Their first queer sci-fi novel, Silicone God, was published by MOIST Books in the UK, and was recently published in the US (House of Vlad Press). They have also published various essays on writing trauma and trauma-writing, time-travel and ethics, as well as short fiction, usually relating to trans-dimensional and futuristic sexuality. Aug Stone (38:56): Aug Stone is a writer, musician, & comedian. His 2023 novel, T_he Ballad Of Buttery Cake Ass, was one of Vulture’s Best Comedy Books Of The Year. Aug is also author of the memoir Nick Cave’s Bar and the comedy novel Off-License To Kill_, and his journalism has appeared in The Quietus, The Comics Journal, Under The Radar, and many more sites and magazines. He was the winner of the 2019 UW-Madison Writers' Institute Poem or Page Competition in the category of literary fiction, and his unpublished novel, Bridgeport Nowhere, was shortlisted for the 2022 Santa Fe Writers' Project Literary Award.

His debut novel, Breakneck: or, it happened once in America, was published by Anxiety Press in late April 2023. He is also the author of the novelette, All Burn Down, forthcoming in October 2023 from Emerge Press, and his second novel Awful People: a ghost story is coming in early 2024 from Death of Print Books.

He holds a GED from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and a BS in English Literature from Edgewood College. He tweets @smitchelmay.

Jessamyn Violet has worn countless different hats and hairstyles. Music: Originally from Boston, MA, Jessamyn began to study classical piano and music theory at the age of 8 and went on to perform Chopin at Steinway in New York City at the age of 18. A few years later, while writing a book about musicians, she was inspired to start drumming. Now she’s worked with legendary musicians in all types of settings—studios, shows, tours and festivals. Some of the significantly awesome people she’s worked with include Tony Berg, Bob Clearmountain, Rami Jaffee, Jessy Green, Eva Gardner, Tim Lefebvre, Jesus Coomes, and Kii Arens.

Dmitry Samarov was born in Moscow, USSR in 1970. He immigrated to the US with his family in 1978. He got in trouble in 1st grade for doodling on his Lenin Red Star pin and hasn't stopped doodling since. He graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993.

He drove a cab—first in Boston, then after a time, in Chicago— which led to the publication of his illustrated work memoirs Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab (University of Chicago Press, 2011) and second cabbie book from a press not worth mentioning.

He has designed and published five books since.

He writes dog portraits and paints book reviews in Chicago, Illinois.

John has worked as a theater director, ghostwriter, trash collector, copy editor, and teacher of environmental ethics, English literature, and history. In 2018 he was Artist in Residence at SPACE Gallery in Portland, Maine; in 2022 he was a resident fellow at the James Merrill House in Stonington, Connecticut. He lives in New England with his wife, the poet Elisa Gabbert, and teaches at Denver’s Lighthouse Writers Workshop.

Dmitry Samarov was born in Moscow, USSR in 1970. He immigrated to the US with his family in 1978. He got in trouble in 1st grade for doodling on his Lenin Red Star pin and hasn't stopped doodling since. After a false start at Parsons School of Design in New York, he graduated with a BFA in painting and printmaking from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1993.

Upon graduation he promptly began driving a cab—first in Boston, then after a time, in Chicago— which eventually led to the publication of his illustrated work memoirs Hack: Stories from a Chicago Cab (University of Chicago Press, 2011) and Where To? A Hack Memoir (Curbside Splendor, 2014).

Music to My Eyes (Tortoise Books, 2019) is his first non-cabbie-related book.

Soviet Stamps (Pictures&Blather, 2020) is the second.

All Hack (Pictures&Blather, 2020) is a summation of his cabbie-related work.

Old Style (Pictures&Blather, 2021) is his first work of fiction. He has exhibited his work in all manner of bars, coffee shops, libraries, and even the odd gallery (when he's really hard up.)

He writes dog portraits and paints book reviews in Chicago, Illinois.

She is the founder and owner of Alchemy Author Services & Workshop, teaches at Lighthouse Writers, and is a creative writing professor at the University of Denver and an assistant creative writing professor at Colorado College. She focuses her writing on class struggle, single motherhood, trauma, mental illness, the supernatural, ritual, and the impact of neurological disease. She is an intuitive Tarologist and has been reading Tarot for over 25 years coupled with her clair abilities and studies under several well-known psychic medium mentors. Nada Alic is a writer in Los Angeles. Her debut story collection BAD THOUGHTS is out July 12, 2022 (Vintage).

From 2014-2016 she collaborated with artist, Andrea Nakhla on an art and fiction book series called “Future You,” featured in Urban Outfitters, Cool Hunting, The Rumpus and elsewhere. In 2019, her short story, “The Intruder” was shortlisted for the CBC Short Story Prize. That summer, Nada attended the Banff Centre for the Arts writing residency. In 2020, She received a literary grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Previously, Nada was an editorial director and community manager for brands such as Etsy, Society6, Gap Inc and Athleta. Mike Keren is a clinical psychologist with advanced training in psychoanalysis and family therapy. He currently maintains a private practice with adults and couples in central New Jersey, although in the past he has worked in a variety of community and correctional facilities. Although he has a general practice he has a particular interest in working with caregivers as well as helping families talk about end of life issues.

Mike enjoys a challenge in his free time and has explored the world of competitive gay tournament bowling (several trophies and a bit of prize money), golf (bored to tears) as well as stand-up comedy. His foray into stand-up comedy even became the subject of a friend’s senior thesis at film school.

Mike worked the open mic and bar comedy scene for several years but decided to leave the stage to the younger folks. He decided then to channel his humor into creative writing. If you are reading this paragraph you are holding his first book in your hands. It's called, Four Funerals, No Marriage: A Memoir.

Mike is supported in his endeavors by his loving husband, Tom, and their two canine children, Carley and Clyde. They divide their time between central New Jersey and the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

Bobby Miller is a writer + filmmaker known for making genre-bending comedies. His short film TUB and feature debut THE CLEANSE add horror and fantasy to the mix. The films’ world premiered at Sundance and SXSW and have screened at film festivals worldwide.

THE CLEANSE was released in theaters by Sony Pictures in 2018 and made RottenTomatoes Top 10 Best-reviewed horror films of 2018 list. It also earned several Fangoria award nominations including “Best First Feature”. He followed it up with directing, and executive-producing CRITTERS ATTACK, a reboot of the cult horror/comedy franchise, for Warner Brothers Home Video & SY FY in 2019.

Shortly before that, he wrote/directed the comedy short film: END TIMES, which played Fantastic Fest, Fantasia, and film festivals worldwide, winning several awards and premiering online as a Vimeo Staff Pick.

He's also written for animated television shows such as SUMMER CAMP ISLAND for Cartoon Network and STAR VS THE FORCES OF EVIL for Disney TV. Outside of his Film/TV work, he's been a digital comedy producer for places like BuzzFeed, SuperDeluxe, MTV, SoulPancake, and Google. He’s currently writing his first novel.

Originally I wanted to name this episode Strongbox but realized that few people would get the reference. Luckily, Spencer did as I explained getting almost shut out of my building by a neighbor as I was rushing inside to make it in time to do the interview because I gambled that I grab coffee and be back within 10 minutes (I made it). After we laughed about that for a while we got into some pretty random but fun conversation about what kind of music he's into, Gen X, his new book, and how he's pro-Steely Dan (another one).

A bit more about Spencer though: He has worked as a sailor, copywriter, economics professor, and record store clerk, among other disreputable professions. He was born in the Detroit suburbs, spent most of his life in Florida, and now lives in San Francisco. His first novel, How I’m Spending My Afterlife, will be published by Woodhall Press in September 2021.

Papal Glow is the time between centuries, that little dust mote trailing in the sun's glare between folds of the partition that separates the public from true knowledge. It is the preventative strain keeping the powers-that-be at bay while the world swirls by unnoticed. This glow imbues a young boy named Leo, who must use the papacy to divide the time between those centuries, speed up modernity at the very beginning of the 19th century, and oppose the ever-growing reign of Napoleon. But as Leo grows into his papal role, the lines between what Leo wants and can achieve grow smaller as well, until Leo sets up a miracle himself and the time between centuries becomes as small as a dust mote.

In this week's episode, I interviewed literary icon, Aaron Burch.

Aaron Burch is the author of the memoir/literary analysis Stephen King’s The Body; the short story collection, Backswing; and the novella, How to Predict the Weather. He is the Founding Editor of HOBART.

He is working on a novel, a maybe-chapbook of short-short prose, and collection of essays, THIS WAS ALL BEFORE THE INTERNET, about growing up and music and religion, essays from which, about Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, and Alice in Chains, have appeared in Salon, Catapult, and The Smart Set.

He lives in Ann Arbor, MI with his collection of almost every ticket stub from a movie and concert he went to in the 90s and early 00s. He teaches at the University of Michigan.

We took time to talk about his music essays, concert experiences, and how Hobart got started. We even spoke about road trips and lock-ins.

In a very strange and wild episode of Textual Healing, I got a chance to interview Leza Cantoral who is one of my favorite people in the lit world today! It gets weird, it gets dark, and it actually gets pretty damn hysterical. It's lit.

Leza is a Xicana writer & Editor-in-Chief at CLASH Books. She is also the host of Get Lit With Leza. As a result of her being a megafan of Lana Del Rey & Sylvia Plath, she curated and edited an anthology of stories called Tragedy Queens: Stories Inspired by Lana Del Rey & Sylvia Plath which is available on CLASH Books. She’s the author of the surreal horror story collection Cartoons in the Suicide Forest & alt lit poetry & social media commentary about modern alienation, Trash Panda.

If the sound is a bit off at times in this episode it's because we were both a bit "lit" during the recording of it, which of course set the perfect mood for us to go off on wild tangents about cults, The Bling Ring, drugs, and how we both originally wanted to be filmmakers.

The main focus though is Leza's truly excellent and diverse taste in music. We go on about Courtney Love, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Marilyn Manson, and Madonna. When we aren't talking about that, we're railing against the patriarchy, what got us both into literature, and annoying guys on the internet.

The best parts are when Leza actually reads a bit of her writing and describes some of the films she made. They aren't at the end of the episode like typical Textual Healing episodes but scattered throughout, so listen to the whole show to catch them!
