Creatives' 8 Year Anniversary - April '26

In this episode, Scott is joined by co-host and producer of the podcast Jarrett Moses. The tandem uses the April 7th Creatives’ Pier event as a launch point to do a “deep dive” into Creatives’ Philly’s eight-year journey as a platform. The April 7th open mic event doubled as Scott’s birthday and the anniversary of Creatives’ events. Jarrett runs sound/production for all of our Creatives’ events.

The episode kicks off with some context for why the episode is going to take a different turn than usual. In the first fifteen minutes, Scott gives an overview of the Creatives’ journey with statistics and a breakdown of four distinct chapters in the story.

Jarrett and Scott spend the bulk of the episode time-lining the narrative and seeing how each decision they made along the journey was directly related to outside factors they couldn’t control. Towards the end of the episode, both hosts talk about what could have been different, lessons they’ve learned, and gratitudes they have for not giving up. Scott ends with a plea for new listeners to partner with Ripe Creatives so they can continue to produce the open mic events into the future. We hope you enjoy this one.

This episode continues with Diomer sharing about his desire to involve more friends in his set and ultimately how that included inviting Craig Watson to come perform as well. Throughout the conversation, Diomer and Craig share specific details about people they met before and after performing. The performance conversation centers mostly on the Friday night set.

At the very end of the episode, the whole cast talks about the future of AgapeFest and the hopes/dreams for what’s ahead in partnership with Ripe Creatives.

Ignite - October '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Diomer, Eves, and first-time guest Jason Weatherbe to talk about the Ignite Youth Conference hosted by NJUMC in Wildwood, NJ from September 29th to October 1st, 2023.

The conference featured Ripe Artists Diomer, Eves, and Aable for the event’s Friday night concert. Jason served as the team’s drummer alongside DJ Ant G who served as the team’s MD. Ant also served as the DJ while Scott joined as the emcee for the rest of the conference weekend as well.

The episode begins with giving the backstory of how Ripe was booked for the gig and how each of the folks featured on the podcast felt going into the experience. The team shares quite a bit about what it was like arriving at Wildwood’s convention center and seeing the production level of the conference.

Towards the second half of the episode, we talk mostly about the first night’s concert and the ways we navigated some of the challenges of the overlapping-set design. There’s a whole lot of shoutouts and conversation about overcoming different hurdles throughout the first night and what some of the key moments created for the students who were there.

As we wrap up the episode the squad shares about getting the opportunity to do a second set on Saturday and why we focus so much on engaging students off the stage at these kinds of events. We hope you enjoy the episode!

Creatives' Co-Bill ft. Rashid Saint-Fleur - October '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett, and Rashid Saint-Fleur to talk about the Creatives’ Concert Co-Bill event that featured Seraiah Nicole and Rashid. The event was hosted at The Story Factory PHL on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023.

The episode begins with telling the backstory of the original Co-Bill Concert plan with Rashid Saint-Fleur and Antoine Bradford having to be postponed. We share some of the details of how the team landed on a Co-Bill with Rashid and Seraiah Nicole for October instead. The conversation includes some of the backstory of Ripe’s relationship with Seraiah in particular and how the “switch-up” ultimately gave Rashid more time to find the sound he wanted to present at his concert.

Towards the second half of the episode, we talk mostly about the day of the event including both Rashid's set and Seraiah's set as well. The trio chats about ways Rashid grew from the experience and the impact it made on him and the audience.

As we’re wrapping up the episode, Rashid shares about his journey over the past couple of years as a singer-songwriter and the wrestle he’s had in writing the songs that he releases. We hope you enjoy this episode!

WorshipFest - September '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett Moses, Greg Snow, and Jonathan Curtis to talk about our second annual WorshipFest. The squad also gets a mini cameo from Rob Morales who adds to the conversation from his perspective as an attendee. The festival took place on Saturday, September 23rd, 2023 on site at Carson Simpson Farm Christian Camp where Jonathan serves as the site director.

The episode begins with us sharing about the team’s decision to bring WorshipFest back in 2023 after the success of 2022. The squad talks about some of the major changes going into year two with a special emphasis on the second stage vision which was hosted by Greg Snow.

The middle of the episode focuses on each of the sets. All of the sets were performed by Ripe artists and local worship teams including Davisville Church, CityReach Worship, and E Daniels. The festival was closed by our very own Ripe Worship team.

Throughout the episode, each of the guests talks a lot about the weather and how it impacted the festival tremendously throughout the day. WorshipFest certainly wasn’t an easy task in light of the hurdles, but throughout our conversation, we centered on the goodness of God by helping the team overcome the challenges as they came.

We wrap up by showing love to Pastor Terry Davis from Philadelphia Gospel Mission and alluding to what’s ahead for WorshipFest as a vision in the future. We hope you enjoy!

Back in Brickyard - September '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett, a returner from Season 1 Luke Billman, and first-time guest Allison Billman to talk about the “Back in Brickyard” block party outreach concert. The event featured nearly a dozen artists from both inside and outside of the Ripe community and took place on Friday, September 1st, 2023 at Shores of Grace. Luke & Allison lead Shores of Grace which serves the local community of Germantown in Philadelphia.

We begin the conversation by talking mainly about everything that led up to running the block party back for our second year in a row. The entire episode flows together nicely as each person shares their perspective about the event and the big picture “ministry philosophy” for reaching people locally through the arts.

There are quite a few laughs throughout the episode as we talk about Luke being sick and still trying to help and different artist sets that impacted people.

The most significant takeaway focused on how the artists built meaningful connections with the audience off the stage. We wrap up the episode focused on why Ripe Creatives & Shores of Grace are such a good fit to partner together to reach people.

XTEND Conference - August '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Aable and first-time guests Joseph Novales and Anh Thai to discuss the Xtend Conference which took place on Saturday, August 12th, 2023 at The MET Philly. Nearly a dozen people in our Ripe Creatives community had the chance to serve at Xtend this year.

The Xtend Conference was launched by CityReach Church 3 years ago. Since then it has grown to include nearly one hundred regional churches and hosts thousands of youth for the one-day conference annually. The first part of the episode centers on some of the history of the conference.

The middle chunk of the episode is spent on preparations for the conference made by Aable as one of the artists, Jo/Anh with CityReach Worship and the overall planning team. We chat quite a bit about what led to choosing Aable as one of the artists to perform on the lineup and how decisions were made to include Elevation Rhythm and UpperRoom.

In the final third of the episode, we talk about the day of the conference primarily focusing on Aable’s set and CityReach Worship’s set respectively. Throughout the convo, Jo and Anh share about overcoming challenges throughout the day. As we wrap up the episode the four center on the value of Xtend for the region and also how the “big stuff” should center and challenge us to live out our faith daily in the mundane as well.

FOF Fest - June '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett, Doc Hero, and first-time guest Shawn Prez to talk about FOF Fest. The event, which featured a handful of Ripe artists and was an overall collaboration between FOF and Ripe Creatives, took place on Friday, June 2nd, 2023 at The Story Factory Philly.

The episode begins by giving a history lesson about “FOF Fest” formally known as “Mayhem” as one of the longest-running Christian Hip-Hop platforms in the city of Philadelphia. The guys share about what led to resurrecting the festival after it hadn’t been produced since 2019.

The conversation includes a lot about the planning and how many moving parts are involved in throwing an event at this scale. As we get into the middle of the episode, we center on the actual run of show and share about each of the ten artist sets throughout the festival.

As we wrap up the episode we share some of our overall takeaways and some hopes we share for future events. Per usual there’s plenty of conversation about what it means to “partner well” and why trust is imperative when building something together.

Ripe Retreat - May '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett and first-time guest Rafaiel Acera to talk about our first-ever overnight “Ripe Retreat.” The retreat took place on-site at Carson Simpson Farm Christian Camp from Friday, May 12th through Saturday, May 13th.

This episode is unique to the “Time is Ripe” podcast — in that, we’re talking about something we created to build up our own community in tangible ways — rather than an out-facing event to serve others.

At the beginning of the episode, Raf shares about his long-term investment in Ripe Creatives over the years. As we dive into the actual retreat story, we camp out in Session 1 from Friday night for a while. The conversation in Session 1 focused on the history of Ripe shared by Ripe Creation founder, Dan Jaffe, and Ripe Creatives founder, Scott Smith.

Throughout the conversation we share the goals of the retreat, some of the challenges we faced, and specific outcomes that came from it.

Towards the final third of the episode, we spend time talking about how “no” is sometimes really just a “not yet.” We also laugh quite a bit throughout the episode about the way Raf’s brain works and his affection for being a “dream crusher.” We hope you enjoy!

Episode Notes

In this episode Scott is joined by Greg Snow, AVG, and first-time guest Sergine Citerme to talk about the 2 Lines Open Mic and more specifically the April 14th event that featured Sergine. 2 Lines is a Philly-based spoken word open mic event hosted and ran by a couple of the Ripe Poets in our community every second Friday of the month.

The episode begins with giving context for 2 Lines as a whole and running through some of the previous features from November 2022 leading up to the April event that featured Sergine. A good chunk of the conversation early on centers on the culture and atmosphere of 2 Lines that make it one of the city’s safest spaces for veteran performers & first-timers alike.

We shift gears midway to chat with Sergine about her featured set on April 14th and how God divinely orchestrated the night from start to finish. Sergine shares about her “seed scattering” perspective as a spoken word artist who desires to share truth with every audience she engages.

Toward the end of the episode, we share stories about specific people at the event who were impacted. We also have a deep-dive discussion about the value of 3rd space ministry environments to engage people who have yet to place their faith in Jesus. It’s a beautiful episode all around and we hope you enjoy.

Ripe Takeover PSU Abington - March '23

In this episode, Scott is joined by Jarrett, Estee, AVG, and Rashid Saint-Fleur to talk about the “Ripe Takeover” concert we hosted at Penn State Abington on Friday, March 31st. The event was a massive joint effort including 18 different people within Ripe Creatives. The opportunity was made possible through partnering with the ISFB of PSU Abington and the ACF college ministry group which falls under the leadership of CCO.

The episode begins with Rashid sharing about his time as a student at PSU Abington and the role of his campus minister, Ray Weisen, in helping to give vision to the idea of doing a Ripe Creatives concert on campus.

We shift gears to hear from Estee about building out the house band team for the event and giving a ton of love to Jason Weatherbe specifically who stepped up to drum. From there we chat with Jarrett about the overall set-up and bringing in one of his friends to help with the day of the show on the tech side.

Towards the middle of the conversation we go through each of the 8 Artist sets one by one: giving love to each of the Ripe Music Artists and Ripe Poets who performed. We center a bit on AVG’s set and also things he saw relating to the other Ripe Poetry sets as well.

Toward the end of the episode, we share about some of the outcomes from the event including words shared by specific students to our team. Scott wraps it all up with some perspective about how to best navigate throwing a Jesus-centered/focused event while maintaining partnerships and relationships within a collegiate environment like PSU. It was a great episode & we hope you enjoy!

London Serve - July '22

In this episode, Scott is joined by Emily and first-timer Andre (Junito) to talk about the Ripe squad’s trip to London, Ontario in July 2022. An eleven-person team ventured to Canada for a week to lead worship, facilitate programming and serve with teenagers during “London Serve.”

The episode begins with a deep dive into how we were booked for the opportunity in the first place and subsequently Junito’s invitation to be a part of it all. Afterward, we delve into stories about individual students and leaders we interacted with during the trip. We use the framework of the flow of the week to help pace the episode throughout.
