Strengths include solid lore-building regarding the wizards, including why they’re forbidden from boning down, and more of Terry’s musings on identity. We're so happy to have had Amr as our first guest host... and so very sorry this was their first Discworld book. What was probably somewhat funny pop cultural references in 1990 turn out to be surprisingly offensive Orientalism in 2020. This may be one where we don't really recommend you read this, at least not early on in Discworld.

Arguably the most famous of the Discworld plot threads, the Guards novels start with this story. Destiny, Dragons, Politics, Gender Roles and Subversions Thereof, and at least a few of Sam's ruminations on inequality and power. If Death is Sir Terry's authorial self-insert, Sam Vimes is Sir Terry's moral self-insert. If you love noir, urban fantasy, high fantasy, cults, or surprisingly relevant political satire, you will find something to like in this book. Just don't ask for your figgin to be toasted.

Weeelllll this book's problematic section isn't quite as long as Pyramids but there's a Mesoamerican parody that stuck out like a sore thumb. This book wants to be a few different things and doesn't quite do any of them--it's mostly "bad things happen near Rincewind" and historical/literary jokes. No invisible dragons, despite already being Discworld canon, and no Pope-bothering.

On the plus side, there is a high percentage of the book taken up by the Luggage being a good good boy.

Look, we didn't really have much of a plan for this, and it's pretty chaotic--and even after three hours of recording we only managed to cover around half of what we could have talked about. Seriously, though, if you haven't read the books, these episodes could spoil a lot for you. S1E13 - Witches Abroad

Magrat inherits the duties of a fairy godmother, and obviously Granny and Nanny come along to make sure the wedding is adequately broken up. There is a wonderful "British tourists on the Continent" storyline, some extremely funny murder-cat moments, the Disc's second-greatest lover, the first appearance of Dwarf Bread... and then Sir Terry decides to incorporate Voodoo as a major plotline, which is unfortunate to put it mildly. We discuss this as well as four people outside the religious and cultural practice of Voodoo can, but if this topic is upsetting, please take that into account.

It's a warm midsummer as the three Lancre witches return home, but things are going to turn chilly on many fronts. Marital strife, coven conflicts, and the actual Fae combine in the best Witch book yet in the series. Also the first one where pTerry specifically recommends reading earlier books before diving in.

It should be noted that Justen now knows enough Discworld to point out that the wizards didn't summon Death to solve their problems in this wizard-containing story. And the Luggage has been supplanted by the Librarian as their favorite. Which, honestly, is valid.

Per Vetinari's orders, they are taking on additional recruits to diversify the face of the modern watch, including a troll (Detritus, previously appearing in Moving Pictures), a dwarf (Cuddy), and a w... (Angua--if you know, you know). In a meditation on firearms, the role and purpose of police in a modern society, and what it really means to be a man (or w...) of the city, Terry takes us over towers and under sewers in a fast paced chase for the truth. And truth can be hard to come by in Ankh-Morpork when there are so many easy lies instead.

While this is probably the best Rincewind we've seen, the book is weighed down by leaning hard on a mishmash of Fantasy Asia tropes... and then there's the Silver Horde and some repeated sexual assault jokes. We're not saying DON'T read the book, but approach it with open eyes and an understanding that it overall may not sit well with you. We didn't feel comfortable deeply dissecting the Fantasy Asia stuff considering our own backgrounds, but we want to circle and highlight it to you. That being said, there are some wickedly smart jokes throughout--and ample room for TwoWind shipping.

Maskerade! Every face a different shade... after reading Nanny Ogg's new cookbook, that is. Seeking unpaid royalties (and a young witch to replace newly married Magrat), Nanny and Granny head to Ankh-Morpork. They experience Culture, commit shenanigans, and consider questions of morality.

Meanwhile, when Sir Terry isn't making her the butt of every single fat joke he can think of, Agnes Nitt has a journey of self-exploration, feeling the twin pull of the life she wants as Perdita X Nitt, famous opera singer, and the life she knows as Agnes the witch-in-potentia.

Because this is vaguely Phantom of the Opera (actually a little less than we thought woops), we invited our good friend Coast to join us (noted Phantom expert and Locked Tomb fanatic). While Jingo is broadly classified as a Guards book, it really is the beginning of a series of Sam Vimes books with the Watch in orbit around him. There's also a LOT of our favorite carnivorous flamingo, The Patrician himself. There's submarine action, a plot head-fake that would be at home in film noir or Tom Clancy, and lots and lots of politics.

It also marks an inflection point in Discworld novels, at least to those of us very familiar with them. Sam very much finds who he will be in the back half of the Discworld library in this book, and much of the commentary that happens around the plot is clearly Sir Terry rethinking some of his earlier easy stereotypes.

The Last Continent is about Fourecks, a country legally distinct from Australia because Sir Terry says so--and because it's a country of original people and accidental new inhabitants, rather than colonial powers. Also it hasn't rained for a very long time.

The Fifth Elephant is a pivotal novel in the Discworld series. While Sir Terry lightens up (slightly) on the Hammer Horror monsters of Uberwald from Carpe Jugulum, he also retools them into very clear political allegories. It is a standout among the 41 novels--so much track is laid for the future as the author breaks Ankh-Morpork out of medieval stasis.

And you may never look at Carrot the same way again.

Seeing the Watch from the outside is fascinating, and the subject of quite a bit of our discussion.

In this pivot point in the series, we're joined by the creator of Lego Ankh-Morpork to talk about old and new heroes, the changeover between Kirby and Kidby art (and which we like better), and the canon-but-also-kind-of-fan-fiction nature of The Last Hero.

"Poets have tried to describe Ankh-Morpork. They have failed. Perhaps it's the sheer zestful vitality of the place, or maybe it's just that a city with a million inhabitants and no sewers is rather robust for poets, who prefer daffodils (and no wonder).

I am no poet, or artist, or architect (I am probably more B.S. Johnson than Leonard of Quirm) but I decided to undertake the mammoth task of recreating the Discworld's greatest city, one Lego brick at a time. It started out very much as a personal project which has grown into something so much more.

Tiffany Aching, a 9 year old living on a sheep farm in the rolling grassy lowlands of the Disc, is not your ordinary child. However, we saw a lot of ourselves in her. This meditation on loss, childhood, and what it means to be someone who actually THINKS and LOOKS in a world full of people too busy just getting by is a beautiful, scary, and hilarious story written by, as our guest puts it, "possibly one of the greatest authors of the last thousand years".

Ursula Vernon, aka T. Kingfisher is the author and illustrator of far more projects than is probably healthy. She has written over fifteen books for children (many of which Aaron has read to his children multiple times with great enjoyment), at least a dozen novels for adults, an epic webcomic called “Digger” and various short stories and other odds and ends.

According to the writer of the best selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse.

We are joined to discuss Snuff by Angry Staff Officer (either a nom de plume or nom de guerre, we're not sure which). Angry Staff Officer is an on-again, off-again angry staff officer, who made the odd jump from enlisted infantry to engineer officer and is now meandering the warrens of Army doctrine, one dog-eared page at a time. Most often focused on historical events, national security, and occasional rants on Army doctrine. He can be found being cynical and jaded at the Twitter handle @pptsapper and writing at Point of Decision, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. He is a proud member of the Military Writers Guild, winning the Military Writer’s Guild award for most active member in 2015. His other key accomplishments include an intimate knowledge of far too many gins to be healthy, and having once live-tweeted the entire Star Wars saga.

We were so incredibly pleased to be joined by Gabrielle Kent and Rhianna Pratchett, the co-authors of this new book in the Discworld library. Tiffany's story is one of our favorites, and having both more Tiffany and more witch stuff is just the best.

Tiffany Aching's Guide to Being a Witch would make a great holiday present! We're not sure yet of a US release date, so consider buying it directly from The Discworld Emporium or Discworld.com (and if other things just sort of happen to fall into your shopping basket... well, blame the Feegles).

If you want to check out the Mythical Creatures series Rhianna mentioned, keep an eye on the BBC Radio Four site as well as BBC Sounds. It looks like it starts airing December 18!

Gabrielle Kent is the author of the Alfie Bloom and Knights and Bikes series. She collaborated on the Rani Reports series with her husband as Gabrielle and Satish Shewhorak.

Gabrielle lives in the North East of England. She grew up in the 1980’s drawing castles and dragons, reading comics, and playing videogames. In the summers, she ran wild with her brothers and cousins on her Granny’s farm in Galway. Her first job was as a video-game artist working on games for PC, Playstation and XBox. She spent sixteen years as a university lecturer teaching students how to make videogames, and ran and hosted various games and animation festivals along the way.

She has always loved exploring castles and in 2006 she visited Castle Coch in Wales. As she looked at a carving of The Fates over one of the fireplaces, an idea for a story crept into her head. When she got home she started typing the story of Alfie Bloom, the boy who inherited a castle and has written many more books since.

Rhianna Pratchett has been a professional writer for several years. Having written numerous features and columns on games, movies and books and originally cutting her journalistic teeth on PC Zone magazine and The Guardian newspaper, Rhianna moved into script writing and narrative design in 2002. In 2007 her work on Heavenly Sword was nominated for a BAFTA and a year later she won a Writers’ Guild of Great Britain ’Best Videogame Script’ award for Overlord.

Alongside writing for videogames, she has also authored the Tomb Raider: The Beginning comics with Dark Horse and the 6-part Mirror’s Edge miniseries with DC Comics and several of her own short stories.

Rhianna has contributed to various books on games narrative including Professional Techniques for Video Game Writing (Edited by: Wendy Despain) and Game Writing: Narrative Skills for Videogames (Edited by: Chris Bateman). She also works with the IGDA Writers’ Special Interest Group, the Writers’ Guild of Great Britain and BAFTA Games to help improve games narrative and the lot of games writers everywhere.

Rhianna currently lives in London, with a couple of neurotic tabbies. True to British form, she drinks a lot of tea.
