And that feature is called Contact Photos. And what that is is when you open up mail and then you'll see the list of all the people that sent you email. Next to their name on the left side you will see a contact photo. This is the same photo that shows up in their profile in your address book to represent that person. So some people like this and it's pretty cool and other people don't. So if you don't like it and you'd prefer to have extra real estate, the way you turn this off would be go Settings, then go all the way down to Apps, then go into Mail. Then you'll see down at the bottom turn on or off Contact Photos. So if it's on, you can turn it off.
