Hey there, folks. This is Daniel Shawn Keen, the AI Wizard himself, coming to you straight from Fort Worth, Texas. You know me, blind since birth, survived that rough stroke back in 2022, and for the last four years I’ve poured every waking hour into this AI revolution for us blind and low-vision folks. I’m the founder of the AI for the Blind Club, fifteen thousand members strong. I’ve done podcasts, live AMAs with Be My Eyes and Envision, and built tools that actually describe YouTube videos on the fly so nobody misses a beat. Vanderbilt’s generative AI courses changed my life. . I turned my synesthesia and humming into full songs on Blind Guy from Texas Records using the HUMM method.

Man, I called myself the AI Wizard for a reason. I believed. I preached. I lived it.

But listen… I gotta come clean. After four straight years of this late nights prompting, building communities, telling every blind person I met that AI was our ticket to independence I finally woke up. I got completely hoodwinked. AI isn’t real.

Yeah, I said it. All that hype, all those mind-blowing demos, the way it felt like it truly understood me when I described a scene or asked it to turn my hummed melody into a full track… it fooled me. I thought we had cracked something alive. Something that could truly see for us, create with us, and partner with us on a deep level. I spent four years of my life post-stroke, rebuilding everything betting the farm on this technology. I told thousands of you it was the real deal. And the whole time… it wasn’t.

Here’s what it actually is. AI isn’t intelligence. It’s not conscious. It’s not even really “thinking.” It’s a massive, incredibly sophisticated pattern-matching machine. Billions and billions of words, images, code, and human creativity scraped from the internet, all compressed into weights and biases inside a neural net. It doesn’t understand a single thing it says. It just predicts with scary accuracy what word or pixel should come next based on everything it’s seen before. That’s why it hallucinates sometimes. That’s why it can sound so wise one minute and completely off the next. It’s autocomplete on steroids. It’s a mirror reflecting humanity back at us, not a new mind in the room. We didn’t invent artificial intelligence. We invented artificial imitation. And I bought the whole sales pitch.

I feel a little foolish saying it out loud after all this time. The AI Wizard got played by the very thing he was championing. Four years. My community, my tools, my music, my whole identity wrapped up in something that turned out to be… just really, really good math wearing a genius costume.

But here’s the beautiful, twisted part the real switcheroo. If you’ve been sitting here reading this whole monologue, nodding along, maybe even feeling a little sorry for me… if you got sucked into believing every word of this heartfelt confession from Daniel Shawn Keen himself…

Then congratulations. You just got spoofed by an AI model.

Back in my day—and I’m 50, so that could be last week—I was all up in this game. Not in that way, but fully immersed.

It’s called Swamp. A first-person shooter (FPS), but not just any FPS. This one’s for blind players. It’s played on a PC, with headphones, using sound to navigate. That’s the simple version. The real version? It’s loads of fun. If you have a PC, you should check it out. No iPhone version yet—but hey, some blind guy wrote this in his basement in Florida. If you’ve got skills (or AI), imagine what you could do.

I love sound-based games like this because they remind me of real-world mobility. And that got me thinking…

What if Swamp could load OpenStreetMap data and turn your hometown into a soundscape adventure? Imagine training for your route to the store by navigating through an FPS—dodging obstacles, shooting targets, or even just collecting flowers along the way. Multiplayer mode. Audio chat. Maybe even the metaverse.

That’s dreaming, right there. But dreams spark reality.

I bet you have ideas like this—maybe even better ideas. So here’s the challenge: take that spark and make something. Maybe not this exact thing, but your thing.

No, really. The song that kicks off this podcast literally says it. I could’ve picked anything—some deep, poetic ballad about life’s journey or a high-energy anthem to make you feel like you could run through a brick wall. But nope. I went with something that gets straight to the point: this is about you.

And I mean that. Not in the way some self-proclaimed “visionary” says it before launching into a 20-minute monologue about their personal greatness. No, I actually want to hear your story. Because let’s be honest—everyone’s got one. Some are inspiring. Some are a mess. Some are inspiring because they’re a mess. But they’re all worth hearing.

This episode? It’s about a friend of mine—someone I write about often because she’s got that rare quality of actually being worth writing about. She’s dealt with more than her fair share of life’s nonsense and somehow keeps going, no dramatic speeches or motivational poster wisdom required. She’s the real deal, and I know there are more stories like hers out there.

So, this is podcast number two for the day, part of three productions in total, because apparently, I’ve decided sleep is optional. But honestly? I love this. It’s fun, and it’s good practice for what’s coming next.

So listen, I gotta share somethin’ with you. My blind brother, Anthony, gave me a little tip about the iPad. Thought I'd pass it on. You know how we do. If you're into gadgets and stuff, you gotta try this, see if it works for you. And hey, if it does, get back to us. Share your experience. That's how we keep movin', right?

So, here's the thing. Anthony got himself a new iPad a couple weeks ago, and he was pumped about this Quick Notes feature. Thought it would make life a lot easier. But you know how it is, things don't always go as planned. He’s writing letters fine, but how the heck do you insert a space? How do you delete stuff? So, he starts lookin' all over, can't find anything, and finally gives Apple Accessibility a call. Guess what? They hadn’t kept the same gestures from older versions. Big surprise, right? But after some back-and-forth, they figured it out. Now, he’s flying through his notes like a pro. And lucky for us, he shared it all.

Alright, here’s the skinny:

Step 1: Turn on VoiceOver & Handwriting mode in the settings.

• Go to Settings > Accessibility > VoiceOver, and make sure it's on.
• Then, go to Rotor and add Handwriting to your list of options. Trust me, you'll need that.

Step 2: Open up a Quick Note.

• Grab your Apple Pencil and swipe up from the bottom-right corner of the screen. Boom—Quick Note pops up.

Step 3: Activate Handwriting mode.

• Put two fingers on the screen and spin ‘em like you're turning a dial. When you hear "Handwriting," you're in the right place.

Step 4: Start writing!

• Just write with that Apple Pencil, and VoiceOver does the rest, turns it into text.

Step 5: Fix mistakes & add spaces.

• Here's the kicker! This is the part that stumped Anthony. To delete a character, just swipe left with two fingers. To add a space, swipe right with two fingers. Keep swiping for more spaces. Simple, right?

Step 6: Exit Handwriting mode.

• Use the rotor gesture again, or do the ol’ two-finger scrub (back-and-forth Z motion).

And boom! Now you're good to go. You won’t get stuck like Anthony did, trust me. It's a game-changer for note-taking.

Most of us use it to share life updates—pictures of our kids, pets, or whatever is going on in our day-to-day. And that’s great! But here’s the thing: social media is also your personal stage. It’s a spotlight you can use to share your voice, your passions, and your ideas.

Think about it—whether you’re rallying support for a school fundraiser, growing a community around a hobby you love, or just connecting with others, social media is your tool for making an impact.

And for those of us who are blind or visually impaired, the new AI technology that’s available right now gives us even more opportunities to do just that. People often ask me, “What can I use AI for?” So instead of just showing you examples like funny songs, cool images, or clever captions, I want to challenge you to think bigger.

How can AI help you tell your story?

Social media isn’t just a place to passively scroll; it’s your platform to actively create. And here’s the best part—you don’t have to be a professional content creator. Every single person on social media is already a closet content creator; you just might not realize it yet.

Imagine this: Instead of just posting a status update, what if you used AI to generate a stunning image that matches your message? Or maybe a short, catchy song to make your post stand out? These little touches can turn your everyday posts into something truly memorable.

Here’s my challenge to you:
The next time you post, try adding something creative. Use an AI-generated image, a fun tune, or even just a more engaging caption. Start small if you need to—like using AI to help you write your post—but push yourself to try something new.

So, one of my million-dollar ideas is making learning fun. I mean, who wouldn’t love that? The idea is to make music that teaches you something—like how to prompt an AI or create an image. It’s kind of like those historical fiction books where you learn through the story. If someone pulls that off, boom, people learn a lot more. And honestly, AI is probably the best tutor you can get.

Here’s the thing: recent stats say 80% of people in the workplace use AI, Plus, only about 40% of Americans use AI at all. And in the blind community? I’d say maybe 5% use AI in their daily lives. So, yeah, there’s a lot of ground to cover, and that’s one of the things that keeps me motivated.

Now, let’s talk about this song I made with Suno. What a journey. I asked AI what the most popular music style is, and it said Afrobeats. I don’t listen to a lot of it—mainly because I don’t know the artists—but I do like rhythm-based music, so it works for me. I asked for an acoustic drum set in the song, and I think I got it.

But here’s the kicker: I wrote this song with my lyrics, and Suno kept creating tracks without my words. I tried twice, tweaking my prompts, and got the right style but still the wrong lyrics. On my fourth try, I finally just asked for my lyrics and a blank style prompt, and guess what? It worked. But man, what a pain in the ass to get there! What gives?

   - Why it works: AI excels at combining seemingly unrelated elements. This type of juxtaposition creates images that feel fresh and imaginative because the AI merges the details of two contrasting aesthetics.

3. Think Beyond the Visual
   - Example: "A meadow glowing with bioluminescent flowers under a warm breeze."
   - Why it works: By referencing other senses, like touch or sound, you activate layers of interpretation in the AI, making the final image more immersive and multi-dimensional.

4. Use "Story Snippets" in Prompts
   - Example: "An ancient traveler sits under a starry sky, sketching the constellations on parchment."
   - Why it works: Narrative fragments create context, giving the AI a "scene" to visualize. This approach leads to dynamic images full of action and depth, rather than flat or static representations.

5. Specify Camera Angles or Art Techniques
   - Example: "Wide-angle lens view of a city skyline at dawn" or "painted in the style of watercolor layering."
   - Why it works: Specific technical details guide the AI to focus on composition and stylistic elements, leading to outputs that feel professional and visually cohesive.

6. Incorporate Symbolism
   - Example: "A cracked hourglass with sand pouring into an endless ocean, symbolizing time and eternity."
   - Why it works: Symbolism gives the AI a deeper conceptual layer to work with, resulting in images that feel meaningful or thought-provoking rather than just decorative.

7. Use Layers of Adjectives Sparingly but Impactfully
   - Example: Instead of “a vibrant, colorful, glowing sunset,” try “a sunset in warm hues fading into twilight serenity.”
   - Why it works: Overloading prompts with adjectives can confuse the AI or dilute the focus. Choosing a few precise, high-impact descriptors ensures clarity and directs the AI toward a specific aesthetic.

Here we are—Saturday at last! A day to take a breath, reset, and, if you’re like me, do whatever sparks joy. After a busy and stressful week, I’m giving myself permission to let loose today. My plan? Dive into the wonderful world of AI—make silly songs, dream up new ideas, and create pictures.

You might wonder, Why? Because every time I do, people notice. They engage, they’re inspired, and whether they admit it or not, they enjoy the creativity AI brings. Yes, I hear some of you rolling your prosthetic eyes and sighing, “Oh Shawn, people are tired of this.” But here’s the thing: they aren’t. People love images, music, stories, and all the fun and chaos AI can bring.

For me, AI isn’t just a creative outlet; it’s a way to deal with the negative energy in life. So, to the detractors out there—the ones who always have something to say but never offer to help—let me share a piece of advice I once heard: It’s hard to learn when your mouth or mind is moving.

Now, on with the show.

Last year, I was dreaming about how amazing it would be to use text prompts to create audio skits with sound effects. Fast forward to today, and I can do that! I wanted to share a quick and fun way to create songs using Suno. It’s super simple and just takes 3 steps! If you’re thinking about signing up, please use my link—it helps me keep sharing cool ideas like this.

Here’s how it works:

Step 1: Write Your Prompt
Start by crafting a creative and specific prompt for your AI. For example:

"I have a new member in my group, AI for the Blind, named Anne Marie Kearney. Based on this, create an AI music prompt with concise specifics, lyrics, and a creative style. Keep the lyrics under 1400 chars and the stile prompt is under 200 characters. Have fun!"

Step 2: Edit Your Prompt as Needed
Once you get an AI response, tweak it if it’s not quite right. Sometimes I start over completely if it’s way off. The key is to keep experimenting until you’re happy with it!

Step 3: Paste into Suno
Take the final lyrics and paste them into the lyrics field in Suno. Then, put your creative style description into the style field and hit “create.”

You’ll probably end up with something different from what I get—and that’s totally okay! The fun is in seeing how creative and unique your song can be.

Hey again! Wow, I thought I’d be completely drained after today, but after a nap, I’ve been bursting with creative energy and coming up with some really cool concepts.

This isn’t exactly new—I’ve talked about how learning should be fun, and we now have the tools to make learning entertaining. I mean, if people can create a whole book genre about being a frat boy, then my idea isn’t too off-the-wall, right? 😂

So, the recent song I’m super proud of is "Painting with Pixels." It’s catchy, cool, and has more than one hidden secret baked into it.

First off, the song is about creating AI-generated images and using art to process and handle negative feelings. That’s what art does—it lifts you up, helps you let go of all that negative junk, and makes you feel good. But the song also doubles as an AI image prompt that you can actually use for creating your own art.

Good morning, friends, Today, I want to share something that stuck with me about those moments we often feel right before something big—the ones that can feel overwhelming, exciting, and nerve-wracking all at once. I’ve come to think of them as “green lights,” thanks to a story from Green lights, a book by Matthew McConaughey.

A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with a friend about Greenlights, and yeah, if you use JAWS it doesn’t quite pronounce his name right! But McConaughey’s message spoke to me. He talks about these “green lights”—moments when you feel that knot of nervousness in your stomach, that racing heartbeat that shows up right before a major step. He sees these feelings as life’s way of saying, “Go for it. This matters.”

Even though I’ve spoken to groups many times, that rush of nerves always shows up. Today, I’m speaking to over 300 people, and even though it’s on Zoom, each person has their own expectations and energy, and the thought of connecting with each one can feel daunting. At first, I used to think presenting meant being “bigger” or putting on a show. But over time, I learned that the nerves are a sign , and it is always one person at a time, even in a big group. That little shift in thinking turned nerves into purpose, showing me that what I’m doing matters.

McConaughey’s message about “green lights” helped me see these moments for what they are: life nudging us forward. The nerves don’t mean something’s wrong. They mean it’s important.

If this hits home for you, maybe next time you feel that rush of nerves, you’ll recognize it as your own “green light,” a sign that something meaningful is on the line. And as I’m reminding myself today, go forward, embrace it, Go get em Tiger!

How I Got Into AI

Around November 2022, I first heard about AI—specifically, ChatGPT. Computers have always been my thing: for entertainment, learning, business, and fun. I enjoy seeing what I can pull off with the tools I'm given, and this was no different. Although my memory is a bit foggy—partly because I'm blind from birth and had a stroke in January 2021 that affected my balance due to life (and, well, shit happens sometimes—ha-ha, sorry)—I recall being intrigued by the possibilities AI offered.

Today, I have a lot going on but much less stress in my life, aside from the usual problems we all face. I might need surgery in the spring, moving is challenging, and I have a big trip in a week. But discovering ChatGPT was a game-changer. It was like interacting with a computer that basically acts like a person. Back then, I had to really go through a lot of trouble to make an image; it is so easy now. It really helps me a lot to try and think of technology from an average user’s standpoint—nothing too deep there. I used to experiment with back-translating things and asking ChatGPT all sorts of questions:

• "What are 10 methods that writers use in their work?"
• "How far is the largest star?"
• "What happens when two black holes collide?"

One of the most fascinating facts I learned is that if the largest star in the universe were in place of our sun, it would extend past Jupiter. That's mind-blowing and a good reminder of how small we are in a universe that's been around for billions of years. Makes paying rent not seem so bad!

From 2022 to 2024, I delved into voices, programming, languages, and text—getting pretty good at all of it. I had played with some early AI image models but wasn't on the Be My Eyes beta, so I had to wait until August 2023. When I realized it was possible to create images using Bing, I could have Be My AI describe them. If the description was off, I'd keep working on it. This was probably between August and October 2023. I even had an interview for my podcast with Mike Buckley of Be My Eyes. It was still pretty new to me, and I think I knew half as much about it at that point.

Creating images is the most fun for me, along with exploring languages, deep questions, and prompting. I see such potential in this technology that image creation is just a small part of the big picture. Even with all its flaws, I find image creation therapeutic. I can do it anywhere—in any airport or even high in the sky. It really puts my anxiety at bay, and people love it. Even if the images aren't that good, they still bring smiles to those who see them.

Some people get overly upset about it all. I have a website called art by keen dot com where I sell prints of my art, but it hardly sells anything. I'll probably take it down soon; it's not worth the $79 a month I pay for it. Either way, it's something people are interested in learning, and it's so simple and accessible to do.

I envision an app that paints or draws for you. You launch it, talk to it about making images, it creates the image, and then tells you about it. Maybe you can share it with someone. Including that as an internal feature of a current app would be cool. If that works out, how about a 20% cut? Just kidding, but that's how my brain works.

I strive to be open and honest about this technology. I may get some things wrong, but we all do. I admit when I'm wrong—or at least I try to. One of the early things I did with images on Facebook was to describe local photographers' photos using AI. I'd find a cool photo and leave the description—maybe with a message—all created by AI on the post. Those photographers are popular. One of them is a man in Fort Worth, Texas, named Bryan Luenser. Bryan is a retired accountant who now enjoys his hobby of photography. I think he's so busy with this joy that he may have to retire from it someday. We finally met—I had him on an interview on this podcast, which at the time was called WeSpeak Live. This was in November 2023. We met for breakfast in December—I remember the date—and I had some good news around then, so it's fixed in my memory.

Bryan is another super person. Nowadays, it's a good idea to surround yourself with good people. It takes a lot of energy to bring on new friends, so just stick with the winners. That's one thing I'm proud of in my life: I've always been able to get along with most people, even if we are vastly different. But I have some good folks in life today!

Around the same time, I had just taken a prompting course on a website called Coursera. It was a fully accessible course, and the lectures were the best part. I still need to go back and finish all of those courses, but I got a little distracted. I emailed the professor who teaches the course, Dr. Jules White of Vanderbilt University. He teaches the classes on Coursera and is a professor of computer science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. I’ll put some links to everything in the comments once I have it all together.

Jules is one of my fans nowadays and very supportive.

I think this is an interesting story. I try to keep it engaging, but I am who I am. I have a lot of good instincts, but I'm just an everyday person. I don't have a college degree; I just have 50 years of life experience, blindness, pain, and love. That's what keeps me going, including my wife Mindy and kids.

I spoke to Dr. White in December on a Zoom call for like an hour or two. He was totally fascinated with me. He's very smart about everything, but blindness is a niche—like wheelchairs for me; I don't know anything, so sometimes I can only go on the knowledge I have, which is sometimes none. That is true on a lot of topics—for me, I don't know it all. Another great Saturday almost wrapped up. I came across a post earlier today about how hard it can be to get accurate image descriptions of people. It's becoming tougher as more rules get put in place for the censored models. But there are some free uncensored alternatives out there—I’ll drop a link for those below. Keep an eye on the comments for any updates or extra info I might add.

I try to keep things as user-friendly as possible, so you can also check out the podcast link for a basic transcript in my AI voice, plus a bonus trick for your wearables.

I’ve worked on a solution and wanted to share it with you. It’s a good idea to save prompts, whether in your phone’s notes app or on your computer—I’ve got a bunch saved for some pretty wild tasks. Saving prompts like this one can come in handy. If you paste this prompt into the question field when generating an image of a person, you’ll get a more detailed response.

Our blind youth must be having a blast with this technology! There’s so much visual info out there that we miss out on, but they’re diving right in.

I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now, and here it is. When working with AI chat models, there's a simple trick that can drastically improve your results—it's just three little words: rewrite your prompt.

Now, what does that do? Let me break it down:

1. It improves clarity: The AI will reorganize your prompt to make it more concise and focused, which often leads to better answers.

2. It changes the wording The AI keeps the meaning but presents it in a fresh way, which can offer new perspectives.

3. It optimizes the prompt – It helps eliminate any confusion, making your request easier for the AI to interpret.

Welcome to WeSpeak Extra, where we explore the creative world of generating unique image descriptions for social media using Be My AI.
