can't hope to watch them all, you need a way of whittling down the number to something much more manageable. That's where stock screens come in. This week's book recommendation offers a great introduction to how they work, and what you can achieve if you learn to use them properly.

Four Ways to Beat the Market, by Algie Hall

Article of the week

This week's article is an interesting little piece from MoneyWeek. There are plenty of aphorisms that do the rounds in the investing world. "Sell in May and go away" is one of those that is commonly touted. But is it really true?

The costly myth of "sell in May"

Podcast of the week

This week's podcast recommendation comes from City AM's Boardroom Uncovered podcast, and is a conversation between Jon Robinson and the UK Managing Director of Pret A Manger, Clare Clough.

It's a nice reminder of the issues facing businesses on UK high streets, and in the food industry in general. And this interview is potentially quite timely, given the rumours that Pret's owners are considering floating the business on the public market.

It's well worth a listen.

Episode notes

In this week's episode Allan shares a resource to turbo-charge your company research, an article that provides a bit of perspective on investing in the first quarter of the 21st century, and a fascinating podcast on the mining industry.

Allan's update

This week Allan has been considering the more practical approach to investing that involves getting to know the product, being a customer, and essentially investing in what you know. As part of his own research he has been looking at IG Group [lse: IGG] and CMC Markets [lse: CMCX], 2 incredibly complex financial trading businesses, and wondering how far this approach can really be applied in practise.

Resource of the week

When Allan first started seriously looking to invest in individual companies he quickly learned the value of good quality, comprehensive data.

Stockopedia Is a data analytics platform, designed for individual investors, the provides all the research tools and company data you could ever need, and much more besides.

Episode notes

In this week's episode Allan shares a useful little directory, an article on cyber security, and a podcast charting the rise and fall of a former high street stalwart.

Allan's update

Since it has been a quiet week for Allan's portfolio he wonders why it remains impossible to keep up with all the research. There's always too much to read, watch, or listen to.

Resource of the week

This weeks resource recommendation is the A-Z of business and financial abbreviations.

It is produced by the ICAEW, and though it won't help you find the next Apple or Amazon, it is a great little resource to help bust some of the financial and business jargon that crosses your path.

Article of the week

The cyber attack on M&S has been big news, but it isn't the only company that has been caught in recent months. This week's article recommendation takes a behind the scenes look at how companies handle cyber incidents - useful to know when you are evaluating how such incidents will affect your investments.

City AM, Monday 26 May 2025

Podcast of the week

This week's podcast comes from the BBC. It is the Toast podcast, and the episode examines the rise and fall of Woolworths. It's an example of how even very successful businesses can fail, and not always for the reasons you might think.

Thanks to modern technology it is easier than ever for companies to interact with their shareholders. Some managers are super keen and it sometimes feels like they are never off the airwaves. Others or a touch more shy, but even they hold regular webinars, online meetings, and Zoom calls following important announcements, such as the release of annual results. In this week's podcast Allan considers the value of these communications, the pros and cons of allocating time to them, and recommends some of the places where they can be found.

Following last week's discussion of RNS announcements, this week Allan takes a brief look at annual reports.

Every company has to produce them, and they are often large, fairly daunting offerings. Allan asks what they are, where they can be found, and whether they are worth small investors' valuable time.

Most sources of news offer something for every kind of investor. Reading The Investors Chronicle is worthwhile for fund investors, ETF investors, day traders, and simply the market curious. But if you are primarily focussed on buying and selling individual company shares over the long term, then it is really useful to follow company announcements directly.

In this episode Allan looks at company announcements. He explains what they are, and reviews a couple of the best ways to find them.
