In today's Jaws Tip I'm going to walk you through starting JAWS quickly. The way I typically do it is by using the Run dialog. Now this does require you to be aware of what version of Jaws you currently have installed on your computer. If Jaws stops and you need to run Jaws or someone else closes Jaws for you and they forgot to reopen it, hold the Windows key down and tap the letter R. This puts you in the Run dialog and you can type in the word JAWS followed by the version number. So I'm running JAWS 2025. We'll type JAWS J A W S 2025 and tap the Enter key. A couple of seconds later Jaws will come up and start speaking to you. Another way you can start Jaws is if you press and hold the Windows key and tap the D. For desktop, type the word JAWS J A W S and the first instance of Jaws that's on your desktop will be highlighted. Even though your computer isn't speaking to you, tap the Enter key and Jaws will come up speaking shortly thereafter, there is a Jaws keystroke to start jaws, and I'll be honest, I'm not familiar with what that is because it hasn't worked reliably for me in the past. If you want to set your own Jaws keystroke, press Windows key D to highlight the desktop. Tap the letter J until you get to Jaws and then press Alt Enter on this shortcut. This will take you to the properties of the shortcut file itself and locate the shortcut button that you can press with your spacebar. Enter a keystroke you'd like to use to activate Jaws. Find the Apply button, then ok, and then using that keystroke should activate Jaws in future when you need to quickly open it. Hopefully you found that to be useful.
