WEBVTT

00:36.370 --> 00:43.378
Hello and welcome to our weep there yet in exploration and education in anime, I'm your anime idiot, Patrick dugan.

00:43.474 --> 00:46.114
I'm an anime expert, D hollander.

00:46.242 --> 00:50.200
And I'm brenda mccullough, your anime. Kelly slater's. Pro surfer on the ps two.

00:53.330 --> 00:56.586
Ride those waves, mash them triangles.

00:56.698 --> 01:01.360
I don't know anything else about surfing, okay?

01:01.730 --> 01:04.602
I was waiting for a rocket power reference.

01:04.666 --> 01:15.554
Shit. The back was going to be Johnny tsunami. But I feel like I talk about Disney Channel original movies too much in my own personal life. Been on a real don't talk all that shit.

01:15.602 --> 01:24.230
Let's go for the real nugget, this obscure ps Two game that three people still have. Garage sale.

01:24.970 --> 01:32.074
I mean, you know, I don't pick stuff that's coherent or that a lot of people know about, so yeah, I.

01:32.112 --> 01:37.562
Know, but when you're like, yeah, in my brain, I have all these coherent things and I reach for the wrong.

01:37.616 --> 01:48.062
I actively choose the more incoherent one. And besides, in our personal lives, we talk about rocket power too much. With tito and Ray mundo, the perfect.

01:48.116 --> 01:51.822
Shared the love affair that inspired us all.

01:51.876 --> 01:55.390
Yeah. One for the books, one for the century.

01:56.310 --> 01:58.930
I just saw Soul. That was my spark.

02:01.110 --> 02:06.946
My spark is shipping random characters from nickelodeon cartoons.

02:07.138 --> 02:13.046
Oh, no, not random characters. The one OTP you find.

02:13.228 --> 02:15.078
Yes, that's the one.

02:15.244 --> 02:20.890
The true one. Stick, stickly in face. Love them. Great ship.

02:22.510 --> 02:31.150
Hey, it's another evening recording. I don't know what's happening. We're already losing it. What's going on this week?

02:31.300 --> 03:06.486
Let me tell you, this week we're watching a movie. We're watching one that was directed by masaki uwasa, who is the creator of ping pong, the animation. It's called Ride Your Wave, and I've been pretty excited to watch it. I heard about it a while ago. Like it was higher up on our list than I thought it would be. Meaning I've been adding anime for a while. Yeah, I heard about it a while ago and I've been eager to give it a go since I love ping pong so much.

03:06.668 --> 03:08.954
Interesting. If nothing else, it's going to be.

03:08.992 --> 03:14.570
Pretty yeah, true that. Brendan, do you know anything about this?

03:14.640 --> 03:17.900
No, I got nothing on this one. I like ping pong, though.

03:18.510 --> 03:26.522
Sweet. So, yeah, going in pretty blind, but we have good expectations crossed.

03:26.666 --> 03:32.926
I'm a very pasty, white Irish nerd. I don't go to the beach and I don't know things about the beach.

03:33.038 --> 03:39.410
I hate the beach. I may be from Southern California, born and raised, but I hate the beach.

03:40.470 --> 03:57.800
Oh, then I guess I'm the expert this week. Old beach boy dugan over here. I'm the beachiest of the three, so I can tell you one, it sucks. Don't go. Three, fuck every single.

04:00.410 --> 04:05.562
Beach, of course, but I have pretty bad experiences when I go.

04:05.696 --> 04:10.330
It's not great. Yeah, I grew up going to the Jersey Shore, so you can imagine.

04:10.910 --> 04:15.578
I mostly just don't like sand and there's a lot of that at the beach.

04:15.674 --> 04:17.898
It's coarse. It gets everywhere.

04:17.994 --> 04:42.440
Gets everywhere. And then the worst part about it is that I lived like 2 hours from the beach. So anytime you go to the beach, you then have to sit in your nasty sunburnt, sand covered self for 2 hours on the way home. The best time I had was when I stayed at a beach house for my grandpa's 80th birthday. Because then we could just walk back to the house and take a shower right away.

04:42.810 --> 04:43.878
Oh, nice.

04:44.044 --> 04:45.526
Yeah, that was great.

04:45.708 --> 05:01.734
For being such a renowned activity, there's no other thing that you need to immediately brush off and just immediately remove all of the environment off of you to continue living peacefully.

05:01.862 --> 05:11.790
Yeah. That being said, I like the idea of the beach. When I watch it in a movie, I'm like, hell yeah. Of course, the beach.

05:12.930 --> 05:36.310
This is why we talk about anime, because in real life it sucks. Ideally in a cartoon former, it's pretty, it's great. Everything applies. I think my best time at the beach is I went with some friends and my dad went to the beach. There was a tropical storm warning, so he couldn't leave the house. So he watched Scary Movie three like eight times in a row because he was leaping on a channel. I got that movie memorized and it's garbage.

05:37.290 --> 05:38.134
Wow.

05:38.332 --> 05:40.818
So right up your alley for having memorized.

05:40.914 --> 05:41.560
Yeah.

05:43.290 --> 05:44.274
Incredible.

05:44.402 --> 05:46.040
Well, we've shit on the beach enough.

05:46.810 --> 05:50.030
Yeah. Let's go to this idealized version of it.

05:50.060 --> 06:13.380
It ah to dream. Something about the shape of water.

06:15.030 --> 06:16.360
I'm off my game.

06:17.930 --> 06:20.134
My head's not in it today. I'm sorry.

06:20.252 --> 06:21.590
Anime del toro.

06:22.330 --> 06:32.966
Anime del toro. I am some fish man. I once saw Doug Jones at a coffee shop that I worked at. Oh, I think I scared him. I think I I think I didn't want to be too excited.

06:32.998 --> 06:33.850
Revenge.

06:35.070 --> 06:44.654
I didn't want to be too excited. So then I think I wasn't good enough at hiding it. I think it might have weirded him out, but I tried not to.

06:44.772 --> 06:57.060
I assume that's what you meant. But my mind immediately went to you hiding behind like a counter or like a wall and enjoying how scary dog jokes got you.

06:57.750 --> 07:43.586
Anyway, quite that, but we'll get into it. So as I watched this, I had my ocean incense lit, so that felt appropriate. And we opened on the ocean. Our main character is there. She's very happy to be there. It looks like she just moved there. She's got a bunch of boxes, but there's no time for unpacking. It's time to surf. So she rides her bike down to the beach. And then as she's doing that, we see a shot of some dudes. They're on a roof looking out to the ocean and they see her. And one of them, he has dark hair. He says that she saved his life and that's it. We don't get to know much more.

07:43.608 --> 07:45.314
About that until later on.

07:45.512 --> 07:50.340
Wait. Okay. I fully missed that part when I was watching this.

07:52.550 --> 08:25.854
Yeah. I will say I watched this subtitled. The subtitles were not helpful for any sort of localization purposes because some of it was just, like, poor grammar, and some of it was just so into Japanese thing of like, oh, you're from here, so you pronounce my name like this, and I have no context. A lot of the text wasn't translated, so I barely caught up.

08:26.052 --> 08:28.714
This is rough. Yeah. At least when I was taking notes.

08:28.762 --> 08:30.014
Trouble with it, but okay.

08:30.132 --> 08:35.940
This is also from the person who will only watch subtitles when it's the only option.

08:37.350 --> 08:54.280
And he starts, like, coming along with the song, and that just made my heart feel warm. I liked that. And then we see her trying to make herself some omu rice later on in the day. She's not very good at it. And then as she sits to eat, her towers of boxes start to fall down.

08:54.650 --> 08:57.094
But claustrophobia is kicking in real hard.

08:57.212 --> 09:06.694
Yeah. And her mom calls her, and we find out that she's there for university. I should say her name. What's her name? hinako.

09:06.822 --> 09:07.450
Yes.

09:07.600 --> 09:40.242
Okay. hinako. She's there for university, and we never find out what her program is, but her mom is like, I hope you stick with it. And she's like, I will. I love the ocean, so it might be like, marine biology or something. We don't really know. Then we see the boys. They're firefighters. These are firefighter boys, and they're training. One of them loses the grip on the hose, and it's the other boy we saw earlier who was blonde. I forget his name already because I wrote their names later on.

09:40.376 --> 09:41.410
Wasabi.

09:42.730 --> 09:52.282
I wrote it down by the end of the movie. The whole time, I was just like, this guy's friend, this guy's friend, this guy's friend. I was like, I guess he's important enough. Yeah, I guess he matters now that I have to write his actual name out.

09:52.416 --> 10:37.160
Yeah. They call him wasabi. So she's riding by on her bike, and as she's doing so, he loses grip on the hose, and she gets all wet, and he runs over, and he recognizes her. And then she says that she's lost. She's trying to get back to her apartment, and he gives her directions. She goes off, and he calls her Miss Hero, which is cute, but she doesn't really seem to think anything of it. And then that night, she lives next to a building that's under construction. And from the building that's under construction, some hooligans are shooting off fireworks, which is the dumbest fucking thing I could possibly think of.

10:38.250 --> 10:48.220
My first note was friendly reminder not to fuck with fireworks in the city and do not use the elevator during a fire. We say that one of the driest cities in the country that is frequently on fire.

10:49.710 --> 10:54.794
We learned this about fireworks from experience because no one gives a shit anyways.

10:54.922 --> 11:41.414
Yeah, it's just crazy that they're in a building that's under construction, which feels dangerous enough, but then it's right by an apartment where hundreds of people live wild. So one goes astray and it lights a balcony on fire, of course. And then the firefighters are on their way. And wasabi tells the other guy, who we find out his name is mina Toe, that his Miss Hero is in the building that's on fire. And we see her grabbing what she can, and then she misses the elevator, which is weird. I'm like, why are you guys using an elevator? Maybe the rules are different in Japan. Maybe they don't make I feel like that's universal. She needs the stairs.

11:41.462 --> 11:42.060
Yeah.

11:43.790 --> 11:50.894
And then she goes to the stairs, but then she goes up for some reason, it's all over the place. I'm like, why did she get this down?

11:51.092 --> 12:02.446
No reason. Could have easily been like, oh, there's fire down there. Just like a quick glimpse down. No, she just immediately goes up. No hesitation in her mind. panicked.

12:02.638 --> 12:27.100
Yeah, I was going to say maybe she could have been panicked, but it didn't seem like it. Anyway, the firefighters realize that she's unaccounted for. Like they're counting the people in the building. They call for some guys to find her. And then she calls down from the roof that she needs help. And luckily they hear her. And then minato goes up in like a cherry picker thing to get her.

12:29.790 --> 12:38.000
I do like how the other two firefighters come up to the roof. It's like, we're here to save you. And then he comes float again on the basket on the ladder. And it's just like fucking show off.

12:38.690 --> 12:46.746
With the fireworks in the background. The building may be on fire, but these fucking idiots still send them off.

12:46.788 --> 12:50.894
Still lighting off fireworks, not even fleeing the scene of a crime.

12:50.942 --> 13:04.150
You just no, they just don't even care. So he brings her down to safety, and she thinks him, and then he thinks her, but doesn't say why. He keeps this very vague.

13:05.610 --> 13:13.526
Yeah, now that I know that he knew who she was in the very beginning, now this kind of recolors the whole movie for me releases all serious.

13:13.638 --> 13:14.780
We'll get there.

13:18.030 --> 14:03.980
He gets scolded for letting her take her stuff in the crane. But he's like, don't worry about it. I'm glad I could save you, and I want to watch you surf sometime. And then she asks if he would want to try to surf. And he seems interested. And then we see more training. We see that wasabi is not very good at being a firefighter yet. And he's like, lamenting, being like, maybe I picked the wrong career. Like, I'm really not good at any of this. And then minato is like, it just takes time to get there, bud. You're just starting out it's okay. And then he goes to leave and he seems super happy because he's going on a date.

14:04.510 --> 14:05.498
Oh boy.

14:05.664 --> 14:24.478
Who. They're driving to the beach and she says that she's tired because she had to move her stuff from the 8th floor to the second. And she says it must be annoying to have to deal with people like the ones who were setting off fireworks. Yes, it is correct.

14:24.644 --> 14:27.758
You know, your house burnt down, it'd.

14:27.774 --> 14:30.370
Probably be more annoying for you, you almost died.

14:31.030 --> 15:11.520
True. And then she says that she used to live in the area when she was young and then they moved and she wanted to come back, so she decided to go to university here. They talk about their names in the subtitles. I didn't read it so much as accents. I guess they were just talking about and maybe not just sound like a total weebly, but maybe I just understand what they're talking about better. Because some characters in the Japanese alphabet also mean different things. So they're like talking about how she's talking about how she read his name the first time she saw it. And he's like, oh no, that's not right. So that's what they're talking about.

15:12.130 --> 15:30.726
Yeah, I've just seen it in stuff before where they discuss like, oh, my name is pronounced this way or spelled this way. There's usually a translator note underneath the text as well saying like he's talking about this word, she's talking about this word, but when they just say, my name is minato or was it she.

15:30.748 --> 15:32.374
Was talking about his last name, which.

15:32.412 --> 15:46.250
I forget now, but hinagichi. Hinagishi. It's pronounced hinagishi. That doesn't work with English. So if it was just a little like FYI note, it would have helped.

15:47.470 --> 15:50.618
Yeah, she was just saying that she thought it was something completely different.

15:50.784 --> 15:51.500
Yeah.

15:52.110 --> 16:03.200
Anyway, and then she notices his like, beluga keychain on his rear view window and they talk about it and then he starts playing some music and they both sing along and I love it.

16:04.530 --> 16:13.762
Someone can explain the actual details and how it works of the cassette to audio jack converters. It's magic. Like I don't care if he tells me it's just magic. Yeah.

16:13.816 --> 16:15.378
That's all it needs to be.

16:15.544 --> 16:37.926
Yeah. So they get to the beach and he's already he's got a board and a wetsuit and she's teaching him how, but he's having some trouble and afterward he's trying to catch his breath and he's like, I'm going to try harder next time. And then he makes some coffee on like a little camp stove, freshly ground coffee. And then he makes some egg sandwiches. Looks delicious.

16:38.118 --> 16:42.414
Real show off, going real hard on this first date.

16:42.532 --> 17:02.658
He's going all out and she says that he's a real hero. And he says, hey, you can call me by my first name because I want to do that with you. And she gets all flustered. Oh boy. And then a bird swoops down and steals his sandwich. Just like in ping pong. Love that.

17:02.744 --> 17:06.980
I was trying to think I'm like, what anime do we watch where this happened? I was trying to remember it.

17:07.430 --> 17:24.554
That's because they know what it's like to be at a beach. Anything you have, you can have even something that looks like food, but it's not food. And they're still like, oh, I'm a dumb idiot. I'm going to try to eat that. And then they eat some inedible shit and die because they're stupid and the worst. I hate them.

17:24.672 --> 17:27.882
Yeah, birds are birds are terrible. Maybe you, like, grew up.

17:27.936 --> 17:37.790
Probably my least favorite animal is the seagull, because yeah, my life has just been plagued with their buffoonery.

17:39.090 --> 17:42.566
It's not the deadliest. It's just the most annoying and inconvenient.

17:42.698 --> 17:43.380
Yes.

17:45.350 --> 17:58.146
So he gets back into the ocean. He manages to stand up on the surfboard. yay. And then they go to a cool little coffee shop. It's very fancy. And he's like, looking around and he's like, oh, they have fire extinguishers.

17:58.258 --> 17:58.630
Cool.

17:58.700 --> 18:17.706
Good for them. Fire safety. And she says that she feels safe with him. And he says, oh, yeah, I'll always save you first. And then she gets flustered and cleans up. And she brings their tray to a little, like, lift that they have in the cafe for the trays. And she just drops it to the.

18:17.728 --> 18:20.380
First floor, wasn't lifted up.

18:21.230 --> 18:25.520
And she apologizes to the owners, but they're like, it's okay. It happens.

18:27.010 --> 18:31.406
We have no safety mechanism to stop it. So it happens three times a day?

18:31.508 --> 18:32.720
Pretty often, yes.

18:34.530 --> 19:04.220
And he says that he wants to see her again, and not necessarily just to surf, but to do something new and then maybe get coffee again. And then there's a montage, a cute little montage of them going on dates and establishing their relationship. And I just love that. The music of this montage is them singing that song together while we see later he's playing the ukulele. It just feels very real.

19:04.830 --> 19:28.210
It really adds a lot to just, like, the montage sequence. Instead of just being like it's just them spending time together. We see them in a karaoke bar, like, singing that song that's playing over the whole time. But my only note was, christ, I'm lonely. I'm fine being single. And then I see this. I'm just like, oh, no, here I go.

19:28.360 --> 19:31.780
Feelings I keep shoving down they're coming back.

19:34.310 --> 19:39.160
It's them, like, going on cute dates and taking trips together.

19:40.970 --> 19:44.600
People enjoy spending time with each other. I don't know.

19:45.690 --> 19:52.530
The nicest thing is that while they're singing, they're like, laughing and oh, my God, it's so cute.

19:52.610 --> 19:58.022
It wasn't like a perfect take. It was like them goofy, kind of having fun with it. And it was very cute.

19:58.166 --> 20:20.820
Yeah, I'm sure they just put them in a room and they were like, all right, play the song and just make it natural. And that's what they did. And we see them hold hands and smooch during a sunset. Very nice. And there's like a quick implication of them having sex, which was, like, very sweet. I loved it because they were just, like, kissing each other and then kissing each other more deeply. And I was like, oh, my God, I love this.

20:21.510 --> 20:24.740
It wasn't just two people going into a porta potty. You see shaking back.

20:27.450 --> 20:28.680
No, it was beautiful.

20:29.610 --> 20:32.760
Hey, that could be beautiful too. It's at a Kid Rock concert. It's great.

20:33.850 --> 20:38.322
No, you're getting your philly boundary side of that.

20:38.396 --> 20:41.290
Sorry. I'm better than that now. That's not me anymore.

20:45.150 --> 20:51.040
I don't know how long this is. It could have been like a year. I don't know. Maybe less.

20:51.570 --> 20:53.246
It seems a lot like months.

20:53.348 --> 21:06.350
Yeah, it really depends because I feel I underestimated this time. And then the rest of the movie didn't feel right. So we'll get into that after the big reveal.

21:06.510 --> 21:21.222
Yeah. So out of the montage, she's meeting his sister. Her name's yoko. She's very sassy. She's a teenager. And he compares her to a blue ring octopus, small and full of venom super.

21:21.356 --> 21:24.434
If you see one, don't fucking touch it. Like so venomous.

21:24.562 --> 21:44.046
Yeah. And she calls him stupid and saying love is stupid. And hinako is just like, oh, it's okay. Like, I can deal with your venom because I've got a strong immune system. Ha ha. And then and then yoko just leaves. She's like, Fuck you guys. You guys are cute as hell and I hate you.

21:44.148 --> 21:45.230
Disgusting.

21:46.850 --> 22:02.850
And then he tells hinako that she doesn't have many friends because she's so mean. She's just like that to everybody. So he asks, I don't think so. You're friendly.

22:03.350 --> 22:04.866
What does that say about us if.

22:04.888 --> 22:07.880
We'Re hanging out to Apple? Ask yourself.

22:09.770 --> 23:04.082
So he asks hinako to be her friend and she's like, of course I will. And then they see this big public proposal and she thinks it's sweet, but he's like, oh, it's kind of cheesy and impersonal, isn't it? Because, like the it's like an announcer saying it and not like the guy. But they go up in this building and they add, like, this note to, like, a wall of love hearts with their names on it. She can't spell his name right, so she spells it phonetically. And then he says, what are you going to do when it's your last name? And I love shit like that. Me, an engaged person, loving, romantic shit. Who could believe it? And then they also do a lock thing, like that bridge in Paris. They do one of those where they lock a heart on a fence.

23:04.226 --> 23:21.354
I really like that. There was like a light up thing of a heart around it with, like, wings. And the couples were getting in front of it to take a picture together. And there was a huge line for it. And minato was just like, not, fuck this. And just went in front of the window that had the reflection of it, and they stood in front of the reflection. I was like, Ah, that boy smart.

23:21.482 --> 23:22.480
Smart boy.

23:23.650 --> 23:57.910
And then it starts snowing, and she says that after snow, there are good waves. And then they're like camping. I don't know, but they're outside, and he's making omu rice, and it comes out perfectly. And she's like, how do you do that? And then he makes another one, and he's like, you want to try to plate it? But of course she messes it up. And he's like, that's okay. And I love the look of omu rice, but I don't even, like, runny eggs.

23:58.250 --> 23:59.238
Yeah, I don't know if I would.

23:59.244 --> 24:01.080
Like it, but it looks so good.

24:01.690 --> 24:07.690
Every time I see it, I'm just like, oh, that looks really good. And then they cut it open, and you see, like, my eggs are still wet inside. I was like, oh, never mind.

24:07.760 --> 24:31.700
It's gross nasty, but it must be good. Japanese people take eggs very seriously, and they're holding hands while they eat. She's like, I always want to feel connected. And he's like, we should move in together. And she's like, I don't know if I want to do that, because I feel like I'm starting to rely on you too much, and I want to find my own calling, ride my own wave, as it were.

24:32.950 --> 24:34.660
You said the thing.

24:35.830 --> 24:40.360
I checked out after this because this was clearly the peak of the movie, so I don't know what happens.

24:41.370 --> 25:23.786
And she says she wants to be like him. And he says, like, oh, you know, like, I didn't always know what I wanted to do, but then I saw some baby turtles hatch on a beach and make it to the ocean. And seeing them work hard like that when I was so little made me want to work hard. So he started doing coastal patrols with his grandpa, and then he realized that he wanted to help people, so he became a fireman. And she says that she feels like she's always the one being saved, and he says that he will always be there to save her. Her safe harbor for the rest of her life is what he says. And they kiss, and it's sweet.

25:23.898 --> 25:24.750
Duh.

25:25.690 --> 25:39.206
I love that. That hit me just now when I was watching it. I was like, oh, that's kind of cute. But I was taking notes. But now, thinking about it, it's like, oh, man, look at that's. Really cute.

25:39.398 --> 25:43.866
This guy is so perfect in every way. I'm sure nothing bad happens to you.

25:43.888 --> 25:48.250
I hope nothing bad happens to him. Oh, man.

25:48.320 --> 25:54.634
Oh, unrelated, do you guys remember the first five minutes of up? I was just thinking about that out of the blue.

25:54.682 --> 25:56.080
Perfect love story.

25:56.530 --> 26:03.918
Just so good. I love those pixar shorts that you can just stop watching after a few minutes, the minutes over and done.

26:04.084 --> 26:17.780
Just, you know, you watch that montage from before, and then you think about that one, you're like, wow, just lovely montages. Establishing love and connection between two people you start to care about, and then something goes wrong.

26:18.790 --> 26:28.150
If this was a series, like if this was anime series, this guy would be a mom with a side braided, ponytail like this. Fucking so dead. So many red flags.

26:29.850 --> 26:30.998
But let's get there.

26:31.084 --> 28:20.470
We'll get there. Going to apologize now. I wrote the names down all the way, but it's late, and they're going to just start getting messy. Boy and girl is fine. Cut to hanaka working at the flower shop. I guess that's the part time job she has while university or maybe that she graduated. I don't know. Time? No, I think she's just working, working there. And manato decides that he's going to go out and surf on his own. And we see he's, like, trying to get better on his own so he can get pressure. And so we see him getting a lot better. We see him they say the name at some point of the move he does, but he goes up a wave and does, like, a flip on it, like a half spin, like 360 or something. And while he's out surfing, we see a bunch of other guys running around on jet skis being assholes. You know, like the ones with fireworks. Moral of the story, don't be an asshole. And now we see them goofing around, and one does, like, a flip on the jet ski, and then we just see another one all of a sudden disappear. We see the Jesse fly out, and him not on it anymore, and turns out he's drowning. So monato is back on the beach, shaking off, getting ready to text to nako, and he hears the guy drowning. He's like, well, fighting coastal patrol. Got to go out there and save them. So it goes out with the surf warden, goes to save the dude. And then we see hanako goes to meet up with them after work, and she's in her wetsuit and ready to surf because it's supposed to be good waves after the snow, so it's all snowy on the beach and stuff and kind of dreary. And as she approaches the beach, she sees a bunch of emergency vehicles on there, like a bunch of an ambulance and suvs with emergency lights on them. And we see the divers searching for a body, like an inflatable raft. And we see Menardo's board broken in half. It's a good sign.

28:20.560 --> 28:21.390
Shocking.

28:22.050 --> 28:29.760
And once she sees the board, she starts passing out. And wasabi is there, and he starts running over to catch her.

28:30.450 --> 28:38.578
The worst when a character dies. And it's not like he was a firefighter and he didn't die in a fire.

28:38.744 --> 28:42.866
It was something inconsequential, like unrelated to what it felt like.

28:42.888 --> 28:53.510
It was building spoilers for the last of us, the first one. So whatever. But doesn't his daughter gets shot. Like, she doesn't even get bit by zombie or anything. Yeah, that always sucks.

28:53.850 --> 29:00.594
I played the beginning of that game three times, and the third time, I just started bawling at that scene. That's fucking it's a brutal scene.

29:00.722 --> 29:06.038
Yeah, that should always hurts when it's like, wow, I feel like you should have died this way, but this is worse.

29:06.214 --> 29:39.830
I don't want you dying either way, but I feel like I got gypped. I feel like you tricked me. So cut to the fire department, and we see a bunch of offerings on his desk. And we see his sister stop by talking to everyone at the fire department and goes saying he didn't make it. And we cut to Hanaka's apartment, and her phone is ringing, and she's just kind of ignoring the phone calls. And we hear someone knocking at her door, and she's kind of ignoring that. She's crawled up in, like, the field position, clearly not handling it well. Why would you it's a very rough period.

29:40.170 --> 29:40.920
Fair.

29:41.450 --> 30:01.738
And we see his sister and wasabi at this point just come friends come over, and they drop off some of his stuff, being like, hey, he still lived with his parents, but we figured, like, this is something you and him shared together, so you might want some of this stuff. And one of them is a giant inflatable. What is the specific? doffing?

30:01.834 --> 30:04.378
It's a finless baluga.

30:04.474 --> 30:21.858
Finless baluga. So it's just like a big inflatable fella. And as soon as she sees it or while they're talking, she says she moved because she just can't stand looking at the sea anymore because in her apartment, she always wanted to see the sea so she could surf. And now it's ruined for her.

30:22.024 --> 30:23.810
This apartment rules, though.

30:23.960 --> 30:30.770
It's a very nice apartment. Shit, this is good for a flower shop. A part time salary.

30:30.850 --> 30:31.480
Yeah.

30:31.930 --> 32:18.394
And while they're talking, wasabi starts crying while talking about minato, and he says that it's still like him to die trying to save someone else. And hanako says, no, it's my fault he died because I told him there's good waves after the snow. And his sister stands up and just like, no, both of you, stop blaming yourself. He died. We got to accept that and move on with it. We can't blame ourselves for this. And kind of gets pithy, but also makes a valid point. So she's kind of getting annoyed with them, and she's like, oh, by the way, here's his phone. You can deal with it now. And she leaves, and hanako calls his phone. What? She calls his phone and he yells at him for not being oh, right, yeah. hanako gets his phone and calls it and goes right to voicemail because he's dead. And she starts yelling at him, saying, like, he promised he would always be with her forever and always be by her side. And he's going back on this promise now. And then we cut to hanako, another next day or another day meeting up with her friends. She kind of alluded to her friends earlier in the movie and how they're similar to his sister where they're kind of like sharp tongue and a little cynical. But we see her with her friends and they're giving her, I guess, just at the university buying her like, some food. They buy an egg sandwich and some water and as soon as she sees both of those or coffee. As soon as she sees both of those, she's instantly reminded of their first date and starts getting upset again. She's been trying to figure out the passcode to his phone and can't get in. So they're trying to give suggestions of what it might be like his birthday, your birthday, something special. And they can't figure it out.

32:18.432 --> 32:43.082
It's funny that she compared yoko to these friends when they're nice. Later on they make some deprecating jokes or whatever. But at this moment, unlike yoko, they're being very nice. Yeah, you should be to your friend after their partner died.

32:43.226 --> 32:55.726
Yeah, I mean, they're also her friend versus yoko. I have to deal with my boyfriend and his girlfriend being all lovey dovey like. I can also see why she's a little more mean spirited or sharp tongue.

32:55.758 --> 32:58.182
They call her, but she's also mean all the time.

32:58.316 --> 33:01.414
That's true. She's also just kind of curmudging me all the time.

33:01.532 --> 33:03.080
That's kind of her thing.

33:04.010 --> 33:05.640
Fun and quirky. Right.

33:07.530 --> 34:32.980
So after she goes out with her friends, we cut to hanako with you just had her name and I already forgot it his sister. And they're at the aquarium and it's a really cool sequence where it's all black and they're walking around and it's just these pillars of colored light and it's just reflecting of the bubbles and the fish in the tubes, but the rest of the scenery is black. And I really like this shot. So she's talking to his sister, just trying to figure out like, hey, what would his passcode be? Like, he gave me his phone. I tried to figure some information out about trying, I guess, cope any way I can. Do you got an idea? She's like, I don't know, fire Safety Day, all these weird obscure holidays that someone like him would know because he's a firefighter obsessive. And she's like, oh, I don't know, why don't we meet up with Saudi? He might have some ideas. He might be cool to hang out with. I don't know, we just hang out with him. Nothing important. baku so they end up going to the cafe, which is the former employee of the first cafe we saw with like the dumb waiter inside. And that one's like old and wooden and stuff. And this one's pretty much the exact same, but modern and metal and everything. So since it was the former employee, he just recreated it in a different city, which is a cool way to reuse the environment, but make it a little different.

34:33.430 --> 34:34.180
Yeah.

34:35.430 --> 36:46.478
So they go to the cafe and they talk with Wasabi and nako spills her coffee, thinking about monado and clearly still having trouble with the death of her partner. So his sister tells her to stop being a baby and kind of just like, you got to face it. He ain't coming back. It sucks. We all hate it, but we got to accept reality and move on with it. Meanwhile, he's like, hey, maybe fucking shit. Let her fucking deal with this at her own pace. Like, she's having a rough fucking time. understandably? And I'm glad there was at least on there to counter it. You can be, like, the bitter pill of reality and, like, you got to just man up and move on with your life. This might have just happened. This might have been a year and a half ago. We don't understand time in this movie, so let her cope. And while they're at the cafe, their song comes on, the one they're singing before. And while their song is playing, Hanaka sees him in the glass of water, and she reaches out for it and kind of freaks out and spills the water everywhere and yells at Hanaka. And his sister starts yelling at hanko without your spilling glasses. Now she runs out in bolts because she's having a tough time. She just saw the ghost of her boyfriend in her class. And after Hanaka tries to see her yeah, she tries to see minato in, like, various forms of water. So we see her out at a mall or bookstore with her friends, and he appears like it's raining outside, and it's raining on the glass rooftop. And she sees him up there, but no one else does. And just, like, a pond in the water here and there. So she starts seeing him more and more, and she starts realizing that she sees him when she's singing their song. So she's out on a bridge one day, like, over top of a stream, and she starts singing the song, and a pillar of water rises up. Does she throw his phone? Is that what happens?

36:46.644 --> 36:48.462
Yeah. And it catches it?

36:48.596 --> 36:50.174
Yeah. So she throws his phone.

36:50.292 --> 36:54.974
She drops her phone. She's trying to take a picture of him to prove that she can see him.

36:55.012 --> 37:08.138
I think that's right. Yeah. So she tries to take a picture of him and drops her phone in the water, and she starts singing the song. And just the water rises up in, like, a pillar of it, like just an abnormal pillar, and gives it back to her. She starts singing.

37:08.174 --> 37:11.842
I just want to point out, even if he did that, that phone's ruined.

37:11.906 --> 39:04.060
That's still just water that dropped in water. So she starts, like, playing around and making sure, like yeah. No, it's definitely responding to her. And we get, like, a little more montages of her seeing him more and trying to catch show other people, like, yeah, there he is. And no one can see him, or he always disappears right when they go to look. So her friends suggest maybe going back with her family and spending some time there so she's less stressed. And we see hanako is wandering to herself that if he's a ghost and appears in the water because he died in it. And this is where all right. Yeah, like I said, my nose is going to be all over the place because there's a lot of them. Drops her phone, picks it up while our pillar appears. And at home, she talks staminato in a glass of water. And he says he'll always be by her side, like he promised. Whenever he calls, she calls for him, which is by singing their song. And hanako tells him that everyone's doing well. And then she's like, oh, hey, by the way, what's your phone's passcode to get in? And he says he always, yeah, my notes are all over place. She asked for his passcode, and she wants to know why he went surfing by himself. Because that's dangerous to do. Because of exactly what happens. You can drown, or even if you're the best swimmer, a riptide can take you out. And he tells her that he was practicing in secret so he could surprise her one day and just like, he wouldn't be holding her back so they could serve together at the same skill level. And he's like, oh, you want to know my passcode? I thought I raised a girlfriend better than someone who would look at someone else's phone. I was like, yo, that's fucked. What do you mean you raised a girlfriend? I was like, that's bad. Yeah, that's nasty choice of words there.

39:04.990 --> 39:12.118
I feel like, cutesy thing you're going for, but just that choice is just very uncomfortable.

39:12.214 --> 39:23.530
Yeah, I feel like at this point, too, it's just, like, clear that this is just in her head, because she probably would have told her his passcode if it was actually his ghost.

39:23.610 --> 39:27.106
Yeah, it's 1234, but it's like, now here's a reason for it to be.

39:27.208 --> 39:36.020
All so it's probably like a self deprecation thing of like, you weren't a good girlfriend, but yeah, terrible way to say it.

39:38.310 --> 40:13.786
She's just like, oh, I fell in the river. Like, I got to go washed up. I'll go take a bath. She just runs in the bathroom to take a bath, and she's all excited, think about, like, oh, I can talk to my boyfriend again. We can spend time together now that I know how to contact him. And she starts she says his last name, like, hinako. Hinakeshi. And she gets about marriage and stuff. And as she's, like, filling up the tub, she gets in it and starts just absent mindedly singing the song. And when she does, sure enough, he appears and she jumps out and breaks down like, what are you doing in there?

40:13.828 --> 40:14.082
Perfect.

40:14.136 --> 40:18.340
He's like, you brought me here. You did this.

40:18.950 --> 40:32.600
My favorite trope. Clearly bringing him into the situation where he had no choice and then being like, you perfect. It hits so good every time.

40:32.970 --> 41:03.710
Also, we had sex. I know what you look like. So then we see, like, a little bit of montage of hanako going. She gets, like, a water bottle so she can carry them around with her all the time. And she's showing off like, there's your fire station. Look, everyone's there. And she goes to, like, a bookstore and talking to them at a cafe, like, across the table. And during this whole time, we see people noticing her. And like, Wasabi sees her at the fire station like, oh, she's talking to a water bottle bottle. That's normal.

41:03.870 --> 41:06.514
No kidding, she's not. Okay.

41:06.712 --> 41:43.534
He's not coping well. And then she's showing him around everywhere. And then once back at her place, they fill up the inflatable full of water so the big porpoise is full of water. And we see monado appear in it. And they start dancing around her apartment. And this is the image I saw. I saw just a big inflatable dolphin fellow with a ghost inside of him for the promotional image. I'm like, I don't know what the fuck this movie is about, but I'm in. And then it's like he's a ghost in an inflatable pool toy. And I'm like, oh, I thought it was a weird water cryptic shit. I thought it was the shape of water.

41:43.732 --> 41:46.302
Come on, be a water prince or something.

41:46.436 --> 41:51.050
Something. Let's be weird. Let's get weird. I'm sick of patrick's way ghost.

41:51.130 --> 41:52.538
It's supernatural.

41:52.634 --> 41:55.594
I've seen ghost. I've seen the ponder scene.

41:55.722 --> 41:58.958
It's been done in animation. Fresh.

41:59.054 --> 42:01.758
We need some fresh. I need land dolphins.

42:01.934 --> 42:05.780
All these kids out here are horny for mothman. We need more stuff.

42:08.090 --> 42:26.940
Oh, God. I've been making a mothman DND character lately. Maybe I am already for mothman. I wasn't prepared for this. So we see them dancing around her apartment, and it's very cute. And we get a montage of her taking him everywhere in the dolphin suit. And it's like, on a bus. And people are like, what the fuck's happening?

42:27.390 --> 42:32.922
Introduce everyone in the city to my dead boyfriend wearing a beluga suit.

42:32.986 --> 43:46.458
It's really weird looking. And I'm glad they have the random people looking at her like, what the hell? This isn't normal. And while out for a trip, while out, she trips, like walking over Step and montana goes to help her up, but he can't because he's in a Forbesuit. And then the stranger like that she tripped over his foot, helps her up. And he's like, oh, sorry about that. Are you okay? And they start chatting up a bit, and it's like the first time mental realizes, like, I'm a ghost. I can't really help her. I can't be there for her. This isn't a relationship that could sustain itself. So we see them at beach watching sunset, and he asked about her tripping, and she's like, oh, you get jealous and start seizing about that because she was talking to the stranger a bit. And he's like, no. He's like, But I do have one request. Take me to the sea one more time so I could see a surf. And she's like, shit. Okay. So he cut to them at the beach, but she's still traumatized. She can't bring herself to surf because he died at the beach. And when I was like, Sorry, I probably should have realized it's less traumatic.

43:46.494 --> 43:49.110
Sorry I traumatized you, sweetheart.

43:49.610 --> 45:02.080
It's less traumatizing for me because I'm the one that died. I don't have to deal with these emotions. I'm still in it. And he says that he's just one wave in the ocean for her and that he'll help her until she can learn to ride her own wave, like, on her own. And then we get a sequence of them dancing underwater. I think back in our apartment, it's the bathtub. Like, water rises up to, like, a big floating cube. And then she walks into us so they can dance underwater together. We see wasabi go back to the cafe, and now we see that monado's sisters working there. And they talk about hanako a bit. He's like, I don't know. I think she's still having a rough time. What do you think I should do? And his sister is clearly just like, you're talking about other girls to me. Why bother? Very clearly, I'm just bothered by talking about hanako. And he tells her. He's like, yeah, I've seen her around town, and she's not doing great. She's talking to water bottles and has a big inflatable porpoise. And we see back to the montage of her around town with him, and he was following her the whole time, watching her.

45:02.930 --> 45:03.930
Weirdo.

45:04.090 --> 45:39.526
Yeah. But if I saw my friend's ex walking around an inflatable porpoise, like, talking to it in a warm out, yeah, I'd be like, what's that? I want to keep an eye on this, if nothing else, just to see what happens. And his sister gets mad, and she's like, well, if you're so obsessed with Hanaka, I want to go talk to her directly if you're so interested in her. Good day, sir. He's like, okay, I guess I will. So he goes to the flower shop, and he returns to the towel she gave them back when they first met. And she's like, oh, that was you? I didn't realize it. He's like, how do you not realize it was me?

45:39.708 --> 45:41.590
I thought that was so funny.

45:42.810 --> 45:59.680
Yeah, it was a great line. And I think that's perfect for Honato, because it's like, yeah, you're just like you ran a firefighter. I got directions from one day, and she didn't realize who he was until she started hanging out with Manato more. So it's like, yeah, I think that's perfectly reasonable. But it's just funny of like, I love you and you didn't notice me.

46:00.050 --> 46:01.934
You haven't been thinking about me since.

46:01.972 --> 46:10.740
That moment while you're dating my best friend and then he died and you've been coping with that this whole time? You haven't thought about me at all? No, you fucking come on.

46:11.830 --> 46:15.380
But my feeling but I'm a nice guy.

46:18.870 --> 47:10.680
He goes in to buy flowers, and she's like, oh, what kind of flowers do you want? It's like, oh, buying them for somebody who really looked at the ocean. Something of, like, some blue and white flowers. And she's like, okay. And she starts picking out, like, a bouquet. And he starts asking her, and it's like, hey, I saw you around with the water bottle and the inflatable dolphin or a porpoise and, are you talking to manado? Do you think he's back? Are you okay? And she's like, you saw all that? He's like, yeah, little worried. And she's like, well, I guess you should just take these flowers and get on and give them to somebody before they dry out and die. And he's like, oh, now that she's trying to get rid of them, he's like, actually, these flowers are for you, so you can take them. And she's like, what do you mean? And he just says, like, am I not good enough for you? Can I not be the one that cheers you up? He's like, I've always liked you. And it just says fucking bro. What the fuck? Not the fucking time, man.

47:11.290 --> 47:26.298
So I see you're carrying around and talking to your dead boyfriend, my coworker friend. I think now is a good time to ask you out, confess my about this freak out of this guy. You are clearly not over.

47:26.384 --> 47:32.602
Like, this guy is not in the movie enough for me to be like, yo, this guy fucking sucks. But it's like, yo, this is a really bad moment.

47:32.656 --> 47:40.778
Weird, because mostly he is a nice guy, like, genuinely. But it's this point where you're just like, come on, dude.

47:40.874 --> 49:28.002
Dude, not now. So understandably. She freaks out and runs to the bathroom, which I think we all would do at this moment. And she like, panics and starts starts singing the song to someone. Manato. And she's talking home in the toilet. And Manato says she's like, your buddy just confessed to me, like, that he likes me. What do I do? He's like, well, he's kind and he's an earnest guy and he's a hard worker. And she says, like, yeah, that's fine, but I'm good with you. Like, you you're my boyfriend still. And I was like, yo, you're talking to a toilet right now. You're clearly not fine. And when he says that, she looks over at the door and her boss, like, cracked open the door to hear who she was talking to. And she slams it shut. She's like, okay, clearly I am not fine, but, like, I don't want him. I want you. And he says, there are many other waves, and not all of them are good, so there will always be a farewell, but you can always just dive underneath the wave and keep moving forward like you do when you're surfing. She's like shit. Okay. He goes back out to see Wasabi, but he already left. So she goes running after him, like, Wait, Wasabi, hold on. I got to talk to you. And we see him just moping on a bridge nearby. And I was like, oh, God, he's going to jump. And while he's there, he hears nakka running after him. And as he turns, he's like, what's that? And we just hear, like, a bridge screech. You're like, oh, God, I can't stop. And it just fucking crashes into a car. And they're both immediately on fire. What the fuck happens? I thought it was hinako running across the street, but she's like, a good bit down the road. She's nowhere near it. So it's like what? What happened to this truck? And once there's the accident and the truck's on fire, wasabi runs over to her and protects her because then, of course, the truck explodes, as it does with every car that's on fire ever.

49:28.136 --> 49:32.286
Yeah, every fender bender immediately explodes instantly.

49:32.318 --> 49:34.398
I play fender like a head on collision.

49:34.574 --> 49:35.300
Yeah.

49:36.630 --> 49:39.700
I've rarely seen cars just burst into the flames so quickly.

49:40.710 --> 49:45.174
It's an anime with a ghost breakwater. I don't think we need to talk.

49:45.212 --> 49:48.018
About where I draw the line. This is my suspect.

49:48.034 --> 49:52.794
And also, if a car is on fire, isn't there a chance that will explode because of the gas and whatever?

49:52.992 --> 50:50.586
There might be the tanks. She's in the back to get fired. She should have anyway. Yeah. The truck crashes into, like, a smaller car, and Hanaku says, like, there's someone still in the smaller car. They might die. We should go save them. Was obviously like, no, that's too dangerous. Like, we can't go in there. And while they're arguing, Hanaka just starts singing her song to someone. minato, who the water pillar rises up from the bridge and puts out the fire on the truck and the small car. And they're like, there the fire is out. It's good. And then we see the ambulance show up and pull someone out of the small car. And they put him on a stretcher. And as they pull him out, we just see his ghost go up into heaven, like, into the clouds. And it's like, oh, okay. So he died. But then the pillar walk because minato was still there with the water. He also starts getting sucked up into heaven. I was like, oh, no. He's going to go before he's ready. Like that's fucking wild he did.

50:50.608 --> 50:52.250
By my own pattay.

50:53.230 --> 50:54.290
He got sang.

50:54.390 --> 50:59.070
It's been seen by God. I've been evading his grasp for months.

50:59.220 --> 51:45.600
It's been a stealth game this whole time. And he finally got caught it does a solid gear, solid alert noise and put it in. And Hanaka starts yelling because she sees him going away. And it's like, oh no, he's disappearing too. And Wasabi is like, you got to accept he's gone and you got to move on. She's like, no, and refuses. And she says Wasabi says, hanako, if hanako is like, this manato can never move on. Basically saying like if you keep thinking about him, he's always going to be the ghost. He can't go on to heaven. And she freaks out and runs home to talk to minato in the dolphin suit. And he appears. Like she puts the water in and he appears. But he's like really weak. He like weakly says her name. And I'm just like, part of him got sucked into heaven. He's weak. He got fucked up by God.

51:46.210 --> 51:47.950
He got the heaven suck.

51:49.810 --> 51:51.630
The holiest of sucks.

51:52.850 --> 51:57.860
Jesus pulled me up and you've been partying. I'm too hung over to talk.

51:59.990 --> 52:02.594
Up there. hinako, please let me leave.

52:02.792 --> 52:07.446
I get real fucked up on that blood of Christ. It's just blind. It's not blood at all.

52:07.628 --> 52:12.806
I can immediately throw away this relationship though. Heaven is way better than anything on earth.

52:12.908 --> 52:18.022
It's so chill. And she basically just apologizes for what she's been putting him through.

52:18.156 --> 52:43.714
So yeah, but yeah, so she then like the the tether is weakened, so to say. But she goes to visit his sister working at the cafe. She's like acting all professional of like, please don't doubt about my dead brother. Can I just have a normal work interaction with you?

52:43.752 --> 52:45.810
One shift. Just one shift.

52:46.870 --> 53:09.510
And she's saying that she decided to keep working at the cafe because it was Miniato's dream to open up a cafe like this. So she's going to do it and do that for her. So she's got a soft spot. Finally a likable side to this character.

53:10.350 --> 53:12.700
One side, the other nine are bad.

53:13.150 --> 53:44.498
So they go to her house. hinako apparently did not go. She was too grief stricken after the funeral to go and officially pay her respects. So she's seeing the house for the first time and she gets to go see minato's untouched room. So goes in just so many books and just a bullshit weight bench in.

53:44.504 --> 53:45.438
The middle of it.

53:45.544 --> 53:48.520
So he's smart but strong.

53:49.530 --> 53:52.338
He's got it all sensitive and dead.

53:52.434 --> 53:53.398
Oh, wow.

53:53.564 --> 54:02.042
The whole package. And then we immediately talk about how he learned to cook. So yeah, just really like, hey, remember.

54:02.096 --> 54:06.780
Takes care of his sister, how great my dead brother was.

54:10.430 --> 54:32.580
They start talking about his work ethic of like he saw that turtle and he had to be strong and just going into yeah. He got so dedicated to being good and helping people because he was saved by a girl from drowning when he was a boy.

54:33.510 --> 54:35.506
Who could that be?

54:35.688 --> 54:36.850
His sister.

54:39.910 --> 54:52.938
Real plot twist. I think. She sees like a picture of his swimsuit that has like a turtle on it. I don't know, there's a lot going on here.

54:53.024 --> 54:54.534
It's a lot of turtle imagery.

54:54.662 --> 55:12.126
Yeah, but she's struck with like, wait, that sounds familiar. Wait, that sounds familiar. And just like runs. Yeah, she just sprints to her mom's house. She travels home, takes up everyone's suggestion of, hey, take a break, just go.

55:12.148 --> 55:13.022
Away for a while.

55:13.156 --> 55:22.466
So she goes back to her mom's house and starts digging through photo albums and is like, hey, mom, weird question. Hi, I know I haven't seen you.

55:22.488 --> 55:24.206
In six months and my boyfriend died.

55:24.238 --> 56:16.790
And whatnot, did I ever save a boy when I was a little girl? And she's like, oh, yeah, we have that newspaper clipping somewhere. So yeah, it was her. So we get the story. We get a flashback of she was going out to surf. His, like, hat fell in the water. He had to try to swim down and started drowning. And she saved him, but she had a purpose. A porpoise surfboard has a cute little porpoise on it. And he had a turtle swimming suit. Yeah, imagery, name imagery. But she's the reason that's his favorite dad.

56:17.770 --> 56:23.000
Oh, jasper, sorry, someone ring my doorbell. And then jasper shrieking out, got you.

56:23.530 --> 56:36.646
So she heads back into the town and she's like, oh, wait, let me try something. The date of me saving this boy, is that yes, that's a passcode. That's his phone passcode. That's his phone passer.

56:36.678 --> 56:36.886
Voice.

56:36.918 --> 56:50.702
I'm in. So what she sees is an unsent text that he was writing her. It's the text he was writing when he ran in and saved at least tried to save the people.

56:50.836 --> 56:53.858
Yeah. We don't know what happens to the Jessica. He might have died too.

56:54.024 --> 57:04.420
Yeah, no one really cares. It's fine. So he's saying that he surfed and while he was out there that morning.

57:05.190 --> 57:07.822
He did big old flip.

57:07.966 --> 57:09.860
He did a christ aired nine.

57:13.050 --> 57:14.550
And that's how he died.

57:16.570 --> 57:19.818
The biggest trick of all is you have to die during the christ air.

57:19.984 --> 57:35.210
Yeah. But he's like, yeah, I'm going to stay by your side forever, baby, until you can ride your own way. Yeah, I'm the one for you. I'm the ideal boyfriend.

57:35.370 --> 57:37.680
Nothing bad will ever happen to me.

57:38.770 --> 57:40.080
I feel great.

57:41.250 --> 58:09.590
I need to cancel my life insurance. So, yeah, she goes in and sees that and on the train back she looks up like jobs where you save people. And this was some of the bit where that was the only thing that was translated. So I think she got like lifeguard training. I think that was her destination.

58:09.670 --> 58:12.794
I don't know, paramedic or something.

58:12.912 --> 58:16.022
Yeah, we'll say lifeguard.

58:16.166 --> 58:16.522
Yeah.

58:16.576 --> 58:53.462
So she's going to take some lifeguarding classes and goes and meets with the instructor who's showing around saying, like, yeah, we're the line of defense on the beach. That works for a surfer like you. You're a good swimmer. Okay, so we see that the sister meets Wasabi on the beach while he's running. Oh, another hunk that just loves to exercise, even if it's sensitive. So she ambushes him and is like, have breakfast with me.

58:53.596 --> 58:54.470
Got you.

58:54.620 --> 58:59.100
I know you immediately were running 10 seconds ago, but now eat food.

58:59.550 --> 59:02.940
She dropped down from the White House with a net and just tried to I got you.

59:05.870 --> 59:18.560
So talking about minato and asking why Wasabi wanted to join being a firefighter, he's like, oh, it just seemed cool.

59:19.330 --> 59:20.400
I don't know.

59:22.210 --> 59:23.306
So admirable.

59:23.418 --> 59:24.080
Yeah.

59:25.010 --> 59:48.390
He's like, but I'll have a cool back story reason. Like, I guess I'll never be the protagonist. Basically always the comedic best friend, just destined to be luigi mom of mia. My name is Wasabi. How can you take that seriously?

59:49.610 --> 59:51.420
It's a condom, man.

59:52.910 --> 01:00:07.360
So the sister is like, hey, shut up. Live your own fucking life. Don't live and die by my brother. He's gone. Be your own person. Also, I love you. Goodbye. And runs away.

01:00:08.530 --> 01:00:33.560
I do like that she says back to him the words that he said to her when she was struggling with school. We did find out that out earlier in the movie where she struggles school. And he's the one that talked her back into go back to school. And she reiterates what he said back to him to kind of motivate his ass to be like, stop living into my brother's shadow. Which I thought was a nice even though they're side characters and they're not the protagonist, I did think this was a very short but nice story.

01:00:34.010 --> 01:00:51.242
Yeah, but yeah. So a cute little moment. Let's go back to those rebellious firework kids. They're at the cafe openly talking about the crimes they're going to commit that night.

01:00:51.296 --> 01:00:52.970
I'm going to commit felonies.

01:00:53.470 --> 01:01:02.410
Oh, I can't wait to do fireworks in this even bigger abandoned building. No one here listens to us.

01:01:02.580 --> 01:01:04.194
I can't wait to commit arson and.

01:01:04.232 --> 01:01:19.510
Accidental manslaughter for the bind checkov's. Dumb waiter we see at the bottom of it. The sister is listening and can hear their plans.

01:01:22.490 --> 01:01:25.270
She is like, oh, fuck.

01:01:26.810 --> 01:01:28.134
I'm going to get these folks.

01:01:28.182 --> 01:01:29.100
Catch them.

01:01:29.710 --> 01:01:57.090
So she leaves. hinako comes to visit, and she's like, not now. Come with me. And they both trail the teens. They're on the bus following them. Apparently there's this giant abandoned building that has like a big tree in it. It was like a big nature thing. And now it's abandoned. And the trees it's the best idea.

01:01:57.160 --> 01:02:04.034
To shoot off fireworks inside of a huge building with a dead dry tree inside.

01:02:04.232 --> 01:02:08.100
Yeah, 50 foot kindling, just ready to go.

01:02:08.950 --> 01:02:22.698
I know there's like a water ghost and all, but this seems like the most outlandish part of the movie to me. I'm like, what fucking city just let this giant abandoned grain silo full of pine tree just rot away for who knows how long.

01:02:22.864 --> 01:02:29.350
And they're also like, yeah, we set a building on fire. Last year, but who cares? Let's go bigger.

01:02:29.430 --> 01:02:37.374
They specifically say like, this one guy ran away because he's a bitch. It's like, well, the other guy got arrested and the only reason I'm not arrested is because I ran away.

01:02:37.412 --> 01:02:41.070
It's like, stop being proud of this, you're asshole.

01:02:41.570 --> 01:02:43.230
Stop being so loud.

01:02:45.030 --> 01:03:13.238
But yeah, so they follow them into the building. hinako makes the extremely rational point of, hey, this isn't our fucking job. Can we call the cops or someone qualified to handle this? And the sister is like, no, we need evidence and not the evidence that there's going to be fireworks coming out of here by the time the police arrive. But okay, yeah, they already are trespassing.

01:03:13.334 --> 01:03:16.554
They've already done the crime. That's evident. Like, you were good.

01:03:16.592 --> 01:03:17.900
Yeah, that's true.

01:03:18.430 --> 01:03:29.722
Also, real quick, when they're going into the building, there's one dude standing outside at the entrance and the two girls just walk in and he doesn't do anything. He is a bad bouncer.

01:03:29.866 --> 01:03:33.940
Yeah, I didn't know what was going on with that. I didn't want to touch it.

01:03:34.310 --> 01:03:35.074
It bothered me.

01:03:35.112 --> 01:03:37.314
Probably just like, hey, more girls, more.

01:03:37.352 --> 01:04:19.582
Girls, come on in. But yeah, so they of course start lighting off the fireworks and what do you know? Immediately fine. So they all skedaddle, but one of the fireworks shut off and hurt the sister's leg so she can't go anywhere convenient. Hiniko is like texting wasabi to be like, hey, only fireman I know, hell fire. And right after the call comes in that there's a fire. So did it help? Not really, no.

01:04:19.716 --> 01:04:27.346
Because she's been texting him all day, like being like, hey, I'm seeing these guys who set that fire last year. They're going to do it again.

01:04:27.448 --> 01:04:30.514
But he just hasn't been looking because he's working.

01:04:30.632 --> 01:04:33.294
Unlike he's at war, he's a firefighter.

01:04:33.342 --> 01:04:38.734
Hey, what if we fucking call 911 and got the actual authorities whose job it is to stop this?

01:04:38.872 --> 01:04:41.574
No, I'm trying to make him fall in love with me.

01:04:41.772 --> 01:04:42.520
Exactly.

01:04:44.170 --> 01:05:45.270
But yeah, the fire department goes and just fucking clowns around for they're like, okay, we're here. The front door locked. Let's pick the lock. Okay, let's go in. Oh, we don't have water for the hoses. Let me leave you alone in the fire. Let me go back and figure out what the fuck is up. And of course wasabi is in there and the water turns on and just like fucking crazy daisies around for a bit. Just some real buffooner in this third act. So we see. She said my notes just have fuck up a bunch. So I'm trying to get past that.

01:05:45.420 --> 01:05:49.194
I mean, we're conveying the fuck upper of the scene right now.

01:05:49.392 --> 01:06:32.022
So the girls are waiting at the top and hinako is like, oh, maybe I can summon the one power I have to help and start singing the song. And Minajo arrives and he's like, don't worry, I got this. And just takes all of the fucking water in the world and just envelops, like, maybe ten full stories of this, like, skyscraper at a time and just, like, moves up and sucks up all of the fire and also partially drowns some of the people. But they seem chill with it, so it's fine. Don't worry.

01:06:32.166 --> 01:06:33.146
You all know me.

01:06:33.168 --> 01:06:45.118
So anxious to see the firefighters with their gas masks on underwater. I was like, oh, God. I can't even imagine how claustrophobic that would feel.

01:06:45.204 --> 01:06:51.710
I mean, firefighter suits are pretty lightweight, right? They're not known to be fucking heavy, so you can swim in them easily.

01:06:52.130 --> 01:06:54.894
Oh, God, I hadn't even thought of that.

01:06:54.932 --> 01:07:00.670
I'm surprised they didn't just sink to the ground and the water just went past them as it was going up. Like, yeah, that'd be easier.

01:07:00.830 --> 01:07:08.450
Yeah, they just felt a lot of pressure because they were stuck at the bottom of this 18 Olympic size swimming pools.

01:07:08.530 --> 01:07:09.160
Yeah.

01:07:09.930 --> 01:07:31.786
So, yeah, the water rises up and gets to the top and sucks up the girls. And finally his sister can see him. He's like, hey, I'm going to save you. I'm going to slowly drift you down the way I came up. Just kidding. You're going to slip off the side of this fucking skyscraper.

01:07:31.898 --> 01:07:33.310
It's so scary.

01:07:34.690 --> 01:07:58.402
Two things. A, I love the season one finale of avatar with the waterspier going on rampage. B, Hanaka also has kind of like the medical board for what that was supposed to be. I've seen them before. They're like lifeguards, like, at the beach to put a body on the water so it will float. Where did that come from?

01:07:58.536 --> 01:08:03.202
Yeah, they were like, in the building, so that's why I thought I was like, maybe it's like wood.

01:08:03.346 --> 01:08:04.520
That would make sense.

01:08:05.050 --> 01:08:08.234
But it's shaped specifically like that, so I don't know.

01:08:08.272 --> 01:08:09.930
Yeah, it looks like a surfboard.

01:08:10.910 --> 01:08:24.558
Yeah. She finally gets to ride her wave, which is just surfing down the monster of all monster waves just off of this 100 story building.

01:08:24.724 --> 01:08:25.950
So insane.

01:08:27.010 --> 01:08:28.830
It's cool, though. It's very pretty.

01:08:28.900 --> 01:08:41.486
It's visually stunning. But if I was his sister and I was on that board and I look at it, a wave, and I just see the cityscape, and I'm like, 100 floors up, I would be terrified. I would have just passed out and just fallen and just dropped.

01:08:41.678 --> 01:08:42.654
I was terrified.

01:08:42.702 --> 01:08:52.498
Anyway, I'm just thinking of minato being like, hey, I finally have this perfect set up for my surfer girlfriend.

01:08:52.594 --> 01:08:53.062
Oh, no.

01:08:53.116 --> 01:09:00.220
My sister wasn't supposed to be here. This is going to suck for you because you don't know anything about surfing. So just hang on.

01:09:00.990 --> 01:09:03.340
Just pray to whoever your God is.

01:09:03.870 --> 01:09:50.090
But yeah. Since finally got to have hinako ride her own wave, his purpose is completed, and the rest of him can go up to heaven. The other husband rendered in two, and he's been in excruciating pain ever since the day at the bridge. And finally his soul can be laid to rest. But yeah. So we time skip finale time. That, of course, means it's Christmas, so hinako past her. They just say, like, life saving class. That's nothing.

01:09:50.240 --> 01:09:52.022
She's a certified saver.

01:09:52.166 --> 01:10:01.740
Yeah. She's head lifeguard at the beach at a water park at.

01:10:04.050 --> 01:10:06.362
Schlitter Bond. She's moving to Texas.

01:10:06.506 --> 01:10:07.630
Schlitter Bond.

01:10:07.970 --> 01:10:15.630
So they go out and celebrate with the classic omelet dinner.

01:10:16.530 --> 01:10:17.630
And they cry.

01:10:20.390 --> 01:11:09.698
They have to throw in. Oh, yeah. They caught those fireworks guys. Cool. And Wasabi and the sister are officially dating now, so they're doing cutesy stuff. They go to the tower that has hinako's and minato's lock in it and Wasabi is like, hey, we should go up and seriously? Yeah, it's stumb. Okay, let's go. More quirkiness there. But yeah, it's just hinako standing there alone. She sees a little puddle pond and she sings to it. Nothing comes because he's having fun in heaven and no longer in pain.

01:11:09.864 --> 01:11:15.006
He's ripping bongs of Jesus. It's lit as fuck out there. Yeah.

01:11:15.048 --> 01:11:17.880
The only water he deals with now is bong water.

01:11:19.450 --> 01:11:21.560
I love how we're ruining this morning.

01:11:22.570 --> 01:12:01.140
But yeah, I needed you to reiterate that they talked about the announcer at this tower earlier in the first act during the set up. Because while she's standing there, a big announcement comes out and is like, happy anniversary to hinako. Ha ha. Your boyfriend planned something like a year ago. Happy anniversary. And of course, she starts crying into the puddle. And then we see her surfing and then the movie ends and that's it.

01:12:01.990 --> 01:12:04.382
I think it was supposed to be a proposal.

01:12:04.526 --> 01:12:05.266
Yeah.

01:12:05.448 --> 01:12:10.070
But you would have had the ring there ready, like, when she turned around.

01:12:10.140 --> 01:12:10.760
Yeah.

01:12:11.130 --> 01:12:16.038
Maybe my last night was just fucking fucking time.

01:12:16.124 --> 01:12:24.938
Yeah. Imagine if she wasn't there. She wouldn't have had to hear that. She wouldn't have been so upset. Happened to be there.

01:12:25.024 --> 01:12:35.840
I totally forgot about that. So just this random announcement coming out, being like, Girlfriend, a year ago, we were here. I was like, what is going on? Yeah, that makes a lot more sense.

01:12:36.850 --> 01:12:41.600
I really should wish to come back to his sister, Wasabi. And they hear that announcement and just like.

01:12:43.570 --> 01:12:47.140
We'Re staying up here until she goes away because we can't help her.

01:12:47.750 --> 01:12:49.700
They're just booking it. Yeah.

01:12:50.630 --> 01:12:57.314
Don't look back. Don't acknowledge it. Just keep running. Oh, God. Rough stuff.

01:12:57.512 --> 01:13:07.622
Yeah. I kind of, like, dig that. That's, like, how it ends, though. That she's, like, still that she hears that and she's, like, still upset about it. Because that's how grief works.

01:13:07.756 --> 01:13:11.766
Yeah. It's not just her being like, Never get over it. I remember that one.

01:13:11.788 --> 01:13:12.982
Close to you dies.

01:13:13.126 --> 01:13:14.874
Yeah. She's not like I remember that point.

01:13:14.912 --> 01:13:23.482
I dated for a moment. Yeah. You see her hear something that reminds you of them and that's what happens. She just melts. It's terrible.

01:13:23.546 --> 01:13:28.798
It's a wave. It hits you in waves. And it's just like, oh, I forgot about that. Looks like I'm crying today.

01:13:28.964 --> 01:13:31.802
Yeah, but yeah, that's the movie.

01:13:31.866 --> 01:13:33.150
That's the movie.

01:13:33.590 --> 01:13:35.566
How are we feeling, weeb?

01:13:35.758 --> 01:13:36.722
Better yet.

01:13:36.856 --> 01:14:10.586
Yeah, I'm compromised. So I'm going to recuse myself from this section. So listener, it's up to you on time. I will preface this. That everyone's okay. Everyone's doing great. But the recording for this episode was a day after Christmas. The Christmas where I learned that my firefighter father from a beach town got COVID. So this hit real different from how it was supposed to. So we had to I also want.

01:14:10.608 --> 01:14:14.942
To say that that wasn't planned. I didn't pick this after I found out about it.

01:14:14.996 --> 01:14:16.442
It was planned. Way to bear.

01:14:16.586 --> 01:14:19.230
That was happy accident.

01:14:24.230 --> 01:14:26.082
A terrible coincidence, more like.

01:14:26.136 --> 01:14:26.546
Yeah.

01:14:26.648 --> 01:14:36.580
So I'm going to sit this one out because I took this so many different ways that the movie wasn't going for. I'm not going to hold it against it.

01:14:37.610 --> 01:14:38.022
Sure.

01:14:38.076 --> 01:14:43.240
At the end of the movie, it said, Dedicated to Patrick durgan, which hit real weird because they didn't know.

01:14:43.690 --> 01:14:48.840
Yeah, my version, they dubbed in over that announcement. Oh, Patrick. Hello.

01:14:50.810 --> 01:15:31.160
Fuck you. I watching it. I really enjoyed it. I think talking about it sounds a little silly just because it takes turns that are silly, but watching it is a different experience and I enjoyed it. Overall, I thought their relationship was amazing and that they established it so well. Just in that montage is really lovely. And like I just said, I like that it's like not as the night. Writing her wave isn't just finding her purpose, it's like writing her wave of grief and that ebb and flow. And I enjoyed it.

01:15:31.690 --> 01:16:09.154
Yeah, I enjoyed how they shared it because we've definitely seen enough anime cover romance very poorly. So the fact that it was done well and it's like, oh, this is very cute and wholesome and believable. You could see them spending so much time together and we see each part of their relationship growing a bit and stuff. I did remember because at the end I forgot. I was like, if he didn't know her and he just like, ran into her, this is very cute. If he knew who she was the whole time and that she was the girl that saved him 16 years ago and he's just been following her this whole time and keeping up with her, this got real creepy real fast.

01:16:09.352 --> 01:16:18.438
Well, I don't think that that is the case because she moved away and came back. So I think he was happy to see that she was back and he was like, now's my chance.

01:16:18.604 --> 01:16:31.740
Yeah, it's just like if I saw a girl when I was six and then 20 years later, 15 years later, I just see a random girl bike by my place of work and I'm like, that's the girl that saved me. Like, what?

01:16:32.350 --> 01:16:34.262
I also saw her surfing, not biking.

01:16:34.326 --> 01:16:37.754
By, but yeah, it's just like I don't know.

01:16:37.792 --> 01:16:44.750
I don't know. I understand where you're coming from, but I also don't think it's as creepy because we also don't know when she moved.

01:16:46.050 --> 01:16:48.526
She could have moved in high school or something.

01:16:48.628 --> 01:16:51.214
He could have known who she was or whatever.

01:16:51.332 --> 01:16:51.902
Yeah.

01:16:52.036 --> 01:16:58.802
But like I said, I get that their relationship is good. It doesn't feel creepy to me.

01:16:58.856 --> 01:17:09.666
No, it's definitely not the intention. But just whenever someone's like, I know everything about you and the other person's, like, I know nothing about you, that always makes me feel uncomfortable. No matter the way I also feel.

01:17:09.688 --> 01:17:12.486
Like that's not the case either. I feel like he doesn't feel that way.

01:17:12.588 --> 01:17:12.950
Yeah.

01:17:13.020 --> 01:17:21.100
I think he's just like, she saved me. I really look up to her, and I am in love with her because she saved me, so I have a connection to her.

01:17:21.870 --> 01:17:25.578
The porpoise car and the purpose phone and the Porpoise charm, and it's just.

01:17:25.584 --> 01:17:27.450
Like it made an impact on him.

01:17:27.520 --> 01:17:28.140
Yeah.

01:17:29.150 --> 01:17:35.498
It's not like he stalked her. That's how I feel about it. He didn't I don't know what he did.

01:17:35.664 --> 01:17:39.070
He only did it because this can just go back and forth forever.

01:17:39.490 --> 01:17:48.850
No. Yeah. It's definitely cute. When I realize he's always known her, I'm like, that kind of changes my perspective on it. It is still very cute and wholesome.
