Crystal: SCPs and creepypastas are communicated in a digital format, which is why it’s clever to interpret them as Digimon. What other things communicated in a digital format would you like to see reinterpreted as Digimon?

Nikolas: Is that what Digimon are supposed to be? Little mon-ified versions of online ideas and stuff?

John: So. Kinda. Kinda. The one time that they tried to make it very direct was when they did Appmon, and that almost killed the franchise. There is a Digimon in the Appmon franchise that is called Tweetmon, and it is supposed to be Twitter.

Lilith: Is he like a horrible, hateful creature?

Nikolas: Well no, cause he’s named Tweetmon, which is before it got that bad.

Lilith: Let’s not pretend Twitter was anything more than what it was. It was not a fallen soldier, that place was always a shithole. 

Nikolas: Yeah, but, you know, very extreme shithole difference. 

Lilith: I mean, does it matter if the shithole gives you cholera or gonorrhea? They’re both bad.

Nikolas: They are bad, but hey, the old shithole is one I made friends on. And the new one, all my friends left, so now I just use Bluesky.

Lilith: It always befuddles me—and I know we’re moving off the track of the question in the first place—but I never understand the social media apps, because in general I don’t understand how people form an economy of social interaction. Because odds are, if I talk to someone more than one time in a row in a reply thread, I will think to myself: “And now they’re justified to kill me.” And then I will never speak to them again. 

John: I don’t know about that one.

Lilith: Having social anxiety and being an extrovert is really stupid, I’ll have you know.

Nikolas: What I did was just, “Oh, these are people that I’ve talked to, and they reply every so often, I should send them a message in the DMs function of ‘Hey, do you use anything like a Discord that would be easier to talk to you with?’”

And then they either ignore me, and I know I don’t have to pursue them further, or they say “yes” and now I talk to them consistently. And that rocks, I like that. It’s just one message to have to send out, and either you’ve made a friend, or you can just basically tell them “okay, fuck off” in your own brain.

Lilith: See, that’s fair. I, like the black mold in my Steam library, just kind of manifest in people’s servers, and then they struggle to get rid of me.

But, to answer Crystal’s question, things that I think could be subsequently digitized… here’s the thing, I don’t mean to punt straight away, but there is a targeted demographic of cryptids on the internet. Like, dude who exclusively wants to post about trains, or whoever operates very very niche wikis. So, give me whatever it is the Digimon equivalent of someone’s entire vested knowledge catalog of the steam train.

Solon: We’ve been here for long enough where we’ve got some pretty specific PAX traumas. There’s some trauma response happening at certain points of PAX for me this weekend. Once I noticed that I was like, “Yeah, we’ve been here for a long time.” But, bigger picture, we have changed so dramatically since when we were 20 coming to this show, we have grown and evolved, the spaces that we take up are different, and because of that it allows us to have a lot more freedom than we used to have. It’s been really good. It was very affirming to be on the PAX show floor and be like, “I am very different from how I used to be.”

Lorelai: All right, since we are running out of time, final topic before we go on to questions. For each of you, what is your game of the show that you played, and second, what game are you most looking forward to? Because they can be separate things. My game of the show was Towa, but the game I’m most looking forward to is Onimusha because it scratched my Nioh 2 itch.

Solon: Oh, that’s a really good question. I don’t have an answer yet.

Franny: It might be Entropy for both of me, honestly. It vibes with me so well. I did like Towa. I’m really excited to see how Valor Mortis shakes out. It’s gotta be Entropy, I think, for both. I had so much fun with it. 

Solon: I think the best on the PAX show floor, and this is gonna be really dumb, it was SpyParty. It was. Seeing SpyParty in the same corner that they’ve always been at, I got teary-eyed seeing them.

Lorelai: I remember when that game was first announced like 20 years ago, that’s the same corner, the same setup, everything. It was beautiful.

Solon: That ReedPop finally figured out how to get them back in there, it connected PAX tradition in a way that felt so validating and real; “Okay, things are kind of normal again, SpyParty’s here!” And getting to see kids playing SpyParty for the first time being like, “Woah, cool!”, and seeing people my age being like, “I gotta show you this game!” It was nice. That was my favorite. It hit me so deeply in my core, seeing them there and being about to cry. It’s like, “Wow! How have you been, old friend!”

Lilith: Monkey as imagined by Hunter S. Thompson. John: I’m gonna be honest, I feel like that is just something that all Kongs would be able to do. I think Kongs can just eat whatever. They’re big apes. Lilith: Are you implying that Kong is a title you earn after eating 15 ice cream cones? John: No! They’re like… they’re apes. That’s just what they are. I don’t know, can a real gorilla eat a bunch of ice cream cones? I mean, they would probably get brain freeze because we get brain freeze. Diddy Kong is a monkey, he has a tail. Jackson: Yeah, but he’s still a Kong. He’s still part of the group. I’m thinking Donkey and Diddy can’t, but Dixie and Candy can, and it makes them really mad. It’s something they passively work towards, and when they do it Dixie and Candy are like: “We don’t care. This doesn’t mean anything.” Lilith: You’re describing an episode of that old animated Donkey Kong series. John: I was about to say that is 100% just from the animated show, oh my god. Yeah, if we’re taking that into account then I guess Yeti Kong would be eating all the ice cream, cause he’s in the cold, he’s a Yeti. Jackson: Yeti Kong?? John: Okay, so Bluster Kong can’t, but Leo Luster can. Jackson: What are you saying?? Crystal: I’m learning so much! John: Everyone’s saying “Oh John with the lore, he should be going into it more,” and now I’m out here talking about fuckin’ Leo Luster, oh my god. That series is all available on Youtube now. I don’t know if they did that to line up with Bananza or what. Donkey Kong is not one of my favorite Nintendo properties, okay?! Lilith: Do you think Funky Kong could do it? John: Oh, totally. 100%. Crystal: I think Funky Kong would get a headache, but he would try to tank it and not show it. Lilith: Oh, so he’s crying behind the sunglasses. Jackson: He walks behind a corner so nobody can see him and he curls into a ball like “Ouughhhhh… oughhhh!!” John: He’s trembling behind his surfboard! Jackson: “Ohhhh, why’d I do this…” John: Oh, Funky Kong is like the L.A. Beast of Kongs, I can see that. Jackson: I was just thinking like, he’s not going to eat them one at a time, he’s going to put them all into a big banana float and then chug it. And he’s like, “Yeah, I’m fine!” John: Yeah, exactly, and like ten minutes later he’d be yarfing like crazy, and that would be in the video. Oh yes, the new Bananza Kongs, we can’t forget them. Do you think Grumpy Kong and Void Kong and Poppy Kong could do it? Jackson: Poppy’s not doing it. Poppy’s watching them and just shaking their head no, like “This is stupid.” John: “Nah, I’m not participating in that.” But then Void Kong is like “I’ll do it for evil!!” Jackson: First ice cream in, Void Kong headache, freaking out, tapping out. And then Grumpy’s on their 30th cone like, “What?” John: “There was a contest? Okay.” Jackson: “Okay, yeah, whatever.” John: Donkey Kong… [laughs]. Thank you Ina for the question.
