In 1975 and 1976 retired police chief George Wheeler had two extraordinary UFO sightings. He was not alone in this, as witnesses came out of the woodwork and corroborated his story in remarkable detail. In this episode of the Saucer Life, we’ll look at these sightings and the UFO culture that grew up around them in this tiny Wisconsin town.

The Alien Abduction Survival Guide by Michelle LaVigne is... not entirely what it sounds like. While there are several tips for coping with one's abduction experiences, the most interesting aspect of the book is the manner in which the author positions herself within the shared experiences of humans and their alien mentors.

As we wrap up our deep dive into the third issue of (California) UFO Magazine, we find ourselves knee-deep in tales of UFO talk at the Whole Life Expo. Then, we're off to the wilderness where we make contact with the elusive families of Space Sasquatches.

Next, we take a philosophical detour with a mind-bending column by the one and only Terrence McKenna. And then, drumroll, please, we look at a review of Strieber's "Communion". which at the time was so fresh off the presses, you could practically smell the ink. And finally, we explore the dolphin-alien connection, complete with dolphin channelling.

It’s back to the early days of UFO Magazine or (California UFO Magazine) for a fairly lighthearted romp through a publication that did its best to provide insight into all aspects of the UFO culture of the time, much to the chagrin of the buttoned-up nuts-and-bolts time. That tension, between “scientific” and “new age” approaches is very much apparent in this issue!

It’s time for the first part of our our annual(ish) road trip adventure. As usual, these are fairly light and breezy, perfect for a bright spring day. Or something.

This year, I went down to Missouri on the trail of Buck Nelson, the Piedmont UFO sightings, the mysterious happenings in the “Marley Woods” area, and the alleged Cape Girardeau UFO crash. In this first part, I'll be covering my search for some of the more elusive aspects of Buck Nelson's story!

In this episode, we’re going to look at “Flying Saucers and the Father’s Plan” by Laura Munro. This is an interesting book; it’s part Contactee tale and part commentary on other Contactees (which was more rare than one might expect). It was published by Gray Barker’s Saucerian Press and, thanks to Barker’s record keeping, we have some interesting insights into the book’s development as well.

The Rockefeller family was a frequent target of conspiracy theory in the United States. One of their detractors was Peter Beter, a conspiracy theorist whose frequently outlandish conspiracy theories also targeted the Federal Reserve system and the Soviet Union. He spread his message through recorded messages distributed on cassette tape to subscribers, released monthly from 1975 to 1982. Beter claimed that the Soviets had planted short range nuclear missiles just off the coast of the United States and that the US and USSR had fought an orbital conflict with space-based weapons which he called the “Battle of the Harvest Moon.” It was, however, Beter’s tales of assassinated and replaced political figures that remain his most outlandish legacy.

Speaking of interesting but fundamentally dull flying saucer films, in this installment of The Saucer Afterlife, I spend a few minutes on The Flying Saucer Mystery. This is a 1952 short film (which is actually an extended version of one that came out in 1950) that features August Roberts (for 4 seconds), Frank Scully (who seems like a hoot), and Donald Keyhoe (who is whatever the opposite of a hoot might be).

Storm Hangar 18!

Not to be topical or anything, but all during the summer of 2019 we were getting geared up to Storm Area 51--and that's great and all, but I thought that Hangar 18 at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton needed some love, so here we are. In this episode, we examine the history of the notion that there's a place the government takes saucer debris, the emergence of "Hangar 18" itself as an idea, and the ways this has poked through in various parts of the saucer culture over the past few decades.

I spoke about the "Storm Area 51" nonsense on NPR's "It's Been a Minute" a couple months ago. You can hear a bit more about the Aztec crash waaaaay back in Bonus Encounter 1.

Two Years!
