What is this madness? A Christmas special on a podcast called TRILOGY IN THEORY... missing the third part of the trilogy? That's where we look at the Netflix original LOVE HARD which presents two dating app aficionados finding each other across the country with that annual holiday debate: is DIE HARD a Christmas movie? So we pair that Netflix "content" with a proper film... that proper film being John Frankenheimer's REINDEER GAMES. This may not be the best example of the superior nature of movies designed for theatrical release but it does allow us to pontificate on the conundrum that is Xmas at the Movies and hopefully find a third film to make a TRILOGY IN THEORY! In which the comparisons to AMERICAN PIE never end but at least it wasn't forced into a trilogy on Taye Diggs ALMOST ruining a wedding. That may have been us playing the part of Mr. Diggs by ruining two great slice-of-life comedies from the Best Movie Year Ever of 1999 in THE WOOD and THE BEST MAN. In the former we get a classic hang movie as three young men move onto adulthood and in the latter it's an ensemble of middle-aged friends looking for one last chance to reflect on their youth (for better but mostly worst) and we couldn't be more pleased to dive into that particular universe. Though the fact that ended on Peacock twenty-five years later isn't exactly what we had in mind for The Best Man Cinematic Universe. Enjoy!

We finish our trilogy on masks of doctors (although that comes into question by the end of the episode) by starting with comparing our podcast to FRIENDS or SEINFELD and every other podcast is the 9:30 sitcom that everyone hate watched until ER started. In some regard THE DARK KNIGHT RISES is seen as maybe the misfire of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy... although that is not backed up financially or critically. It's just a vibe! For our latest trilogy we make a sex pact. Not with each other but with three films on films where friends take "the next step" together. Unfortunately for our first entry in AMERICAN PIE it's the likes of Jason Biggs and Chris Klein awkwardly making these moves on the likes of the Alyson Hannigan and Mean Suvari. You can't go wrong with Charlize Theron driving your movie. Unfortunately the prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD does not take the above advice and while we wouldn't dare to advise the great George Miller on his filmmaking sequel choices (BABE: PIG IN THE CITY good and HAPPY FEET TWO not so much) we do hope that Nicholas Hoult can convey his great performance as a likable bald villain into playing Lex Luthor. And there's your one reference to comic book movies that ALL pale in comparison to an action movie that will referenced and spoke of with great reverence decades from now.

Quentin Tarantino uses this chapter of CINEMA SPECULATION to settle some scores with an overzealous hack of a film critic from the 70s, the entire cinematic output of the 80s and lastly with a glancing blow to Mel Gibson in the 90s. On the road with a backtracking Quentin Tarantino...for he apologized for his half of the failed GRINDHOUSE double feature BUT WE DON'T. After suffering through an hour of PLANET TERROR we loved nothing more than taking a ride with Zoë Bell (as The Great Zoë Bell, of course) and the second group of our vengeful ladies. This time their eyes are set on the villainous Stuntman Mike as played by Kurt Russell but we look more to acclaimed filmmakers dealing with failure and how that quest for a perfect filmography limits the conversation on experimentation.

Is this episode our DEATH PROOF? We certainly hope so.

Quentin Tarantino may have a bit of an ego in that massive head of his. And with good reason! He also has lived the life of a critical darling since arriving on the scene with RESERVOIR DOGS.

During the post-PULP FICTION renaissance of John Travolta came him playing yet another charmer in the professional field of crime. Only thing time his character in GET SHORTY shared our love of movies.

Which means all of his crimes can be forgiven. In fact... most everything in this Barry Sonnenfield adaptation of an Elmore Leonard novel can be forgive (even Danny Devito as the world's biggest movie star) because the cast is so damn likable. James Gandolfini as the stunt man with a heart of gold. Delroy Lindo as the nemesis who likes purple suits and pink toilets. And the leading lady of the 90s and currently criminally underutilized Rene Russo.
