He gets to drive all kinds of cool and interesting cars as well as fettle his own projects. We start out serious with the idea of putting anti-impaired driving interlocks in all cars but then we lighten it up with switching gears (not easy in Dawn's Mercedes, apparently), then shift into which country's cars are the most difficult to repair. Tim grew extra elbows to get to some spark plugs, while Ben contrasts the ease of working on different Lotuses. Misty relates it to her sewing machines, and Tim reels us all back in with a trivia question that relates boring industrial theory to cars.

Formula SAE: Learn to Be Race Team Member

Do All Engineers Have Talking Frogs?

The gang interviews Steven Tubbs from Kennesaw University's Formula SAE Team, a co-ed team of students who secure funding for, engineer, design, build, and race a small formula style car in intercollegiate competition. We find out what roles there are for team members getting degrees in engineering, whether is is mechanical, aerospace, electronic or materials, as well as those getting degrees in accounting, business, marketing and management. Graduates who participate in Formula SAE strengthen their skill set and, much like an internship, can help blaze a path to getting a job in their field of choice, which can be anything from working for auto manufacturers, or even for professional race teams in Formula 1, IndyCar, IMSA and NASCAR, plus work in non-automotive fields. We find out how to test race car aerodynamics using a Ford F350, when and when not to use A.I., and how the team members gain skills in team building, leadership training and giving presentations. Unfortunately, Trivia Czar Tim couldn't join this episode as he was fulfilling his Papal Nuncio duties.

In this episode, we find out why tires used to be white and why restaurants have Michelin stars. In other tire topics, Tim remembers the F1 tire wars of the early 2000's and how it led to the US Farce 1 GP of 2005. We contemplate the long lead times of getting repair parts for newer cars from a dealer. Ben, on the other hand, can get all of the parts for his 1972 Lotus in 3 days. Suzanne has issues with her Jeep's aftermarket fuel injection system. Suzanne is trying to enter the all women's Rebel Rally in California next year. Mickey is torn between getting a 2017 MX5 or Fiat 124 Spider; or maybe a Hemi Charger / Challenger. Misty claims she can get a sewing loom into her MX5, but is that why she looks like she just got back from a killing spree?

Drive Like a Gazelle

We meet Susanne, who has recently competed in the 2023 Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles. This is an ISO 14001 certified rally raid in which all of the drivers and navigators are women. They compete to drive on or off-road to multiple way points each day in the shortest distance possible, without using GPS. We find out what vehicles are the most popular to use and where to find them, how to communicate where few people speak English, how to navigate without GPS, how much does this cost and how does one get started in learning how to drive in this kind of event? Dawn had a slight misunderstanding, so showing her amazing ability to pivot, gives us an off the cuff Porsche flavored spy/romance cliffhanger begining with a high school reunion based in Europe. Mickey wrestled for a WHOLE 36 hours to deliver a Miami to LA race with a very special twist. Misty draws on her love for Egypt, Brendan Fraser, and The Mummy for an epic drive from Europe to Cairo with a brief segue into why The Mummy is a true love story for the ages, followed up with a book review about women and data bias.

Dave is shocked to find that Pep Boys no longer carries fuses, or any other car parts besides tires & batteries. Maybe this is what is making him want to turn his Jeep into a U-Boat. Dawn is threatened by the over-aggressive driving of others on the interstate and notes that the number of traffic deaths has gone up recently. Mickey grinds his gears after suffering some light abuse and the gang ponders whether there should be a nanny device for high beam restriction. Driving My Dream

This week, Dave celebrates No Pants Day, Misty brings our Grand Trivia Auto question, and Ben introduces Paul Harmon, proud (2nd)owner of a Million (plus) Mile Mercedes 240D.

Paul waxes poetic about his 4 cylinder, 4-speed manual transmission 1981 Mercedes 2401D, how many 240Ds were produced in Germany for the US market (480,000+!), buying a transmission just for one small gear, how many miles a year he’s averaged (40,000), and just how many oil changes it takes to get to a million miles.

Then Dave blames Misty for all the math that suddenly popped up. Misty vigorously denies any involvement due to her extreme allergy to mathematics.

Dave takes over ‘Dawn on the Autobahn’ as Dawn takes a well-deserved break, and we talk pickup trucks. Concepts and prototypes that never make production just really grinds Mickey’s gear. Especially when you compare the ones that DO make it versus the ones that don’t. We have a moment of silence for the prototypes that are no longer with us, and appreciate the ones that have survived, while Misty invokes the Geneva Conventions.

Czars, Cars, and Summer Camp with Loxley

Loxley Brown joins us to talk about Athena Racing, a nonprofit dedicated to opening doors for young women into the transportation industry, we talk about Trivia Czars, favorite movies about cars, rescuing cars displayed without their consent, and Dave's probably possessed Jeep.

First up is a straw poll on electing Tim as our Trivia Czar and how we all rode the struggle bus to either narrow down or fill a top 5 list of our favorite movies about cars. With Ben as the voice of reason, we all shared one from our list, which included Smoke Signals, The Gumball Rally, Risky Business, It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World, and Herbie The Love Bug. Dawn realized she cared more about the cars being damaged than the people in her choices.

Ben Takes A Moment to continue our theme of cars in movies, touching on The Spy Who Loved Me, his previous job as security for a TV production (he touched the cars), and the virtual fleet of cars destroyed in TV and movie classics. We discuss rescuing the Miami Vice Testarossa from a Florida flea market while Misty offers to coordinate bail for the group stateside. Many disclaimers followed. We also pondered a road trip to a car museum in Miami with a truly massive James Bond transportation collection and talked about some poor marketing choices.

Instead of news, Misty tried to answer Dave’s conundrum about his 2008 Jeep Wrangler X horn issues. The first conclusion was that Dave needed to call a priest (we’re moving up from nuns in this episode), another possible issue was the plastic housing expanding in the heat, or Dave has a moisture problem. In the end, Misty decided that Dave has a 1 in a 7 billion problem or maybe it’s just a relay. And yes, Mickey, there are Episcopalian Nuns.

Loxley Brown, head of Athena Racing, joins us to talk about her nonprofit efforts to open doors for young women across the globe into careers in the transportation industry. Athena Racing is dedicated to giving young women the knowledge and tools to follow their dreams into any segment of the transportation via summer camps, workshops, and monthly projects.
