But could that really be the intention of an aggressive, prolonged interrogation of young people that asks them if anyone has fondled their genitals lately and equates reductions in gender dysphoria with curing transness?

Welcome back to Tranzmission’s series It’s A Man’s World. This is Part Three: Bodies, Belonging, and Re-imagining Masculinity.

In our last It's A Man's World episode, Power, Safety, and Conflict, we explored what it means to navigate risk, hierarchy, and survival inside men’s spaces — the constant calculations around visibility, safety, and when to speak up or stay quiet. Today, we’re taking that conversation deeper, into the body, into belonging, and into the question of what masculinity actually becomes once you’re living inside it.

Because entering men’s spaces doesn’t just change how others see you — it changes how you move, how your body is read, how you relate to yourself, and where you’re allowed to belong. From locker rooms and gyms, to workplaces, dating, and everyday public life, masculinity is experienced not just socially, but physically and emotionally.

For trans men and trans-masculine people, this often means navigating new expectations around strength, size, voice, emotion, and desirability — while also carrying histories, identities, and ways of being that don’t always fit narrow ideas of the “Aussie bloke.”

In this episode, we’re exploring what it feels like to inhabit masculinity in the body, how belonging is negotiated and sometimes withheld, and how trans-masculine experiences open up space to re-imagine masculinity beyond dominance, silence, and control.

Welcome back to Tranzmission’s series It’s A Man’s World. This is Part Two: Power, Safety, and Conflict.

In the first episode of this Tranzmission series we discussed; First Encounters, Learning the Rules, and Early Negotiations of Masculinity titled - Entering A Man’s World Today we’re digging into what happens after you’ve entered men’s spaces — when the unspoken rules become clearer, power dynamics start to show themselves, and questions of safety, dominance, and belonging become unavoidable.

Men’s spaces — whether it’s a worksite, a footy club, a pub, a gym, or online forums — aren’t just social environments. They’re shaped by hierarchies, competition, silence, bravado, and sometimes aggression. For trans men and trans-masculine people, navigating these dynamics can mean constantly assessing risk, managing how visible or invisible you can afford to be, and deciding when to speak up, blend in, or push back.

In this episode, we’re focusing on lived experiences of negotiating power, setting boundaries, responding to conflict, and staying safe — physically, emotionally, and socially — while moving through masculinity in so-called Australia.

Hosted by Ez (he/him) joined Elliott (he/him). As always, we’re not speaking for all trans men, trans-masculine people, or cis men. This series is about our experiences — how we navigate, survive, challenge, and deconstruct masculinity in real time.

Overall, it's not all bad, and rumours of a Cass 2.0 appear to have been exaggerated, but it sure could be better.

Welcome to a Tranzmission series - It’s A Man’s World. In this episode, the first part of a three part series Ez (he/him) and Elliott (he/him) talk about masculinity, men’s spaces, and what it’s like to navigate them as a transgender man or trans‑masculine person in so-called Australia, whether that’s a footy club, a worksite, a pub, a gym, or an online forum. These spaces are shaped by unspoken rules about who belongs, how you should behave, and what kind of man you’re allowed to be.

For trans men and trans‑masculine people, entering these spaces can bring relief, affirmation, tension, and sometimes very real risk. This is the first episode in a series that centres on lived experiences focusing on First Encounters, Learning the Rules, and Early Negotiations of Masculinity titled - Entering A Man’s World — Ez & Elliott speak about their experiences and as a disclaimer - do NOT speak for all trans men, trans masculine people, or cis men, this series is simply about how they, personally explore, navigate, assimilate, and deconstruct masculinity.

Additionally, we may use, at times language that operates within the binary, however we want to acknowledge that non-binary genders and the full breadth of gender diversity are well within this discussion. We primarily want to focus our conversation around how the "world" operates from binary perspectives, particularly in the mainstream. We want you to know what we know about how masculinity operates when you arrive at it from the outside.

CONTENT WARNING: This episode includes discussion of transphobia, misogyny, sexism, violence, abuse, and experiences of exclusion and discrimination in men’s spaces. We also touch on mental health, safety concerns, and emotional distress. While we avoid graphic detail, some themes may be challenging. Since then a ruling was made in favour of the Family at the Supreme Court and was reinstated by ministerial directive by Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls the same day.   • Using the word ‘detransition’ as if it were a medical term. This term has no strict definition.
  • Utilising the following as medical terms: Desistance, Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria (RODG), Trans Identification/Identified, Natal Males/Females, “Transgender”/“Cisgender”,
  • Utilising the following points: Exponential Increase in Trans Self Identifying, Conflating Gender Dysphoria with Gender Identity Disorder, Refusing to use Pronouns or Referred Name, Interrogating sexuality, kinks, fetishes, and porn use.

CORRECTION: The terms “natal male” and “natal female” are commonly used as a way to avoid using the term “sex assigned at birth”, not to avoid the term “cisgender”. Bette got flustered from talking too fast.

Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), also known as the International Transgender Day of Remembrance, on November 20th is a day to memorialise those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. This episode is a heavy one where Sean, Sev and Ez are in studio together. Every year the Transgender Murder Monitor releases their count the number of trans, non-binary and gender diverse people who’ve been lost to violence in the last year. Counted from the 1st of October 2023 til the 30th of September 2024, the demographics wont surprise you. Overwhelmingly they’re people of colour. Overwhelmingly they are transfeminine. Staggering numbers of them are sex workers, migrants or refugees. This year 350 trans and gender diverse people were murdered. To read the full list click here.

This week Ez and Elliott discuss their time at the Trans Justice Strategy Retreat that was hosted by The Trans Justice Project. Together Ez and Elliott talked about their three days on beautiful Wurundjeri Country, where more than 100 trans campaigners and allies from across the continent came to talk about how we build a powerful movement for trans justice and fight back against the anti-trans lobby.

This retreat was one of the largest ever gatherings of trans justice campaigners, allies, and activists in Australia. There was a great diversity of attendees, including everyone from grassroots activists, to parents of trans kids, clinicians, researchers, and long-time advocates. Representatives from thirty-five organisations attended, from large NGOs like Equality Australia, to smaller trans-positive not-for-profit organisations like Inner City Legal Centre.

About Mt Nadir Meeting on the world wide web, Mt. Nadir formed after bassist Jake Mallet put a call out on the Brisbane Music Scene Facebook group in search of a vocalist and lead guitarist to join himself and drummer Conor Harris. From this the two were joined by front-person Frankie Rosbrook & lead guitarist Jaina Sacranie, and the chemistry amongst the four was instant. Mt. Nadir broke into the Brisbane live scene in 2022 and have been on a roll ever since.

Unconditional description:

Intimate, poetic and de-centering, Unconditional weaves a compelling tapestry of a queer relationship between a man who identifies as gay and a person whose identity evolves during their marriage… starting as “he”, but now transitioning to “she”, which destablises their union, their belief systems, and their politics. Each playwright writes for one character in subjective monologue, duelling monologue and dialogue. Told with humour, insight and absolute honesty, Unconditional re-examines and re-defines the nature of love and what we tell ourselves we would accept.

Amy Sargeant is a Meanjin based visual artist, musician and trans justice advocate. Through installations of sculpture, audio and video Amy’s work responds to her disillusionment with the dysfunctions of the Australian political establishment by reframing the elements of political spectacle. Amy deploys the Situationist method of détournement to destabilise motifs from mainstream politics, activist iconography, symbols and visual cultures. 

Arianna Nixon is an emerging artist from Meanjin whose work explores gender and cultural dissonance. Her work reflects on notions of escapism and dialectical materialism in relation to queer & trans struggles, expressed via proprietary analog video techniques. Nixon’s practice draws on the work of postmodern video artists of the 1970s and 80s, and the impressionists of the century preceding.
