Strange things begin to happen to Mark Grayson as he begins to develop superpowers. Luckily, his dad is around to show him the ropes, at least he WOULD be if he weren't so busy saving the world all the time. Mark is forced to go out on his own, and try and figure out how all this superheroing business works. The results are a monumental disaster, at least until he gets the hang of it. Watch Mark thwart thieving super-villains, alien invasions and all sorts of craziness.

Follow our Guest https://www.facebook.com/doug.rice.1610 https://www.imdb.com/name/nm4653141/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/doug-rice-794ba710/ At age 70, the easiest way to describe Doug Rice’s life is that he is a veteran of the United States Air Force, the comics industry, and the animation industry – coming away with an Honorable Discharge, the 1985 San Diego Con’s Russ Manning “Most Promising Newcomer” Award (at age 34!!), and a Daytime Emmy certificate, respectively. In terms of any skills or abilities, he is completely self-taught…though he does NOT recommend that path for most would-be artists. In the early 1970’s, when the old 4-color comics process was hours away from techno-extinction, Rice was hired to work as the one-man production staff of a small new company in Chicago called FIRST COMICS. Some months later his studio duties were expanded to include an original comics title, DYNAMO JOE, a giant-robot series which he created and penciled. From there Doug went off in many other directions as a freelancer: STARBLAZERS (for Comico), PLASTIC MAN and MANHUNTER (for DC Comics), TOXIC AVENGER and WHAT THE--?! (for Marvel), ROGER RABBIT (for Disney Comics), TALES OF THE TMNT (for Mirage Comics), and STUPID (for Image Comics), among others. It was in 1993 that Rice changed careers and got into TV animation – again, with no formal training at all. Startoons Studio in the south suburbs of Chicago was a beehive of activity for Warner Bros. weekday programming, which found Doug storyboarding and doing background layouts for “Steven Spielberg presents The Animaniacs” which, in turn, led to him being handed an Emmy certificate and ‘letter-of-congratulations’ from the head of KidsWB animation a little over two years after he started. After the studio folded in the summer of 2001, Rice began work on a two-fisted/pulp-style adventure novel, as a sort of hobby between freelance jobs. The book, SQUADRON, is currently in publication in soft and hard volumes designed by the author. Since 2013, Doug has been teaching animation-related classes as a part-time professor at Columbia College of the Arts in Chicago because, even though he never graduated from the University of Illinois Chicago Circle, his Emmy honor counts for a professorship at Columbia. This week we discuss the oddball DC character known as Ambush Bug! Created by artist Keith Giffen in 1982, Ambush Bug was intentionally a silly character Ambush Bug 4 issue limited series published in 1985 Written and illustrated by Keith Giffen. Created by artist Keith Giffen as an intentionally silly character, Ambush Bug first appeared in DC Comics Presents #52 (Dec. 1982)[2] and would make appearances in several other Superman-related comic books in the early 1980s. Paul Kupperberg, who wrote Ambush Bug's first story, recalled, "as Keith was in the office, he sat in on the plotting and offered up Ambush Bug as an antagonist. After Batman fails to save a young girl, he begins taking the drug in order to lift his limitations; however, when the Dark Knight becomes addicted to the substance, his entire life begins to spiral out of control. Kingdom Come was a four-issue limited series published from May until August of 1996 under DC's Elseworlds imprint. Like all Elseworlds, this series was set in an alternate reality outside that of the mainstream DC Universe. The series was written by Mark Waid with fully painted illustrations and covers by Alex Ross. All four issues were collected in both softcover and hardcover editions as well as a slipcase Absolute Edition. The setting for Kingdom Come took place some twenty years into the future of the year that it began publication. The older, more established super-heroes had gone into retirement, giving rise to a new generation of anti-heroes, who did not uphold the same noble values as their predecessors. Waid and Ross wrote Kingdom Come as an indictment against the growing trend of violent anti-hero archetypes that had sprung out of the early 1990s, many of whom, were created by DC's independent rival company Image Comics. The reality of Kingdom Come was re-introduced in 2006 as one of fifty-two parallel worlds in the recreated Multiverse. The Kingdom Come reality was designated Earth-22 (albeit with a few minor differences). Kingdom Come spawned two sequels, the first of which was a two-issue limited series titled The Kingdom, which also generated five satellite one-shot specials. In 2007-08, the storyline "Thy Kingdom Come" was introduced in the pages of Justice Society of America (Volume 3). Although hailed as an official sequel to Kingdom Come, "Thy Kingdom Come" actually pertained to the re-imagined Earth-22 reality. The popularity of the Kingdom Come mythos also spawned a set of trading cards produced by Fleer/Skybox as well as an action figure line developed by DC Direct. Kingdom Come won the 1997 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards for best limited series.

If you were a kid in 2011, on Saturday Morning Cartoons were not a thing and we're sorry you missed out. But you did get to watch Adventure Time, Thundercats (Reboot) Young Justice, Star Wars the Clone Wars and Archer.

Gas cost about $3.53 a gallon, Price William and Kate Middleton said I Do, Japan is shaken up by a 9.0 earthquake and Tsunami, and the Hunger Games Books are released.

The Black Mirror is a Batman storyline featuring Dick Grayson, written by Scott Snyder with illustrations by Jock and Francesco Francavilla. Following the Impostors storyline by David Hine, it's the final arc in the original run of Detective Comics before the series was rebooted into a second volume with Faces of Death during The New 52. It begins the Snyder's Batman run which is continued into Gates of Gotham and The Court of Owls.

This storyline deals with the return of James Gordon Jr. after a long hiatus, reintroducing him into publication as a remorseless killer. His cold psychopathic tendencies are a sort of black mirror of the soul that Dick Grayson sees himself reflected in, they're completely at odds as the son of Batman and the son of Gotham. Snyder also introduces several new characters including The Dealer, Roadrunner, Sonia Zucco and Tiger Shark.

But with his recent arrival to Earth leaving his identity in question, Longshot discovers he's got a long road ahead in uncovering his truest, non-engineered self. Ann Nocenti and Arthur Adams present Longshot!

he first issue of a six-issue miniseries that represents the first major work of both Nocenti and Adams.[1] The Longshot series established Longshot as an amnesiac fugitive from another dimension who discovers that he has favorable probability outcomes, or "good luck," that protect him when his motives are pure, and that he was a paradoxical genetically engineered clone of his future son, raised to be a slave who led a rebellion on his dystopian world against his former master and enemy, Mojo.

The character subsequently becomes a recurring fixture in the various X-Men related books, which see him as a member of the X-Men from 1986 to 1989, a member of Tony Bedard and Chris Claremont's Exiles teams, and a member of the third incarnation of X-Factor from 2008 - 2013, as well as in his own solo adventures. Versions of the character have also appeared in the Ultimate Marvel line of books, and television and video games.

Inferno is an X-teams' event that impacted every other comic whose hero was in or around New York City. There are two separate primary storylines: The New Mutants struggle against S'ym for the soul of Illyana Rasputin, now the Darkchilde, and the X-Men and X-Factor struggle against N'astirh and Madelyne Pryor to regain Nathan Christopher Summers. Inferno is the first X-book storyline to truly be a crossover, in that the story actually continued from one title to another from month to month (X-Men and X-Factor). Sinister and N'astirh independently manipulate Madelyne Pryor, both for their own ends. Madelyne makes a deal with N'astirh to get her son back from Sinister, and becomes the Goblin Queen. The transformation, combined with Sinister's revelations about her origins, and the events in her life (notably her abandonment by Scott Summers) all contrive to force her further into N'astirh's arms as she vows to sacrifice her son for the demon's plan. The X-Men and X-Factor clash over Madelyne - X-Factor mostly concerned for the child and the X-Men mostly concerned for Madelyne, whom they see as wronged by Scott. Into the confusion Sinister throws the Marauders. Everything comes to a head when Jean Grey fights and defeats Madelyne Pryor, rescuing Nathan. At the end, the combined teams fight Sinister and the mansion is destroyed.

Batman & Spider-Man The Kingpin's wife lies deathly ill, and Ra's al Ghul offers a solution: the ailing Mrs. Fisk can bathe in the Lazarus Pit and be restored, but only if the Kingpin helps Ra's kill off 99.5% of the world's population. Only the Dark Knight and the Wall-crawler have any hope of thwarting the uneasy alliance in this globe-spanning adventure.

Ra's al Ghul begins plans for worldwide devastation. He manipulates the Kingpin to his side by infecting the crimelord's wife Vanessa Fisk with cancer and promising him the cure in return for his allegiance. Ra's then orders him to press the button on his machines which would send New York City under the ocean. Ultimately, Spider-Man and Batman interfere and the Kingpin reveals that he knows Ra's' plans and allows the two heroes to board his plane so they can assist him. Defeated, Ra's bows out of the plan gracefully but claims that there is no cure for the cancer. Vanessa convinces her husband that she wishes no further violence, and they leave. Talia al Ghul soon gives the cure to Batman, who then gives it to Spider-Man, who passes it on to the Kingpin.

The demon-sorcerer N'astirh not only wished to rule Limbo, but Earth as well. He conceived of a plot to kidnap 13 human babies in order to sacrifice them in a ritual known as Inferno. Using the babies' energy, he opened a portal between Limbo and Earth, which grew unnaturally hot and people began to succumb to their evil desires. Inferno had begun.

Sinister and N'astirh independently manipulate Madelyne Pryor, both for their own ends. Madelyne makes a deal with N'astirh to get her son back from Sinister, and becomes the Goblin Queen. The transformation, combined with Sinister's revelations about her origins, and the events in her life (notably her abandonment by Scott Summers) all contrive to force her further into N'astirh's arms as she vows to sacrifice her son for the demon's plan. The X-Men and X-Factor clash over Madelyne - X-Factor mostly concerned for the child and the X-Men mostly concerned for Madelyne, whom they see as wronged by Scott. Into the confusion Sinister throws the Marauders. Everything comes to a head when Jean Grey fights and defeats Madelyne Pryor, rescuing Nathan. At the end, the combined teams fight Sinister and the mansion is destroyed.

The Inferno Event lasted from October 1988 thru August 1989. Channelling my inner Sofia... Picture it Sicily 1988/89

George Bush was president, the Niners won the Superbowl, and we said goodbye to Lucille Ball.

At the box office, Batman and Good Morning Vietnam along with a slew Sequels ruled the box office, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Ghost Busters 2 and Back to the Future 2 were top movies.

The boob tube saw The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Cheers, Alf, Murder She Wrote, Empty Nest and Growing Pains at the top of the charts.

Truth: Red, White & Black is a seven-issue comic book limited series written by Robert Morales, drawn by Kyle Baker and published by Marvel Comics. The series focuses on Isaiah Bradley, one of 300 African American soldiers experimented on by the US Army in an attempt to create super soldiers. The original concept for the character came from an offhand comment by Marvel's publisher, Bill Jemas.[1] Axel Alonso was taken by the idea "inherent of politics of wrapping a Black man in red, white, and blue" and "a larger story ... a metaphor of America itself"; he also immediately thought of the Tuskegee Study.[1] In a meeting involving Joe Quesada,[2] Alonso proceeded to pitch the idea to Robert Morales who was brought in to write the story create the supporting cast, and the ending.[1] The idea of an African American Captain America made Morales laugh, but, once he heard the premise, he found it depressing.[1] He says he "wrote a proposal that was so staggeringly depressing I was certain they'd turn it down. But they didn't."[2]

Morales originally envisioned the character as a scientist who experimented on himself, a reference to Silver Age scientists Reed Richards and Bruce Banner; however, Marvel wanted a more explicit reference to the Tuskegee Syphilis Study.[1] Morales was able to push through an ending in which Bradley suffered brain damage, a reference to Muhammad Ali that gave the character a tragic ending.[1] Morales performed extensive research into the time period, which he balanced with editorial suggestions.[1] Bradley's strong marriage came from an unsuccessful Luke Cage proposal by Brian Azzarello.

Published from January 2003 to July 2003, the series Truth: Red, White & Black is composed of seven comics: "The Future", "The Basics", "The Passage", "The Cut", "The Math", "The Whitewash" and "The Blackvine".

The trade paperback collecting the series was published in February 2004 and the hardcover in 2009. The book version of Truth contains Morales's appendix in which he clarifies myth, history and imagination and provides sources for his story.[3]

Their first key series together was published in the beginning of November 1982 which contained four issues. The limited series was written by Bill Mantlo and pencilled by Rick Leonardi.[1] In this series, the villain Magneto is retconned as the father of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver while intending to give up his villainous ways of life.[2] The reveal had some previous clues which were released during Avengers and X-Men titles. This stayed as comic book canon for many decades until it was undone in the 2014 crossover storyline AXIS.

Green Arrow: Longbow Hunters is a graphic novel mini-series featuring Green Arrow. It marked the beginning of Mike Grell's work with the character. The series were successful enough and Grell was soon assigned as the writer of the first ongoing Green Arrow series, which lasted for almost eleven years. Batman A Death in the Family (Not to be confused by Death OF the Family Is a four-issue story-arc from 1988 which ran from Batman issues #426-429.

It can be easily found via Trade Paperback on Amazon, I provided a link in the shownotes which clicking on that link does support the network.

The story was written by the incredible Jim Starlin who also created Thanos illustrated by Connecticuts own Jim Aparo known for his work on Batman, Aquaman and The Spectre. The iconic covers were drawn by the amazing Mike Mignola who also created Hellboy.

Introduced as a replacement for then-Robin Dick Grayson in 1983, the impulsive Jason Todd had grown very unpopular amongst readers. Aware of this, editor Dennis O'Neil conceived of letting fans decide his fate, leading to the creation of the storyline. For 36 hours, beginning on September 15, 1988, readers could call the two numbers to cast a ballot on whether he should live or not. Over 10,000 votes were cast, with a narrow majority in favor of killing the character. In Batman #428, the Joker kills Todd by blowing up the warehouse he is being held hostage in.

Batman relieves Jason Todd of his duties as Robin due to his impulsive nature. Enraged, Jason storms off. On his own, he learns that Catherine Todd is not his biological mother and sets off to find his real mother, eventually tracking her to the Middle East. Meanwhile, the Joker escapes from Arkham Asylum, and Batman learns that he has obtained a nuclear weapon and plans to sell it to terrorists in war-torn Lebanon.

The deaths that still shape the Spider-verse! During the early 1970s, a pair of plotlines changed comic-book mortality forever. Shock followed shock when Spider-Man lost a friend, a lover and an enemy in a dynamic drama that stunned readers as no comic deaths had before and few have since!

From Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Night_Gwen_Stacy_Died Prior to this arc, Norman Osborn had been the Green Goblin, but due to amnesia, he had suspended his identity as the supervillain and forgotten that Spider-Man is Peter Parker. Also, Harry Osborn, Parker's best friend and Norman's son, became addicted to drugs and was sequestered in the Osborn home for detoxification. Norman's parental grief, combined with financial pressure, triggered a breakdown resulting in Norman Osborn remembering his Goblin identity and again targeting Spider-Man and his loved ones for misery.

The Green Goblin abducts Peter's girlfriend, Gwen Stacy, and lures Spider-Man to a tower of either the Brooklyn Bridge (as depicted in the art) or the George Washington Bridge (as given in the text).[1][2] The Goblin and Spider-Man clash, and the Goblin hurls Stacy off the bridge. Spider-Man shoots a web strand at her legs and catches her. As he pulls her up, he thinks he has saved her, however he quickly realizes she is dead. Unsure whether her neck was broken by the whiplash from her sudden stop or had been already broken by the Goblin prior to her fall, he blames himself for her death. A note on the letters page of The Amazing Spider-Man #125 states: "It saddens us to say that the whiplash effect she underwent when Spidey's webbing stopped her so suddenly was, in fact, what killed her."[1]

The Green Goblin escapes, and Spider-Man cries over Stacy's corpse and swears revenge. The following issue, Spider-Man tracks the Green Goblin to a warehouse and beats him but cannot bring himself to kill him. The Goblin uses the opportunity to send his glider to impale Spider-Man from behind. Warned by his spider-sense, Spider-Man dodges, and the glider instead impales the Green Goblin, seemingly killing him. Later, a devastated Parker, back at home, encounters an equally shocked and saddened Mary Jane Watson, who has lost a close friend with Gwen's death, and the two attempt to comfort each other in the wake of their loss.
