Gunpoint Robbery, Hyde Park Produce Closes Doors, Bridge Writing Workshop Still On Hiatus

A UChicago affiliate was robbed on campus last Monday morning in front of the William Eckhardt Research Center. A student-led creative writing workshop and civic engagement program for people incarcerated at the Cook County Jail remains on hiatus nearly a year after two former UChicago students settled a lawsuit against the Cook County Sheriff.

Also, the grocery store Hyde Park Produce is closing its doors, and Max Palevsky East reaches its third week with no working water fountain.

In 1967, University President George Beadle appointed a faculty committee—chaired by First Amendment scholar Harry Kalven Jr.—to prepare “a statement on the University’s role in political and social action.” Journalist Jamie Kalven, Harry Kalven Jr.’s son, sat down with the _Maroon_ to walk through the Kalven Report. In the 14 years he spent editing his father’s manuscript on the First Amendment and the American tradition of freedom of speech, Jamie Kalven reviewed hundreds of Harry Kalven Jr.’s papers to familiarize himself with his father’s thinking. Providing context on his father’s writing, Jamie Kalven argues that we, now in a moment of attacks on academic freedom and higher education, should return to “the point of departure” provided by the document.

The following is a series of audios recorded on the main quad of the University of Chicago on Thursday, October 19, 2023. It features interviews with pro-Palestinian and pro-Israeli community members demonstrating at around 12 p.m. It also features an interview with Maroon News reporter Emma Janssen recorded on November 9, who attended and reported on the rallies.

The rally was organized by a collection of UChicago Jewish organizations, including Law Students for Israel, the Jewish Business Student Association, and UChicago Maroons for Israel, who scheduled the rally with the University from noon to 1 p.m. at the center of the quad to express support for Israel following the October 7 attacks on Israel by Hamas. This rally came as Students for Justice in Palestine continued its daily occupation of the quad from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., which began on Monday, October 16.

The audio is mostly unedited, with some segments omitted for brevity’s sake.

Interviews were conducted by reporters from The Maroon’s Podcasts division, who strived to remain impartial and provide an unbiased record of the events of that day. Some listeners may find the recordings offensive due to antisemitic and Islamophobic language.

This forum, entitled “Disparity: A thin line divides human realities,” will gather global policymakers, scholars, and subject-matter experts to explore existing disparity throughout the world. It will address various topics of global significance, including refugees of war and climate, despotic governments, and both new and protracted global conflicts.

Highlights of the 2023 Forum include:

Addresses by Ernesto Zedillo, Former President of Mexico (1994–2000), and Shirin Ebadi, the first female Judge in Iran and a recipient of the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize.
Panel discussions on inequity and social mobility, the Iranian future, and the struggle for Afghan freedom.

"Tito Carrillo is a trumpeter, composer, and educator whose music blurs the lines between Afro-Caribbean music traditions and modern jazz. Born and raised in Austin, TX, by a Puerto Rican father and Mexican-American mother, Carrillo came to prominence in the mid-nineties of Chicago’s rich jazz and Latin music scenes, becoming a top call soloist, sideman, and bandleader.

"Heralded as one of the most important saxophonists of our time, composer and producer Chico Freeman has perfected an immediately recognizable approach to music and composition, blending what he has experienced from his past and providing fluidity into a future of infinite musical possibilities.

"As part of the Freeman family legacy of Chicago (legendary NEA Jazz Master saxophonist Von Freeman is his father and guitarist George Freeman and drummer Bruz Freeman are his uncles), Chico amassed a diverse performance résumé including R&B, blues, hard bop, and avant-garde. His collegiate studies in Advanced Composition and Theory at Northwestern University propelled him to a position teaching composition at the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) Music School, as well as a Master’s degree in Composition and Theory at Governor State University, where he studied composition with NEA Jazz Master Muhal Richard Abrams." Student Report: GSU Protests at NLRB

On December 16th the NLRB will close a comment period on a proposed regulation to exempt graduate students preforming work for compensation from the definition of an employee. Graduate student workers from the University of Chicago, Northwestern University and Loyola University marched in front of the NLRB's Chicago office to protest the exemption and make their voices heard in hopes to inhibit a possible vote on the measure.

An earlier version of this description incorrectly stated an NLRB vote was to be held on December 16th. The description above has since been edited to reflect the accurate information.

Entitled, What happens when Fascism wins, this exhibit exhibits newly translated poems from poets exiled or assassinated for opposing General Francisco Franco’s regime. The original texts, their masterful translations, and historical paraphernalia are on display on the third floor of the Reg until the end of the Spring quarter.
