We discuss:

How THX 1138 offers a unique insight into George Lucas's artistic vision and themes that would later be explored in his Star Wars films.

How the movie remains relevant today, as it examines the dehumanizing effects of technology and the struggle against oppressive systems.

While the CGI additions in the 2004 Director's Cut are controversial, the original film remains a stunning example of low-budget, avant-garde science fiction filmmaking.

THX 1138 can be seen as the first part of an informal trilogy, alongside American Graffiti and Star Wars, that explores the idea of leaving a small world to enter a larger one.

We also ask the question: would Star Wars be able to attract A-list talent if there was a new installment every 3 years since 1977?

More than 20 years before Revenge of the Sith would grace our screens, there was STAR WARS 3: FALL OF THE REPUBLIC (From the Adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi). This infamous fan script made the rounds in fandom for years, many believing it to be the actual script for the third prequel film--years before George Lucas ever wrote them. Josh, who himself acquired a copy of this script at a Star Trek convention in the early 1990s, sits down with the author of Fall of the Republic, DR. JOHN L. FLYNN, to discuss how it came to be, what it feels like to be a small part of Star Wars history, and a surprising amount about Angelique Pettyjohn.

STAR WARS has always been at the forefront of technological innovation in filmmaking. Whether it's the prequels pioneering use of CGI, STAR WARS: Episode II - ATTACK OF THE CLONES being the very first feature film to be shot on digital video rather than traditional celluloid film, or the recent use of the Volume AR stage technology on Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian. Josh is joined by two very special guests -- AJ WEDDING and LEO JAMARILLIO of ORBITAL VIRTUAL STUDIOS -- to discuss how Star Wars has always pushed technology forward.

And we speculate what may be behind her newfound willingness to talk about her work in public.

Brandon's podcast is second to none for behind the scenes info on Star Wars featuring original interviews with those involved both behind and in front of the cameras. We had a blast talking about why Marcia Lucas has decided to emerge from the wilderness to tell her side of the story, most recently in her first on-camera interview in the recent Vice documentary ICONS UNEARTHED.

What do I, Josh, have in common with Darth Vader and Mace Windu? It ain't my lightsaber skills, I'll tell you that much. Part of the concept of this podcast was to chart a personal journey through Star Wars, the ways my friends and I grew up with it and how it's intersected and shaped our lives. Our mental health episode was probably the most personal we've gotten so far, and probably paved the way for this week's installment. Fair warning: There's less overt Star Wars talk than usual, but we bring it back. Promise.

I'm honored to be joined by guest MAYA CHUPKOV, whose podcast PROUD STUTTER literally gave me the confidence to keep doing Trash Compactor. We have a fascinating, vulnerable, and hopefully illuminating conversation about hidden challenges we all face and how we make them a part of ourselves.

What would ROGUE ONE have been like it was made right before (or right after) the original STAR WARS in 1977, just like the story itself? Who would have played Jyn Erso? Who would have played Cassian Andor? And who would have directed it? In the tradition of our PREQUELS 1986 episode, we have a blast pondering what may have happened in an alternate timeline. Short version: a pretty awesome flick with an amazing cast that's remembered fondly for its incredible dialog.

We're joined by playwright and all-around creative ANDY BOYD to discuss his play, THE TRADE FEDERATION, OR, LET'S EXPLORE GLOBALIZATION THROUGH THE STAR WARS PREQUELS.

A young experimental playwright named Andy Boyd pitches George Lucas his screenplay for a new Star Wars film. The concept: a prequel to the prequels that fleshes out the economic and social implications of the mysterious Trade Federation. Andy’s script is a full-on Marxist allegory where The Trade Federation is The International Monetary Fund, the Gungans are the Zapatistas, and the Jedi are an international community reluctant to push for any real structural change – the UN, basically. Lucas thinks the movie sounds really boring and unceremoniously kicks Andy out of his office. Then things really get weird.

This episode will be especially up your alley if leftist politics or leftist theater is your thing!

Both this play and more of Andy's work can be found at his website: https://www.andyjboyd.com/

in 1988, Star Wars was dead. It wasn't until a comics writer named Tom Vietch wrote a letter to Lucasfilm to propose a new Star Wars comic project on a whim, and to his surprise, both the company and George Lucas himself were game. For Vietch, there was only one artist who could do the story justice: Cam Kennedy. Despite being delayed years and moving from Marvel to Dark Horse Comics, the resulting DARK EMPIRE became one of the cornerstones of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe and permanently shaped how a certain generation of fans came to think of our beloved characters.

Talking DARK EMPIRE is comics writer/artist RUSS along with JAMES, host of THE SECRET ORIGINS OF MINT CONDITION podcast.

"If you've only seen them this way, then you've never seen them at all!"

In 1997 George Lucas released a special edition of the original Star Wars trilogy with new digital effects and changes both subtle and drastic. Since then, the original unaltered versions of the films have not been made officially available.

But where there's a will, there's a way, and fan efforts to restore and preserve the original films have filled the void. One of the most impressive of these fan restoration projects is 4K77 – a 4K scan of a 70mm Technicolor print – undertaken by a group which goes by the name TEAM NEGATIVE 1.

I am absolutely chuffed to chat with the co-founder of Team Negative 1, Rob, about their efforts to preserve Star Wars.

Filone: No, we're not talking Dave of Disney+ renown. It's a handy Italian term referring to a cascading film categorization system that values trends, traditions, and filmmaker intentions above rigid codification. Think of it as genre and subgenre's more fluid, contextual, and generally cooler cousin. Just the concept we need to fully wrap our heads around the movie we're discussing today.

Author and "remakesploitation" expert ED GLASER, one of TC's most special guest specialists, is on hand to guide JOSH and FREY through the wonderfully topsy-turvy world of the 1982 Star Wars rip-off The Man Who Saves the World—aka TURKISH STAR WARS. And, friends, it is indeed an enchanting world, full of psychedelic yetis, exploding boulder kicks, extremely stolen (but amusingly employed) footage, and one very stylish jacket.

Join us as we groove to a film editing style that feels like it might be a secret cortical gateway to another dimension. in the process, we learn just how this mesmerizing creation came to be. Ed takes us deep with illuminating context and fascinating tidbits, all while providing a rare peek into the unique charms and hidden value of not only this film but others in the same filone—unauthorized remakes and rip-offs from every corner of Earth.

Digital technology allowed George Lucas to realize his true vision for Star Wars...but it did the same for everyone else. The proliferation of affordable desktop video editing software in the late 1990s and early 2000s led to a new form of fan participation: the Fan Edit. And for the last 20 years, fans have made innumerable bespoke versions of the Star Wars films. THE PHANTOM MENACE without Jar Jar? REVENGE OF THE SITH where Padmé survives at the end? A NEW HOPE cut up to play like a black and white Republic serial? There's a fan edit for every taste (and to address every nitpick).

JOSH had the extreme pleasure to chat with one of the best fan editors around, HAL 9000, to discuss what motivates fan editors, how the community rallied around his fan edit of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER, as well as the legal and ethical questions involved with editing someone else's work (and intellectual property). And we ask the all-important question...what does George Lucas think of fan edits?

HAL 9000 can be found posting on the forums at originaltrilogy.com where a polite DM may reward you with a link to his superb prequel and sequel edits, or simply following the download instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fanedits/comments/7g7r9a/hal9000_star_wars_prequel_trilogy_fan_edits_now/

Twenty-six years before it existed, Trash Compactor got its greatest "get." And, friends, blow it we did not. We're confident you'll agree once you finally hear, straight from the source, the answer to the burning question that's been on everyone's lips—is Mark Hamill good at the 1996 PC game Wing Commander IV: The Price of Freedom?

But let's back up for a minute. In the mid-'90s, a 12-year-old JOSH and his similarly prepubescent pal SAM snagged a shockingly lengthy phone interview with Mr. Mark Hamill. (The rest of us at TC assume this may have been the result of a questionable deal Josh or Sam brokered with then-up-and-coming horror trickster Wishmaster. They both remain tight-lipped about it). But what came of this? We'll tell you: a cassette recording of a no-holds-barred encounter between two sixth-graders and a movie legend. And by "no holds barred," we mean a gracious Hamill gives thoughtful answers to literally every question, shakes off a few unintentional low blows only a kid could inflict, makes a timely Sinead O'Connor reference, politely ignores a lot of excited whispering between the interviewers, and clearly considers it his duty to talk to a pair of preteens for a solid 20 minutes. Breaking news: Mark Hamill is a very nice man.

Join us as Josh and Sam react to this unearthed interview for the first time ever. With a little help from their friends/emotional support animals TIM and FREY, they bravely take on the grueling but highly entertaining task of listening to their 12-year-old selves shoot the shit with Luke Skywalker IRL.

(Psst—just kidding about the Wishmaster thing. Didn't mean to scare you. We won't spoil the real story here in the notes, but it involves Z-100, Virgin Megastore, and collect calls. The 90s, baby! Check out some photos from the event that set it all in motion).

JOSH, BRACEY, and JEFF fondly recall what it was like to first lay eyes on the galaxy of diverse artists and creative techniques hidden behind the world onscreen.

From the found sounds of designer Ben Burtt to the mesmerizing sight of a becapped British puppeteer giving Jabba's tail a good ol' thrash backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards, few types of media can be as informative and transformative as a good documentary.

So! Let's dive deep into the "gateway drug for getting into movie & TV production" better known as behind-the-scenes material. (Also discussed—what was more captivating back in the day? A BTS peek in a magazine or in movie form? Feel free to weigh in on our socials below).

We know it's a palace, but how much front door does one Hutt need?

JOSH, RUSS, MICKEY, and FREY learn to accept that RETURN OF THE JEDI was the first Star Wars entry to simply play the greatest hits of what came before. They also learn to not really care. This movie (Jedi) rocks, dag feech it!

Take a seat on that Redwood stump and join us as we sputter in terror and tremble violently at the very thought of Ewoks—their scary teeth, their rageful eyes, their demented, murderous animal/child brains. If you stay awhile, we promise to calm down and ponder a great many other (non-Ewok) things, too, including the marketability of dead action figures, the cunning terroristic strategy of building a new Death Star, and the stunning economic failure of building a new Death Star. Hey—there are worse ways to end a trilogy.
