00:03.200 --> 00:16.399
Welcome to Digital Bites. This is Desiree Renee. Today we are going to talk about icloud settings basics with markdown and Page Explorer in Jaws. Enjoy.

00:21.360 --> 03:26.630
Hello everyone, this is Kris back here with a really nice digital bite for you. Now I'm not usually accused of having my head in the clouds, but I had my head in icloud recently. See what I did there? I was having some issues with syncing my results for playing the Quartiles game which I featured this past show. And I was concerned because I really wanted to continue where I left off on both of my devices, my iPhone and my iPad mini. When I went to my iPad mini, it is reporting that I didn't hardly accomplish anything. So I was pretty annoyed about that and I really wanted to get credit for that super duper 100 point score that I got on my first game. So I wanted to make sure that everything was syncing okay. So I thought I would dive into the icloud settings and show you what I needed to turn on or off. And just some tips about this. So I've been a little confused about the two different places where you can find your icloud settings, so we'll dive into that too. So I am running iOS 26.1 on my device and there are two places that you can go for icloud related settings and info. One is in your Apple account, also at the top of your screen in Settings, and the other is in icloud itself. So on the main screen, when you go to the icloud portion of your account, you're going to click on the name at the top of the screen and then after some initial listings like your payment and shipping and subscriptions and so forth, you'll have the name of your icloud plan. In my case it's the 50 gigabytes iCloud plus. Then under that you'll have icloud backup and it lists your last successful backup and how long ago it occurred. There's also a backup now button here and then you have a list of devices that are backed up to icloud. For instance, if you have an iPad. Other, you know, devices that are backed up. So here you can make sure that your backup is actually up to date. So I also wanted to find out like what could be going on with the syncing process of my apps and perhaps Apple News, maybe it was Game Center. So I asked my friend chatgpt and he gave me some ideas. But I did do some exploring. So I went to settings and I'll show you this here on my phone I went to settings and then under icloud and you'll find some duplicates here of things that we've just talked about. So here we have manage storage button at the top of the screen here under icloud in the mains settings screen Recommended for you. 3.

03:26.630 --> 03:28.870
Save to iCloud See all button.

03:29.110 --> 04:06.240
Okay, so here's the see all button. So if you don't click this button you'll only see a limited number of things like photos, drive, passwords, notes, messages and mail. Now below this you'll also find the time of your last successful backup. So as I said, this is that last successful backup is a duplicate of what we found in the main icloud account settings under your your name. So if you do click on this.

04:06.559 --> 04:09.760
See all button save to icloud heading.

04:10.000 --> 04:14.640
Then we have this heading here and below this manage how apps and features.

04:14.640 --> 04:16.430
On this iPhone sync to icloud Learn.

04:16.430 --> 04:20.550
More link heavy so you could learn more about that link and it would give you more information.

04:21.190 --> 04:22.790
Icloud photos button.

04:23.270 --> 04:32.349
So here are a list of the things that are in my icloud icloud.

04:32.349 --> 04:42.950
Drive button, icloud mail button, passwords and keychain button, notes button, messages in icloud button, health button, icloud calendar button and so forth.

04:42.950 --> 05:01.770
So you see here is a list of everything. Contacts, switch button on now here is where we find out if things are switched on. So this most everything is switched on for me except home because I don't have any home related automated things but.

05:02.330 --> 05:08.290
Reminders switch button on we have other things, reminders, Safari Switch button on News.

05:08.290 --> 07:09.330
Switch button on Now I believe news was switched off and since the Quartiles game is a part of news that was is probably an issue. Also you want to make sure if you're doing some of the Apple games that you also switched on Game center. But since it's anybody's guess which factor affected my results of not having my iPad and iPhone syncing my game progress, I'm not really sure. You've got all kinds of other apps here, pages, calendar, numbers, all that kind of thing and whether they are backed up to icloud or not. Underneath this there's a list of how much storage space they're taking and so you might if you are worried about your storage you could kind of see what's going on there. And then underneath this there's a manage your plan. So the bottom line is first of all make sure that the same items on your devices are switched on in your icloud backup for all your devices. If you tend to go from one to the other, it's really good idea. And then you also want to make sure that you've backed up those devices. It seems like a no brainer, but it's really good to sort of cross reference all of your devices and make sure they're behaving in the same way as you expect them to do. So that is how I resolved my issue with Quartiles not syncing my progress. So I'm very happy now that I can continue a game on on one device to the other. If I want to play it on my iPad, I can pick that up. If I want to play it on my iPhone, I can continue in the same place in the game. And also my results are synced across the devices. So in case you'd like to have your head in the clouds for a minute and figure out those icloud settings. Welcome to icloud in the main settings screen and also check out the icloud under your Apple account. Hope you enjoyed this tip and we'll see you next time.

07:16.530 --> 08:22.940
Hello everybody and welcome to this digital bite. My name is Jonathan Simeone. Today I'm starting a series on Markdown. For those who don't know, Markdown is a very lightweight and I'm going to say programming language, but I don't want to scare people because it's actually really easy to pick up and what it allows you to do is format text in plain text and then if you have the right software, you can convert it to word files or HTMLs, even PDFs, and we're going to cover more of that as the series goes along. Today I want to show you some very important syntax to how to make Markdown. And because I've customized my jaws so much, I'm using NVDA for this one because I want you to hear the punctuation and symbols being used. So I'm just going to read the.

08:22.940 --> 08:27.100
Current line, top number, heading one.

08:28.010 --> 09:04.250
The reason it says number is when you make headings in Markdown, you use the pound sign or shift and the number three. And each pound sign you use is a different heading level. So what that means is in this case I wrote 1 pound sign, then I hit space and then I typed in heading one. So when I convert this document it will be formatted as a heading 1. I'm going to just keep down arrowing blank.

09:04.410 --> 09:07.370
Here is some text and to get.

09:07.370 --> 09:24.670
The text into normal text, when you convert it, you leave a blank line so that whatever you're using to convert it understands that this text is not to be formatted as the heading one. I'm going to down arrow again.

09:24.830 --> 09:26.670
Blank, number, number, heading two.

09:26.830 --> 09:43.950
So you heard that Number, number, heading two. So now I did two pound signs, then a space and then typed in heading two. So if everything works as it should, this text will be a heading two. When I show you the document in.

09:43.950 --> 09:46.600
Word blank, here is more text.

09:46.920 --> 09:51.240
This text again should be normalized. I'm going to hit the down arrow again.

09:51.480 --> 09:53.800
Blank, number, number, number, heading three.

09:54.120 --> 10:02.040
So three pound signs, then a space and then the heading level three that I typed in. I'm just going to keep going blank.

10:02.120 --> 10:03.480
Here is a bulleted list.

10:04.600 --> 10:31.730
So now to make a bullet, the easiest way is you can use the dash sign and space and then type in your bulleted text apples. Oh, and nvda, I guess is not going to read that. But there is a dash. Before apples, I wrote dash, space, apples, oranges, dash space, oranges, grapes, dash space, grapes. I'm going to down arrow blank.

10:31.730 --> 10:33.930
Here is a numbered list and for.

10:33.930 --> 10:41.460
The numbers, it's really simple. You just type number one, period space, then your text.

10:41.620 --> 10:47.620
The 1st of January 2nd, February, 2, period space, February 3, March.

10:48.180 --> 10:57.820
And 3, period space, March. Now, since I've already created this, I'm just going to make sure it's saved with control S. And now I'm going.

10:57.820 --> 11:01.500
To close this desktop list and I'm going to go.

11:01.500 --> 11:02.740
I hope it's still open.

11:03.380 --> 11:04.660
C users. John.

11:04.900 --> 11:05.380
It is.

11:05.380 --> 11:07.220
Items view list Markdown.

11:07.380 --> 11:19.780
Okay, and I'm on the file now. I'm going to open this in Word and if everything works the way it's supposed to, that text will be formatted as I indicated in the markdown test.

11:19.860 --> 11:29.940
File cut, alt T control copy, rename, shear, delete, pop open with collapsed edge. Sharp notepad visuals. Word 4 of 6.

11:30.630 --> 11:32.390
So now I'm just going to hit enter on Word.

11:32.950 --> 11:40.430
See user markdown test MD compatibility mode. Word document, page one, section one.

11:40.430 --> 11:42.230
I'm going to hit Ctrl to stop it.

11:42.470 --> 11:44.150
Heading level one, heading one.

11:44.550 --> 11:46.549
And you see it's got my heading one.

11:46.630 --> 11:47.750
Here is some text.

11:48.230 --> 11:49.350
Here is some text.

11:49.350 --> 11:57.190
Is normal heading level 2. Heading 2, heading 2 is the proper level. Here is more text. Heading level 3. Heading 3.

11:57.630 --> 11:59.390
Heading 3 is the proper level.

11:59.470 --> 12:07.310
Here is a bulleted list. Bullet, apples, bullet, oranges, bullet, grapes. Here is a spelling error numbered list.

12:07.630 --> 12:09.790
Oh, I guess I misspelled numbered.

12:10.670 --> 12:13.950
1St January 2nd, February 3rd, March.

12:14.990 --> 12:59.960
So this is a brief look at how you format very basically with Markdown. And I will tell you, as a blind person, using Markdown saves me a lot of time. I literally have written loads of documents for my job using Markdown and then converted them to Word or PDF or HTML depending on what I needed to do and applying the formatting that I wanted. And we'll go into that in future bytes. I will say that to make this convert in Word, I use a plugin called Writeage and we'll go over Writeage in the next byte. Thank you for listening.

13:05.960 --> 14:21.780
Hey everybody, my name is Desiree. Today I want to talk a little bit about Page Explorer. Now, I do not have Page Explorer available in JAWS on my home annual license. And I know a lot of people have been discussing that, so I won't get into it here. But what I wanted to do was show you what it does on my work computer using my professional employee license. And the reason that this is important to me is our website is very complex for Pearson employees. It's got a lot of carousels and moving parts and different things. Sometimes I just want to find something very quickly, like my absence, balance, how many hours do I have left to take a vacation time and that kind of thing. Previously, I would just kind of have to go onto the page and explore it and move by heading and try to kind of guess where the absences might be. Now, if I run Page Explorer, it actually gives me quite a few tips on how to best navigate the page. So the first thing I want to do is show you what happens when I go into. It's called Oracle. And then I'll show you how it kind of tells you how you can navigate. So I'm on the page now.

14:21.860 --> 14:24.020
Good evening. Desiree Samioni, Heading level one.

14:24.340 --> 14:48.530
Okay, so I am on the main page under my profile. Now I'm going to run Page Explorer. I'm going to do shift insert E starting Page Explorer. And it takes a while because the site is pretty complex. So it's running, running.

14:54.050 --> 15:00.770
Page summary 1 layout layout bullet. The page has a top navigation area with a menu button, a search box, notification and accessibility settings links.

15:01.330 --> 15:22.130
Okay, so it pulls up this summary of the page and it's kind of laid out in different lists. So what I'm going to do is actually go out of the edit field. What it does is it puts my focus directly into the edit field so I can type in questions about the page. But let's say I just want to know what the layout is here. I'm going to shift tab provide Feedback.

15:22.130 --> 15:23.730
On this response button to my Activity.

15:23.730 --> 15:25.290

Heading level 1 so basically it's fscompanion.

15:31.370 --> 15:33.690
Heading level 3 layout so here are.

15:33.850 --> 15:36.690
The page summary so you've got the layout.

15:36.690 --> 15:52.270
Well, this page has a top the top Navigation and directory bullet. The main content under the About Me tab is divided into two sections, Quick Actions on the left and Apps on the right. Bullet Below these sections is another area titled Things to Finish, showing tasks assigned or created by the user. 16:53.860 --> 17:00.660
This response okay, so that's the response I get now. Let's say I want to ask it what my absence balances are.

17:00.660 --> 17:01.580
Type your question here.

17:01.580 --> 17:04.860
So I'm going to go back to the edit field with E. I'm going to press enter.

17:05.199 --> 17:06.279
Type your question here so I can.

17:06.279 --> 17:12.479
Type and I'm going to say what are my vacation balances?

17:13.999 --> 17:49.840

Press Enter to activate the absences link. 2. Once in the absences section, look for headings or links related to Balances or vacation. You may need to use Heading Navigation, H key or the Links list again to find the specific balance information. If you do not see your balances immediately, the Absences app is the correct place to find them. If needed, use the screen reader's table navigation commands as balances are often displayed in a table format.

17:50.400 --> 18:01.600
Wow, that's a lot of information. So it told me that I need to go to the Absences app or the link on this page. So I've got to get out of the Page Explorer. I'm going to press Escape now.

18:02.290 --> 18:04.050
Think about me Oracle and now I'm.

18:04.050 --> 18:08.050

18:21.410 --> 18:36.330
Now I'm going to run the Explorer again. Shift Insert E Starting Page Explorer. And of course, again, it takes a bit.

18:41.450 --> 18:46.250
Page summary 1 layout layout bullet the page has a top navigation area with a menu button, a search box.

18:46.570 --> 19:02.180
Okay, now let's say I don't really want to go through all this and I just want to. I want to know what my vacation hours are. What's my balance on my vacation time? What is M space? My vacation balance.

19:19.860 --> 19:20.420

19:20.420 --> 19:21.580

19:21.580 --> 19:22.460
Oh, there's no buttons.

19:22.460 --> 19:23.420
There are no buttons on this page.

19:23.420 --> 19:27.460
So see, it's not exactly always accurate. Let's go to a Links list Links.

At it ask what are My Vacation eight balances.

20:07.210 --> 20:20.250

How much sick time do I have?

20:26.010 --> 20:33.930

How much personal time do I have? You have 32 hours of personal days available. This balance was calculated on December 31, 2025.

20:50.360 --> 21:12.920
Okay, so it gives me all of that information and I don't have to necessarily go through and use the table. Now let's say I want to try to ask it without using Page Explorer. Let's just try FScompanion. So I'm gonna do on the main page here, I'm gonna do insert space and I'm gonna do F1 hello, I'm.

21:12.920 --> 21:16.720
Excited to help you learn more about. Here are some things to know about our Conversation Bullet.

21:16.720 --> 21:26.940
You can use the okay, let's see if we can type how many vacation hours do I have?

21:27.340 --> 21:41.020
How many vacation hours do I hve I do not have access to your personal vacation hours or employment records. If you are looking for this information in a specific application such as an hour portal or a payroll system, please let me know which application you are using. I can then guide you on how to navigate.

21:41.180 --> 22:44.890
So I can't just use FS Companion. I have to do it through Page Explorer. So the only way to do this and ask questions about the page is to use Page Explorer. And luckily my employer has enabled it so I can actually use it. But it is an AI tool and some employers do not allow it through. For right now, I use it for this purpose as well as to navigate things such as JIRA that are very complicated to see if I have any tasks assigned to me and I can do it by headings and by links and moving by regions and landmarks and all of those things, but it's just a faster way for me to get a summary of the page and kind of give me some direction on where I need to go and what kind of element I need to search for in order to find that. That's just a basic look at Page Explorer. Hopefully some people found this helpful and we will see you next time. Thank you for joining us. Hope you enjoyed today's Digital Bites presentation.
