What started as a side-project from a home studio in Newcastle, has evolved into a fully-fledged Australian-born ring concierge and jewellery brand, with signature collections, engagement and wedding suites and a custom jewellery design service.

#48 – Mel Histon believes all women can make a difference and she is living proof

My guest today is THE definition of the word go-getter. To share with you in detail Mel Histon’s resume and achievements will be an extended intro to say the least. So before we get into the interview, here’s just a glimpse at what she’s been up to in the last few years.

After 10 years in corporate, Mel left to establish her photography business - a decision that would open new doors and a completely new life. After experiencing a number of life-altering events, Melissa created The Sista Code in May 2014 with a dream to see women empowered, happy and connected.

In 2016 she established Got Your Back Sista the charitable arm of The Sista Code movement. Her vision with this non-profit organisation is to see women and their children happy, thriving and living independently after escaping the trauma of domestic violence.

Got Your Back Sista offers benevolent relief and support to women and children escaping domestic violence and are at risk of living below the poverty line. In just this past 3 months as the country went into lockdown, the charity received 3x the number of calls for support.

And Mel’s love of community, uplifting women and creative projects doesn’t stop there. At the end of 2019, Mel launched her personal project the Hey Soul Sista podcast and just this year she opened an “op shop” to support the Got Your Back Sista charity.

In the spirit of the True to You podcast, we go wide and deep with this conversation. Exploring everything from Mel’s career journey, to a life-altering cancer diagnosis to family to mentors. Jeni Steep is a Movement Teacher, Yoga Teacher and an advocate for womens’ health and wellness

She was first inspired by movement when she started taking movement classes 5 years ago, she was drawn in by the idea that exercise doesn’t have to be a chore, she realised it can be playful and fun but still challenging at the same time.

Hand balancing was her first movement addiction but as she began to explore she became very fond of a diverse range of modalities including gymnastics rings, acrobatics, yoga, dance, flow and martial arts (to name a few).

Jeni was inspired to teach after seeing the impact movement had made on her physical and emotional wellbeing. In 2017 Jeni began teaching movement classes and then in 2018 travelled to Ubud to complete her 200 hour Yoga Teacher Qualification. Jeni currently teaches movement classes out of The Movement Collective and is also available for 1:1 training both in person and online.

Jeni is also running a series of women's wellness events this year (2020) called Exuberant woman aimed at connecting women around the Newcastle area and inspiring them to lead life with purpose and from the heart.

Can you believe we are two days out from the end of a decade. Holy crap balls it’s crazy and exciting isn’t it?

Given this momentous occasion and my love of reflection recently, I thought I’d share with you the exact end of year process I did this year.

Typically, I do my end of year review and goal setting on or around New Years Day, but this year, I decided to start this process a little earlier on my birthday. I really recommend doing this if you can squeeze it in before Dec 31st rolls around, as it gives plenty of time for your vision and goals to marinate before you lock them in.

This year we're shaking it up and trying something different. The thought of a new decade on the way has me ready to reinvigorate my trusty old ways.

I've created a three part process which takes you from reflection to zone of genius to your goals. It takes around an hour or so to complete for one area of your life (in this case, I looked at my career and business), however, you may like to do the same for other areas of your life like health & wellbeing and relationships.

Just to get one thing straight - This is by no means the ONLY way to set goals, but I wanted to share it because it’s been hugely liberating and fun.

Most of us can articulate the “what” and the “how” pretty easily. But “why” you are more valuable than the woman next to you is a whole other ball game.

Personal brand is something we all have, and another way of bringing together all the elements that make us memorable and the unique value we bring to our work. ⠀ While we might think that only certain people need a personal brand, truth is — living in the digital age, means we have one whether we want to or not. So you can either be consciously aware of your value or you can leave it for someone else to decide.

So the real question is: not whether you have a personal brand, instead does your personal brand show your company, your future boss or clients what you’d like them to see and hear? what will set you apart if you’re one of many women talking about the same stuff?

Once you know your personal brand, the second thing you need to learn to do is express it!

After working for over a decade as a professional dancer, a career which took her around the world, she returned home to Australia and found herself going through a career transition. In January 2019, Lisa started a daily podcast called Self - which she describes a short and powerful way to kick start your day with intention and a positive mindset.
