O'Brien gets into the Orion Syndicate. Shopping montage! The Syndicate is working with the Vorta? Specifically the Vorta from One Little Ship, so you know his ideas are good. We have some concerns about SI's sapient asset program.

Change of Heart:

Starfleet Intelligence has another Great Idea, this time involving Worf and Jadzia. A Cardassian Defector? How does a laser inject anticoagulants? Worf gets a Note in his Folder. They should not have been sent on a mission together anyway. Miles and Julian conspire(?) to beat Quark, but Quark 4-D chesses Julian in return. We would do war crimes for Dax.

The Magnificent Ferengi: It's never a good sign when Quark looks overly pleased with himself. Moogie has been captured... by the Dominion? And QUARK has to rescue her? Rom learns what Moogie has been up to. STONKS. All Nog needs is a good job title and he's in. Ferengi are negotiators, not warriors. Emo Vorta. Everything that can go wrong does. IGGY POP??? Nog discovers the Weekend at Bernies gambit. Maybe Ferengi are warriors? This whole episode is a sunday night RPG session (appreciative). Vorta malevolent curiosity. Only in a Ferengi episode would accidentally killing a hostage be ok. The best Trek episodes are ones where the actors are clearly enjoying themselves.

Waltz: Sisko and Dukat road trip gone wrong episode. Nebula-class chat. Dukat "saves" Sisko? Dukat is hallucinating a lot, but that's fine, right? Dukat has an interesting memory of his two stints as DS9 commander. Fake Kira might be even better than real Kira. Huh, maybe Dukat just needs to be removed from the Alpha Quadrant. This episode is deliciously uncomfortable. Dr. Cox??? Marc Olaimo put in the labor over the last 5.5 seasons in order for this episode to work.

We had a good week. Too bad these episodes are less good.

Sons and Daughters: Worf continues to bridezilla. Bet you forgot Alexander existed, because Worf sure did. Worf continues to be a terrible dad. Dukat is a less terrible parent than Worf, somehow. Dukat is able to simultaneously be genuine and try to find every possible advantage. Martok is, on the other hand, a swell dude and a better friend than Worf deserves.

Behind the Line: The Defiant is operating out of Starbase 375 and kicking butt. So much that Sisko's skills are being "better used elsewhere". Poor Captain Dad. The Ketracel White situation is getting worse, and Damarr has no opsec. The Female Changeling stops by the station to goo with Odo, and gosh is that bad for the resistance cell.

A Time to Stand: Nearly everyone's on the Defiant, and the war isn't going great. Oh yeah and Jake is still on the Dominion-occupied DS9. Tetracel White is a strategic resource. Rocks and Shoals: O'Brien couldn't pull a Scotty, so now the Defiant's in trouble! Nog remembers what happened last season. Battles that we only see in DS9. Protests we only see in DS9. Kira realizes she's a collaborator now. The Dominion has never dealt with supply line issues before, apparently.

STRIKE! Quark's bar workers unionize. Unfortunately, this is against Ferengi law, and also anathema to Cop Odo. Maybe that's why they love each other so much. Facets: Nothing can go wrong with everyone embodying Dax's former hosts, right? Dax gives Quark an earjob just to make him be a woman. Kurzodo? Improbable Cause: Directed by Avery Brooks! It's weird how major diplomatic incidents frequently get explained away by "they're Romulan". [GENERIC CAVE SET]. Defiant: You know this is a utopia when the doctor can order vacations. Dax clearly thinks that Kira banged Riker. Because Dax also clearly banged Riker. You know something's wrong when someone is mean to O'Brien. Villainous Goatee! What happens if you put aluminum foil in the replicator? Kira being the A-plot main character is very pre-2001. Using the Maqis and the Bajoran rebellion as examples of morally grey terrorism is not ideal. Reading Enterprise logs must be sanity-wrecking.

Fascination: DS9 does a sex farce. Bashir has significant leeway to diagnose colleagues as "assholes". Lwaxana Troi may be the galaxy's worst seatmate, but it is pretty fun to see her making Odo uncomfortable. What ARE jumja sticks? Oh hey, Xanthi fever. Sisko knows something's wrong when people want to cancel dinner. Jake has rizz. Lwaxana's Google Alerts include Odo, Captain Picard, and sex festivals. On the other hand, the O'Briens' relationship plot feels really grounded and realistic.

S3E5: Second Skin S3E6: The Abandoned

Second Skin: Sisko bullies Garak. Cardassians seem to have very good cosmetic surgery for a lizard species. The Cardassian Sleeper Agent program is weird. Cardassians use unlabeled data crystals. Cardassia has much more depth to it than normal "enemy" cultures, or even most non-Earth cultures.

The Abandoned: Justen loves a hot pirate lady. Odo now has a room for his bucket. 16-20 is not an age gap that we feel great about but it's... okay for some reasons we lay out. Sisko and Miles dadding is great. The concept of the nature/nurture thing is good, but the end result strays real close to "crack baby". The fact that Odo is willing to throw his entire life away to save one orphan is great, and it's run over by the actual plot.

Dax: Dax and... Bashir? are in charge of Engineering? How wide is the Trill definition of "you"? Odo works better as a private detective than as an officer of the "law". Bashir is just immature, not full fedora. Is Garak a power bottom? Maybe, but Julian is not a top. Imagine being 200 and being around a hyperactive puppy dog 20 year old. The Dax trans narrative was not explicitly intended but it's amazing how directly it hit the mark. O'Brien Suffers level: Raktajino.

The Passenger: Odo, you must take this intern. No one could have seen this twist. This is a pretty beige episode. It seems too early in a series to do the "this character is acting out of character" trope.

Q is more fun when he's trying to do something interesting, rather than just getting back with HIS ex. You get real real bored when you're a god. Sisko is the most straight (but not narrow) captain. Bashir didn't show up to the game session.

The Grind: Dragons, war machines, what's the difference. All the characters are damaged in ways unrelated to their prior experience in DIE. Some interiority shift! If the consequences are real but the actions aren't, what does that mean? A long diversion into what a meaningful choice in a game even is.

As we wish to show solidarity with both striking guilds, we encourage you to still enjoy watching and reading what you like, but any release of new episodes will have to avoid struck work until an equitable agreement is reached.

Where that leaves us is in a pickle. If/Then/Else: It's Remedial Chaos Theory! The show played with the format of broadcast tv to emotionally whiplash you, and it doesn't come across as well on streaming, but that doesn't make this any less of an amazing episode... Shaw's exit(?) was because of real-life things, not conflicts, and was a character choice. Only Fusco seems to be mispredicted by the Machine. Even the Machine knows root is the Queen.

Ctrl+Alt+Del: The difference between the Machine and Samaritan is further explored, including bottom-up and top-down methodologies. Fusco is a hockey man, and is ride or die for Team Machine. We love to hate Control. Bio-informatics defined. Schrodinger's Rocket Launcher.

Wingman: Which PoI writer has written the most Fusco F*cks episodes? John isn't allowed to do his favorite things (kneecapping) any more now that he's a cop. Bear is the best boy, yet again. Brotherhood: ELIAS! Winston Duke in a guest role. You can gauge how murderous a woman in the PoI universe is by the height of her heels (Control being the exception that proves the rule). We don't enjoy the Brotherhood stuff, and it's also the least fun "kids in danger" episode so far. Poor Bear. There's some wrestling discussion that Zathras sort of started ignoring after a while, sorry.

Last Call: Expanding on the word "no". What this episode fails to do is what PoI normally does well--taking a trope and genre-shifting it. Someone knowing how electricity works should not be the highlight of an episode. There's so much they could have done with this episode but nothing works and everyone's characterization feels off.

RAM: Alpha version of John! Kara's back--in a flashback. As is John. And Decima. And Shaw... No Fusco though. In a choice between impromptu dental work and death, we choose death. Decima has ALLLLWAYS BEEN HERE *waggles fingers*. Rick is not quite horrible enough to be convincing.

Fusco is the sterling example of how this project actually had positive outcomes. Law and Order has gone on WAY too long.

Alethia: Fusco might be the best character, or at least the most likeable. Fusco/Shaw unlikely animal pairings. We actually think John's grief arc is good, if not fully healthy at the beginning. The Control/root conflict is a clash of true believers, in a fascinating way. "Shaw is a hammer and John is a scalpel" is proof that Finch is romantically entangled with John.

Secrets of the Soul: In which we discuss tentacle-to-glowing-ball ratios, telepath power creep, nurses in adverse working conditions (pak'ma'ra and telekinetic), telepath ORGIES and the least sexy sexposition ever, and some very questionable infosec policies. And then Ana murders Jude. And then they talk about the sex scene some more. Zathras suffered.

Written by Neil Gaiman?!? Jude agrees with Lochley, exactly once. G'Kar is rendered temporarily homeless by magical realism. For that matter, everyone gets visited by ghosts from their past. A crispy critter comes back to visit, making exactly zero people happy--Morden is upgraded from low-rent John Travolta to evil John Mulaney. Richard comes up with the dead-ex Ghostbusters corollary. Jude gets quite angry about the "humor". Much discussion of what could have been done with the Reebo and Zooty airtime instead. Jude politely requests "G'Kar/Picard on Risa" fics.

In which we establish the official show motto. “A Day in the Strife” features a very well-done addiction plotline tacked onto a character who is awful for other reasons, a menacing alien pinecone that threatens to blow up the station if the B5 staff flunks the SAT, Sheridan’s new Narn boyfriend, and the introduction of the Minbari Sacred Dremel and Ritual Belt Sander. In “Voices of Authority,” G’Kar gives Garibaldi homework (but doesn’t threaten him with death by pine cone), the First Ones get a CGI upgrade an exciting new Bionicle look, and Justen, as Professor of Himbology, rules that Zach Allen is not a himbo but Musante still shouldn’t be mean to him. Pour one out for another maintbot.
