A true animated Film this week as we watch The Incredibles from 2004. One of Pixar’s best, this one hits on looks, acting, story, and writing making it completely re-watchable. Fast, strong, invisible and stretchy - the four major super powers - are all represented here. We also get to see the super-villian truth of rich “smart” people - more often a Syndrome than a Batman. Grab some popcorn and check this one out with us - it is as good as you remember.

Anti-capitalism and anti-toxic masculinity come together in a movie about cows starring Rosanne Barr and Judy Dench - non of this was expected when we put on this week’s film, Home on the Range. Kung-fu horses embodying misogyny, a yodeler pied piping livestock to become a land baron, a foul-mouthed blue ribbon cow, a regal cow in a hat and a tone-deaf heifer - all characters in this cartoony offering. No children, no painterly backgrounds - just old fashioned hand animation and a woke message.

This precolonial setting keeps capitalism from being the villain but we’d be hard pressed to name a villain at all other than childishness perhaps. The sequel to Finding Dory this week, where we start by Finding Nemo. A fantastic cast brings the beautiful animation to life. From an uber-sympathetic Willem Defoe to an “unfunny” Albert Brooks, the intention of the casting is impeccable. Pixar is really coming into its own with this one.

Back to Pixar this week as they have a blast with fur texture and character design in Monsters Inc. We learn the power of cuteness and laughter and the dangers of Capitalism - AGAIN. Sully and Mike are inseparable until a little girl with giant eyes appears and tears Sully away. Fortunately Mike is one of Billy Crystal’s more mature characters and they find their way through. This movie is always a delight.

We’re going under the sea - and then back up again to find Atlantis. A city was lost, and now a linguist and his capitalist adventurer buddies are off to find it. And yes, that does mean that the villain in this film is in fact capitalism. Linguist Milo is more powerful than any other language expert as he can speak a language that no one knows just by looking at it, and it’s not even the phonetic alphabet (might there be some pedantic linguistics speak in this episode, you should listen to find out). Also, will the villain die by falling to his death? It’s a secret.

This week we travel to the Incan empire with The Emperor’s New Groove. How do we know it’s the Incan Empire? They kinda allude to it a couple of times in order to promptly forget where, when and who they are. A cast of mostly white actors, all fantastic in their characters, all funny, none of which has anything to do with the Inca or Peru other than the existence of a llama. Enjoyable as this is, we do wonder, quite aggressively, why on Earth did Disney decide to set this film where and when they did.

Lemuel is in heaven today as we got to watch and get to talk about Dinosaur from 2000. Tippet to Verhoven to Katzenberg it’s almost a miracle this movie exists at all. Highly textured dinos against a real world backdrop gives us a post-apocalypse glimpse at an iguanodon and his lemur friends as they join their first herd in an attempt to survive. He makes friends with the old ladies of the bunch, so you know he’s a good one.

Fantasia 2000 brings the original concept of Fantasia to fruition with six new vignettes and one they couldn’t get rid of. The flow is similar and the mouse is back but there are some notable highs and no real animation lows. Interstitials are interstitials and 90% unnecessary but the animation and music are working at a high level. Now to wait another 40 years for the next one.

This week, bafflement abounds as we discuss the 1996 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. We watched it, I dare say we enjoyed it a lot, we still are not sure how or why this movie exists. Beautiful animation, fantastic music, great voice acting (mostly) and yet, why is this? Is it a kid’s movie? No. Does Disney think it is? Yes? But I don’t think there is another G rated movie with the antagonist smelling a woman and then trying to murder her for giving him pants feelings. WHAT IS THIS?

What if Hamlet, but lions. We watched the 1994 classic The Lion King and enjoyed the emotions inherently available in animated faces that simply cannot be duplicated in “live action.” Elton John thought the movie was ruined because his beautiful song was sung by a meerkat, but joke’s on him, it was a genius move.  Sometimes you gotta have a creepy little guy sing to the main characters to get them to fall in love.

This week it’s a love story as old as time along with just a dash of Stockholm Syndrome as we watch Beauty and the Beast. Regarded by many (including one of us) as peak Disney, this film has it all - a girl who looks down on all her neighbors, a boy who looks down on all of his neighbors, and a beast who looks down on everyone - the perfect set-up for love. A lot of the discussion this week is on the time-vortex that is an enchanted castle, along with where are all the French people in this movie set in France?

We’re heading south of the equator with Miss Bianca and the inimitable Bernard in the Rescuers Down Under. This movie deserves more than it got (thanks Katzenberg). The story of young Cody and his one child crusade against poachers needing the RAS to come help him is beautiful and well told. The big thing that could have made it better was an indigenous protagonist (again, thanks Katzenberg). But Miss Bianca, Bernard the hero, Jake the strapping but kind guide, Wilber, and McCleach are all fantastic and the animation is stunning. RIP every actor in the film, but thank you for your excellent work.

This week we liked the movie more than almost anyone else. Everything we wanted The Sword in the Stone to be, it’s The Black Cauldron. Yes, there are a lot of weird cuts and stuff that doesn’t make sense, but there’s also zombies and munchings and crunchings. The drama surrounding the making of this movie causes some head scratching moments, but the visuals and characters make up for it in spades.

Once upon a time, we thought we were going to watch a movie about the trials of friendship. Then we watched Disney’s The Fox and the Hound and found it was no such thing. In a film touted to be a paragon of empathy and friendship we find willful misunderstanding, profiling, hypocritical rage, violence, more parental loss, and so many characters who know this relationship is doomed against the wishes and best efforts of Tod, the fox and the only truly good character in the film.

The tales of the stuffed friends belonging to Christopher Robin, each epitomizing a different aspect of both the human condition and the features of childhood is firmly set in the world of books - literally. It’s 101 Dalmatians and 6000 spots this week. 1961 brings us our first contemporary film, we’re in 50s London that is populated largely but dogs from Connecticut. But at least the cameos show that dogs live forever and none of the ones we loved from Lady and the Tramp were killed in a shelter. Some might very well be in danger from a fur-obsessed lunatic with an excellent theme song though. We love to see a mild mannered king through epic shade, it’s very satisfying. A ballet becomes a legitimately beautiful and fun cartoon this week. Briar Rose née Aurora and her crazy "aunts" make it almost all the way to safety before jumping the proverbial gun and simple pettiness cause her temporary downfall in 1959’s Sleeping Beauty. First - I am sorry about the short bursts of crackling, my editing skills were no match. They are few and brief.

It’s the beginning of the 1950s and Disney enters strong with Cinderella. This is the first film of the series that legitimately feels like it was made for children. We’ve got animals with various levels of personality and anthropomorphism, helpfully delineated by the addition of tiny clothing. We’ve got an evil step-family with great character design. And most importantly we have a grown woman who is neither a push over nor an entitled monster who just wants to spend a night outside dancing in a pretty dress.

We’re going deep on one of the most unsettling movies of all time - Pinocchio. A movie full of horny animals, butts, and human trafficking, we never would have thought we would want to screen a Disney animated film from the 40s before showing it to a kid, but this thing is bonkers and more than a little frightening. This week we watch Bong Joon-Ho’s dystopian masterpiece – no not that one, the other one – Snowpiercer. Chris Evans doesn’t want to be a hero, and can he truly be if he know what people taste like? We argue yes, when the villain is capitalism, any man can be a hero. Tilda Swinton puts in a grounded and naturalistic performance (her words) and Allison Pill is just a delight while Kang-ho Song plays his normal hilarious druggie. Bong has an innate ability to entertain and make you laugh while spotlighting the horrors of society. Lily Taylor is trying very hard to not kill her kids in the first film of the Conjuring Universe – aptly named the Conjuring. Ed and Lorraine Warren – characters we are not going to conflate with their real-world counterparts – are enlisted to help a family of seven with a demon problem. Think Poltergeist but replace a haunted closet with a haunted mom and Zelda Rubenstein with Vera Farmiga. Cops go into a tenement building and have to fight their way out facing off against an army of desperate people and unhinged gangsters. Once we get in, the only way out is through. This week we watched Liam Neeson pick up his mantle of action hero in 2008s Taken. It’s surprisingly paced and full of short effective fights that make up a satisfying action movie. Maggie Grace is a believable, if too resilient teen, and Famke Jansen is a terrible co-parent, rounding out a typical American family facing a sex-trafficking threat. We watched the best superhero movie – or at least top 3 – this week with the second film in Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, The Dark Knight. Incredible cast, unbelievable performances, great writing, and insane effects and set pieces all come together to form a tour-de-force that we could watch over and over again, maybe even just to hear Michael Caine tell us about rubies the size of a tangerine. Or to watch that magic trick where the Joker makes a pencil disappear. Or the best heist film ever in the first 10 minutes. Or an 18-wheeler doing a somersault. You know it’s gonna be a rough one when Mark Walhberg is the voice of reason even as he yells every line. We watch the epitome of infiltration this week with Martin Scorsese’s The Departed. DiCaprio is the good guy, Damon is the bad guy, Martin Sheen doesn’t deserve what he gets and Vera Farmiga, unfortunately, gets stuck in the “woman who is criminally terrible at her job” trope. Is it twisty? Yup. But is it confusing? Nope. In addition to the stress of possible discovery and all of the shooting, thrill comes through when a 2 ½ hour movie never feels it.

Joel Schumacher directs the adaptation of a John Grisham novel that tells the story of a white lawyer representing a black man and all of the machinations that go on around them. Free Palestine   One of the most unspoiled movies of all time, we watched When a Stranger Calls from 1979. If you have heard of this movie but haven’t seen it, it’s likely that you are only privy to the first 20 minutes of the film. It’s tense, but it gets wild after we leave the house from which the call is coming. Carol Kane shows off her lungs. A husband listens to and believes his wife. An ex-cop goes rogue. And Colleen Dewhurst just tries to get a damn drink. All of them circle a very sick, very disturbed man played in an unnervingly sympathetic way. We have an excellent villain and a compelling leading lady and some very cool – and yes thrilling – set pieces. If only our protagonist wasn’t such a dumb dummy.

We have seen a number of Hitchcock films up to this point and have quite a few left, but this feels like a pivot point. Amity comes to this fresh with a sixty year head start and really has some hang ups – largely around a tarnished love of Jimmy Stewart and the ongoing insistence by Hollywood that beautiful women aren’t beautiful. This week we revisit Hitchcock for the second time (but certainly not the last) with Dial M for Murder. Grace Kelly is effervescent and remarkably relatable and the machinations around her will make you mad on her behalf. For 1954, we are in a surprisingly not slut-shamey world where given a bot of conversation, everything could have come up thruple, but instead we have a trophy husband who refuses to give up the life to which he has become accustomed and the fallout around his murderous decisions.

Dustin Hoffman is on the run this week in 1976’s Marathon Man. We return to William Goldman, never disappointing, for this one as he adapted his own novel. And this thing is a rocket from beginning to end! Does it make perfect sense? Absolutely not! Did Lemuel have to tell Amity 20 minutes in that Roy Scheider and Dustin Hoffman were brothers? Yes! Sean Connery is Bond, James Bond this week as we watched Goldfinger from 1964. Not too rapey and also not too good at being a spy, Sean Connery slinks his way through this film in white dinner jackets, terrycloth onsies and a tan and manages to save the day, through no fault of his own. This week things are popping off! We watched episode 7 of 2021’s Chapelwaite and it’s getting tense at the estate. Realities are setting in that all of our male characters have made terrible mistakes. While we have acknowledged Rebecca’s lies and Ms. Cloris’ deceptions, this week the constable’s overzealousness, the minister’s wandering eye and Charles’ birthright all come to a head as we get a Scooby gang-cum-harpoon crew. It’s a whole new world that we have maybe seen before! We are embarking on the 2021 adaptation of “Jerusalem’s Lot” called Chapelwaite. Starring Adrien Brody and Emily Hampshire and set over a hundred years before the versions of Salems’ Lot we have already visited, this is a rich and moody and gasp plotty gothic horror. So far its mostly questions and intros but we have high hopes. Charles Boone has lost his wife but gained a house and a mill, so he moves his family to the town of Preachers’ Corners, Maine, where no one wants them except the journalist turned nanny Rebecca Morgan. They aren’t welcome, but they are protected. And that’s what we know. Here we are at the end – episode 8 of 2021’s Lisey’s Story – and if you thought we were clear of the child abuse, I have bad news for you. Lisey and Jim are in Booya Moon and it’s time for him to make his final stand – by declaring his importance to a people monster, something that appears to be a personification pain. It doesn’t go well, and Booya Moon can’t even be useful with hiding the body.  Lisey returns to her sisters and disposes of a body before going to find her story. Larry, Rita, Nadine and Lloyd are introduced in increasingly gory scenes. An indecent proposal is made. Rats should be first billed in the credits, but get short shrift and Harold gets one scene that doesn’t make us instantly uncomfortable. Entering the third year of our Stephen King coverage, we get into the creepy center of 2020’s The Outsider. Holly has some news to share and it’s quite a doozy. Ralph backslides into the 1800s in his dismissal of his wife, while said wife makes some alarming and not particularly well thought out decisions for Glory’s family. We learn of international boogeymen and give our outsider a name – El Cuco. Half of our intrepid bunch is on board and half are being left behind. We leave this set of episodes on a cliff-hanger the likes of which we haven’t seen in quite a while. We’re hopeful Holly pulls through – at least she has some idea of what might be coming. When you are working out and having lunch with the corpse of your mother, no matter how psychotic you are, it turns out it makes you realize your situation is untenable. It is that realization that leads us into the endgame for Brady and Bill. Brady has a plan or two, Bill thinks he’s at the center, and Josh has a fall from grace. Jake Chambers – a hero with the initials JC – is the only one who can save the tower, which serves as the foundation for the entire multiverse – a compelling set up to the astonishingly short Dark Tower from 2017. 4250 pages are distilled here into a tight 95 minutes that is entertaining and well acted but bears nearly no resemblance to the source material. We talk Dark Tower, fantasy and the distaste for it among horror readers, McConaughey’s vibes, the lies about age Hollywood tells us, and how awesome Jackie Earl Haley is.

This week we discuss a monster masterpiece with a torturous ending, 2007’s The Mist. Wherein during our discussion we absolutely remember Carol and breeze past the fact that a main character in this film is also in the Walking Dead – sorry Laurie Holden, but we hated you in that show. Marcia Gay Harden utters the best line in cinema history and that barely dents the fact that the ending of this film is both divisive and operatic. It’s a lot to cover.

This week we take in the backdoor (failed) pilot, television film Carrie from 2002, starring the deeply creepy Angela Bettis and the barely there Patricia Clarkson. We wanted this to be Hannibal level good as it was penned by Bryan Fuller, but alas, it falls pretty flat. We debate whether this was the best edit, and we compare and contrast to the 1976 version. This isn’t the last time we will be seeing this tale on screen, but so far, it’s ranked last of the Carries. And we miss William Katt’s beautiful locks.

Trucks (1997) King on Screen: All trucks great and small

Come with us to Lunar, Nevada, the smallest town that ever incorporated as we watch as it’s trucks are taken over by, well, it’s unclear. This week we watched Trucks, the second adaptation of the short story, “Trucks” which is powered by less cocaine and more exposition. But the exposition of what is currently happening is non-existent. Was it aliens? Was it chemicals? Was it early cell phone coverage? The culprit remains elusive, but at least this movie makes you care about it’s characters.

This week sees our first second adaptation with the ABC miniseries of The Shining. We will watch other second-attempts but we’ll never forget our first. The three-episode arc allows for us to get settled in the Stanley hotel, I mean the Overlook, and we get glimpses of real people before the hotel gets mean. We do some comparisons, but try to look at this as its own thing, down to that funky bandleader. And we both consider this our dream job, even after the warning this and its predecessor have given to us.

Rewatching the TNT modern classic, Lemuel and Amity watched The Shawshank Redemption in a new and novel way – with forethought from beginning to end. Sometimes Stephen King writes a damn fine drama and this is one of those times. Also helpful, nary a woman to be seen, so nary a female character to mess up. We discuss the pitfalls of marketing and what makes a cult classic.

If you haven’t watched this in a while – or if you haven’t seen the entire thing from the beginning, do yourself a favor, turn on TNT, it’s probably on sometime in the next 48 hours – watch it all the way through and then listen in.

This week we look deep into Timothy Hutton’s blue, blue eyes and ask, what do the sparrows mean, though? The confusion runs deep as we watched the Dark Half and many questions are asked while none are really answered. Who is this doppelgänger – George Stark? Alexis Machine? Actual Twin? Are sparrows on earth as the devil’s eyeballs? Is it possible for makeup to get better as it gets worse? When did college classes become a cliché?

And time travel with about four minutes of thought put into it. Amity and Lemuel check out the original adaptation of Pet Sematary. Fred Gwynne really delivers that Maine accent and the leading lady is reliably less than she could have been.
