And welcome to Play comics, where once again, we are looking at a video game based on a comic property and how well it represents that source material. This time, we are reaching all the way across the ocean, or in my case, over lots of pieces of land and the ocean and some more land and some more ocean, because we have to go all the way over to Japan to look at a game that did not come out over here in North America. But we're looking at it anyway because I have people who wanted to look at it, and I kind of wanted to look at it too, but I didn't want to ask everybody because, yeah, we have two returning guests today. One of them is Billy. You've heard him before. Looking at Batman and Robin, Ghost in the shell, mutant Academy, a few different versions to rock, two seeds of evil, and most importantly for this episode, Gundam battle assault two. The other guest is Erin. You have heard her looking at Gundam side story, double O 79, rise from the ashes. I'm still not sure if I'm saying that you're right, but it sounds good to me.

01:59.202 --> 02:00.138
It works.

02:00.266 --> 02:09.970
It does. And what else works is I have two great people here who I'm legitimately friends with, and they get to make fun of me for still not knowing about Gundam.

02:10.082 --> 02:14.804
And the best part about having friends is telling them about things you enjoy.

02:14.994 --> 02:43.464
That's why I have both of you here, because Gundam is starting to click. But I feel like we need to take a step back in time a little bit and go a little bit earlier into the game iteration of things. Which is why we're looking at Gundam wing endless duel, whose japanese name I am not going to try to pronounce because it has strange accent marks on it, and I don't know what those mean.

02:44.124 --> 02:48.684
I could give it a try, but I haven't heard it pronounced in a long time.

02:48.844 --> 02:50.384
Kido senkai.

02:50.684 --> 02:53.264
That's what I would guess without the accent marks.

02:53.764 --> 02:55.652
Shinkidosenki.

02:55.788 --> 02:57.764
Oh, that would be more Gundam, probably, yes.

02:57.804 --> 03:01.708
Gundam. Gundam wing endless duel.

03:01.876 --> 03:04.348
All I know is Shin means new.

03:04.516 --> 03:09.358
Yeah, that's fitting because I still consider myself a Gundam noob.

03:09.516 --> 03:13.694
Hey, you still haven't watched witch for mercury then?

03:14.074 --> 03:24.054
I still have not. We are in the middle of watching one piece lately a lot. Because it has been the kind of days where you just have to go home and watch one piece.

03:24.954 --> 03:26.650
To be fair, I haven't watched it.

03:26.722 --> 03:31.858
Either, so I'm not finished with it, but I've started it.

03:31.986 --> 03:58.044
Gundam Wing endless duel was based, very surprisingly, on the Gundam wing anime, which I have actually retained the knowledge that that is the series that came over here to America. Basically. First it was the one that was on Toonami and, you know, bootleg tapes, whatever. They. They were there whenever they were there. They don't count in the timeline. But please tell me I'm at least right about that.

03:58.464 --> 03:59.048
Yes.

03:59.136 --> 03:59.664
Yes.

03:59.784 --> 04:08.690
It was the first one that was released in the US on tv. Earlier ones being videos with that very.

04:08.762 --> 04:13.574
Iconic commercial on Toonami. Do you remember Toonami? I miss those days.

04:14.034 --> 04:20.586
What was it about Gundam Wing that just caught everyone's attention when it came out over here?

04:20.770 --> 04:54.454
One. I think people, Billy is right. Giant robots. I definitely think it. Giant robots is number one. Personally, I got into it through the fandom side because a lot of nerds in the late 1990s, early two thousands saw these very pretty, tortured young men and decided that they should write fanfic about them.

04:55.154 --> 04:56.294
That tracks.

04:56.914 --> 05:08.898
There were giant robots, bright colors, and a more serious plotline than basically any other cartoon going on at the time.

05:09.066 --> 05:16.122
Are you telling me that having five episodes being spent to charge up a punch from Goku is not serious plotlines?

05:16.298 --> 05:18.814
I think it's more punchline than plotline.

05:20.634 --> 05:21.534
Oh.

05:22.834 --> 05:26.042
Oh, well, that's the show.

05:26.218 --> 05:30.854
I heard the drum roll after the drum hit after it. It's all good.

05:31.434 --> 05:33.930
Oh, hey, I found a translation for the title.

05:34.042 --> 05:34.858
Okay.

05:35.026 --> 05:43.654
Gundam wing, endless duel. I think if I turned this in for a book report, I'd have gotten in trouble.

05:45.154 --> 05:55.804
You know, I don't actually know how those words fit into the Gundam series.

05:56.544 --> 05:58.404
Mostly a word salad.

05:58.704 --> 06:02.712
Yeah. Okay. Okay. That's what I thought.

06:02.888 --> 06:15.844
You have to remember a lot of times too, when mobile suit Gundam wing came out. Over here, we're talking mid to late nineties because I refuse to look it up at the moment.

06:16.344 --> 06:24.904
So it was released in 1995 in Japan and then released in the US in the two thousands.

06:25.604 --> 06:45.204
And there was absolutely nothing going on in the two thousands for us kids to be worrying and us parents to be worrying about having a cartoon focused on war and different cultures clashing over territory and colonialism type things and all of that other stuff, right?

06:45.364 --> 06:46.420
Oh, yeah. Nothing.

06:46.492 --> 07:49.498
Yeah. When I started out originally, I. I hadn't seen the full series because I didn't have cable. I was only able to watch episodes every so often, or when a friend had taped it on a vhs and let me borrow it. But I remember going back and rewatching the full series from start to finish, so, including all 49 episodes of the original series and then the. The final movie, endless waltz. And I was surprised at how political it was. And then I started watching other Gundam series, and I realized that the entire franchise is super political. I know that was also something that was pretty new for american audiences at the time, seeing kind of such depth within, or. Yeah, such depth within their animation, at least mainstream audiences.

07:49.666 --> 08:02.974
Other us action cartoons were, I was gonna say toy ads, but so's Gundam. It's just better written looks at shelf of gundams.

08:03.514 --> 08:10.694
Gi Joe, obviously also a toy ad. But you know that politicalness was all, yay, usually government.

08:11.514 --> 08:24.890
Yeah, there's more depth in this. Not a lot more depth, as wing is often considered one of the more shallow ones. But there's still a lot more depth than we were getting in anything else at the time.

08:25.042 --> 08:49.014
And let's also keep in mind that this is not a subject matter that is exactly foreign to a japanese audience. Just as one super prime example, Grave of the Fireflies, had come out in 1988. And if you can watch that movie without crying or wanting to curl up into a ball, then you're probably not a human.

08:49.514 --> 09:04.134
The first time, I will always tell the story, but the first time I watched that movie, I was in a public movie theater that was completely packed, and literally no one left the theater that day with a dry eye.

09:04.274 --> 09:11.582
I remember hearing that it was originally released as a double feature with, I want to say, my neighbor totoro.

09:11.718 --> 09:12.094
Yep.

09:12.134 --> 09:20.234
And I just remember thinking, like, which one did they show first? Which one should you show first? How do you do that?

09:20.734 --> 09:35.834
I think I remember reading about that, and I think fireflies came first, and then they had to. They had to make the happier one. They had to make totoro to make it happen.

09:36.294 --> 09:43.074
Yeah, I would not be surprised. You got to balance out the universe and you're, you know, putting the vibes out.

09:44.174 --> 09:53.194
Yep. Anyway, so Gundam. Gundam wing, Gundam wing. Endless waltz. Gundam wing. Endless duel.

09:53.774 --> 09:55.414
Important thing is, it's endless.

09:55.574 --> 09:57.554
Where does the waltz part come in? Though?

09:58.364 --> 10:18.396
History is much like an endless waltz, the three beats of war, peace, and revolution continue on forever. However, history will change upon the day of my coronation. Unfortunately, there is no coronation fully, and there is no unfortunately. I mean, from Marimeya's point of view.

10:18.460 --> 10:28.544
Yes, well, sure, but, you know, you probably shouldn't have ten year old puppet rulers taking over earth through war crimes.

10:28.914 --> 10:31.610
Yeah, I mean, I guess you're right.

10:31.762 --> 10:39.014
I can see where rulers getting to rule through war crimes and then performing war crimes would be a bad move.

10:39.314 --> 10:47.894
And I think that's kind of a. That's kind of a big part of the Gundam franchise overall, doing war crimes. Lots of war crimes, lots of puppet rulers.

10:48.474 --> 11:02.886
Yeah. Yeah. I don't know how much we want to talk about Gundam wing plot, but. Oh, boy. I even went deep on the extended universe stuff for this particular Gundam because there's a bunch of mangas, and I've read most of them.

11:03.030 --> 11:04.870
Have you read frozen teardrop?

11:05.062 --> 11:11.114
I have not read frozen teardrop. I missed frozen teardrop, and I haven't read glory of the losers.

11:11.414 --> 11:20.320
I refuse on principle to read Frozen Teardrop because it sounds absolutely bug nuts.

11:20.502 --> 11:21.388
In what way?

11:21.476 --> 11:22.384
Okay.

11:22.964 --> 11:47.624
There's something to do with cloning. It's like 20 years in the future, except the two main characters from Gundam from the Wing series are still teenagers. It's weird. And there's, like, xbs of all the original pilot characters. It's weird. Yeah. How much of wing do you want to go into?

11:48.194 --> 12:02.482
I want to go into it because this one is specifically based on that series and came out timed well with that series, and so it's just a perfect timeline lineup there.

12:02.658 --> 12:09.214
Oh, boy. Okay, Billy, do you want to start us off?

12:10.634 --> 12:53.004
So we got space colonies. They want to secede from Earth because they feel like they're getting treated poorly by the Earth government, as, like, 90% of gundams start. In this case, we're getting the perspective from the colonies, as opposed to the universal century, where the perspective is much more from the earth side of the war. The main characters are five just terribly traumatized child soldiers who get sent down in their giant robots to sabotage assorted earth stuff. And then by the end of it, they end up kind of saving everyone, sort of.

12:53.164 --> 13:11.944
Yeah. That's a brilliant way to summarize 49 episodes of dense, dense fighting and shouting and ideology and. And angst. And angst.

13:12.284 --> 13:17.628
And then for a while in there, it goes really deep on the morality of drone warfare.

13:17.796 --> 13:23.252
Yeah, that's not relevant today at all, reader. It is very relevant today.

13:23.428 --> 13:26.044
So you're saying I should definitely watch it now, then?

13:26.204 --> 13:26.612
Yeah.

13:26.668 --> 13:27.844
Yeah. It's a good show.

13:28.004 --> 13:31.264
It's fun, and it has fewer episodes than one piece.

13:32.124 --> 13:33.544
Most things do.

13:38.004 --> 13:39.584
I think you murdered Chris.

13:40.764 --> 13:43.704
Well, I hope he'll get better. He's gotta edit this.

13:45.084 --> 13:46.464
Not if I'm dead.

13:47.764 --> 14:16.432
The endless in the title of the game refers to endless Waltz, which is the kind of finale movie of the Wing series. It basically just kind of ties up all the loose ends from the series itself. And it's probably my favorite part of the whole wing.

14:16.608 --> 14:19.104
And I believe it's technically a Christmas movie.

14:19.264 --> 14:20.280
It is.

14:20.472 --> 14:24.444
Yeah, it's Christmas. When he confirms the blast shields are closed.

14:26.304 --> 14:30.410
There's some good scenes with Christmas trees.

14:30.482 --> 14:35.694
And what about the duel part? Is that referring to anything specific or anything like that?

14:36.314 --> 14:38.714
No, I think that's because it's a fighting game.

14:38.874 --> 15:15.928
Yeah, I was gonna say it's very much endless duel. Very much is like an arcade fighter. And really, the only part of that that's reflected in the Gundam Wings series itself is the fact that that literally spoilers for a series that is over 25 years old, literally all five main characters are fighting basically against each other. But on the same side. For 48 of the 49 episodes, pretty.

15:15.976 --> 15:31.514
Much there's a lot of conflict. The five main characters are not a united front. Yeah, there's a handful of them that get along, smaller groups. And then there's Wufei, who nobody likes.

15:32.054 --> 16:00.352
Oh, I liked Wufei, but I think that's because nobody else liked him. And I. I had read the, like, backstory manga that they put out, and his. His backstory is just so tragic. How could you not like him? He's just so angry because his. His entire, like, colony was destroyed and his, like, betrothed wife was killed, and he wasn't even gonna be a pilot anyway.

16:00.408 --> 16:01.844
It was a political marriage.

16:02.544 --> 16:16.934
Yeah, and then his political wife was murdered, and she was gonna be the pilot, not him. So I feel like he is. He. He's the one that's, like, outwardly working through his trauma the most.

16:17.514 --> 16:22.986
He's definitely working through a lot of trauma and a lot of misogyny.

16:23.130 --> 16:38.694
Well, we're gonna just go and cry over the fact that there have never been any other shows made that go this deep into the human experience. Well, I dropped some promos for a few other shows that are hopefully happier than this.

16:45.484 --> 17:11.519
Hey there, hellspawn. Is your regular podcast rotation missing a show that dives deep into the gritty darkness of one of the greatest superhero creations of the nineties? Well, we've got a show for you. I'm Piers Leiden with George Marstead, and this is spawnography. We're two longtime comic book journalists who are ready to take you from the alleys of New York City to the depths of hell itself as we dissect each arc of spawn, unraveling its mysteries and celebrating its legacy along the way. New episodes drop every Monday wherever you get your podcast.

17:11.631 --> 17:14.119
Because for Todd so loved the world.

17:14.191 --> 17:16.003
He gave his only begotten spawn.

17:17.743 --> 17:18.763
Spawn.

17:32.143 --> 18:16.534
Hello, this is Cory Bird, creator and artist of Tooth and Nail, as well as founder of Bird's Eye View Comics. And this is my Kickstarter for the Tooth and Nail Manga edition, volume one. Tooth and Nail manga edition, volume one, is a page by page remaster of issues one through six of the hit comic manga series. In this edition, there are over 100 pages of content, including new art concept sketches and guest art pinups. If you haven't read tooth and nail, this is the perfect opportunity to experience the first act of this action adventure. Thank you all for your support.

18:24.474 --> 19:43.952
Those are some great shows to check out, but first, let's finish up with this one. So, as we said before, Gundam Wing was a game that was released only in Japan. It came out in 1996. Looking at the usual Japan to North America timeline that probably would have had it out in 97 or 98 or right at the end of the Super Nintendo lifetime because it was either a year or two or like 20 years later, we eventually get it. This game was put together by Bandai and Natsume Bandai for the purposes of this show. We've seen them do a Dick Tracy game, some Digimon games, obviously other Gundam games, Muscle, the Rocketeer, and something about balls and dragons. Sure, it'll never catch on over here. Natsume has only worked on Gundam battle assault one and two. Again, just as far as things that we've looked at on the show, those are the only places you know of them from. And this was released on only the Super Famicom, which I have to say, because technically, that is correct. It never came out on the Super Nintendo. They are different because the Famicom controllers have better colors on the buttons, and.

19:43.968 --> 19:51.732
It has those little. It doesn't have the little prongs that keep you from using international games on your Super Nintendo.

19:51.888 --> 19:52.624
Yeah.

19:53.844 --> 19:58.164
Is that bit about the colors a hot take, or is that kind of universally agreed on?

19:58.284 --> 20:01.828
Oh, I have no idea. That's just my opinion. And my opinion is right on this case.

20:01.996 --> 20:02.700
Cool.

20:02.852 --> 20:04.716
I mean, the super Nintendo purple buttons are fine.

20:04.740 --> 20:06.028
I'm not going to fight them on it.

20:06.156 --> 20:13.020
Red and blue and yellow and green buttons. Like, obviously that over one shade of purple and then a different shade of purple.

20:13.172 --> 20:15.140
My color blindness is really kicking me.

20:15.212 --> 20:28.740
Yeah, the american ones are purple. They're not bad until you see the japanese ones. Also, like we said, before. This is a one v one fighter. So think, you know, your street fighters, your mortal kombats. You're going to battle assaults, if you will.

20:28.892 --> 20:29.812
I will.

20:29.988 --> 20:47.364
It's a fighting game. I mean, the plot is that there are robots and people who live inside the robots who want to fight, and so they do. We're not even going to worry about plot. It's a Super Nintendo one V one fighter. I'm just happy that they attempted to put a plot in there.

20:48.664 --> 20:50.484
Was there even a plot?

20:50.784 --> 20:59.176
I mean, it was all in japanese, so I couldn't follow it. But there was basically like a text box between fights.

20:59.360 --> 21:36.600
From my understanding, looking at things online, it was like the short little things that the fighters say in Street Fighter between fights. So not really anything important plot wise, but potentially kind of cool if you could actually read Japanese. I cannot. But I'm also not going to hold that against the game because one, it's still a fighting game and a fun one at that. And two, it wasn't made for me at all because I don't speak Japanese or live in Japan. So they never really made it with the intent to let me hear it or seat womp womp.

21:36.752 --> 21:49.216
Well, and by the time Gundam wing hit the US, the Super Nintendo was already old news and they didn't want to release it. That's why we got Gundam battle assault us first.

21:49.400 --> 21:55.284
We have some pretty sick characters in this game, though, from my understanding.

21:55.824 --> 22:00.484
Absolutely wonderful mecha designs and also some people in them, too.

22:02.874 --> 22:49.634
Fun fact. So the four endless waltz. The Gundam team basically redesigned the main characters suits, and at first they tried to play it off like they had upgraded their suits between the end of the series itself and endless waltz. And then later on, they just, in, like, some of the manga releases after that have happened more recently. They've definitely just been like, these suits were always this cool. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Curtain.

22:50.654 --> 22:56.388
And interestingly enough, this does not use the endless waltz designs.

22:56.566 --> 23:02.044
I mean, I guess that's kind of, that's kind of understandable because the endless waltz designs are very.

23:02.824 --> 23:05.048
They're a lot busier, a lot more deeper.

23:05.096 --> 23:06.524
They're a lot busier.

23:07.264 --> 23:16.804
They probably would not simplify quite as easily to super Nintendo pixels, especially since they already adjusted the proportions on the suits to make them fit on the screen.

23:17.104 --> 23:23.278
That said, the. The artwork in the game in general is pretty, pretty good.

23:23.456 --> 23:24.514
Oh, yeah.

23:24.634 --> 23:32.494
I can tell you that. It's absolutely gorgeous. I can't really tell you how accurate it is, though, which again, is why I have you two here.

23:32.874 --> 23:38.506
Everybody's a little bit squatter and rounder than they are in the show, but not by a lot.

23:38.650 --> 23:43.106
They're very. They're still recognizable as themselves, and that's.

23:43.130 --> 23:47.098
A pretty common change as you put people into video games and stuff anyway.

23:47.266 --> 23:48.014
Yeah.

23:48.514 --> 24:18.018
Also, they use one of my favorite opening songs of all time in any anime as the title music, which I can fully admit that I, at one point in my life, had listened to all five of the Gundam Wing soundtracks from start to finish because I enjoyed the music that much.

24:18.206 --> 24:20.114
I should track those down.

24:20.274 --> 24:23.322
Anime just has good music, though. That is also a scientific fact.

24:23.498 --> 24:40.054
The claim to fame that I would know is that the music was done by Kao Ohtani, who also did the music for Outlaw Star, which I also was a huge fan of, although probably not as Big A, not as big a draw for other people.

24:41.154 --> 24:47.466
Outlaw star was pretty big at the time, but it definitely doesn't seem to have the holding power that, uh oh.

24:47.490 --> 24:54.322
I could, I would, I would. I could totally get started on that, so don't let me get started on that.

24:54.498 --> 25:24.004
This game had eight characters in it, which is pretty standard for a super Nintendo kind of fighter. It's what you can fit. I'm going to butcher some names here, but you had hero ue duo Maxwell Trowa Burton, Quatre Ribera winner Cheng Wufei x Marquis, Lady Eun, and Lucerozia Noen. Also, those are the humans and not the robots.

25:24.424 --> 25:28.724
I would give that a solid 75% to 80%.

25:29.144 --> 25:36.724
I'll take that. That seems to be in the range of. They know what I'm trying to say and they're gonna make fun of me later for being so bad.

25:37.184 --> 25:50.720
Well, I can provide some corrections. That would be Catra Ribarba winner Wufei Chang. I think they actually pronounced the s at the end.

25:50.872 --> 25:51.256
They do.

25:51.280 --> 25:55.240
And Lucrezia Noin, in my defense, Kayleigh.

25:55.272 --> 26:06.442
Makes fun of me for mispronouncing French. We had seen six of these characters. Lucizera Noen and Lady Eunice were the newbies here for this one.

26:06.578 --> 26:07.454
Were they?

26:07.794 --> 26:16.214
They're not in battle. Assault. Assault two. They also are not driving their mechs.

26:18.754 --> 26:23.854
I am kind of surprised that they did manage to fit in some of the female characters, though.

26:25.034 --> 26:33.134
I'm still annoyed that they didn't give Noyne her, either of her mechs, which can you.

26:33.634 --> 26:38.214
I have a memory like a sieve which. What were her mechs again?

26:38.954 --> 27:05.226
Shes first piloting an Aries, the land air mechs, and then shes got a Taurus that is just all white by the end. And that white Taurus is sweet and would have looked real cool in the game. I wonder if it wonders if Mercurius and V eight are probably more marketable. But, like, I like the white Taurus.

27:05.330 --> 27:09.082
It's probably also harder to animate an all white suit.

27:09.258 --> 27:19.734
Probably. Probably doesn't read as well, alas. And then Lady Eun only drives a mech once in the series, and it's a Leo for, like, 10 seconds.

27:20.274 --> 27:25.414
She does it to save to try to convince Trez to stop being a dick. Right.

27:27.464 --> 27:38.072
I think she's, like, tackling Wu Fei's mech out of the way. Cause trace is, like, in a dumbass and trying to fight a mech unarmed or something.

27:38.248 --> 27:45.760
Yeah, it's something to do with trace because that was always her blind spot. Yeah, and Chris has no idea what we're talking about.

27:45.872 --> 27:51.584
I mean, I'm kind of still stuck on the fact that she drove a Leo, because I thought that was Voltron territory.

27:51.744 --> 28:21.826
No, all the mechs of one of the factions are named after different star signs. All their stuff is named after different constellations. So that you've got the Leo is like the basic cannon fodder mech of this series. And then you've got the Aries, which is like a cannon fodder mech that flies, and the Taurus, which is designed for space stuff, ergo, which is a drone. None of those show up in this game.

28:22.010 --> 28:24.410
What kind of mechs do get to show up in this game?

28:24.562 --> 28:45.984
Well, we get the five main hero mechs and then the upgraded version of one of the hero mechs, and then we have Mercurius and Vay Eight, who are the weird universe. They're the prototype that. Prototypes that kind of become the Virgo. It's a thing. They're like, kind of cool looking.

28:46.064 --> 28:53.200
They're like proto. They're like, in between the cannon fodder and the gundams. Right? They're like a. Am I remembering that correctly?

28:53.232 --> 28:58.928
Yeah, yeah. They're like, by Oz to try to make gundams.

28:59.096 --> 28:59.848
Yeah.

29:00.016 --> 29:05.684
And then the tallgies. I didn't actually list any of the main character names. Aaron, this is yours.

29:07.224 --> 29:12.860
Oh, wait. What? For the. For the. The Gundam titles?

29:13.052 --> 29:15.180
Yeah, I didn't actually list any of their names.

29:15.292 --> 29:48.644
Oh, well, they all have some pretty bangin names. There's. Okay, so hero pilots, wing zero duo pilot Stethscythe Troa pilots. Heavy arms. Bonus points if you can guess correctly what weapon his Gundam uses. Ketra pilots Sandrock and wafe. Pilots.

29:50.064 --> 29:54.524
I know which one it is for this one because he's the one that has, like, three different names.

29:54.824 --> 29:58.416
I keep thinking Shenlong, but that's not the name that's used.

29:58.440 --> 29:59.568
No, it's Shenlong.

29:59.656 --> 30:00.400
Is it?

30:00.552 --> 30:11.744
It's Shenlong. Yeah. It's. If they don't use that name, it's definitely the Shenlong sprite. Like, it's not Ultron or Nittaku.

30:12.364 --> 30:13.372
Yeah, yeah, yeah.

30:13.508 --> 30:16.860
You said Ultron, though. Is that the same Ultron that I'm thinking of, or is that a different.

30:16.892 --> 30:20.532
Ultron but Ultron with an a, not a u?

30:20.588 --> 30:22.024
Oh, okay.

30:22.844 --> 30:26.864
Of those, my favorite is the death scythe because it has a scythe.

30:27.764 --> 30:33.132
Can I be basic and say that my favorite is wing zero because it has wings?

30:33.308 --> 30:34.024
Yeah.

30:34.804 --> 30:37.024
At least the endless waltz version.

30:37.324 --> 30:39.716
Yeah. And this is not the endless waltz wing zero.

30:39.820 --> 30:51.980
This is the retcon. We're going to retcon all of this game to have the endless waltz versions of all of the suits, of all.

30:52.012 --> 31:11.882
The characters in Gundam who did not get to be in this game. Is there anybody that you wish you actually could go back and retcon to have them be in the game? Whether it be driving a mech or just there in a cutscene between fights, there's your chance to bring up the person you missed.

31:12.058 --> 31:13.894
But catcher's the pilot.

31:14.434 --> 31:16.174
I said it could be either one.

31:16.514 --> 31:18.674
Catch was literally one of the pilots.

31:18.834 --> 31:21.050
Oh, well, then I'm not gonna.

31:21.082 --> 31:23.866
I'm. Now that you. Now that you want me to. I'm not gonna do it.

31:23.970 --> 31:28.896
Okay, fine. Well, yeah, you can't, because I'm dumb, and I've heard the name wrong.

31:29.040 --> 31:31.000
That's all right. You're forgiven.

31:31.072 --> 31:32.604
But still, who would you bring in?

31:33.144 --> 31:44.000
Oh, you know, I don't know if he's. I don't know if he's in the cutscenes, but Trey's isn't in. He doesn't appear in the game, so.

31:44.032 --> 32:12.166
I actually figured that he does. I think he's the end boss, because Epion is in the game, and I saw the COVID and was like, why is epion on the COVID Epion's not in this game. So I started digging, and I discovered that Epion is a secret character that you can unlock by typing in a code. He's the akuma.

32:12.310 --> 32:14.754
Is it the. What's the code?

32:16.734 --> 32:26.420
Left? No. Ll l r r r. L r. L r. L r. Until it's, like, enough.

32:26.612 --> 32:28.076
Huh. Cool.

32:28.180 --> 32:29.524
That's easy enough to remember.

32:29.644 --> 32:32.412
Yeah. Then I can't pick Treys.

32:32.588 --> 32:35.220
God, the mech pilots in there.

32:35.412 --> 32:49.118
Obviously, there should have been a sequel that included characters from endless Waltz, and they should have included Marimea. And she should have piloted a gundam, even though in this, in the movie, she definitely did not pilot a gundam.

32:49.246 --> 32:50.654
She could have a serpent.

32:50.814 --> 32:51.686
See, there we go.

32:51.710 --> 32:52.654
That would be cool.

32:52.814 --> 32:53.494
Billy. Sold.

32:53.534 --> 32:56.246
Like, we don't have any of the grunt suits in this.

32:56.430 --> 33:01.718
Approved. Make it happen. Let's travel back in time and make a sequel.

33:01.886 --> 33:06.022
Or we could just make it now. People are still making Super Nintendo games.

33:06.198 --> 33:10.158
But the vibes are gonna be off. You have to do it in the zeitgeist.

33:10.286 --> 33:12.086
Okay. Can't argue with that.

33:12.110 --> 33:19.624
One out for mobile suit Gundam battle assault three. I want battle assault three to happen. Dang it.

33:21.924 --> 33:24.164
What are the current chances of that happening?

33:24.324 --> 33:30.252
Oh, I think they're basically zero. It's been, like 20 years since the second one came out.

33:30.388 --> 33:44.504
As we start to wind things up, I have to know, because this is really the whole point of the show. What does this game, can we even really tell what this game gets wrong about the comic since none of us speak japanese?

33:45.564 --> 33:53.684
I mean, it's a fighter. There's not really much plot, just the robots punching each other, tying back into.

33:53.724 --> 34:26.344
Something that I said earlier. I feel like it ties specifically into the feeling of Gundam wing itself, because all of the pilots are kind of fighting amongst each other and fighting people outside of the core five pilot group until the very end of the series, which is captured in these kind of games in which you're just going up against other suits and other just willy nilly.

34:26.504 --> 34:35.780
That's true. This is actually one of those places where the fighting game format of everybody fight really, really does pay off.

34:35.852 --> 34:36.580
Yeah.

34:36.772 --> 34:55.556
If you knew somebody who was not me, because obviously you're gonna give me this game. But if you knew somebody who wanted to maybe get into Gundam, ignoring every other Gundam game that exists, would you give them this game as a bit of a primer? Course. Also, you can cheat and have it be translated if you need it to be.

34:55.700 --> 34:56.988
Oh, goodness, no.

34:57.156 --> 35:10.354
Yeah, I wouldn't say as much as it does fit the Gundam wing specific vibe. It's not a good representation of the Gundam franchise overall.

35:11.134 --> 35:50.332
And it's. You've all seen the wow, cool robot meme, right, with the Gundam. Shooting the bullets with the label of war is bad. Going over the head of the guy saying, wow, cool robot. For the missing the point, this is kind of purely cool robot, which is fun. Everybody likes bashing their action figures together. God knows that I did a lot of that with my friends and the model kits back when Gundam Wing was new in the US. But it's. You definitely need to already have some investment in these characters if you're going to get something out of this.

35:50.508 --> 36:28.996
I'm going to kind of cheat a little bit on this and say, I definitely wouldn't give this to somebody who wanted to get into Gundam for all the reasons y'all have said, but I would possibly give them this one, as here is a game from Gundam. Also play a game from other similar giant robot fighting series. Which of the robots now do you think is the coolest? And that's what we're gonna get you into. If you have somebody who wants to get into the giant fighting robots genre, end of things. But they don't know which exact flavor to go with.

36:29.180 --> 36:43.264
Yeah, kind of. Kind of like what I said with battle assault two of the. It's actually kind of a great intro because you can just toss it at somebody and be like, hey, which of these robots do you like the best? Started on that Gundam series?

36:43.644 --> 36:59.664
And it does seem like a lot of the specs of the Gundams and suits themselves do match their kind of on screen versions of themselves.

37:00.604 --> 37:23.478
Oh, yeah. I mean, I legit put quite a few hours into this game, getting my death scythe teleporting everywhere. It definitely nails the feel of them very much. They feel they play, right? They play like they look in the show, you know, they do all the right moves.

37:23.646 --> 37:29.514
Yeah, yeah, totally. Chris, did you want to put in your guess as to what weapon heavyarms uses?

37:29.854 --> 37:35.294
A ball and chain attached to the ankle of the robot.

37:35.454 --> 37:37.074
Yes. Correct.

37:37.494 --> 37:38.350
Wait, are you serious?

37:38.422 --> 37:38.678
No.

37:38.726 --> 37:44.224
Side note, audience. A lot of bullets. A lot of guns.

37:44.304 --> 37:53.204
A lot of bullets. It has guns in its shoulders and in its chest and in its legs and carries guns. It has guns.

37:53.584 --> 37:55.724
Does its guns have guns?

37:56.824 --> 38:10.770
Yeah. Well, in the endless waltz version, the chest plate flips open and it reveals both Gatling guns built into the chest and guns built into the flaps that opened up, because that makes sense.

38:10.922 --> 38:15.578
Well, yeah, that's just room for guns. Are you sure this isn't an american thing?

38:15.746 --> 38:23.094
This is the only. That's the only one that has a lot of guns. The rest of them have more normal weapons, like a scythe and.

38:28.194 --> 38:28.730
Shotel.

38:28.762 --> 38:30.694
The two, like is what they call.

38:31.114 --> 38:58.076
I have never heard that term anywhere else, so I think it's some. And Shenlong has the glaive. He's got a big lightsaber spear and flamethrowers, and one of his stretchy arms because he's got an extendo arm. The wing Gundam has the classic lightsaber and also just big gun. One big gun zero has two of that. Big gun. It has two big guns, which leads.

38:58.100 --> 39:02.254
To that very iconic scene at the end of endless waltz.

39:02.404 --> 39:03.082
Yep.

39:03.218 --> 39:13.890
Where Marumeo's like, you can try to shoot us in our underground bunker. And then hiros like, okay. And then he does.

39:13.922 --> 39:15.694
The blast doors are closed, right?

39:17.514 --> 39:18.610
Doesn't matter.

39:18.802 --> 39:29.174
Mostly for my own curiosity. If I want to watch something that's giant robots but slightly less war crimes, do I even have any options?

39:29.524 --> 39:31.824
I think Billy's gonna have to answer that one.

39:33.004 --> 39:35.652
Even if you have to go outside of the Gundam universe.

39:35.828 --> 39:42.024
Power Rangers. Look, when the robots get big enough, collateral damage happens.

39:44.244 --> 39:47.224
Yeah. When a robot gets as big as a country.

39:47.964 --> 39:59.730
So, Billy, what you're saying is that Papa Roach was right. It's in our nature to destroy ourselves. It's in our nature to kill ourselves. It's in our nature to kill each other. It's in her nature to kill, kill, kill.

39:59.922 --> 40:06.654
And I would say that this is my last resort dentist, my papa roach knowledge.

40:10.114 --> 40:15.250
Did he write for the translation of Gundam Wing? Because I feel like that could have fit into some of the dialogue.

40:15.402 --> 40:25.970
Yeah, that sounds like something that, like, maybe not, but like, somebody else. Oz was some other Oz dude that tres would be chewing out.

40:26.162 --> 40:35.474
On that note, it has been great getting you guys both back on here. If people want to hear more from you, though, where else can they find you? Around the Internet?

40:35.634 --> 40:37.762
I'm a ghost. I'm a mystery.

40:37.938 --> 40:59.792
I mean, I have some writing on Commandercast.com. They're great guys. Go listen to their podcast if you like. Magic. I kind of burned out on magic with some of my frustrations with how I haven't touched the game in years. But I stand by my writing over there and they're good dudes.

40:59.968 --> 41:08.684
Also, both of you have previous episodes on this show and tags down in the tag, which are links to those.

41:09.104 --> 41:14.924
Yeah. However, keep an eye out. There might be more to come from me.

41:15.944 --> 43:08.458
As always, if you want to hear more from me, the best way to do that is to head on over to playcomics.com, where there's links to all the social media things. Mostly I'm on Twitter lately because, I don't know, that's just where I happen to be. If you want to help support the show, probably the best thing you can do is to tell your friends about it and leave a review on someplace like Podchaser or Apple Podcasts. Or, you know, someplace like that. Just shout it into the void if you want. I don't care. I'm going to find a way to get people stickers or something, though, if they have done that. So that would be really cool. If you can show me that you did that somehow, I would love it. Or, you know, you could always be like, oh, no, lit class and Dan McMahon and Carl Antonovitz and give me money. Because making the show does cost money. Unfortunately, that's how a capitalistic society works. That is what will lead to the Gundam overthrow of our people, I guess. I don't know. I'm trying to make this thematically appropriate, and it's just not flowing right now. Don't forget that play comics is a part of the Gunnegeek.com network, where as of right now, we are either just finishing or are about to finish looking at X Men 97, depending on who gets their episode released first. After that, though, we're jumping right back into X Men evolutions because I still haven't seen anything starting with season two, and everybody else thinks that is a shame. If you like the music that I'm rudely talking on top of right now, head on over to Soundcloud.com. Best day to check out Bestday's music. But most of all, just grab a game, grab a stack of comics, and go find yourself a new favorite character. As usual, I do not need you to record from your side because I will have three copies, one of which is definitely the good one, because you two will be separated.

43:08.626 --> 43:09.462
Whoo.

43:09.658 --> 43:11.294
Billy, what does Mario say?

43:11.454 --> 43:12.474
Wahoo.

43:13.774 --> 43:16.134
Okay, good. All of our levels look like they're at good spots.

43:16.174 --> 43:24.314
I was almost gonna say, yahaha. I was like, wait a minute. Mario definitely does not say that.

43:24.654 --> 43:34.850
As we said before, gundam endless duel was a game that was released only in Japan. I forgot to scroll up. So you're saying I should definitely watch it now then?

43:35.022 --> 43:35.442
Yeah.

43:35.498 --> 43:36.634
Yeah. It's a good show.

43:36.794 --> 43:40.094
It's fun, and it has fewer episodes than one piece.

43:40.914 --> 43:42.374
Most things do.

43:46.834 --> 43:48.374
I think you murdered Chris.

43:49.554 --> 43:52.534
Well, I hope he'll get better. He's gotta edit this.

43:53.874 --> 44:24.854
Not if I'm dead. Looking at the usual Japan to North America timeline that probably would have had it out in 97 or 98 or right at the end of the super Nintendo lifetime because it was either a year or two or, like, 20 years later, we eventually get it. This one was made. This one was made by the car down on the street that somebody tried to break into.

44:26.834 --> 44:28.574
Somebody sat on their keys.

44:31.264 --> 44:33.284
Oh, can you hear the honking outside?

44:34.304 --> 44:35.364
Oh, yeah.

44:36.624 --> 44:42.904
Oh, wow. Cool.

44:43.024 --> 44:44.128
Honk, honk.

44:44.176 --> 44:45.204
Sorry about that.

44:46.024 --> 44:47.384
I thought it was gone for a second.
