It's "This Exonian Life." I'm Nick Song. Each episode, we bring you the stories heard on and around Exeter's campus. We believe that everyone (yes, even you!) has a story to tell. The stories we put out range from interviews with accomplished assembly speakers, to the conversations held in a friend's dorm room in the middle of the night.

Episode Notes

It's a Special Graduation Special!!!

As the Class of 2018 (my year) is set to matriculate, so is the Academy's 15th Principal Instructor, Lisa MacFarlane. Before we journeyed towards greener pastures, I sat down with Principal MacFarlane (known as PMAC around campus). We discussed her childhood growing up around the world as a Third Culture Kid, being apart of the first graduating class of girls at Andover, and how her interest in American Studies led her to the red-bricked buildings of PEA.

Thank you so much to Principal MacFarlane for her service to the school. I cannot imagine having another headmaster for my three years.

Congratulations to the Class of '18 for graduating! I didn't think we'd make it this far, but here we are now.

Episode 5 // You Know How that Nick Go

This TEL episode is all about yours truly, Nick Song 18.

Now I know what you're some of you are thinking: you may say I'm being "self-absorbed," or "ego-tistical," or even just call it "actually kinda sad." And yeah you're probably all right, but I think it's kind of a dope idea.

Over the summer, I reached out to some of my friends and asked them to send me a voice memo. I asked them to tell the story that first pops into their head when they hear the name "Nick Song." The audio you're hearing has been spliced together from the recordings they sent me.

Thank you so much to Jasmine Lee '18, Ori Evans '18, Kyra Dawkins '16, Louisa Bartkovich '18, Emma "D-Lion" Paltrow '18, Stephen Price '17, and the English teacher who pushed me to actually start making these podcasts, Ms. Eimer Page. There's about a dozen more tapes I didn't end up using from other people who took time out of their day to record them, so thanks so much to them as well.

Also thank you to every other person I'm fortunate enough to call a friend. This podcast would be a hundred times longer if I recorded every single one of you out there.

Episode 4 // Join Wentworth and See the World: Selective Service and Exeter

This episode is a little bit different than the ones in the past. We're going to be tackling the issue of Selective Service, or registering for the draft.

All eligible male citizens of the US are required to register with Selective Service once they turn 18. I along with many of the other Seniors and P.G's in Wentworth Hall have recently turned that age, yet it seems like most of the guys don't know they have to register. Nor are they aware of the reprecussions which they may face if they fail to register.

In our episode about the Selective Service System, we investigate what it really is, why it exists, and whether it should exist.

This episode was produced as a final project for History 550 | Politics and Public Policy. Thanks to Mr. Jordan and the rest of D format for a lit term.

Episode 3 // Ranting in Urdu

On this episode of TEL, we break through the Exeter bubble and turn our gaze to the east.

Born in Houston, Nader Babar '18 has lived in Pakistan all his life. He returned to the states a little over a year ago when he started at Exeter in his Junior year. We talk about his experience as both a citizen of the US and Pakistan as well as the societal differences between the two. Nader and I discuss how his self-identity between the two worlds and how the two societies view him. In addition, Nader explains and helps me to understand arranged marriages as well as his love for the guitar.

Episode 2 // 'Gesso' with a G

On this episode we begin our look into Exeter students: the "future leaders of the world!" (whatever that means...)

Grace Huang '18 is an award winning artist and fashion designer with her work having been displayed in numerous galleries and shows across the US. I had the pleasure to talk with her in December of last year to talk about growing up in Houston, the different roles art plays on our lives, and the ever-growing pile of art in her garage!

On this first episode of "This Exonian Life," we have brothers Kai and Anders Carlson-Wee. Their documentary film, Riding the Highline, chronicles a freight-hopping trip the two took in 2015 from Minnesota to the Cascade Mountains. They sat down to talk with us in February to talk about their love of in-line skating, how they first began writing poetry, tips and tricks they shared about freight-hopping, and their disastrous first attempt at making the film!
